At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the domestic piano with its newly expanded tonal range offered a way to recreate orchestral compositions that would not have been available otherwise, at first in the form of piano arrangements for four hands and later for two pianos as well. The number of piano transcriptions that were published in print 675754044312 quickly surpassed the number of original compositions for this combination. While some of the transcriptions were scored by the composers themselves or by their pupils, most were created by professional arrangers who worked for the publishing houses.

BIS SACD 1964 Label Code 419 Price Code P MOZART PIANO CONCERTOS NOS. 19 & 23 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 19 in F Major, K. 459 Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major K. 488 ARTISTS: Ronald Brautigam, fortepiano, Die Kolner Akademie, Michael Alexander Willens In just two years, between 1784 and 1786, Mozart composed no less than twelve piano concertos – a staggering number. Often described as one of the most light-hearted and buoyant among these is the Concerto in F major K 459, sometimes called ‘the second Coronation Concerto’. The nickname comes from the fact that Mozart would later choose to perform it, along with the ‘Coronation Concerto’ in D major, during the festivities surrounding the coronation of Emperor Leopold II in 675754044084 Frankfurt-am-Main in 1790. Its companion work on this fourth disc in Ronald Brautigam’s survey hails from the same period: begun in 1784, the Concerto in A major K 488 was completed in March 1786, at the same time as Mozart was putting the finishing touches to his opera Le nozze di Figaro. It is one of only three piano concertos in which Mozart uses clarinets in the orchestra, resulting in a very particular sound world, especially in the magical slow movement. Mozart clearly held the work in high regard, and described it as one of his most select compositions ‘which I keep just for myself and an élite circle of music lovers’, and later audiences have agreed with him. Ronald Brautigam has been described as ‘an absolutely instinctive Mozartian… with melodic playing of consummate beauty’ (International Record Review), and he is once again supported by the period orchestra Die Kölner Akademie conducted by Michael Alexander Willens in a partnership which more than one reviewer has termed ‘ideal’.

BIS SACD 1984 Label Code 419 Price Code P MENDELSSOHN – DOUBLE CONCERTO & OCTET Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Concerto in D minor for Violin, Piano & Strings, Octet in E flat major, Op. 20. ARTISTS: Polina Leschenko, piano, Richard Tognetti, violin, Austrialian Chamber Orchestra, Members of the Australian Chamber Orchestra Among the many child prodigies that have made their mark in the history of music, Felix Mendelssohn is, along with Mozart, possibly the most impressive. By the age of fifteen he had already composed 13 string symphonies and a number of concertos, and his first ‘proper’ symphony was not far away. He wasn’t just highly productive, however – his contemporaries already recognized the high quality of the works he produced: ‘Felix Mendelssohn composes with the 675754044091 greatest conceivable ease and with inextinguishable abundance of spirit, the most difficult pieces…’ wrote a German reviewer in 1822. Both pieces recorded here were composed with Mendelssohn’s friend and violin teacher, Eduard Ritz, in mind. Felix himself premièred the Double Concerto in D minor with Ritz in May 1823 at one of the famous Sunday concerts at the Mendelssohn residence in Berlin, but except for a second outing later the same year, the work remained unperformed until 1957. Here the piano part – in turn quick-silvery and lyrical – is defended by the Russianborn pianist Polina Leschenko, making her first appearance on BIS. She is partnered by Richard Tognetti, artistic director and leader of the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Tognetti also leads seven of his colleagues from the ACO in the String Octet in E flat major, which Mendelssohn composed as a birthday present for Eduard Ritz. Written two years after the concerto, the octetonly received its first public performance in 1836 but quickly became immensely popular. Although it belongs to the genre of chamber music, Mendelssohn himself underlined that it was to be played by all the instruments ‘in symphonic orchestral style’. He also explored the orchestral potential of the work at a performance of his Symphony No.1 in 1829, replacing the symphony’s minuet with an expanded arrangement of the Octet’s scherzo.

