Coaching Staff T. Logan Fleck

Head Coach - Fourth Season Old Dominion ‘84

T. Logan Fleck begins his fourth season as Stetson’s men’s soccer coach. In 2009 he led the Hatters to the second Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Championship in the program’s history and second-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament. Stetson finished the regular season with 12 wins and then picked up post-season victories over ETSU and Mercer, before falling to USF in the NCAA Playoffs. The final season record was 14-4-2 giving Coach Fleck the program record for the most wins in a season. His record of 33-16-6 gives him the best three-year record of any coach in Stetson men’s soccer history. Four members of the 2009 team earned First Team All-Conference honors including senior Robert Hodge who was named the A-Sun’s Defensive Player of the Year. One player, Jonathan Mendoza was voted to the All-Freshman Team.

Fleck has an eye for talent. He was instrumental in the signing of several standout players on the men’s side, including Major League Soccer star Mark Chung of the San Jose Earthquakes. He retired after the 2006 season after playing in 278 league matches, one of the highest totals in MLS history. Chung, who has made four MLS AllStar appearances as a member of four different teams (Kansas City, New York/New Jersey and Colorado), played under Fleck’s tutelage from 1989 through 1992. Another standout was U.S. National Team member Jeff Cunningham of the MLS FC Dallas. He was the MLS scoring champion in 2006 and won the Golden Boot Award with 16 goals and 11 assists. One of his top women’s players at USF Siri Norby is a member of the Norwegian National Team and played in the 2008 Olympic Games in China. Other Fleck recruits include MLS-drafted players Todd Deneault and USF’s all-time single-season goal-scoring leader Mike Mekelburg. Both were drafted in the 1997 MLS college draft. The Tampa Bay Mutiny selected Mekelburg in the first round while the Columbus Crew selected Deneault in the third round.

Fleck’s first coaching job was at Seminole High School in Seminole, In 2008 Fleck led the Hatters to their second consecutive winning Fla., where he was the head boy’s soccer coach. He also coached season and second trip to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament boy’s soccer at Lyman High School in Orlando, Fla. Fleck was an assistant at Florida Southern College in 1985 under his guidance. Two members of his team and 1986, prior to accepting a position at earned All-Conference honors, and two players the University of Arkansas-Little Rock where were voted to the All-Freshman Team. As his program grew, Fleck was honored as the Conference USA Coach of the Year in 1998. That team blazed through the regular schedule unblemished and finished with a remarkable 15-1-3 overall record. Twenty-two of Fleck’s Bulls earned All-Conference USA honors between 1996-2004. USF placed seven players on all-conference teams in 1998, including first team selections Kristine Edner, Tia Opliger and Janeen Sobush. The burgeoning program produced its first C-USA individual award winner in 1998 when Tia Opliger was named C-USA Freshman of the Year. Fleck was rewarded as well as his league peers selected him C-USA Coach of the Year. His 2003 team continued to receive conference honors. Breck Bankester not only was named the C-USA Co-Defensive Player of the Year, but also was named to the all-tournament team and to the All-Conference USA First Team. In addition, Katie Reed was named first team all-conference, and Stacci Sastre received third team honors. Fleck’s soccer success at USF actually began in 1989 when he joined then-head men’s soccer coach Jay Miller’s staff as an assistant. The Bulls churned out a 59-28-11 record under five seasons of Miller-Fleck leadership. USF claimed a Sun Belt Conference regular-season title in 1990 and a Metro Conference title in 1991. Fleck assumed head coaching duties with the men’s program following the 1993 season and turned in solid 9-7-0 and 8-6-0 seasons in 1994 and 1995, respectively. The 1996 season marked USF’s return to national prominence in men’s soccer when Fleck’s 1996 team advanced to the NCAA Tournament after a 13-year absence. The team won a share of the C-USA regular-season title, laid claim to the conference tournament title and set a new program record for wins in a season with a 17-4-0 mark. Fleck’s squad spent much of the season nationally ranked and rose as high as No. 10 in the Soccer News poll.

