WE ARE THE WAYFINDING & WAYSHOWING BENCHMARK... From small office buildings to complex hospitals, universities, and real estate developments, SN&F utilizes environmental graphics to reduce visual communication to their essential components and apply current technology and contemporary design in developing Signage and Wayfinding/Wayshowing solutions within the built environment.

W H O W E A R E / What we do

The Design Office of Steve Neumann & Friends is the end product of the successful merging of two exacting disciplines: Architecture and Graphic Design.

“We are a team of graphic and architectural signage designers, not fabricators. We are not in the practice of architecture, but are in the practice of solving visual communication branding and wayshowing problems within architecture.”

From small office buildings to complex hospitals, universities, libraries and real estate developments, we reduce visual communication problems to their essential components and apply current technology and contemporary design in developing visual communication systems through an architectural medium. It requires experience in the two-dimensional field of graphic design, advertising and design communication arts together with an understanding of three-dimensional architecture to develop environmental signage wayfinding systems that will stand the test of time (both aesthetically and physically). We approach each signage program as a problem unique unto itself. The resulting solutions reflect input from all parties: Client, Architect, Graphic Designer and User. The result being a wayfinding program which solves the user’s visual communication problems. Our services can vary from project to project, however, in each case our primary responsibility is to give the end user a signage system that “works.” From the preparation of programming through design, construction documents, bidding and fabrication/installation supervision, the client determines which services are needed to allow for completion of their project within available budgets and time. Rather than delegating the work and project responsibilities to the staff, Mr. Neumann believes that it is his responsibility to oversee and participate on all aspects of the project. He will be the primary client contact, furthermore, he will make a personal commitment that the solution and implementation will be a success.

T H E F O U N D E R / Principal Designer

B. Steve Neumann is the president and founder of The Design Office of Steve Neumann & Friends, Houston, Texas, a national practice recognized as one of the country’s premier environmental signage/ wayfinding firms specializing in health and institutional signage programs. Educated in Communication Design and Photographic Illustration at the Rochester Institute of Technology, his professional experience previous to the formation of Steve Neumann & Friends in 1974, was as Senior Design Director for the Kelvin Group, Inc., one of Houston’s leading pure design studios. Since commencing business, Mr. Neumann has participated in major corporate trademark and identification programs and the development of health, institutional and commercial signage programs acting as primary system programmer, principal designer, management coordinator, technical fabrication and installation consultant. His primary expertise is the development and management of large scale hospital and (corporate) institutional signage programs, designing systems which meet client budget, design and time constraints. Due to the unusually large scope perimeters involved in current commissions, his office has been instrumental in the development of industry benchmarks for construction documentation and implementation manuals utilizing extensive CADD and desktop publishing. As a founding professional member of the Society of Environmental Graphic Designers (SEGD), he has participated extensively in the organizations’ ADA development round tables as well as a featured speaker at their annual national meetings (1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1999 and 2000). He served a 9 year term on the SEGD National Board and was highly active in the coordination and planning of the 2001 SEGD National Convention held in Miami Beach, Florida and the development of their education initiative and web-site development. Additionally recognized as a professional industry spokesman, he has been a featured lecturer at the “Sign Users Conference,” (Signs of the Times/Identity Magazine annual conference) in 1991, 1992. He is a sustaining member of the American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA), and the Art Director’s Club of Houston (ADCH), and has participated on the Executive Committee of Billboards Limited, a Houston lobby group for the control of visual communication pollution in our environment.

Reflecting the everyday experiences one might observe in the common behavior of those under stress, “Betty” establishes the needs and expectations required of all patients and visitors to healthcare and institutional facilities, allowing for absolute User satisfaction within the wayshowing program. “We all have a family member who drives an old Volvo, tries to find everything themselves before asking for directions, while wearing thick glasses in an attempt to read sign copy that was originally too small to read at the distance required. They are fiercely independent and will walk around in circles until they ultimately find their destination...after passing it multiple times.” Note, that we are not talking “finding” our way through a facility. In a pro-active mode, we S.0163 are “showing” your guests how to discover their destination with signage that is legible, readable, properly placed and if necessary, repetitive. All to assure them of their travels thru the built environment, and then back to where theyS.0162 began!

Complete signage development for a comprehensive complex wide interior and exterior signage program within the largest for-profit hospital in the United States. While the initial design concepts were developed under the direction of other graphic firms, SN&F has the unique primary responsibility to successfully implement both an exterior campus wide signage program for 38+ buildings in and around Rochester Minnesota, as well as develop, implement and supervise construction/fabrication of a main circulation wayfinding program within both the downtown campus and at Saint Marys. For both programs, SN&F was responsible for the product development for all phases of signage implementation, legend schedule preparation, bid and/or negotiation packages, construction administration and vendor liaison. Implementation of the corporate standards at regional clinics throughout Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa as well as at the Mayo-Scottsdale Clinic Campus, Thunderbird Clinic and Johnson Research facilities in Scottsdale, AZ.

