Women in Business:

“Be—YOU... and Feel Beautiful!”

Glo Spa’s Lori Ann Dye Gray, TN. --- Lori Ann Dye started her business several years ago above a pharmacy here but her determination and hard work saw her business explode. It wasn’t long before she was forced to find more space. In 2010, she expanded Glo Spa’s portfolio of services to her present location, inside a spacious suite at 406 Roy Martin Road, [Suite #4] across from Food City and behind Bank of Tennessee in Gray. The former Wal-Mart professional recruiter was a quick study and left her executive position there to go into business for herself. She learned everything there was to know about cosmetics, microderm, skin laser treatments and a wide variety of other spa services and she then went on to get her Aesthetician “Our Cosmetic Procedures are safe, effective and affordable,” Lori says with her signature bright smile. “We have three skin care professional experts on staff that provides corrective skincare treatments for: fine lines and wrinkles, spider veins, facial Telangiectasia, Rosacea, acne and acne scarring, excessive or unwanted facial or body hair, age spots, Hyperpigmentation, and Melasma and skin rejuvenation.” According to Lori, Glo Spa is the only medical spa in the Tri-Cities that uses state-of-the-art Quanta Aesthetic Lasers. In fact NASA is sending one aboard the 2016 Mars Mission. “With our Quanta Aesthetic Lasers system we are able to provide the best laser technology in the TriCities,” says Lori. “It is very high tech and our mission at Spa Glo is to offer the ‘Best of the Best’ in all our services from lasers treatments, to our 100% organic make-up products and services from license profes-

sionals in massage therapy, spa manicure/pedicure, eyelash enhancements, facials, and waxing to our full-service salon services.” When you enter Spa Glow there is a sense of being at home. “It truly is a very comfortable experience,” adds Lori. “It’s one-of-a-kind and it’s very inviting.” It is obvious Lori has a decorating talent as well as she did the decorating of Spa Glow large space and private rooms by blending fine furniture with unique art and accessories. Lori, a Southwest Virginia native, sees her and her staff’s future “as being very bright.” “We plan to be here until the end of time,” she says with a laugh. “We have great clients and business continues to grow. “Our staff works well together and in addition to working together everyday. . .we are also good friends; it’s kinda like family around here.” Lori said at a young age she learned a lot about make-up from her great aunt that raised her. “She sold AVON and was very good at it,” she said. “I use to go with her on deliveries and I’d get so many free samples from her. So I guess became interested in this business at a very young age.” Away from work Lori enjoys spending time with family and friends and she is quite the animal lover especially when it comes to horses and her pet dogs. “I grew up the youngest in my family with three brothers,” she adds. “So, I learned to be tough and personally, with me, what you see if what you get!” And, in her ‘spare time’ she will soon pursue a Master’s Degree at East Tennessee State University. She is quite the active businesswoman!

“When Basketball is Jazz” Notes from a home opener at Freedom Hall, again the sound of collegiate basketball. Interesting game, this Bulldog( UNC Asheville) Buccaneer encounter. Asheville had a jitterbug shooter but not enough inside dance to win this well coached contest. ETSU made plays, showcased elements of round ball Kareem Abdul Jabbar would call “jazzy”. Game plan on chart, execution evolved as energetic movement opened up Devon Harris for waltz time 3’s and Rashawn Rembert patience. Freshman Asonta Bradford spelled conductor Petey McClain confidently while Jason Riley was his looking for some action self. Ron Gilplaye of “Providential” transfer got several smiles from coach Murry Bartow for aggressive inside moves and robust rebounding. His partner in the paint, Alex Bates, will do likewise. A. J. Meriweather plays smart and accessible as Lester Wilson contemplates a combo of perimeter and backboard pursuit. Second half sharpshooting by Rembert, alongside Riley improvisations and cool foul shooting, kept Asheville at Buccaneer bay. An why

Well it did so adios Asheville until “We be coming round the mountain” at SoCon tourney time. “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing” Duke Ellington reminded his big band. These Bucs have some swing. They are a band of brothers and will only get better because they have a look of “jazz” about

them. You see, Basketball is Jazz when Dr. J (Erving) plays ball like a real Jazz Doctor pianist named Billy Taylor... When John Coltrane “Philly ensembles” Temple coach John Chaney and Michael Jordan creates some Miles Davis flair. Just ask Roy Firestone. The court is the stage, the stage the court. Take your “pick” and drum “roll” the score joyfully. Merry Christmas!!