Fleck’s career began as a young boy who watched his father, Dr. Thomas Fleck, coach collegiate games at Lehigh University. Dr. Fleck has been a soccer coach for decades at both the high school and collegiate level, and even coached against his son (Dr. Fleck won). His father has especially made an impact in youth soccer, winning the NSCAA Youth Long-Term Service Award in 1996 for his achievements. In addition to that award, he also earned the following honors: Torch Bearer (Boise, Idaho) 2002 Winter Olympic Games Torch Relay, Eastern Pennsylvania Soccer Hall of Fame, NSCAA Exceptional Services Award and the Order of AHEPA Outstanding Service Award. Dr. Fleck has been a cornerstone i n h i s s o n ’s l i f e . He provided the inspiration for his son to become a coach by his passion, love and enjoyment for the game of soccer.

Coaching Staff Eric Dutt

Assistant Coach - Second Season University of Richmond ‘04

Eric Dutt begins his third season as the Stetson assistant coach. In 2009 he played a key role in leading the Hatters to an Atlantic Sun Conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Prior to coming to Stetson he spent two years in Fredericksburg, Virginia where he served as the Technical Director for the F.C. Fredericksburg Gunners. The USL youth club, under his leadership, qualified 4 teams to the Super Y League National Championships. He also served on the State ODP Staff for the Virginia Youth Soccer Association and served as the coach of the 1992 Boys team. Dutt, originally from Melbourne, Florida, graduated from the University of Richmond in 2004. He started 55 of the 73 games he played in over his four year career and scored four goals and had nine assists for a total of 17 points. He led the Spiders to the Atlantic 10 regular season title in 2003. After graduation, he earned his Masters of Science degree in Sports Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2005. During his time at VCU, Dutt served as the Graduate Assistant for the men’s soccer program that won the CAA regular season and tournament championships, advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals and finished the season ranked #7 by the NSCAA. Dutt returned to the playing field in 2006 and signed a professional contract with the Richmond Kickers of the United Soccer Leagues. During that season, the Kickers won both the Regular Season and League Championships. Dutt recorded his first career point with an assist in a 5-1 win over the Western Mass Pioneers. Dutt earned his USSF “A” License in January of 2008 and his NSCAA National Goalkeeping License in January 2006.

2010 Men’s Soccer Outlook It is a new season and the defending Atlantic Sun Conference champions refuse to rest on their laurels; they want more. Last season Stetson won the league championship tournament and earned its second-ever berth in the NCAA tournament. Simply getting to the first round and playing USF was not enough to satisfy the Hatters. This year they want more. “Last season in the A-Sun we finished second in the regular season and then won the tournament on the road”, said Stetson head coach T. Logan Fleck. “This season we want to win the regular season so we can host the tournament for our fans, win the conference championship, and then continue on the NCAA tournament, get to the Final Four, and win it.” “The goal for any team that takes itself serious [or not] is to get to the Final Four and win it. So those are our three goals and that is what we are going after”, he added. Although the Hatters lost some key seniors to graduation after last season including the league’s scoring champion and the A-Sun Defensive Player of the year, they have added some quality talent with tremendous potential.

Goalkeepers One of the most impressive newcomers will be challenging juniors Logan Potter (Merritt Island, Fla.) and Dan Billman (Troy, Mo.) for the starting role between the pipes. For a young player freshman Andreas Schnabl (Blaichach, Germany) has solid command of the goal area, quickness and the ability to cut off angles. He has the ability to step right in and play at the collegiate level. Potter started all 20 games for the Hatters last season and was one of the top keepers in the conference. He made 96 saves, delivered six shutouts and finished with a 1.39 goals against average. Unfortunately he sustained an injury over the semester break, was not available for the spring season, and continues his rehabilitation. Billman, who has been waiting for his opportunity

4

STETSON UNIVERSITY

stepped in and played very well in the spring. All three keepers will have an equal opportunity to become the starter in 2010.

