Sager Brings Art to Coal History of Mon Valley Photos by Cindy Meixel

10

Rachel Sager was always a storyteller. The 1989 graduate of Belle Vernon High School earned an English degree from West Virginia Wesleyan, but it wasn’t just the English language that would capture her heart. After answering an ad in the paper for a mosaic grouter, Rachel fell in love with the medium of mosaics which she defines as “pieces of things organized in a particular way.” She adopted the classical mosaic language of the Greeks and the Romans but translated it to local stone. Rachel now tells stories that go beyond a broken plate.

Sager Mosaics is right off the Great Allegheny Passage, between West Newton and Connellsville at Mile Marker 104 offering art lovers and bike riders a perfect stop to travel back to a simpler time. Nature becomes her studio for Rachel as she forages, washes, and cuts her own stone from along the Youghiogheny River, “appreciating what is right under your feet.” “I bought a coal mine by accident,” Rachel says laughing, explaining her move back to the coal town of Whitsett in 2014. Her father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather were coal miners themselves, so her involvement with geology has come full circle.

Whitsett has National Historic status as a classic coal company town.

That coal mine, the Banning No. 2 Mine, would prove to be one of the greatest challenges of her life. The giant cement canvas now titled The Ruins Project is an outdoor mosaic art installation telling the story of Southwestern Pennsylvania’s coal history. Artists from all over the world have contributed to The Ruins. While each artist brings their own style to the outdoor museum, Rachel makes sure each learns about Pennsylvania’s coal history, so their contribution has a connection to it. “I’ve always loved my place, people, the topology,” Rachel says of Mon Valley. They are “my kind of people, blue-collar working people.” It may not all be beautiful, she continued, but she hopes to be a “champion for Fayette County” and tell the world Mon Valley’s story. Rachel is still a storyteller, only now by nature. Visit SagerMosaics.com for more information.

Wine making runs in the blood of the Vinoski family, whose surname literally translates to “Son of Winemaker.” His ancestors once served wine to the Dukes, Princes, and Kings of Poland. Walt started in the wine making business at the ripe age of 4 as he was tasked with picking and sorting the fruit alongside his grandfather Andrew. Walt earned a PhD in Business and Economics and is a recognized expert in Electrical Power Generation. His wife, Roxanne, studied accounting, and both work in the power generation business with Vinoski & Associates. During Walt’s business travels, he

Their vision became reality in 2007 when Roxanne and Walt built Greendance Winery after partnering with a local berry farm. The awardwinning wines fueled the desire to showcase a private family label that produced wines more commonly found in Europe and on the West Coast of the United States. Their vision is to create a soft drinkable young wine for others to enjoy. Now, Walt keeps the family tradition alive at his own royal palace, The Vinoski Winery Castle in Rostraver. The castle was purchased in 2017 to serve as an enchanting setting for sharing their world-class wines.

If the history of the Vinoski family and their castle isn’t enough reason to visit, perhaps the fun and entertainment they have planned can tickle your taste buds as much as their high-quality wine. September kicks off with a blues music performance on the castle’s patio by Scott and Rosanna on Sunday the 1st. Grab a bite to eat as the Iron City Food Truck will be serving creative quesadillas, burritos, and tacos as the Second Wind Band performs southern rock classics on the patio Saturday, September 7th. Kaitlyn Rose stops by the castle on the 8th to share country, soft rock, and original tunes. Don’t miss the annual Grape Stomp at the Castle with musical performances by Sam Brooks and Brother Jeep on September 14th. The David Gurwin Trio is back at the Castle on September 15th performing jazz. Enjoy meatball sandwiches from the Miss Meatball Food Truck while enjoying country music from the Shelly McCombie Band after the Castle’s first-ever cornhole tournament on the 22nd. Rock music from Right Turn Cycle takes over the patio the next day. November Blue will be at the castle sharing their Americana, country, and folk rock music on September 28th, and make sure to grab food from the Fat Boys Food Truck. Mark Shuttleworth closes out September with 60s and 70s acoustic classics on the 29th.

Nemacolin Castle:

History Undisturbed Photos courtesy of Brownsville Historical Society Towering on a bluff over Brownsville Pennsylvania, on a Northward bend of the Monongahela River, Nemacolin Castle stands as a monument to the Mon Valley’s role in American History. Inhabited by the same family for 2 centuries and operated by the local historical society as a museum today, the Castle is a window into the American way of life and how much it has changed with the generations. The castle and surrounding area have played host to many pivotal events in American history. Functioning as a Native American trading post for thousands of years, the British originally erected a fort in the area to protect against the warring Iroquois tribe. Following American Independence, the area incorporated as Brownsville in 1785. The trading post grew into a vibrant stop during the era of westward expansion following the Revolutionary War. 20

Built by Jacob Bowman during the years immediately following the American Revolution, Nemacolin Castle contains 22 rooms and countless artifacts marking the passage of more than 2 centuries of American history. “There is so much history here we haven’t even scratched the surface,” says Rocky Brashear, chairman of the Brownsville Historical Society. Bowman established his family in the area as a prominent trader around the close of the 18th century and used his wealth and standing to build the red-brick, late-Victorian structure that still stands today. Appointed as Postmaster of Brownsville by George Washington, Bowman was a key player in the establishment of the town as an important location for commerce and travel in the newly established United States of America.

