Coaching Staff T. Logan Fleck

Head Coach - Third Season Old Dominion ‘84

T. Logan Fleck begins his third season as Stetson’s men’s soccer coach. In 2008 he led the Hatters to their second consecutive winning season and second trip to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament under his guidance. Two members of his team earned AllConference honors, and two players were voted to the All-Freshman Team. For the second consecutive season Stetson defeated Clemson from the ACC (1-0). In 2007 he assumed the program just prior to the season and led the team to an impressive 11-5-2 record and a second place finish in the A-Sun. The Hatters placed four players on the all-conference team, two players on the all-freshman team and finished first in the league in defense with a 1.00 goals against average. The team’s signature win was the 2-1 triumph over Clemson. Fleck has 179 career victories in 21 years of coaching men’s and women’s soccer. Prior to coming to DeLand he was fixture at the University of South Florida. Fleck served as the head women’s soccer coach, leading the Bulls to a 97-94-18 record. It was a program he brought from a non-scholarship team to a varsity squad that built an 11-3-0 record in his first season. As his program grew, Fleck was honored as the Conference USA Coach of the Year in 1998. That team blazed through the regular schedule unblemished and finished with a remarkable 15-1-3 overall record. Twenty-two of Fleck’s Bulls earned All-Conference USA honors between 1996-2004. USF placed seven players on all-conference teams in 1998, including first team selections Kristine Edner, Tia Opliger and Janeen Sobush. The burgeoning program produced its first C-USA individual award winner in 1998 when Tia Opliger was named C-USA Freshman of the Year. Fleck was rewarded as well as his league peers selected him C-USA Coach of the Year. His 2003 team continued to receive conference honors. Breck Bankester not only was named the C-USA Co-Defensive Player of the Year, but also was named to the all-tournament team and to the All-Conference USA First Team. In addition, Katie Reed was named first team all-conference, and Stacci Sastre received third team honors. Fleck’s soccer success at USF actually began in 1989 when he joined then-head men’s soccer coach Jay Miller’s staff as an assistant. The Bulls churned out a 59-28-11 record under five seasons of Miller-Fleck leadership. USF claimed a Sun Belt Conference regular-season title in 1990 and a Metro Conference title in 1991. Fleck assumed head coaching duties with the men’s program following the 1993 season and turned in solid 9-7-0 and 8-6-0 seasons in 1994 and 1995, respectively. The 1996 season marked USF’s return to national prominence in men’s soccer when Fleck’s 1996 team advanced to the NCAA Tournament after a 13-year absence. The team won a share of the C-USA regular-season title, laid claim to the conference tournament title and set a new program record for wins in a season with a 17-4-0 mark. Fleck’s squad spent much of the season nationally ranked and rose as high as No. 10 in the Soccer News poll.

Eric Dutt

Assistant Coach - Second Season University of Richmond ‘04

Eric Dutt begins his second season as the Stetson assistant coach. Prior to coming to Stetson he spent two years in Fredericksburg, Virginia where he served as the Technical Director for the F.C. Fredericksburg Gunners. The USL youth club, under his leadership, qualified 4 teams to the Super Y League National Championships. He also served on the State ODP Staff for the Virginia Youth Soccer Association and served as the coach of the 1992 Boys team. Dutt, originally from Melbourne, Fla., graduated from the University of Richmond in 2004. He started 55 of the 73 games he played in over his four year career

Fleck has an eye for talent. He was instrumental in the signing of several standout players on the men’s side, including Major League Soccer star Mark Chung of the San Jose Earthquakes. He retired after the 2006 season after playing in 278 league matches, one of the highest totals in MLS history. Chung, who has made four MLS All-Star appearances as a member of four different teams (Kansas City, New York/New Jersey and Colorado), played under Fleck’s tutelage from 1989 through 1992. Another standout was U.S. National Team member Jeff Cunningham of the MLS FC Dallas. He was the MLS scoring champion in 2006 and won the Golden Boot Award with 16 goals and 11 assists. One of his top women’s players at USF Siri Norby is a member of the Norwegian National Team and played in the 2008 Olympic Games in China. Other Fleck recruits include MLS-drafted players Todd Deneault and USF’s alltime single-season goal-scoring leader Mike Mekelburg. Both were drafted in the 1997 MLS college draft. The Tampa Bay Mutiny selected Mekelburg in the first round while the Columbus Crew selected Deneault in the third round. Fleck’s first coaching job was at Seminole High School in Seminole, Fla., where he was the head boy’s soccer coach. He also coached boy’s soccer at Lyman High School in Orlando, Fla. Fleck was an assistant at Fleck’s Career Record in Men’s Soccer Florida Southern College 1987 9-5-2 Arkansas-Little Rock in 1985 and 1986, prior to 1988 8-4-3 Arkansas-Little Rock accepting a position at the 1989 6-5-3 Arkansas-Little Rock University of Arkansas-Little 1994 9-7-0 South Florida Rock where he initiated both 1995 8-6-0 South Florida men’s and women’s soccer 1996 17-4-0 South Florida programs. Fleck’s men were 23-14-8 over three seasons 2007 11-5-2 Stetson and advanced to the Trans 2008 8-7-2 Stetson America Athletic Conference Total 76-43-12 (.626) playoffs all three years. His first women’s team at UALR was regionally ranked as high as ninth. The following season the women qualified for the Central Region playoffs. Fleck holds a United States Soccer Federation National “A” license as well as a Youth National License. He has been an instructor at U.S. Soccer National Coaching Schools and for National Youth Licenses as well. He was the head coach of the United States Youth Soccer Association South Regional teams from 1989-91 and is currently on both coaching staffs for the women’s and men’s South Regional teams. In addition, Fleck is currently a U.S. Soccer Federation National staff coach. Fleck’s career began as a young boy who watched his father, Dr. Thomas Fleck, coach collegiate games at Lehigh University. Dr. Fleck has been a soccer coach for decades at both the high school and collegiate level, and even coached against his son (Dr. Fleck won). His father has especially made an impact in youth soccer, winning the NSCAA Youth Long-Term Service Award in 1996 for his achievements. In addition to that award, he also earned the following honors: Torch Bearer (Boise, Idaho) 2002 Winter Olympic Games Torch Relay, Eastern Pennsylvania Soccer Hall of Fame, NSCAA Exceptional Services Award and the Order of AHEPA Outstanding Service Award. Dr. Fleck has been a cornerstone in his son’s life. He provided the inspiration for his son to become a coach by his passion, love and enjoyment for the game of soccer.