FINAL CYCLE CHAPTER 55 RELEASE IN NOV 2013 BIS SACD 1991 Label Code 419 Price Code P J.S. BACH – CANTATAS, VOL. 53 Johann Sebastian Bach: In allen meinen Taten, BMV 97, ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, BMV 177, Es ist Heil uns kommen her, BMV 9 ARTISTS: Bach Collegium Japan, Masaaki Suzuki, Hana Blazikova, soprano, Robin Blaze, counter-tenor, Gerd Turk, tenor, Peter kooij, bass The three cantatas on this recording come from the first half of the 1730’s, by which time J.S. Bach was no longer writing a new cantata every week. In these later works, Bach’s affinity for instrumental colour is coming more clearly to the fore, as are elements of the new ‘emfindersamer Stil’ with its tendency towards expressive melodies rich syncopations and suspensions, and towards homophonic writing. The three cantatas are also linked in that they are all choral cantatas, harking 675754044602 back to Bach’s second year in Leipzig (1724-25), when the cantatas that he wrote were each based in their entirety on a well-known hymn. The opening cantata, In allen meinen Taten BMV 97, is a setting of nine strophes from a poem by Paul Fleming, one of the great German baroque poets, and begins with a splendid French overture, in which the orchestra intones a solemn, slow introduction with the typical dotted rhythms, followed by a lively fugal section during which the choir makes its entry. This is followed by BWV 177, Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, which at is centre has the aria Verleih, dass ich aus Herzengrund… a heartfelt prayer from the soprano and oboe da caccia for the capacity to forgive one’s enemies. The hymn Es ist das Heil uns kommen her, on which the closing BMV 9 is based, remains an important hymn in the German Evangelical Church. The text- and Bach’s setting of it – eloquently conveys the message that it is through faith rather than deeds that mankind may achieve salvation.

SEE ATTACHED ARTICLE ON FINALE INSTALMENTS VOL 54 &55 ON PAGE 32 BIS SACD 1994 Label Code 419 Price Code P PROKOFIEV – SYMPHONY NO.6 Sergei Prokofiev: Symphony no.6 in E flat Minor Op. 111 Lieutenant Kije, Suite symphonique Op. 60 The Love for Three Oranges, Symphonic Suite, Op. 33b ARTISTS: Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Andrew Litton, Andrei Bondarenko Baritone Premièred in January 1945, Sergei Prokofiev’s optimistic and heroic Fifth Symphony had seemed to herald the victorious end of World War Two. In stark contrast to this, his Symphony No.6, which received its first performance in 1947, is one of his deepest and most personal works. Although it was greeted with enthusiasm by the audience, the Soviet authorities were critical of the work and in 1948 a Party resolution singled it out as ‘abnormal’ and ‘repellent’. In fact, the first ideas for the symphony 675754044107 preceded those for the Fifth, and date from a period when the issue of the war was still uncertain. Early in 1945 the composer had suffered a collapse, from which he never completely recovered and which forced him to live the life of an invalid with almost constant headaches. In regard to the work, Prokofiev himself stated: ‘Now we are rejoicing in our great victory, but each of us has wounds that cannot be healed.’ This haunted symphony is here coupled with two works which illustrate a very different side of the composer, his gift for creating vivid musical images that can sum up a scene in a few bold strokes. These are the ever-popular suites from The Love for Three Oranges, the tragic-comical opera from 1921, and from the film score to Lieutenant Kijé, a light-hearted satire from 1934. The original film score included two songs, which form the second and fourth movements of the concert suite. Often performed in a version for solo saxophone and orchestra, these are heard in this recording in their original vocal form, performed by the Ukranian baritone Andrei Bondarenko. With acclaimed previous recordings of music by Prokofiev, as well as by Stravinsky and Rachmaninov, Andrew Litton and his Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra are a tried-and-tested team in this repertoire, and once again make the most of the enormous palette of colours and moods provided by these three scores.

BIS SACD 1996 Label Code 419 Price Code P SIBELIUS – SYMPHONIES NOS 1 & 4 Jean Sibelius: Symphony No.1 in E minor Op. 39 Symphony No.4 in A minor Op. 63 ARTISTS: Minnesota Orchestra, Osmo Vanska Of all of Jean Sibelius’ seven symphonies, the two recorded here are those that reveal the furthermost poles of his symphonic art; the one an essay in the received tradition, the other a work so original and inward-looking as to open up an entirely new world. Composed right around the turn of the previous century, the First Symphony may be described as a pivotal work in Sibelius’s career, in that he here took a decisive step away from the Wagnerian world that had occupied him so much in the 1890s, casting a personal vote of confidence in absolute music, and in the symphonic tradition. 675754044145 On the basis of a particular tunefulness, among other aspects, the First is often said to be the most Tchaikovskian of Sibelius’s symphonies. In contrast, the Fourth Symphony is extremely concise and highly concentrated both in terms of its musical material and the way Sibelius uses the orchestral forces – the scoring is in fact often compared to chamber music. Sibelius was well aware that his new symphony opened up an entirely foreign world, and said ‘there is absolutely nothing of the circus about it’. The initial reaction among critics and audiences was one of incomprehension and the work was denounced as ‘ultra-modern’ and even ‘cubist’. The present recording of these two works, by the Minnesota Orchestra and its music director Osmo Vänskä, follows on the same team’s disc with the Second and Fifth symphonies, hailed at its release as ‘a fine start to what may be the benchmark cycle for the 21st century’ by Gramophone, and nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance.