21

Mon River Valley Magazine

Donated to Fayette County by the Bowman family in the 1960s, the castle has been used as a museum of American history for the past 30 years, and the Historical Society has been hard at work revitalizing the landmark. With the help of his 15-member board of directors, Brashear is in the midst of a room-by-room restoration of the castle. The society opened a new room, the upstairs pantry, to the tour for the first time beginning in the Spring of 2019. Interest in Nemacolin Castle has never been greater with 2018 setting records for visitors in a single year.

22

Nemacolin Castle is operated from April to January and hosts a wide range of events throughout the year. Tours vary on a seasonal basis, starting with the historical tour during Spring and Summer, ghost tours through the Fall, and a 19th century-themed Christmas tour for the Winter months. Wine tastings, sunrise breakfasts, and other special events are also hosted with registration available through Eventbrite.com. Private tours are available to parties of 8 or more by request. Buses and large groups are encouraged to visit and spend time on the grounds with ample parking and picnic areas around the property. To learn even more about the area, The Historic Northside of Brownsville offers a Front Street Walking Tour, led by a local historian. Visitors hear about how Frank Burd played a major part in how the country came to be and about all the dignitaries who once lived on the street. The tour is full of beautiful Victorian homes, most of which are on the National Registry. Tickets for historical tours cost $15.00 per person with all proceeds going to the preservation of the castle. Information and tour schedules can be found by calling 724-322-2422. Urban Legends: Tales from a Monongahela Estate

W

hether it be stairs to seemingly nowhere in

Pittsburgh’s Southside or an abandoned farmhouse and barn in Lancaster, if you have ever traveled throughout state, you have seen those odd and mysterious locations. You have also probably heard

infamous legends of the Green Man that haunts tunnels in a desolate dark valley. Or tales of a burned down orphanage on a hill, where screams are said to be heard at all hours on the eve of a full moon. From Pittsburgh to Philadelphia, folklore legends abound. Photo by Stephan Hazuga. Other photos by Lynda Stewart, except where noted. Mon River Valley Magazine

On Coyle Curtain Road in Monongahela, just such a building exists. The center of endless lore over the years, the building that is currently known as the Demon House Haunted Attraction, stands shrouded in tales of past terrors. There is an actual grave in the back yard, and there could potentially be others buried elsewhere. It is Photo by Stephan Hazuga

very likely that stories of a witch having lived there and performed witchcraft are true, and she may have even cursed the land. These are just a few of the elements that make this property so mysterious. Named Emerald Hill House by earlier owners, there have always been ample rumors of haunted activity that swarmed the 19-room mansion, which was originally commissioned in the late 19th century. But it seems that with the addition of the haunted house, not only was the activity confirmed, but it was also amplified.

26

In Spring of 2019, Jack and Katrina from the Travel Channel’s Portals to Hell series were the first to brave an investigation at the Demon House. Their research into local historical records showed that those who lived in the house did indeed suffer many tragedies. The evidence they collected, including intelligent communication recorded during their EVP sessions confirmed this. They concluded that this mansion is without a doubt inhabited by spirits who could very likely be the original owners, looking to take back their home.

C

hris and Veronica Pirt both worked as special

effects make-up artists at the Demon House before

jumping at the opportunity 4 years ago to own Monongahela’s haunted attraction. Chris, a graduate of Tom Savini’s School for Special Make-Up Effects which is located just down the river in Monessen, was aware that the previous owner had been having some spirit encounters but hadn't experienced anything himself. Until he and his wife became owners of the property, that is. That’s when things got weird. As Chris worked on all of the sets throughout the haunted house, which he hand-built himself, he was reminded that although he may have been working alone, he was not left unsupervised. Phantom footsteps were heard. Cabinets opened by themselves.

Starting Friday, September 6th, The Demon House will be open for the 2019 Halloween season every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through November 3.

A child's ball was moved from one room to another and rolled across the floor. These encounters with the spirit realm continue today. Even when locked, the heavy front door flings open. Blacked out figures wander the premises. Visitors compliment the young Victorian actress on the second floor. Except the actress doesn’t actually exist.

It’s not all blood and gore though! The ominous Demon House gets into the Christmas spirit wanting to know if their visitors have been Naughty or Nice with the annual holiday-themed attraction in late November into early December. Visitors bring donations for Toys for Tots and get spooked in return. For more information visit DemonHouse.com. 28

Crabtree finished his career as a wide receiver for the Panthers collecting 68 passes, for an average of 16.4 yards per catch and rushing 867 yards on 190 carries before heading off to the NFL.
