America’s Biggest Comic Arts Festival

http://ncsfest.com

WELCOME TO NCSFEST It’s our great pleasure to welcome you to Huntington Beach and the inaugural NCSFest, the biggest FREE comic arts festival ever staged in North America.

CONTENTS

Without exception, comic and cartoon art touches all our lives. The baby adorned in cute cartoon clothing, the favorite cuddly toys, the first picture books. Our small children adore their animated movies and TV shows, their cartoon character t-shirt, the cartoon backpack. It’s the action figures our youngsters play with, the comic books they collect, the graphic novels they read as young adults. Our teens are glued to the memes on their phones and the video games on their Playstations. The biggest movie blockbusters are based on superhero comics and beloved cartoons. It’s the birthday card you buy your spouse, the commercials on tv, the billboard on the freeway, the van beside you in traffic. It’s the editorial cartoon in your daily paper, the joke in your inbox, the logo on dad’s baseball cap and the storybook that Grandma reads the grandkids.

6-7 Saturday Big Tent events

To celebrate this incredible artform, we have gathered more than one hundred of the world’s most renowned creators, from all over the states and as far afield as France, Australia, Argentina, Canada and the UK. We have family zones, workshops, readings, demos, exhibitions, personal appearances, a giant marketplace and a ton of fun events for all the family. We hope you enjoy NCSFest!

Being a comic hero has traditionally been the dominion of the male. This is about to be challenged through a new exhibition called “Héro(ïn)es” featuring iconic comic heroes re-interpreted and reimagined in their female form. The exhibition features more than 25 original artworks where comic artists have been challenged to reinvent their chosen male hero in female form and contribute a narrative to explain their choice of heroine and their perceptions of how women are represented in the comic genre. An exhibition imagined by artist Jean Christophe Deveney and produced by Lyon Comics Festival, France.

Michael Fry reads from How to be a Supervillian. Victor Spoil comes from a long line of famous supervillains and he’s fully expected to join their ranks one day. But to his family’s utter disappointment, Victor doesn’t have a single bad-guy bone in his body. He won’t run with scissors, he always finishes his peas, and he can’t stand to be messy. Hopeless! As a last-ditch effort before they give up and let him be a–gasp!–civilian, Victor’s exasperated parents send him to apprentice under a disgraced supervillain called The Smear. This matchup starts off as a complete disaster, but Victor and The Smear eventually find that they have a lot to learn from each other. When the stakes get high as Victor is forced to choose between his mentor and his family morals (or lack thereof)…what will the world’s nicest bad guy do? THE WONDERFUL, HORRIBLE EC COMICS BOOK! by Grant Geissman In 1947 Bill Gaines inherited a small, struggling comic-book company called EC Comics. Over the next eight years Gaines and EC reinvented what a comic book could be, launching “A New Trend in Comics,” with titles like Tales from the Crypt, Crime SuspenStories, Weird Science, and even a humor comic called MAD. EC delighted in publishing gory, morbid horror and crime comics that had snap, ironic endings. But they also published the first true-to-life war comics, the first “real” science fiction comics, and morality tales about such then-taboo subjects as racism, bigotry, vigilantism, drug addiction, police corruption, and anti-Semitism. TASCHEN presents the full, fascinating story of this legendary company, written and designed by Grant Geissman, the world’s foremost expert on EC Comics. This is the ultimate EC Comics compendium, with more than 1,000 illustrations including covers, interior pages and panels, rare photos, vintage original artwork, and some of their most notorious complete stories. Many of the cover images are reproduced from Gaines File Copies, which are widely regarded as the best surviving copies of the EC Comics.

THURSDAY EVENT 16th May 2019

AN EVENING WITH VIZ! Featuring: Simon Thorp, Graham Dury, Steve McGarry and Luke McGarry Date: Venue: Price:

Thursday 16th May 2019, 8.30pm Hyatt Regency - Mariners Ballroom $10 (Single event pass required)

Since debuting 40 years ago, the bawdy and outrageous Viz Comic has become a national treasure in Britain. At its zenith, it was selling an astonishing 1.2 million copies per issue, and it continues to be a surreal and vulgar staple of the British diet. NCSFest is delighted to give Southern California (and all those transplanted Brits!) a chance to spend an evening in the company of Buster Gonad, Roger Mellie, The Fat Slags et al, and the two reprobates responsible for bringing them to life, Simon Thorp and Graham Dury. A 90-minute show in which Graham and Simon… and a select band of invited cartoonists… will roast the Royals and test your swearing vocabulary!