Check out these holiday gifts for the film fans on your list! By: Toby Laek, Producer, Daytime Tri-Cities For film fans, the holidays are a great time. In addition to the three or four huge theatrical releases that normally pop up around the holidays, studios usually wait until the holiday shopping rush to release their biggest, most hyped releases on home video. Better yet, there’s often some time off of work to catch up on films and shows that you’ve missed over the year. If you have film fans on your Christmas list, here are some gift ideas: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray boxed set) – This is a fantastic collection featuring some of the best films, not only of Hitchcock’s career, but of all time (Psycho, Rear Window, North by Northwest, the criminally underrated Shadow of a Doubt, and my personal favorite, Vertigo are just a sampling of what’s in the box). Universal Pictures has gone back and done a great job remastering the films for high definition. Almost all the films have extensive supplemental features that give you insight into their creation and the filmmaking process of Alfred Hitchcock. All in all, you get 15 great films, looking the best they’ve ever looked, for around $100. You can’t go wrong. Apple TV or Roku Streaming Device – While most people still consume the majority of their entertainment through a cable or satellite subscription, a great and low cost way to supplement (or even supplant) that is to get a streaming device of some sort. The Apple TV and Roku are small devices (both about the size of a hockey puck) that plug into your television via HDMI cable and allow you to stream all forms of entertainment. If you’ve got an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, pretty much anything you can play on your phone, tablet, or computer can be easily sent to the Apple TV with the touch of a single button – this includes all of the videos and pictures you’ve taken on your phone. Apps like Netflix, HBO Go, and WatchESPN are also available on these devices as well. So whether you’re thinking of cutting the cable cord, or looking for a way to

Page 16

get content on that basement or bedroom tv without a shelling out for another cable box, a streaming device is for you. Netflix/Amazon Prime Subscription – When I was a kid, one of my favorite pastimes was going to the video store (remember those?) to pick out some movies to watch over the weekend. Never did I imagine that just a short time later, I wouldn’t have to leave my couch to have the same experience. Over the past decade, Netflix has completely revolutionized the way we consume television and film. For the low price of $7.99 per month (that’s less

money than I spent per month at Blockbuster growing up…), you have access to thousands of high definition movies and television series that you can watch however and whenever you like. In addition to the films and network series that are available, both Netflix and Amazon have invested in making their own exclusive content (Netflix, in particular, has done great work on this front with House of Cards and Orange is the New Black) that comes with the cost of the service. A Trip to Disneyland – If money is of no object, an all expenses paid trip to Disneyland (the one in California, not Florida…) is the perfect gift for any film fan in your life – especially the younger ones. A trip to the Magic Kingdom is a must – preferably before you’re too old to be bothered by the endless lines, exorbitant cost of concessions, and crowds. A child’s first trip to Disney is truly a magical thing and an experience that will last a lifetime.

You got Botox for What?! BY ANGELA SHELTON, PHD, MBA

Say “Botox” and people automatically think of “mature” women and deep frown lines. But these days, it can mean much more. When someone says, “I got Botox”, it could be a 20 year old female, an 80 year old man, and anything in between, for a variety of medical issues unrelated to facial appearance. Botox, or botulinum toxin A, (BTX-A) is not the same as the illness “botulism”. Botulinum toxin A was originally researched in the 1940’s as a way to block muscle movements of small areas. In the 1960’s and 70’s, researchers were using it to treat eye disorders like “crossed-eyes” and eye blinking spasms. And by the 1990’s, it was used medically for many disorders that involve muscles, in patients as young as infants. During the research on eye disorders, patients began to notice they looked younger and less fatigued after getting injections of BTX-A. This discovery led to the most common FDA-approved use, reduction of frown lines between the eyebrows. That’s the use most people associate with Botox, or with other brand names Xeomin and Dysport. But BTX-A is appreciated for other issues as well. Urinary incontinence, painful and embarrassing facial spasms, esophagus disorders, even in infants, can benefit from its use. Migraine and other headache types are now commonly treated by injections of BTX-A. Persons with Cerebral Palsy, and stroke victims, can regain muscle control and balance using it. Sufferers of cervical dystonia, which causes the head and neck to painfully pull to one side, can gain relief from injections of BTX-A. For medical applications such as these, the effects of the injections last from 3-9 months, depending on the amount injected the location of the problem, the metabolism of the patient, and other factors. One popular use of BTX-A for the past 20 years is for the treatment of sweating, medically called “hyperhidrosis”. Any area of the body can be injected to temporarily safely reduce or eliminate sweating. Underarms are the most frequently requested area. One recent patient equated it to a “life-saver”. “My underarms were wet 24 hours a day until I started getting Botox injections 3 years ago. I stayed home except for work and school because it was so embarrassing. I get about 3-4 months of dryness then it quickly starts to come back and I have to go for