and scored 4 goals and had 9 assists for a total of 17 points. He led the Spiders to the Atlantic 10 regular season title in 2003. After graduation, he earned his Masters of Science degree in Sports Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2005. During his time at VCU, Dutt served as the Graduate Assistant for the men’s soccer program that won the CAA regular season and tournament championships, advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals and finished the season ranked #7 by the NSCAA. Dutt returned to the playing field in 2006 and signed a professional contract with the Richmond Kickers of the United Soccer Leagues. During that season, the Kickers won both the Regular Season and League Championships. Dutt recorded his first career point with an assist in a 5-1 win over the Western Mass Pioneers. Dutt earned his USSF “A” License in January of 2008 and his NSCAA National Goalkeeping License in January 2006.

University and Athletics Staff Dr. Wendy B. Libby

Jeff Altier

University President - Cornell ‘7 ‘72 2

Athletics Ath letics Director - Stetson ‘82

Stetson University entered a new era of leadership in July 2009 when Dr. Wendy B. Libby became the university’s ninth president.

Jeff Altier, a 24-year veteran of the Stetson University athletic department, begins his 13th year as Stetson’s athletic director.

Formerly president of Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., the nation’s second-oldest women’s institution, Libby has had a broad career in higher education and private industry. An expert in strategic planning, she plans to build on Stetson’s values-centered heritage and tradition of academic excellence and community-engaged service learning while moving Stetson forward. Prior to her six years at Stephens College, Libby served as vice president for business affairs and chief financial officer at Furman University, Greenville, S.C., from 1995 to 2003. She has 28 years of administrative and teaching experience in higher education, at institutions including Westbrook College (now part of the University of New England), the University of Hartford, the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, The Ohio State University and Cornell University. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Libby earned her doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of Connecticut. Her undergraduate degree, in Biology with a concentration in Genetics, is from Cornell University. She earned an MBA, with a concentration in Finance, from Cornell’s Johnson Graduate School of Management. Libby is a member of numerous higher education organizations. Last fall, she led a delegation of six college presidents in a visit to Ewha University in Seoul, South Korea. In honor of her outstanding leadership, Libby received the 2007 Athena Award from the Columbia (Mo.) Chamber of Commerce Women’s Network for her support of women in realizing their full leadership potential and for contributing to the quality of life in the community. In May, she received the 2009 Outstanding Higher Education Professional Alumni Award at the University of Connecticut. She and her husband, Dr. Richard M. Libby, have two sons, Glenn and wife Ginger, and Gregg and wife Lori, four grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, and three dogs. An avid reader, she enjoys cooking and entertaining.

