One of the great things about being a friar is that our lives are filled with, as Pope Francis might say, encounters. We meet people and we hear their stories. One story comes from a few weeks back. A woman comes in to meet with me. She is the mother of a gay son. She talks about what that is like – her concern for him, the rejection he has experienced from other family members, whether there is a place for him in the church. She has been part of a ministry we have here called Always Our Children. The name of the ministry comes from a pastoral message to parents of homosexual children released by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in the 1990s. It’s a ministry that meets here every month.

She tells about being part of Always Our Children, how supportive she has found it, and she wants to get the word out to other parents that the group meets here. One of the words we often hear about this parish is that we are “welcoming.” The Always Our Children group reflects that sense of welcoming.

ur popular Mercy Camp gives our youth an understanding and appreciation of the Corporal Works of Mercy.

By engaging in small and large group activities, prayer, discussion, community outreach, and lots of fun, our youth are drawn into fuller participation in the life and work of the Church. Youth will partner with some of our parish ministries and other community ministries.

Francis Inn, a ministry of Holy Name Province, is a community composed of religious and lay people called to minister with the Franciscan spirit to the poor, homeless, alienated, and forgotten of inner city Philadelphia. Spend a week at the St. Francis Inn ministering with the staff, helping to provide basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, and realization of self-dignity to those whom they serve. The Inn ministers through a soup kitchen, thrift store, men’s shelter and women’s day center.

I

have some great friends. I’ll bet you do, too!

Some friends are new and some have been with me for decades. If I need to talk, they are always ready to listen. They have known me from my crazy twenties, through my turbulent thirties, across my exciting forties….you get the picture. A lot of my past is their past, too. So when I need to talk to them, they have a context for my comments. They also have a stake in my future and they remember things differently than I do. And sometimes, that’s not helpful.

When you have something important to work out, something that may take longer than an afternoon, you may need someone with a different skill set than your friends. You may need someone who doesn’t remember all the times your judgment could have been better, someone who wasn’t with you when things were different, someone who isn’t uncomfortable if you change your behavior or make new decisions.

Stephen Ministers are trained lay people who are confidential and candid. They won’t tell you what you should have done – they won’t tell you what you ought to do. They are judgment-free. They will listen to the same story as often as you need to tell it – from your perspective. They will ask questions to help you process from one concern to the next. They will pray for you and they will pray with you.

We’ve had Stephen Ministers for more than 25 years at St. Francis. Currently, we’re training 10 new ministers for our parish and two for Holy Infant Parish. We have an active ministry of 25 experienced ministers who walk with people through all kinds of life concerns.

If you’re dealing with something that may need a new perspective, consider requesting a Stephen Minister.

The Stephen Minister meets with their Care Receiver on a weekly basis to listen, care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support. The caring relationship lasts as long as the person is in need of care.

A

ccording to a Pew survey, 80% of people had their smartphones out during their last social encounter. Of that group, 82% said that it deteriorated the conversation. This Lent, as part of my personal fasting, I have given up the use of my phone and internet from the time I arrive home to the time the kids are asleep and all day on Sunday. In other words, I’m trying to be more aware of how technology, my phone in particular, mediates the relationships I hold most valuable.

So far, this Lenten fast has been difficult since, like many of my generation, the phone has become a constant source of interaction, entertainment, and information. Work always beckons, my “friends” three states away are always seemingly doing something more interesting than what I’m doing, and there’s always another article to read or film to watch.

Certainly, there are blessings of having this tool always at my fingertips, but the drawbacks have been becoming clearer in my life.

Coupled with my Lenten fast, I’ve been reading a challenging new book by Sherry Turkle, a clinical psychologist and sociologist at MIT, who has spent the past 30 years observing how people react and adapt to new technologies that change the way we communicate.

Using Technology in Kindergarten

P

rospective parents touring the Franciscan School often ask what types of technology are available to students in Kindergarten. The Kindergarten curriculum does include technology education and it is integrated across the curriculum for grades K-8.

Last year, our school’s Home and School Association (HSA), in addition to generous donors, helped the school raise the necessary funds to support the school’s technology initiative that brought iPads to K-2 classrooms and Chromebooks to all students in grades 5-8. The iPads are used for small group instruction, remediation and enrichment activities, practicing curriculum concepts, taking pictures, creating videos and sharing. The iPads are loaded with apps to enhance the curriculum for the students.

In addition to the iPads, each classroom is equipped with a SMART Board and teachers may reserve time in our school’s lab to work on technology skills or projects.

Digital Citizenship and online safety lessons are required for all classes in all grades. Our technology specialist, Kayla Dellinger, sees the students at least five times during the year to discuss these themes, using the Common Sense Media curriculum for the lessons.

Incorporating technology into the classroom can also be fun. In December, students in all grades participated in Hour of Code, a global movement to inspire students to learn about coding and programming. Students and teachers devoted an hour to learning about coding through fun activities that exposed students to computer science and showed them they can excel in this field.

Recently, Kindergarten students learned about green screen technology and celebrated the 100th day of school with a project that incorporated each student being videotaped in front of the green screen, sharing what they would do if they had $100.

In her latest book, Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age, Turkle argues that texts, tweets, Facebook posts, emails, instant messages, and snapchats have replaced face-to-face conversation, and that people are noticing the consequences.

A couple of the takeaways so far from Turkle’s book: 1. Our smartphones have altered our sense of self-worth and our ability to be present and alone (with ourselves, with others, and, we might say, with God). Instead, our phones offer a sense that we will never have to be alone, that our voice will always be heard, and that our self worth can be measured in our performance and number of “likes.”

2. Our smartphones are harming our ability to have valuable face-to-face conversations by splitting our attention and diminishing our capacity for empathy.

As someone who belongs to a faith tradition that values things like one-on-one encounter, silent prayer, humility, and compassion for others, the effects of smartphones on our lives should leave us a little concerned.

What’s Turkle’s suggestion? Carve out “sacred spaces” for conversation in day-to-day life—no devices at the dinner table, study and lounge spaces that are wi-fi free. Abandon the myth of multitasking for good—it is neither efficient nor conducive to empathy, she says—and instead embrace “unitasking,” one thing at a time. These are interesting suggestions for us to consider.

One of the conversations my wife and I had last week, whether we can raise children who will, when they are adults, tell their friends that they never saw their parents on their phones, or at least that they never had to beg their parents to put down their phones at dinner. Our dream instead: our kids might look back and remember fondly the “unmediated” presence, the attention, and the conversation we had as a family. This might be a crazy dream, but it certainly seems a dream worth sacrificing or this Lent.