Defenders Although last season’s team captain and leader Robert Hodge will certainly be missed, three of Stetson’s starting back four return to defend the team’s honor. Dan Sackman (Hampshire, England), Ryan Corning (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and Matt Hoskins (Marietta, Ga.) are all top-quality defenders who helped lead the team to a league-high six shutouts in 2009. Sackman is a hard-nosed back who leads by example, Corning, a member of the 2009 A-Sun All-Tournament Team makes it difficult for opponents to beat the Hatters on the back post, and Hoskins has the work ethic and heart of a champion. Hoskins returns to the pitch this season after suffering serious life-threatening health issues over the last year. Competing for the fourth position, as well as playing time on the back line will be a pair of returners and a trio of incoming freshmen. Josh Menendez (Tampa, Fla.) and Kevin Ruckle (Miami, Fla.) return as juniors this season. Menendez saw time last season in some crucial games. If his fitness continues to improve he will fight for a bigger role. Ruckle will also be a factor in the competition for time on the field. Raffaele Centofanti (Miami Lakes, Fla.) is a very talented defender who played for the Venezuelan Under 17 National Team. He is a hard tackler who comes forward and serves a very dangerous ball. Chris Aguirre (North Miami Beach, Fla.) is an experienced ODP player who has good composure and technique with the ball. Jonatan Almosninos (Ramat Gan, Israel) is a 22-year old center back who will bring his maturity, tackling ability, and tactical understanding. He is likely to make an immediate impact on the back line. Fellow freshman Carrington Hogan (Clearwater, Fla.) is a hard tackler that can get forward, yet will not play in 2010 due to injury.

Midfielders Stetson returns an experienced and very talented

2010 Men’s Soccer Outlook group of midfielders to the field this season. Leading the way will be the 2010 A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year Fredrik Brustad (Oslo, Norway). Brustad who also plays forward, earned First Team All-Conference and All-Tournament Team honors in 2009. With his accolades and reputation he will have a target on his back. He is expected to perform at crucial times and thus will be covered intensely. The attention he is given should help open up the field for his talented teammates. Juniors Gonzalo de Mujica (Weston, Fla.) and Giulio D’Amore, along with sophomore sensation Jonathan Mendoza (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) are the three top returners to join Brustad at midfield. According to Coach Fleck de Mujica is “poised and ready to shine” the “Mistro of the Midfield” knows how to “pull the strings” and “conduct play” for his fellow players. Fleck is looking for the 2008 All-Freshman team member to be more involved in year three. Senior Giulio D’Amore (Deland, Fla.) is a team leader who did a great job defensively last season and will look to expand his role offensively in 2010. Jonathan Mendoza (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) is another midfielder who will see some time up front as well. Dubbed “Speed Racer” by the scoring table, Mendoza is an ultimate competitor. He does what is necessary for the team rather than seek to achieve his own goals. he was a major part of Stetson’s success last season and received All-Freshman Team honors for his efforts. He was also named to the Preseason All-Conference team this year. In addition there are three more midfielders who could start at most schools and will certainly see their share of playing time in 2010. Junior Ryan Asare-Bediako (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomores Kai Eckenrode (Springfield, Va.) and Luis Ocejo (Mexico City, Mex.) have all played significant roles in the past and will again this year. Asare-Bediako played in 19 games last season and scored a pair of goals including a game-winner. As his touch and speed continue to improve his playing time will increase further. Eckenrode and Ocejo played in 12 and 11 games respectively as

freshmen. They both played in the PDL over the summer which will help with their experience and fitness heading into 2010. The final four midfielders who will compete for time this season are sophomore Caleb Matthews (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.), freshmen Evan Jimmo (Melbourne, Fla.) and AJ Cardounel (Davie, Fla.), and junior Stephan Ledain (Mississagua, Ontario, Canada). Matthews entered the preseason showing definite improvement in fitness level and touch. Jimmo has a very good tactical understanding and as his strength continues to improve will be a great asset with his height. Cardounel is a crafty midfielder who also has solid tactical understanding. Ledain has improved touch and speed and will look to gain more time in the midfield and left back positions.