BIS SACD 2010 Label Code 419 Price Code P SCHUMANN – ETUDES SYMPHONQUES Robert Schumann: Études symphoniques (Études en forme de variations), Op.13 (1837/1852/posth.); Fantasiestücke, Op.12 (Heft I & II); Blumenstück, Op.19 ARTISTS: Freddy Kempf, piano With a flourishing international concert career and an acclaimed discography, Freddy Kempf has become firmly established among the top pianists of today – a process which to an extent began with his participation in the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1998, but also with his recording début the following year. His very first disc, at the age of 22, was a Schumann recital that made reviewers around the world sit up and take notice: ‘Buy this disc, and get in on the ground floor of a major 675754044619 pianistic career’, was the prophetic recommendation on web site ClassicsToday.com. Twelve highly praised recordings later, with programmes ranging from partitas by Bach over Chopin, Mussorgsky and Prokofiev to Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Kempf now returns to Schumann, and to three works composed between 1834 and 1839. The disc opens with the Op.12 Fantasiestücke – a collection of eight pieces intended to be played in sequence and with enough echoes of traditional dance forms to create the impression of a suite. Less often heard in concert nowadays is Blumenstück from 1839, a self-contained piece which Schumann the following year presented as a bridal gift to Clara Wieck. Closing the disc is one of Schumann’s most imposing works for solo piano, the Symphonic Études, Op.13. The work had a long and complicated genesis: conceiving it in 1834 as a set of variations, Schumann completely reworked it and published a first version in 1837. In 1852 he returned to the work, however, bringing out a revised version which omitted the third and ninth movements, and in which the last movement had been shortened. After Schumann’s death, finally, Brahms edited five variations which the composer had left out when first publishing the work. On the present disc, Freddy Kempf plays the 1852 version, with the additional five variations published by Brahms, and the third and ninth études from the 1837 edition. CLASSICAL CD NEW RELEASES

Op. 26b Anders Emilsson: Salute the band for wind ensemble & percussion Astor Piazzolla, arr. Teho Escualo for alto saxophone & band ARTISTS: Swedish Wind Ensemble, Christian Lindeberg, Claude Delangle, saxophone 675754044114

Chronologically, this programme of music for wind ensemble is framed by Darius Milhaud’s La création du monde, a ballet score from 1923, and the composer Anders Emilsson’s Salute the band, commissioned for the 2006 centenary of the Swedish Wind Ensemble. The remaining four compositions are all concertante works, featuring the French saxophone virtuoso Claude Delangle. The disc opens with Catch Me If You Can, based on a film score by John Williams, inspired by the progressive jazz movement of the 1960s. Jazz was an important source of inspiration for Milhaud as well, but in the case of La création – a retelling of an African creational myth – it was the kind of jazz that he heard in Harlem during a visit to New York in the early 1920’s. Also included on the disc is a substantial concerto composed in 1941 by Williams’ fellow-American Paul Creston, and a Divertimento by the French composer Roger Boutry, who re-orchestrated his 1961 original – scored for strings – for the purpose of this recording. The disc closes with an arrangement of Ástor Piazzolla’s Escualo, a celebration in music of the composer’s favourite hobby, shark fishing. A most varied programme, thus, performed by ‘the mellowest, most subtle, liquid, and dreamy saxophonist I’ve ever heard’ according to a reviewer in American Record Guide, and the thirty-odd members of Sweden’s foremost wind ensemble, conducted by Christian Lindberg

All but forgotten (with notable exceptions such as Canto Siboney or Malagueña), these pieces exuded a charm and vitality which, combined with the highly idiomatic interpretations, enchanted audiences and critics alike and brought the disc onto Time Magazine’s list of the 10 best discs of the year. First impressions were confirmed by the following discs, which also gave further proof of the painstaking editorial care taken by Tirino himself in his efforts to discover the composer’s original thoughts beneath the encrustations of later arrangements. Fifty years after the death of Lecuona – often described as ‘the Cuban Gershwin’ – this box set provides a timely opportunity for a new generation to discover the qualities that made him a legend in his own time. For this purpose, Thomas Tirino’s five-disc series is complemented by soprano Carole Farley’s selection of some of her favourite Lecuona songs, including Always in My Heart (Siempre en mi corazón) and La comparsa – an album originally released in 2003, and described as ‘a real gem of a disc!’ in Gramophone, where it was named an ‘Editor’s Choice’.