Page 18

more shots. The injections are not bad since the needles are so small, and I know what it’s like without them.” The head, feet, hands, chest, groin, under the breasts, and down the back are all areas commonly treated with BTX-A for sweat reduction. Effects in these areas typically last 6 months, with an almost complete cessation of sweating within 2 weeks. Usually, the sweating will begin to come back after 4 or 5 months. One woman, Janis, who has suffered with sweaty palms since childhood, gets injections in her hands every 6 months. According to her, “The injections are worth it. Without them, my hands are always wet. I can’t always hold things without them slipping from my hands. I make stains on my pants from wiping my hands every few minutes. And I don’t dare shake hands with anyone if I’ve not had my treatment!” Often, insurance will pay part of the cost of treatment for use of BTX-A for excessive sweating. Recently, research results reported in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry showed a new and promising use for BTX-A: treatment of depression. Though researchers around the world are still debating exactly how this works, results are pretty clear that it does work. “Our emotions are expressed by facial muscles, which in turn send feedback signals to the brain to reinforce those emotions. Treating facial muscles with botulinum toxin interrupts this cycle,” study investigator Prof. Tillmann Kruger said at a press conference at the American Psychiatric Association’s 2014 Annual Meeting. Users of Botox brand, as well as Xeomin brand and Dysport brand of botulinum toxin A, have long reported feeling less stressed, less depressed and having fewer headaches, and the research now appears to prove the benefits of it. The most common uses of BTX-A are still cosmetic in nature, but the specific areas of treatment are expanding, as are the ages of patients requesting it. Men of all ages, and women ages 19-25, are the fastest growing population segments getting BTX-A for cosmetic purposes. Frown lines, sometimes referred to as “elevens”because they look like the number 11, are still the most requested facial area for treatment, but other areas commonly requested are crow’s feet, horizontal forehead lines (popular treatment request of men), “bunny lines” across the bridge of the nose, muscles related to the downward frown of lips, above the brow for a

lifted look, sides of the mouth for “smile lines”, and above the lips for “cigarette lines”, also called “straw lines”. A growing number of requests are for treatment of “gummy smile” in which the tops of the teeth and bottoms of gums show when smiling. Just a few units will soften the smile. So how do you know if you would benefit from injections of one of the types of BTX-A? First, determine your areas of concern. If it’s medical, such as muscle spasms, eye issues, or incontinence, ask your family doctor about it. If it is for excessive sweating, look online for “hyperhidrosis”or “hyperhidrosis treatment center”, or go to SweatHelp. org, the website for the International Hyperhidrosis Society (IHHS). This is a wealth of information about the problem and various treatments. They have a physician finder, and they show which MD’s in your area have additional training from the IHHS, and are designated providers. If you are looking for BTX-A for cosmetic reasons, such as frown lines, a Google search can help, as well as looking for reviews online. An informal survey by Changes Medical Spa last year in the tri-cities found that about 80% of first-time BTX-A patients found their provider through such searches. Patients should look for specific criteria for a

service provider. Here are some considerations: Are the injections done by an MD, a nurse, or someone else? Does the website and the facility evoke trust in the organization’s quality? Do they have good reviews online, on their website and social media like FaceBook? Do they offer references from previous patients? Do they offer free consultations and printed information? Do they closely examine your areas of concern, discuss options, and listen to your opinions? Do they take before and after photos? Does the price seem too good to be true? Do they provide a cost estimate before the treatment? Do they explain that Dysport brand is measured differently from Xeomin and Botox, and requires 2.75 to 3 units to get the same effect as 1 unit of Xeomin or Botox? Do they follow up to see if you are satisfied with your treatment? If you have questions about treatment or finding a provider, or about other related issues, feel free to contact me at DrShelton@ChangesMedical. com.