Forwards Coming into the recruiting season Coach Fleck and Coach Dutt knew they had a challenge ahead trying to replace the offense lost with the graduations of Kevin Munz and Griffin Gilstrap. It seems that their hard work has paid off. Joining returning junior Matt Delisle (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) who will compete for time, are two talented junior transfers. Niels De Jonck (Antwerp, Belgium) will bring his touch, goal scoring ability, and powerful shot to the Stetson attack. Joakim Helland (Bergen, Norway) comes to the Hatters from St. John’s University. He has the ability to hold the ball and bring others into the game with his distribution skills. He will help fill the void left by graduation. Respect for the Stetson soccer program has spread throughout the league, as well as the country. In the A-Sun’s preseason coaches’ poll Stetson was picked to win the regular season and repeat as tournament champions. “It will be harder to win this year than it was last year”, said Fleck. “Once you have won, when you come back it is tougher to win again. “This early on we are an unknown quantity”, he added. “ We are not sure where we are yet but we know where we want to head... Destination Championship!”

Atlantic Sun Conference For more than 30 years the Atlantic Sun Conference has stood for achievement with integrity in both the academic and athletic arenas with a focus on the balance between the two for its student-athletes. The A-Sun boasts a blend of the most dynamic and prestigious private and public institutions in the region, with all committed to the conference goal of Building Winners for Life. BUILDING Continuing a tradition of academic achievement, a record 60 percent of all student-athletes earned All-Academic status during the 2009-10 academic year. Lipscomb edged out Belmont, the seven-time winner of the All-Academic Trophy, to win its first such trophy with close to 72 percent of its the student-athletes achieving All-Academic status with grade point averages of a 3.00, or better. Several Bisons teams received national recognition for their success in the classroom. Both the men’s and women’s track & field teams posted team GPAs among the top five in the nation - the only school in the country to boast that distinction. Jacksonville’s women’s track team received their ninth straight USTFCCCA All-Academic honor. Lipscomb’s women’s basketball team posted the ninth best GPA in the country and the conference champion volleyball team led five A-Sun schools in receiving an AVCA Team Academic Award. The Stetson men’s tennis team led the nation with nine student-athletes earning the honor of Scholar Athlete from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. A total of five A-Sun schools and 24 student-athletes received recogntion from the ITA. Stetson and Belmont joined only 16 other Division I schools considered an All-Academic squad in both men’s and women’s tennis. For the first time the NCAA released single-year APR for Division I head coaches in six sports dating back to 2003-04, the beginning of the program. All 11 A-Sun schools produced a coach who had a year of a perfect score of 1000 and the league produced a total of 25 seasons with scores of 1000. Seven of the conference’s men’s and women’s basketball recorded at least one score of 1000 and five teams had a score of 1000 in 2008-09, the most recent year recorded by the NCAA. WINNERS Four A-Sun teams received Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association All-Sports Trophies in recognition of their performances in NCAA postseason play. Lipscomb’s softball team, ETSU’s men’s tennis squad plus UNF’s men’s golf team and women’s tennis carried the conference to the third-highest total by any one conference. Golf continued to boom in the conference as three league members on the women’s side advanced to NCAA play for the first time in conference play. Women’s golf became the first sport in the conference to produce three NCAA participants since baseball in 2003. At the NCAA Regionals, ETSU’s Nina Muehl opened with an 8-under 64, the single lowest round carded in all of Division I golf and became just the second golfer from the A-Sun to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships

conference’s fourth first-round pick in the last two years. ETSU’s Paul Hoilman contended for the national triple crown and burst onto the national scene by winning the first-ever home run derby competition - contested at historic Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb. Mercer’s Jacob Tanis finished one RBI shy of the national lead in pacing the Bears back to the top of the A-Sun for the first time in more than 25 years. In softball, two hurlers established themselves among the best in the nation. Lipscomb’s Whitney Kiihnl and USC Upstate’s Morgan Childers each topped the 30-win mark - a first for the conference. The two traded the national lead in ERA throughout the season and when the year came to a close, Kiihnl finished with the best mark in the nation with Childers taking a close second. Kiihnl and Childers ranked second and third in the country in fewest hits allowed per seven innings. For the first time in league history, the conference’s last remaining charter member, Mercer, hosted the General Shale Brick Basketball Championships. The hosts advanced to the final of the men’s event setting up a standing-room-only event at the University Center against ETSU. In the end the Buccaneers won back-to-back titles. Jacksonville advanced to the NIT for the straight second year and provided the league’s first win in the event since 1996 when Ben Smith connected on a game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds to stun top-seeded Arizona State. On the women’s side ETSU became the third A-Sun school to win three straight titles, FGCU advanced to the WNIT for a third consecutive year and USC Upstate registered its first 20-win season as a Divisioon I program. FOR LIFE Alums from the Atlantic Sun, both recent and historic continued to excel at the highest levels. Within the span of three days, FGCU produced its first two major league baseball players. Two pitchers of the Eagles’ 2008 A-Sun Championship squad, Casey Coleman and Sale, took their talents to Chicago as Coleman broke in with the Cubs and Sale soared through the White Sox system after spending less than two months in the minors. In late June, former Stetson All-American Chris Johnson returned to the Astros lineup and hit over .380 his first two months as a regular. On the links, former ETSU star Rhys Davies has posted a solid rookie season on the European Tour. In the spring he picked up his first win and added back-to-back runner-up finishes to move into the top 50 in the world for the first time as a professional. One of his second-place showings occurred at the Wales Open where he closed with a record nine-under-par round 62 on the Ryder Cup course at the Celtic Manor. His stellar play placed Davies eighth on ESPN’s “Top 25 Golfers Under 25” list. The conference will have representation at the Ryder Cup as former league individual champion Colin Montgomerie (1985 with former member Houston Baptist) will captain the European team. Montgomerie will be the second conference alum to lead a Ryder Cup squad. Hal Sutton (Centenary) served as captain for the United States in 2004.

The Ospreys’ men’s golf team spent the year ranked among the top programs in the country alongside ETSU. Both advanced to NCAA postseason play and the Ospreys made the nationals for the first time as a conference member. Sophomore Sean Dale earned AllAmerica honors and qualified for the US Amateur, as did his teammates Kevin Alywin and Kevin Phelan. Phelan opened his summer by qualifying for the US Open at Pebble Beach. ETSU’s Rhys Enoch tied for the individual title at the NCAA East Regional and his play carried into summer as he made his second Palmer Cup team and advanced all the way to the quarterfinals of the British Amateur. Individual performances stood out on the diamond as FGCU’s Chris Sale became a consensus All-America en route to becoming the

President and Athletics Staff Dr. Wendy B. Libby

Jeff Altier

University President - Cornell ‘7 ‘72 2

Athletics Ath letics Director - Stetson ‘82

Stetson University entered a new era of leadership in July 2009 when Dr. Wendy B. Libby became the university’s ninth president.

Jeff Altier, a 26-year veteran of the Stetson University athletic department, is in his 14th year as Stetson’s Director of Athletics. During his tenure, Altier has earned a reputation as an outstanding fundraiser and a leader with an eye on the future, and is noted for his active participation in the NCAA governance structure.

Formerly president of Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., the nation’s second-oldest women’s institution, Libby has had a broad career in higher education and private industry. An expert in strategic planning, she plans to build on Stetson’s values-centered heritage and tradition of academic excellence and communityengaged service learning while moving Stetson forward. Prior to her six years at Stephens College, Libby served as vice president for business affairs and chief financial officer at Furman University, Greenville, S.C., from 1995 to 2003. She has 28 years of administrative and teaching experience in higher education, at institutions including Westbrook College (now part of the University of New England), the University of Hartford, the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, The Ohio State University and Cornell University. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Libby earned her doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of Connecticut. Her undergraduate degree, in Biology with a concentration in Genetics, is from Cornell University. She earned an MBA, with a concentration in Finance, from Cornell’s Johnson Graduate School of Management. Libby is a member of numerous higher education organizations. Last fall, she led a delegation of six college presidents in a visit to Ewha University in Seoul, South Korea. In honor of her outstanding leadership, Libby received the 2007 Athena Award from the Columbia (Mo.) Chamber of Commerce Women’s Network for her support of women in realizing their full leadership potential and for contributing to the quality of life in the community. In May, she received the 2009 Outstanding Higher Education Professional Alumni Award at the University of Connecticut. She and her husband, Dr. Richard M. Libby, have two sons, Glenn and wife Ginger, and Gregg and wife Lori, four grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, and three dogs. An avid reader, she enjoys cooking and entertaining.