BIS 1957 Label Code 001 Price Code P C.P.E BACH – KEYBOARD CONCERTOS, VOL 19. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: Concerto in G major, Wq 43/5 (H 475); Concerto in C major, Wq 43/6 (H 476); Concerto in G major, Wq 44 (H 477); Concerto in D major, Wq 45 (H 478) ARTISTS: Miklos Spanyi, Harpsichord/fortepiano, Concerto Armonico Budapest, Marta Abraham On the penultimate disc in his series of the complete keyboard concertos by C.P.E. Bach, Miklós Spányi completes the set of six concertos (Sei Concerti, Wq 43/1-6) begun on Volume 17. Bach finished working on the set in 1771, but had already advertised its coming publication. In a bid to reach as many potential subscribers as possible, he marketed the works as ‘easy’, and also included optional parts for wind instruments: two horns in all the fast movements, replaced by flutes in the 675754044596 slow movements. Bach’s aim was to make the works appealing to both players and listeners, and the result is a set of highly attractive pieces, with approachable melodies and dance rhythms but also displaying a new freedom with regard to conventional concerto form. With the expert support of the Hungarian period band Concerto Armonico, Miklós Spányi performs the solo parts of Wq 43/5 and 43/6 on a harpsichord, a copy of an instrument from 1745. Inspired by the English harpsichords that were imported in great number to Northern Germany during Bach’s time, this instrument has been fitted with a so-called ‘swell device’, enabling the performer to achieve dynamic shadings and crescendodiminuendo effects consistent with the instructions in Bach’s scores. Some seven years after the Sei Concerti, Bach composed the concertos in G major (Wq 44) and D major (Wq 45) – two works which, although composed in the same year, are strikingly different in character, evidence of Bach’s continuing desire to give each new work a distinctive identity. This has led Miklós Spányi to choose to perform the Wq 44 concerto on a fortepiano from 1798, by the English maker Broadwood, returning to the harpsichord for the final work on the disc.

The seventh and penultimate disc in London Baroque’s highly acclaimed survey of the genre through the two centuries lets us sample these later developments in Italy, the nation where the genre had evolved some 100 years earlier. We do so through works by composers who are well-known (Vivaldi), unknown (Bonporti), known for the wrong reasons (Albinoni never composed the famous – or infamous – Adagio) and ignored by mistake (the trio sonata that inspired Stravinsky to compose Pulcinella was by Domenico Gallo and not by Pergolesi, as was long believed). Among our Italians are Locatelli and Tartini, two of the great violinist-composers of the period, as well as a trio largely active in musical centres outside of Italy: Bononcini, Sammartini and Porpora, who taught the young Haydn in Vienna in the 1750’s. Together their compositions come to form a mosaic, where proud traditions from Corelli and earlier (as seen in Vivaldi’s Folia and Albinoni’s dance suite) are gradually superseded by rococo traits.

Leonhard Lechner has until now been rather ignored on recorded releases; he is only known as the composer of secular German lied movements or his rather academic "German Proverbs of Life and Death". His origins are largely unknown; he was probably a pupil of Orlando di Lasso and he was primarily active in Nuremberg and Stuttgart. The present CD intends to present Lechner in a new light, with the ensemble officium introducing, mostly as premiere recordings, festive music for ceremonial occasions scored for large ensembles.

CHRISTOPHORUS 77371 Label Code 034 Price Code F CELEBRATION MUSIC FOR THE MARRIAGE OF PRINCE ELECTOR FREDERICK V TO ELIZABETH STUART CIARLATANI ARTISTS: I CIARLATANI When the Palatinate Prince-Elector Friedrich V married the English Princess Elizabeth Stuart on Valentine's Day 1613, the whole world spoke of the "marriage between the Rhine and the Thames". The Calvinist Electoral Palatinate led the union of the Protestant German princes at this time, and the Palatinate politicians saw in Anglican England a powerful ally against the Catholic Habsburgs. Thus this marriage was, of course, – as was usual at that time – politically motivated; but there is considerable evidence that the two young people were actually fond of each other. In London, the wedding – the Electoral Palatinate had already arrived – had to at first be postponed due to the state mourning of the sudden death of the brother of the bride and of the English heir to the throne, but it could then take place on 14 February 1613 following hasty preparations. After the arrival of the newlyweds in the Electoral Palatinate, the festivities were resumed at Heidelberg Castle. The Ensemble I Ciarlatani has reconstructed the many musical highlights with the help of an historical report, and presents the "marriage between the Rhine and the Thames" in the form of an exciting musical story enabling us to witness the events of those times.