With 92 facilities within the northwest corner of Wisconsin, the Marshfield Clinic (Marshfield, WI) revised its corporate branding and image with the implementation of a unique identity program developed by SN&F. The clinical system supports regional hospitals with physicians and primary care resources separate from standard Hospital programs. The unique adaptation of the corporate “cross and cat-tails presented in the form of an acrylic flute atop curved faced modular graphic panels, illustrates a design solution which sets the clinic apart from the visual identity of other competitors. During the day, it is an appealing form of visual identity, but at night (or on dark, winter days in Wisconsin), the custom LED illuminated acrylic flute stands out as a unique homing image within the visual clutter of the rural environment. The use of very high quality fabrication, paint application, and LED illumination reflects the desire to have a signage program which meets the longevity criteria established by their in-house wayfinding taskforce.

FROST BANK Frost National Bank - Corporate Branding (Legibility Upgrade) San Antonio, TX SN&F was asked to review the overall corporate branding for this traditional San Antonio based banking system. The Frost Bank “sunburst” has been a statewide icon for many years, yet it “reads” poorly within the environment. Addressing this concern, SN&F optimized the logo, achieving better legibility and continued recognition, ultimately applying it within a contemporary convex shaped freestanding sign form. The new logotype, coupled with a statewide expansion, permitted the development of a corporate signage conversion as they retrofitted the signage program within their existing banking system as well as implementation at expansion branches in Houston, Austin, Corpus Christi, McAllen and San Antonio. SN&F master planned concepts and sign “styles” were implemented by banking in-house staff through multiple vendors as required for a single day “roll-out” of their new acquisitions.

Complete signage development for a comprehensive interior and exterior signage program for the largest not-for-profit hospital in the United States. The signage program was retrofitted into the existing seven major buildings and off-site outpatient facilities. This program allowed complete in-house maintenance of system without continued design assistance. Implementation was driven by the signage needs for a major Hospital addition (Dunn Tower and a new “front” door/ main lobby,) as well as poor existing signage within the balance of the facility. Undertaken as one massive implementation, SN&F coordinated and supervised the implementation efforts of both the Hospital’s in-house staff and the Graphics Contractor fabrication efforts.

ST. JOHN HOSPITAL & Medical Center, Van Elslander Pavillion Detroit, MI The original scope of this project was a complete image, wayfinding, wayshowing implementation throughout this established Detroit healthcare provider. Financial constraints due to the national/local economy required adaptation for implementation within the newly constructed Van Elslander Heart Center. This highly modular and interchangeable program is based upon the use of magnetic graphic inserts which can adapt to a myriad of layout permutations. Using stock elements of the ASI Infinity System and a in-house support staff, this program adds a touch of “color and graphic identity to the overall interior program.

VANTAGE COMPANIES Dallas Technology Center Dallas, TX Vantage Development (Dallas) required a major, statement piece to identify a substantial regional technology park. The resulting 60’ warped, bow shaped, double sided monument established a benchmark branding opportunity. Viewed at distances of over three (3) miles, it has created a very clean, elegant wayfinding point on the visual horizon.

SPOHN HOSPITAL Corpus Christi, TX

Spohn Hospital is located on the bay front of Corpus Christi Bay, which required material and paint specifications to endure the demands of hurricane force winds and the abrasive nature of salt-water abuse. These branding elements all have a very high gloss finish (permitting automotive style refinishing) as well as internal structural detailing to permit almost any weather condition which might be thrown at it.

2005 AIA - HOUSTON Sandcastle Competition - Golden Bucket Winners Houston, TX With a team of 11 creative designers and their spouses, a 10 cubic yard mound of damp sand, buckets of old rusty shovels (used from the last 9 competitions), rakes, mortar tools, spoons, squirt bottles, lots of buckets & pails, 1 ice cream scoop, 8 Igloos, 3 tents and a remembrance of our childhood, The Design Office of Steve Neumann & Friends took on the challenge of 84 Architectural & General Contractor teams in the 2005 AIA Houston Sandcastle Competition and proceeded to demonstrate that a Wayfinding Signage Consultant has the capacity to create and execute the best sandcastle, bar none. Awarded for our childish efforts (playing pancake, dribble, pack and smooth) SN&F upset the architectural community by winning the prestigious Golden Bucket, for a hand crafted traditional sandcastle (First Place for those who have not competitively played in the sand). As SN&F was the only signage consultant represented in this year’s competition, it was an absolute show of creative force which only further demonstrates our design capabilities within the architectural community. If we can do this with sand, imagine what we can do for your wayfinding & signage program.