PART ONE:

PART TWO:

Forget the Simpsons, the Munsters and the Trumps … the Royals are the whole world’s favorite family. Whether they’re abdicating, waving at some plebs from the back of a Rolls-Royce, or having another one of their interminable weddings, the Windsors – Mom Liz, Pop Phil, and their hilarious brood of comically dysfunctional kids – are an endless source of fascination for monarchy fans on both sides of the Atlantic.

(We couldn’t decide which pun we liked best…)

LIKE “THE CROWN,” BUT WITH MORE SWEARING

At Viz Comic, they are just as obsessed with them as everybody else… if not more so. Since the first issue hit the newsstands back in 1979, Viz has relentlessly chronicled every aspect of their lives in cartoons, articles, ads and photo-stories, and now they’d like to share a few highlights with you. NCSFest would be honored if you would join us for this hugely respectful and majestic look-back at 40 years of Viz Comic’s Royal coverage. Trigger warnings: Includes references to the Duchess of York’s arse, Prince Charles’s ludicrous ears, and graphic depictions of the Queen Mum’s teeth.

SNATCHPHRASE! OR HOLLYWOOD SWEARS!

The rules are very simple. Watch as cartoonists Graham Dury, Simon Thorp, Steve McGarry and Luke McGarry and guests illustrate definitions from the latest edition of Viz Comic’s Profanisaurus – War and Piss. Then flick through your FREE mini copy of the book to guess which definition is being illustrated. At the turn of the 1980s, if you wanted to read comics, you were pretty much confined to Spider-Man, Superman and their Spandexed stablemates at Marvel and DC. Then, in 1981, along came ‘Love and Rockets’, a crudely printed, self-published comic from three California brothers, Jaime, Gilbert and Mario, collectively known as Los Bros Hernandez. It remains one of the most original and influential comic projects in history. Neil Gaiman once said “I don’t really understand why the material of Love and Rockets isn’t widely regarded as one of the finest pieces of fiction of the last 35 years. Because it is.” Join Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez in conversation with fellow artists and fans Sean Phillips and Ed Brubaker.

He has drawn dozens of graphic novels, and this year will see the release of his first picture book, ‘My Teacher is a Robot’, and a new Star Wars book, ‘Rey and Pals’. The National Cartoonists Society, the world’s largest and most prestigious organization of professional cartoonists, was born in 1946 when leading cartoonists got together to entertain the troops. They found that they enjoyed each other’s company and decided to get together regularly. Over the years, many of the greatest names in the history of cartooning have joined our ranks, from Milton Caniff and Ronald Searle to Jack Kirby, Charles Schulz, Garry Trudeau, Cathy Guisewite, Lynn Johnston, Mort Drucker, Jack Davis, Mort Walker, Sergio Aragones and Will Eisner. Today, the NCS membership roster includes more than 500 of the world’s major cartoonists, working in all branches of the profession, including newspaper comic strips and panels, comic books, editorial cartoons, book and magazine illustration, animation, gag cartoons, greeting cards, advertising, online cartooning and more.

The Society’s charitable arm was formed in 2005 to continue the charitable and educational works that have been a hallmark of the NCS since its inception in 1946, and it continues the outstanding work done in the name of the NCS by our predecessor organization, the Milt Gross Fund. The NCSF is a registered 501(c)(3) charity that works in tandem with the NCS to advance the ideals and standards of the profession, to stimulate and encourage aspiring cartoonists through scholarships and educational programs, provides financial assistance to cartoonists and their families in times of hardship and need, whether that means a contribution to medical bills, or something as simple as assisting with NCS membership dues.

WHAT ARE THE REUBENS? Prior to 1983, the Reuben Awards Dinner was held in New York, usually at the Plaza Hotel. Since then, the event has expanded into a full weekend and is held in a different city each year. Recent locations have included Boston, San Francisco, Memphis, Las Vegas and Washington, D.C. The weekends give NCS members a chance to network and mingle, catch up with old friends and connect with new. Guest speakers have included Garry Trudeau, Matt Groening and Ralph Steadman, and events range from seminars and discussion panels to cocktail parties, buffet breakfasts and karaoke nights. We’ve roasted the likes of Sergio Aragones and Mell Lazarus, partied at the palatial home of Cathy Guisewite, picnicked in the grounds of the Charles M. Schulz Museum, commandeered Graceland for a private party and disco-danced on pirate ships off the coast of Cancun!

At the Reuben Awards dinner, the NCS recognizes the year’s outstanding talents in all the various fields of the profession through the Division Awards, determined by a combination of specialist juries, online voting and chapter juries. The Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award is awarded by unanimous vote of the NCS Board of Directors, as are the Gold Key Hall of Fame award and the Silver T-Square, which recognizes outstanding service to the Society and the profession. The recipient of our profession’s highest honor, the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year, is chosen by a secret ballot of the members.