Sonata for piano and violoncello in B major op. 45 Sonata for piano and violoncello in D major op. 58 Variations concertantes op. 17 Song without words op. 109 ARTISTS: Ferenc Vizi, Laura Buruiana. The cellist Laura Buruiana and the pianist Ferenc Vici play the Mendelssohn's complete works for violoncello and piano. What all the works recorded here have in common is the high demands placed on both instrumentalists – as a pianist, Mendelssohn naturally did not regard them as solo works with piano accompaniment but duos with two equal partners. That involves special aspects in 675754044305 the interpretation and the ensemble playing which for Laura Buruiana, the cellist on this recording, are much more important than the virtuosic passages: “The biggest challenge is the sound quality and the ability to create that perfect mixture between the ways of vibrato, the sound colours, the different nuances.” This is not made any easier by the fact that in the four works dating from 1829 to 1845, all phases of Mendelssohn’s creative output – except for his early years – are represented, thus expressing all the stylistic facets of his musical activity.

Given his absence in recent years from the studios, it is a pleasure to announce a new recording from that dexterous musical intelligence that is José Miguel Moreno; and so soon too after his album devoted to the music of David Kellner. Again we are in unknown territory – German and Bohemian lute music from around the start of the 18th 675754044503 century – and again with Moreno as a trusty guide playing his self-built 11- course Baroque lute. 1724 marked the date of publication in Frankfurt an der Oder of the Neue Lauten Stücke by one Johann Gottfried Conradi, possibly a scion of a notable German family of composers of the time. 1721 saw the death of the aristocratic Jan Antonín Losy, a Bohemian lutenist greatly admired by his contemporaries (including by that towering figure of the instrument, Silvius Leopold Weiss, who dedicated to Losy a heartfelt Tombeau). The surviving output of both these barely-known figures of the Baroque solo lute music tradition is small but José Miguel Moreno presents three exemplary suites full of improvisatory preludes and characterful dance movements (Courantes, Gigues, Sarabandes, Minuets...), allowing him both to demonstrate how Conradi and Losy had absorbed influences coming from France and Italy but also to evoke the interior rhetoric of the music of these composers in Moreno’s inimitable exuberant style.

GLOSSA 920414 Label Code 119 Price Code F FRANCOIS COUPERIN: PIECES DE VIOLES ARTISTS: Paolo Pandolfo, Amelie Chemin, Thomas Boysen, Markus Hunninger The confidential, almost secretive, musical world of François Couperin is known through the innumerable emotional connections made in his harpsichord works, but he was also able to produce the same sensations when writing for the viola da gamba. Paolo Pandolfo has brought together on one new album on GLOSSA these works of Couperin’s full maturity, demonstrating the composer’s spiritual and mischievous tendencies in equal measure (as well as his own mastery of the subtleties of the gamba). As well as the Plainte from the Tenth Concert Royal, there are two full Concerts from the collection entitled Les Goûts Réunis which ask for two violas da gamba. These are included alongside what may have been Couperin’s final works, the two sets of the Pièces de violes which, being supplied with a figured bass, call upon for the involvement of other instruments such as theorbo and harpsichord. Considered by the booklet 675754044497 essay writer, Philippem Beaussant, to be ranked as one of Couperin’s masterpieces, the second Suite (which lay undiscovered for almost 250 years) contains an astonishing pair of pieces called Pompe funèbre (Couperin’s musical testament?) and La Chemise blanche. Paolo Pandolfo is joined in this recording – made in the French village of Rasteau – by a second gamba player in Amélie Chemin, as well as by frequent collaborators from recent years in Thomas Boysen (theorbo, Baroque guitar) and Markus Hünninger (harpsichord).

