IS OSHA @ Your Door? November 4, 2016 At a recent Miami County Safety Council

Workshop, HR Associates learned a few insights into the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), and its new penalties & practices. The Department of Labor has adjusted penalties for its agencies & in OSHA’s case, they increased 56%. A single safety violation penalty has been increased from $7,000 to $12,471. If you do happen to get a visit from OSHA and receive a subsequent penalty, don’t just write them a check. Through an appeal process, OSHA may reduce the amount. A good safety record or good faith assessment can net a 10% reduction and if you are a smaller company, up to a 40% reduction of a penalty. In addition, a 15% reduction can be achieved if the company implements a quick fix to the problem.

Safety Corner Before you do it, take time to think through it.

OSHA’s inspection process includes a Presentation of Credentials, an Opening Conference, a Walk Around for specific violations and a closing conference. The results can take up to 6 months before a company can begin an appeals process. Companies should develop an OSHA protocol so as to be prepared for a possible visit. A 3 or 4 person safety team, including shift leaders, should accompany the OSHA Rep & take lots of pictures and notes. Always allow the OHSA Rep to lead the direction of the visit, he may only want to see a specific area which may have been reported. Asking the OSHA Rep follow up questions may expedite a quick fix to a problem. Being proactive in the search for safety issues should include employee involvement. A Safety Perception Survey of the employees could reveal trouble spots within a plant. Team based Safety Incentive Programs can keep safety in the forefront of the workforce. As Bob Heater of Safety4U says, “ Reward for safety activities, not results.”

Here is another preemptive move companies can use, OSHA does offer on-site consultations where they will tour a plant and point out violations which need corrected. Companies that do this will have a designated amount of time to fix any issues with no penalties levied. Inviting a government agency into your backyard may not be for everyone but possibly avoiding tens of thousands in penalties could just keep you in the black for another year.

A new reality for Washington DC:

Reduce individual tax rates to 12%, 25%, & 33% with 0% for many individuals. A middle-class family with 2 kids get a 35% income tax cut. Business tax rates reduced to 15%. Increased tariffs on foreign imports. $1 Trillion Infrastructure Plan over ten years. Repeal & Replace Obamacare with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). Allow the purchase of health insurance across state lines. Above-the-line deduction for childcare costs. Renegotiate NAFTA. Federal hiring freeze to reduce the Federal workforce through attrition. Cut unneeded Fed regulations & for every new regulation, 2 have to be eliminated. Term Limits on all members of Congress. 5-year ban on White House & Congressional officials becoming lobbyists after leaving office. (Source: DonaldJTrump.com)

The Process Any good staffing firm’s first priority is to market the job seekers who apply. Staffing firms consider themselves an applicant’s advocate, in most cases the firm does not get paid unless they place a candidate on an assignment. August 17, 2016

Best practices in staffing require a company to conduct in-depth interviews and background checks on every applicant. Recruiters should review an applicant’s experience and advise them as to the current skills on demand. A recruiter will clarify what type of position the candidate is looking for, a good fit for, and who’s hiring. Great recruiters are considered Job Therapists to applicants but they are also the Gatekeepers for their clients. A recruiter can offer employer insights so an applicant may tweak their resume to improve their chances of a second interview with a potential employer. Applicants should prepare & dress-for-success for their interview, if they want the Gatekeeper to offer-up these insights. Honest communication between candidates and recruiters is crucial to the job search process. A good recruiter will always ask permission before sending a resume to a client, for example. Through good communication and best practices, an HR Associates’ recruiter will never forget an applicant; our Ultra Staff software will not allow it, and our recruiters live in that software. Future skill searches will inevitably bring an associate’s resume to the top of a list because of the skill set listed. Expressing to an applicant that the recruiter’s main goal is to work hard on their behalf is usually the key to great communication. According to the American Staffing Association (ASA), more than 3 million people work for America’s staffing companies each week, with 76% of those jobs being full-time. Great staffing companies use great recruitment processes and their clients come to depend on those processes to save time and money. Finally, job seekers should just get out there and find a few recruiters to work for them. You really can’t beat the price at HR Associates.

what her favorite rock was and she said, “Diamonds, of course!” Miss Byram said she has been busy helping her best friend,

Megan also said she finally got to meet her Alaskan niece and nephew, who now live in Greenville. There should be a little more family JOY this Christmas. Recruiter, Mareena Emrick, said her son, Easton, has started talking more with

“Octagon” being his favorite word & shape. Mareena has been researching the placement of her son into an early learning program. She has only bought 2 Christmas presents for Easton so far, but is on the lookout for a Black Friday deal. At work, Mareena says she has seen an improvement in the quality of candidates, as

From The President’s Desk November 15, 2016 President, Heather Risner is glad the Presidential Election is over and is optimistic for what is ahead for

businesses in America in 2017 & beyond. She believes corporate tax relief could really boost the economy and wages. After a strong 3rd quarter and a few forward thinking decisions, HR Associates is in a great position to better serve our clients into the coming year. Heather’s oldest son is still on target to graduate from Wright State (WS) with a BS in Organizational Leadership in 2017.

“C” recently got a promotion and his own store @ Sunglass Hut while maintaining a full time class schedule. On a mental note, over the last six months, we think he has had an epiphany that his parents may not be so out-of-touch with reality as he previously thought. With his Gen Ed requirements soon to be behind him, Heather’s WS Sophomore was told by his advisor that he will be considered a full time student in the College of Engineering in the spring. “D’s” Mechanical Engineering major seems to have a little more shelf life in it. Heather’s Covington Junior, finished another Frosty Brown Fall Baseball season with a 360 batting average and is looking forward to Spring Baseball at Covington High. Heather wants to wish everyone a Safe and Happy Holiday Season. Don’t forget Santa’s cookies.
