Car submerged by rising tide at Karioitahi

PUZZLE CHALLENGE

A couple of weeks ago two vehicles were impounded from the beach for doing donuts, and the drivers have to appear in court. In fact one driver was disqualified so is also being charged with driving whilst disqualified. Further to this on another occasion a vehicle was doing donuts, the out of town driver thought it was great fun, until his vehicle got stuck on an incoming tide. Sorry, can’t and won’t help you; car ended up getting submerged and obviously totally ruined due to the salt water. And he wasn’t insured! This is an incredibly sad story, if you are the sympathetic type. I’m not so found it quite humorous; Karma is a word that comes to mind. A 17 year old female was spoken to about two burglaries that occurred on Kitchener Road and Hamilton Drive. She will appear in court shortly for these two offences. Since the end of October she has plead guilty to five other charges relating to burglaries or breaking into cars. Thankfully she has left Waiuku, but unfortunately she still

Obviously at this time of the year there will be a few work parties, end of year functions and an increase in social gatherings. Hopefully everyone will see these as an opportunity to have fun, but a few pointers can go a long way to making the event a success: • Get a Sober driver. We don’t want needless accidents or deaths because someone thought they would try to beat the odds. It’s not about getting caught; it’s about safety of yourself and other road users. • Think of the hassles and end result if the function turns into a disaster. • Ensure there is enough food and non alcoholic drinks throughout the function. • Invite the numbers that you know you can handle. These facebook generic in-

vites are often a disaster. • Have a couple of sober people willing to act as minders and help those people that are having too much to drink before they get out of hand. Consider how you or your friends are going to get home. • As the host, it may well be that you have to take it easy, to ensure everything is running smoothly. You may need to take a mature approach to the function. • Let the neighbours know about the function, getting their co operation from the start can avoid unnecessary aggro. • Let the Police know, so we can offer specific advice and some visits early on in the night. Its not about enforcement, it’s about ensuring that everyone enjoys themselves without some idiots spoiling it for everyone else.

stressful time of the year, and people are rushing around, but we still need to realise to drive safely and again, like the functions mentioned below, think about the hassles if it all goes bad. Waiuku Police would like to know of any information about a distinctive t shirt. It has the figure of a hand on it, with writing on the fingers. If anyone knows anyone with this type of T shirt, can you please contact us here at the Police station. Remember that there is a total liquor ban in the Waiuku business area, all parks, the beach, Massey Park, and most recreational areas around Waiuku including Waitangi Falls and the grassed area down by the fire station. No alcohol at all, it is an arrestable offence, so do not have alcohol on you.

has family links to this area so may end up coming back. Please remember the usual when it comes to protecting your property: • Look at your locks, window fasteners and deadbolts. • Improve the security around your sheds and garages. Often these are the most ignored buildings, but most often broken into. • Install a couple of sensor lights. • Get to know your neighbours. • Ensure that all your property is named, engraved, is identifiable, is photographed and a list is kept of serial numbers, makes and models. • Lastly, sharpen your dog’s teeth! We have given out a few tickets for people not wearing seat belts, failing to stop at intersections, or exceeding 4km above the speed limit. I appreciate that it is a

Waiuku Policing report from Sergeant Simon Palmer

Karioitahi is a 24 hour, seven day a week liquor ban area. Do not drink down there. Remember the 20km an hour speed limit as well. Remember that the phone number for Crimestoppers is 0800 555 111 or www. crimestoppers-nz.org. Use this if you want your information to be anonymous. We have been getting some very good information coming through and we do respond to them, and do further investigations. But just remember it can be used for anything you want to pass on. We are especially looking for information on people that receive stolen goods, or where stolen goods are being hidden. That’s all for this week, once again from the team here in Waiuku: Lorraine, Laura, Greg, Toby and Rod, thanks for all your help, we rely on your information to make our job easier, and Waiuku a safer place to live, play and work in.

As another Christmas approaches I would like, on behalf of Antonia and our family, to extend warmest greetings to each and every one of my constituents. I wish you all the best for the holiday season and for the coming year. This Christmas is an optimistic one. After the setbacks to our country caused by the world economic downturn and the Christchurch earthquakes, there are positive signs of the economic recovery that has been a priority for the National Government. A strengthening and more confident business sector is vital to provide the employment necessary for people to provide for themselves and their families and to contribute toward a better standard of living for all. At the same time, the government has always been mindful to ensure that the most vulnerable in our society continue to be protected. As always at this time of the year, I would like to thank the army of volunteers who make a huge difference in our local communities, quietly working and serving, as well as our fire, ambulance and police personnel who are so dedicated to helping to keep our communities safe. A special thanks too, to the Steelers, whose magnificent efforts have given us all the early Christmas present of both a Shield and a tremendous lift to the collective spirit! Best wishes to you all. The Hunua Electorate Office will close for the holiday break at midday Tuesday December 24 and reopens at 8.30am Monday January 13.