NEW PAN 10282 (2 CD SET) Label Code 250 Price Code F F.A. PISTOCCHI: IL MARTIRIO DI SAN ADRIANO ORATORIO MODENA 1692 ARTISTS: Compagnia de Musici/Francesco Baroni

During his lifetime, Francesco Antonio Pistocchi (16591726) was, as an alto castrato, a renowned singer who occasionally composed roles for himself in works of his own. This must have been the case in this oratorio about the martyrdom of Saint Hadrian: the role of Hadrian is sung by an alto. As rich in effects as it is in atmosphere, this oratorio appears to have been thoroughly successful in its time. In addition to Pistocchi's home city of Parma, his work also received contemporary performances in Venice and in Germany. In terms of content, the oratorio refers to the legend of Saint Hadrian: as a captain in the Roman army, Adriano is forced to persecute Christians. Their steadfastness converts him, however, leading him to his own martyrdom. Standing by 675754044435 him is his wife Natalia, who had already converted to Christianity, whilst his good friend Claudio, on behalf of the Emperor Massimiano, tries to dissuade him from his new faith. Adriano is tortured and finally dies the death of a martyr.

As part of the celebration of Britten's Centenery in 2013, this new recording presents Britten's five Canticles, performed by tenor Ben Johnson with James Baillieu accompanying. Ben Johnson describes his attraction to these works in his self-penned notes for the disc: "Each is deep with meaning or subversion, a trademark of Britten’s music to a modern audience. In their very performance they glide through such variety of style that it makes them wonderfully difficult to categorise. They are song, opera, cantata and chamber music, and so they 635212031728 correspond with the most delicate of intimacy and to the most effective of grand gesture … In his biography of Britten, Humphrey Carpenter points out the close links between the Canticles and Britten’s operas. This answers in part their difference from the ‘usual’ song repertoire: their religious flavour (a stronger taste in some than others) mixed with the circumstances of their composition make for a unique strand in Britten’s output." The St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra under Yuri Temirkanov bring their natural insight with this repertoire to the fore in these live performances, continuing their series of acclaimed releases with Signum: “Yuri Temirkanov’s mature and considered performance wears its own character with pride, rather than complying with any, perfectionist norm. The instrument he wrote for with the second greatest frequency is the bassoon (!), for 099925412425 which he created about forty concertos. Two of the most celebrated bookend Václav Vonášek’s debut recording and are supplemented by pieces by other 18th-century masters, J. S. Bach, C. P. E. Bach and G. F. Handel. Vonášek has primarily arranged for the bassoon compositions intended for the flute, as was customary in the Baroque period. They demonstrate the soloist’s exceptional qualities, for which he has garnered a number of accolades – first prizes at the International Double Reed Society competition (Melbourne, 2004) and the Prague Spring international competition (2009), third prize at the ARD Competition in Munich (2008). Václav Vonášek, accompanied by the distinguished young ensemble Barocco sempre giovane, makes the bassoon sing, unleashes a tempest and conjures up the dreamy atmosphere of the night...

The Final Chapter Masaaki Suzuki and the Bach Collegium Japan finish the last recording in their series of

J.S. Bach’s Sacred Cantatas On Friday 22 February at the Shoin Chapel in Kobe, Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan finished recording the final disc in their monumental series of Bach’s church cantatas. The disc, to be released late autumn this year, is the 55th volume in an undertaking that began in 1995 with the recording of three of Bach’s very first cantatas: BWV 4, 150 and 196. In his own introduction to the series, Masaaki Suzuki expressed the hope that the project would ‘demonstrate that Bach’s music contains a message which can touch the human heart, regardless of nationality or cultural tradition, satisfying hungry spirits and spreading peace.’ As the present recording, which includes the last extant work by Bach in this genre, Lobe den Herrn, meine Seele BWV 69, comes to an end, it seems clear that Suzuki’s hope has been fulfilled. Over the years new instalments in the series have met with international acclaim, and Masaaki Suzuki and his team have earned the respect of reviewers and experts through the excellence of their performances, demonstrating a rare understanding of the context --- both musical and theological --- of these compositions, and through an approach described by one reviewer as ‘seeking devotional depth rather than brilliance for its own sake.’ (International Record Review) Besides the choir and orchestra of Bach Collegium Japan, many of whose members have been part of the project since the beginning, the performers in this final recording included the soloists Hana Blažíková (soprano), Robin Blaze (counter-tenor), Gerd Türk (tenor) and Peter Kooij (bass), wellknown to followers of the BCJ cantata series. Robert von Bahr, president of BIS Records and the recording producer behind the very first volume of cantatas, had also travelled to Japan in order to assist at the closing chapter of an almost two-decade long saga. Apart from the many cantata discs, Masaaki Suzuki and the Bach Collegium Japan have also recorded other works for BIS, by Bach and other composers, and the collaboration will continue with further Bach projects, such as secular cantatas, masses and concertos, but also with an eye to later repertoire.
