These coaches are the best alternative to new transit cars and are available at a fraction of the cost. The stainless steel frame and exterior of the cars have been tested by time to prove their enduring strength and durability. Each coach comfortably seats 136 passengers plus 4 spaces for wheelchairs or bicycles.

Budd Coach Components Bolster Roll Stabilizers and Brake Shoes Bolster roll stabilizers shall be inspected and repaired according to general instructions, with all pins and bushings replaced.

All couplers will be set at 34.5” to 35”, with 34.5” being preferred. New lock-lift assemblies will be installed and all operating rod-eye clearances shall be adjusted.

New car identification numbers and letters will be installed

Exteriors Car Body Decals to Meet Customer’s Request New car identification numbers and letters will be installed. Buyer’s decals and logos will be applied on the sides of the rail car to the agreed upon locations as depicted on the exterior decal layout. Material of decals is sufficient to withstand ambient environmental conditions, railroad environment conditions, continued washing using detergent, and the decals shall not discolor. Decal material is vinyl or other manufacturer recommended application.

Exteriors

All Fluted Areas and Plates Newly Polished All suspect areas have been tested for cracks using dye penetrate, and all seams on the car body roof are sealed with Kool Seal elastomeric coating to prevent any possible water leakage. Eco-friendly cleaning products are used on the car bodies before the entire exterior is hand polished. All windows are removed and replaced with matching tint scratch-resistant polycarbonate glazing and new rubber gaskets. There will be a total of 16 emergency access windows installed on each car. Repaired center plates shall be reinstalled to body bolsters using bolts and deformable lock nuts.

The following Amtrak Standard Mechanical Procedures, in their latest versions, shall be used to determine applicable standards, repairs, and criteria for qualification of existing material and provision of new material: • SMP 46603 – Procedure for Reclaiming Passenger Car Truck Equalizers (use only Canton I Beam instructions) – Revision of January 28, 2010 • SMP 46605 – Reclamation of Truck Crossbars and Swing Hangers - Issue of March 15, 1981 • SMP 46608 – Heavy Truck Overhaul Procedure – Issue of September 2, 1981 • SMP 46617 – Heavy Truck Overhaul Procedure – Revision of June 16, 2006 • SMP 48002 – Repair of Low Carbon Nickel Steel Truck Frames and Bolsters by Welding – Issue of March 15, 1981 • SMP 49602 – Repair and Reinforcement of Equalizer Spring Seats – Revision of February 11, 2004 • Note: SMP 46617 covers non-Amtrak equipment; where there is a conflict between SMP 46608 and SMP 46617, SMP 46617 shall govern. The following overhaul work items shall be included: 1. The trucks shall be dismantled (see Section 2 of SMP 46617) 2. Structural inspection and repair shall be done 3. Bolster roll stabilizers will be inspected and repaired with all pins and bushings replaced 4. Brake shoes will be replaced with new 16 inch Cobra or equal shoes 5. Wheels will be turned to a 1 in 20 taper and wheels with less than 1-1/2 service metal following turning shall be replaced Trucks shall be painted with a single coat of light bodied silver paint of approved type, with the exception of all wheel sets, rubber and composite components, bearing, and rubbing surfaces. 10

The trucks will undergo a complete overhaul conforming to Amtrak Standard Mechanical Procedures governing Heritage privately-owned car trucks.

All brake valves shall be sent to an AAR-certified air brake shop for COT&S. All brake rigging, slack adjusters, heads, and hand brakes shall be inspected, cleaned and rebuilt as needed. 26-C brake schedule without electric overlay will be maintained with relay valves to support composition shoes and present foundation clasp brake. New hoses and connectors will be used in restoration of brake equipment. Miscellaneous Features Bike Storage & Wheelchair Area The wheelchair area shall be designated by signage. Bicycle storage area signage will be determined in cooperation with the operator. It shall be open to bicyclists if there are no wheelchair users occupying this space. Bicycle tie downs will be provided. A hand railing will be provided along the wall immediately below the window sill for use by wheel chair occupants and bicyclists to secure their wheelchairs and bicycles.
