UNDERSTANDING THE IRISH BASE

THE IRISH BASE AIMS TO DEVELOP A COW WHICH CAN DELIVER THE FOLLOWING:

• HIGH SOLIDS

• GOOD FERTILITY

• INCREASED LONGEVITY

Production

Milk kgs - The base cow produces 6000kgs per lactation, the value indicates how many kgs progeny will produce above or below the base value

Fat & Protein % - Value indicates % improvments in Fat and Protein you can expect from progeny

Health

For all three values in this section negative values suggest improvement for that trait whilst positive values suggest a non-improver. Improvers will reduce the incidence of Mastitis and Lameness and reduce SCC scores

Calving

Risk of DHC - Risk of Dairy Heifer calving difficulty, if low there is less risk of calving difficulty

Heifer DcE - Calving ease on heifers, a score below 5.8% is considered suitable for heifers

Cow DcE - Calving ease for cows, a score below 3% is considered easy

Gestation Length - Days removed from gestation length, a bull with -5 days will result in calves being born 5 days earlier than the average gestation length of 283 days

Mortality - Negative figures indicate lower calf mortality

Research in the USA has identified a new genetic condition in Holstein cattle. The condition known as Calf Recumbency and Holstein USA has in more recent months been referenced it is as Early Onset Muscle Weakness and abbreviated it as [MW]. This symbol reflects that this sire has tested positive to this genetic condition and is referenced as MU-1C

Maintenance

Stature - Negative figures indicate lower stature animals

Live Weight - Average live weight is 525kgs negative values are removing weight from this, positive values add weight

Conformation

Any bar above 50% centre line indicates a bull is particularly strong for that trait.

STG Australia’s gender sorted laboratories Committed to the Australian Industry.

I have been using Fresh Sexed Semen from STG Australia for the past two joining seasons and have seen a significant change in my conception rate with it increasing from 50% in my previous fixed time AI program on heifers to now 65% with the use of Fresh Sexed Semen. I will continue to use this product in my business as the financial benefits I have received give me confidence in this technology. Stuart Burr, Ringarooma, Tasmania

STG Australia’s gender sorted laboratories are located in Camperdown, Vic and Rockhampton, Qld producing both Fresh and Frozen sorted semen for all Australian standing sires.

We’ve used fixed time AI with fresh sexed semen from ST Genetics for the past two seasons. Both years we’ve had conception rates over 70%, and because the heifers calved in such a tight group, we had 100% of our annual replacement heifers born within 3 weeks of the start of our 6 month calving block this year.

The ease of use of this product is probably it’s greatest benefit - no fishing straws out of tanks and thawing, just lock and load! For big synchro programs, I can’t think of a more user friendly product.