During his tenure, Altier has earned a reputation as an outstanding fund raiser and a leader with an eye on the future. Perhaps the crowning achievement of Altier’s professional career was the building of Stetson’s $4.5 million baseball facility, Melching Field at Conrad Park. Built in conjunction with the City of DeLand, Melching Field is regarded as one of the nation’s premiere college baseball facilities. The stadium opened on Feb. 13, 1999. Since completing the Melching Field project, Altier has overseen the construction of new soccer & softball facilities. Stetson has taken great strides in the area of gender equity under Altier. The softball program was elevated to major sport status and by the start of the 2002 season, mirrored baseball in terms of scholarship numbers and staff. Additionally, both the men’s women’s soccer and men’s and women’s tennis programs have seen a growth in scholarships. Under his guidance, the Athletic Department has seen the addition of the new Wilson Athletic Center, a $ 1.5 million health and wellness facility solely for the use of Hatter student-athletes. Prior to his current appointment, Altier served as associate athletic director for four years. He spearheaded the department’s development efforts as well as oversaw athletic marketing and promotions, concessions and travel coordination. Altier also served as tournament manager at the NCAA I Southeast First and Second Round men’s basketball games hosted by Stetson in 1993, 1996 and 2003 at the Orlando Arena. Before his promotion to associate director, Altier was the Hatters’ director of athletic promotions and ticket manager. Altier, captain of the nationally ranked 1982 Hatter baseball team, earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stetson. Upon wrapping up his Stetson baseball career, he spent two years as a player/coach developing the sport in Perth, Australia. He then returned to Stetson as an assistant coach before taking on administrative duties. Altier’s family includes wife, Sarah and children, Heath, Brianne, and Garrett.

This is Stetson University

• Location - The DeLand campus is 35 miles from Orlando and 25 miles from Daytona Beach. • Faculty - 195 full-time, 95% with Ph.D. or equivalent. • Student Population - 59% female/41% male; 78% Florida/25% out-of-state; 3.4% foreign/14% minority. • Student Organizations - More than 100 organizations; student government, service, special interests, 17 scholastic and honorary societies, including Phi Beta Kappa. • Greek Life - The presence of eight (7) national fraternities and six (6) national sororities complements campus-wide activities.

The Faculty ... The Stetson “advantage” is its faculty. They know their fields of study: 95% of faculty members hold Ph.D. or equivalent degrees. More important, all of them teach undergraduates. The low student to faculty ratio, 12:1, means that Stetson’s 195 faculty members have more time for teaching and advising students. They are accessible and involved in their students’ personal development.

• Athletics - Stetson is an NCAA Division I member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. The athletic department sponsors 15 intercollegiate sports, including baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s crew, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and volleyball. The baseball and softball teams won A-Sun championships in 2007.

International Focus ... Through distinctive programs, such as Russian Studies, Latin American Studies, International Relations, the Washington Semester and the International Business Practicum, Stetson prepares students to succeed in the rapidly changing global marketplace. Several times each semester, dignitaries and leading scholars from around the world visit the campus to lecture and meet informally with the students. Former President Jimmy Carter, South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu and holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel have been among the lecturers at Stetson University.

• Admission: The academic criteria include a challenging high school curriculum. A 3.70 was the average GPA of incoming freshmen in 2007. The SAT range of the middle 50 percent of the 2007 entering first-year class was 10301240; the ACT range was 21-27.

Campus Life ... Campus living is important to Stetson students. Sharing experiences, having fun, learning to live in a community and taking responsibility for shaping residence hall life are all a part of the self-discovery process that makes Stetson exciting. Seventyeight percent of Stetson students live on campus.

• Financial Assistance - Academics merit, scholarships, musical talent, athletic grants, need-based grants, loans and work-study, as well as monthly payment plans. • Academic Programs - There are over 60 majors and minors offered within Stetson’s three colleges and schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Music, and the School of Business Administration.

The University ... Stetson University maintains a tradition of academic excellence within a friendly and informal atmosphere. Its spacious 170-acre campus, lined with palm and oak trees, is centrally located between two major Florida cities, Daytona Beach and Orlando. Stetson combines the best of two educational worlds: the variety of a university coupled with the concern for individual development found at a small college. Included in the diverse curriculum are 11 degree programs (five bachelors, six masters and post masters) and more than 60 majors. Stetson ranked second on the list of the South’s top regional universities for academic quality and sixth in the best value category, in U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” for 2007. Stetson is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Academic programs are accredited by the American Bar Association, the National Association of Schools of Music, AACSB International, and the American Chemical Society. The College of Arts and Sciences was awarded the first private university Phi Beta Kappa chapter in Florida.

The Students ... Over 2,000 undergraduates from more than 41 states and 40 foreign countries attend Stetson. Most entering students are at the top 25% of their high school class, and were deeply involved in school and community life. All have successfully completed a college preparatory program.

Academic Program ... The university awards the bachelor’s degree in arts, sciences, education, business administration, music, and music education. Master’s degrees are offered in accounting, business administration, couseling, education, and English. Facilities ... Stetson boasts a charming mix of historical and contemporary buildings. The heart of the campus is included in the Stetson University National Historic District, while the state-of-the-art Lynn Business Center houses the School of Business Administration on the five floors of modern classrooms, seminar rooms and faculty offices. The duPont-Ball Library houses extensive print collections and access to more than 100 subscription electronic databases and 11,000 full-text journals, as well as many computer workstations for student use. The Gillespie Museum of Minerals boasts the largest private collection of minerals outside the Smithsonian Institution. The Edmunds Center, a 4,000-seat athletic facility, provides two full-sized basketball courts, locker rooms and athletic department offices. The Hollis Center and Wilson Athletic Center provide Stetson students and student-athletes alike with excellent health and wellness opportunities.