Altier, captain of the nationally-ranked 1982 Hatter baseball team, earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stetson. Upon wrapping up his Stetson baseball career, he spent two years as a player/coach developing the sport in Perth, Australia. He then returned to Stetson as an assistant coach before being promoted to Ticket Manager, Director of Athletic Promotions, and then Associate Athletic Director. In these rolls, he spearheaded the department’s development efforts as well as oversaw athletic marketing and promotions, concessions and travel coordination. He was named Director of Athletics in 1996. Altier also served as Tournament Manager for the NCAA Division I Southeast First and Second Round Men’s basketball tournament hosted by Stetson in 1993 and 1996 at the Orlando Arena, and as Tournament Director for the 1999 and 2004 tournament. Stetson has taken great strides in the area of gender equity under Altier, increasing scholarships, participation opportunities and staffing for women’s athletics. The unprecedented success of the women’s tennis, golf, soccer, basketball and softball teams in conference competition during Altier’s tenure are evidence of his commitment to women’s athletics. In fact, under his direction Stetson’s women’s and men’s teams have won an impressive 15 conference championships. A hallmark of Altier’s professional career was the building of Stetson’s $4.5 million baseball facility, Melching Field at Conrad Park. Built in conjunction with the City of DeLand, Melching Field is regarded as one of the nation’s premiere college baseball facilities. Altier then turned his attention to construction of an on-campus softball facility, which broke ground in 2002 and was ready for competition in February of 2003. The Patricia Wilson Field has been named Collegiate Softball Field of the Year four times. He was also instrumental in securing new state-of-the-art field lighting for both the softball and soccer fields in 2005. Under his guidance, the Athletic Department has seen the addition of the new Wilson Athletic Center, a $ 1.5 million health and wellness facility for the use of Stetson student-athletes. Altier’s leadership has extended beyond campus, as he has taken on Atlantic Sun Conference leadership roles, chairing many committees and serving as conference vice-president. Additionally, he has served on the National Association of College Directors of Athletics Division IAAA board of directors, the NCAA A.E.C. Cabinet and is currently a member of the prestigious NCAA Leadership Council. Locally he has served as president of the DeLand Rotary Club, vice-president of the DeLand Sports Redevelopment Association, and is a graduate of Leadership DeLand and Leadership Orlando. He is currently a member of the board of directors of the Central Florida Sports Commission. Altier was honored as the West Volusia Sportsperson of the Year for 2004. Altier’s family includes wife, Sarah (Booker) (Stetson B.A. ’82, M.Ed. ’96), and children Heath (Stetson M.B.A. ’09), Brianne, and Garrett.

Seventy-eight percent of Stetson students live on campus.

• Financial Assistance - Academics merit, scholarships, musical talent, athletic grants, need-based grants, loans and work-study, as well as monthly payment plans. • Academic Programs - There are over 60 majors and minors offered within Stetson’s three colleges and schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Music, and the School of Business Administration.

Its spacious 170-acre campus, lined with palm and oak trees, is centrally located between two major Florida cities, Daytona Beach and Orlando. Included in the diverse curriculum are 11 degree programs (five bachelors, six masters and post masters) and more than 60 majors. Stetson ranked second on the list of the South’s top regional universities for academic quality and sixth in the best value category, in U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” for 2007.