Obama should work with Congress on immigration

Sometime in the coming weeks, President Obama has indicated he plans in 1987 as a reason Republicans should get behind the president’s plan, but to issue executive orders on immigration reform. According to media reports, I disagree. President Reagan did not bypass Congress on reform. He worked his plan could allow millions of illegal immigrants to stay in the country, with Congress to overhaul the immigration system the previous year and among other things. used his executive power to protect children that were not covIf President Obama moves forward with this executive acered under the reform law. MarketingMel launches ETSU Mass Communications Scholarship The newly formed Department of Mass Communication at East Tennessee State University has established and awarded a new scholarship, the MarketingMel Public Relations Scholarship. The inaugural recipient is Alex Quillin, an advertising and public relations major. The scholarship fund has been established through a donation from Mary Ellen Miller to honor the fifth anniversary of MarketingMel, her public relations, marketing, and social media firm based in Johnson City. Quillin is a 19-year-old from Blountville with a 3.8 grade point average, who hopes to graduate three semesters early. She is MarketingMel’s newest intern, and will work with her during the 2014 fall semester and the 2015 spring semester. “I am absolutely thrilled to have this opportunity to work with Mary Ellen Miller and her firm, MarketingMel. I’ve heard she is the best mentor in the area, and I want to learn everything I possibly can from her,” Quillin said. “I’ve always heard that in order to be successful, I need to surround myself with successful people, and that’s exactly what I plan to do, starting with Mel.” “We have a history of great community support of scholarship for our mass communication students and I’m thrilled to have the support of Mary Ellen Miller added to that list,” said Dr. Stephen Marshall, chair of ETSU’s Department of Mass Communication. “Her support acknowledging our new department is fantastic and her continued mentoring of students is a model approach to professional development.” Miller said she was delighted to celebrate her firm’s fifth anniversary by promoting one of its cornerstones: mentoring the next generation of PR professionals. “Since founding MarketingMel five years ago, I have made it my mission to devote myself to mentoring the next generation of public re-

On Christmas, December 25, 2012, I was alone I was alone on Christmas Day, 2012. I had made plans to meet a Lady and one of her friends for coffee. I was looking forward to it. It was Christmas and I was alone. My parents had gone to my sister-in-law’s for breakfast. I was feeling pretty down and opted to stay behind. At the last minute, the woman said her friend was sick and could not make it. I was very TIM SIMPSON disappointed to say the least. Just then, a young lady sent me a message on my computer and we started talking, nothing serious. I found out she was also alone on Christmas. I wanted to go see a movie so I just sent her a text and asked if she wanted to meet me and we could be alone, together. To my surprise she did! I got there a little early and just sat and waited. I wasn’t really expecting a whole lot that evening just maybe some company and good conversation. I hadn’t spoke to her but maybe an hour and just wanted someone to see a movie with. When she pulled up behind my car, I got one glimpse of her and literally forgot how to breathe. I had never been so nervous about meeting anyone before. As I watched her get out of the car, I could not even remember what planet I was on. She had the most beautiful eyes and gorgeous smile I had ever seen in my life. During the whole movie, I was afraid to even move my hand near her. I must say that

I had never felt like this before. It was amazing to know that this kind of feeling was real. I kept telling myself over and over not to say anything stupid. She was perfect. After the movie, I took her to Shoney’s. It was the only place open on Christmas. We sat and talked until they closed. Then we sat in the car until one in the morning. We were just two lonely souls that had been through so much pain and turmoil. After a lifetime of looking, we came together on that one night outside a movie theater. God has finally given me my heart’s desire and I can only hope I can be the man that she deserves. Her name is Sarah. A better name could not have been given to a woman who makes me so very happy. Little did I know that she would become my wife and give me the most beautiful baby boy they both have filled my life with such joy. When the stress of life gets to me I can always go home to my wife fixing us dinner and my son jumping up and down for me to pick him up, yes life can be good. Happy holidays! A Bad Habit…that is actually good for you ! The dictionary definition of habit, is something that you do regularly, or an addiction. If this is the case, then I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news, my addiction is running, but the good news is – this insatiable habit just happens to be good for me. Do you have a habit? Bite your nails, pick your nose, laugh out loud, sleep Suzy in church….and the list goes on. We are human and to suggest we have habits, might imply a slight presence of imperfection in ourselves. But what if you took your habit and reshaped it, redesigned it for the better. Running became a bad habit for me when panic set in when I didn’t get to run and I could not see a time in my day/schedule to make up the missed miles. I would start to panic and all I could think about was how will I make up the miles? I learned to control the panic by logging miles, weekly,

no matter when I ran them. If I missed a day, I would add the miles to other days and as long as my weekly total/goal was achieved. I learned how to take control of my “bad habit.” Habits, both good and bad ones, are formed by repeatedly doing an action—over and over and over again. Researchers Cloyd have discovered that when an action is continually repeated for at least 66 days, it becomes an automatic response, because that’s how long it takes to form new neural pathways/patterns in the brain. Additionally, habits, whether good or bad, are powerful. The holiday season can be a good time to start new habits and perhaps drop some old habits along the way. The holidays can be a way to loosen up, try some new things and find new ways to exhibit healthy habits. 2014 DrFuhrman.com, Inc.

Scott Pratt pens another crime thriller Local author Scott Pratt will release the seventh installment of his bestselling Joe Dillard series on December 4. “A Crime of Passion” is set in Nashville, and finds Dillard defending the head of a major record label against a charge of murder. The victim? A beautiful young country singer who was a rising star. “I wanted to change up the setting for this novel and I’ve spent quite a bit of time in Nashville so it seemed like a natural fit,” Pratt said. “It’s basically a story about how money and power can corrupt the human spirit, but it’s also a pretty good legal yarn with some interesting country music personalities in the mix.” Since regaining the rights to his first three novels from The Penguin Group two years ago and publishing his work independently through Phoenix Flying, Inc., Pratt has sold nearly seven hundred thousand e-books on Amazon. He is consistently ranked among the bestselling authors in the legal thriller genre and his books are among the most highly-rated on Amazon in terms of customer reviews. “The reviews obviously speak to how readers feel about the quality of my work,” Pratt said. “And the way readers feel about the books is extremely important to me.”

Is there another Dillard in the making? “I’m going to write a standalone first, a book about a lawyer who is unjustly convicted of murder and sent to a maximum security federal prison. I’ve already started it, so I think I’ll probably finish in February or March. After that, I’ll write another Dillard book and try to have it ready by next fall. I think I’ll probably write at least three more of them and then see which way the wind is blowing.”

They call it Winter Rules. When playing golf in the winter, golfers typically play under a different set of rules. Golfers may lift their ball, clean and place it on the ground to give a better lie. Winter can typically cause the ground to either be too soft during warmer weather when the ground is mushy due to the water thawing out in the ground or too hard which happens when the ground is still frozen. As an experienced golfer, you must also play according to different rules when it comes to hitting shots. In colder weather, the ball will not compress or travel as far. Using a lower compression golf ball will help, but most golfers will typically lose 10-20% of their normal ball flight during weather less than 50 degrees. Therefore most golfers should add at least one more club and sometimes two more clubs to the normal club they will hit from a particular distance. Every golfer has hit a shot that when the club strikes the ground causes the vibration to go right through your body. It is not a good feeling and can even cause injuries in the hands, wrist and elbows. In the winter, the likelihood of this occurring increases dramatically. Golfers were many layers of clothing, which restricts movement. They are also more stiff and not a loose with their grip when hitting the ball. The most experienced golfers will shorten their swing in addition to using more club. This allows the golfer to swing slower to achieve the same distance. The slower swing decreases the chance of a painful miss hit. Golf in the winter time can be fun, but golfers must approach the game significantly different than they play in the normal summer months. This monthly article will focus on various topics in the coming year related to the rules of the game and tips to help you play better.

Re-discover DowntownErwin ERWIN, TN. --- Phase two of the revitalization to the down business district here was completed recently. New paved streets, wider sidewalks and traffic lights were installed as well as new landscaping placed in front of the businesses. The unsightly telephone poles and overhead wiring is now underground. “It’s absolutely beautiful,” said John Hash, owner of Main Street Antique Mall. “I guess it was worth going through the construction phase after all.” “I think the new improvements will see many more people coming to our downtown,” added Tony Baker, owner of Baker’s Shoe Repair and Saddle Shop, located across the street from the Unicoi County Courthouse. “It truly is pedestrian friendly.” Business has already picked up at the local eateries like the ChooChoo Café, says owner Brenda Hawley. “I just think it is absolutely wonderful! We now have one of the prettiest downtowns anywhere in our region.” So, take the time to make the short drive over to Erwin and spend some quality time [and money] with the friendly folks downtown.
