We create business leaders through a relevant core curriculum that emphasizes practice and theory. Biblical teachings integrated into each course mold you into a servant leader who is prepared for the workplace and ready to impact the kingdom of God. As a business major, you will focus on and cultivate your passions as you learn to navigate the fastpaced world of business.


EXPERIENCE MATTERS Our business majors are offered a range of concentrations taught from a Christian business perspective. Our professors bring a varied set of experiences and integrate business leaders to speak to the class. You will hear about small-town business, large corporations, heartland America and global communities. We also believe that real-world experience is essential to a complete education as we seek out internships for our students during their time at Sterling College.


CONCENTRATIONS ACCOUNTING

LEADERSHIP-MANAGEMENT

Equip yourself with accounting knowledge to prepare for entering the business world or to pursue additional education through a master’s program. Study accounting along with information systems, taxation and auditing.

Explore the fundamental areas of management – leading, planning, organizing and controlling – and leadership principles. This concentration helps develop the future leaders and managers in business.

CAPITALISM

Study the four classic functions of marketing and their application, including an analysis of the marketing mix, target market, segmentation, market research, product/service development, packaging, pricing, advertising, media and promotion.

Learn the concepts of capitalism and the free enterprise system. Explore the merits of a free society, intellectual freedom, economic freedom, the capitalistic economic structure and the role of governments in economic systems.

ECONOMICS Understand how both macro and micro economic perspectives drive most business decision making. Whether studying how markets organize economic behavior through monetary and fiscal policies, or resource allocation and income distribution, students in the economics concentration will seek to understand the forces that drive our national economy and the world.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP Learn the skills and knowledge necessary to become a successful entrepreneur. Students will focus on the planning, management, marketing, financing and operation of successful entrepreneurial enterprises.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS Explore the global marketplace and how international and multinational business is conducted. Study the extrinsic uncontrollable forces (competitive, distributive, economic, socioeconomic, financial, legal, physical, political, socio-cultural, and labor) and how they affect domestic, foreign and global business practices.

MARKETING

REAL ESTATE Learn real estate principles, appraisal, market analysis, finance and investment in the real estate development process that will prepare you for the real estate business, whether in residential, commercial, industrial or other types of real estate.

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP Social entrepreneurs find solutions to problems that currently exist in society and help implement the solution. This concentration focuses on the role of the social entrepreneur in contemporary society. You will study the social entrepreneur as a change agent in our communities and the economy as a whole, paying attention to its given mission as it relates to continuous innovation, adaptation and learning.

MEET OUR FACULTY... IRENE BARKMAN, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF BUSINESS Barkman is a licensed Certified Public Accountant with over 30 years of experience in public accounting. Business students at SC benefit from her experience with audits and financial statements, business accounting and preparation of income tax returns for individuals and corporate entities. Barkman earned her B.A. in Accounting and Business Administration from the University of Kansas and her M.A. in Accounting with an emphasis in taxation from Wichita State University. She also maintains her State of Kansas CPA license through continuing education. DR. T. H. KWA, PROFESSOR OF BUSINESS AND FERRARI-THOMPSON ENDOWED CHAIR Kwa brings experience in real estate, management, entrepreneurship and international business to Sterling College. Kwa graduated with honors from the University of Southern Maine with a B.S. in Economics. He earned his M.S. in Land Development and Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Science with an emphasis in real estate development and finance from Texas A&M.


DR. DALE LEVERING, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF BUSINESS AND MCVAY CHAIR OF BUSINESS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP Levering approaches his profession with a business-as-mission perspective. His classes emphasize servant leadership and encourage the upcoming generation of opinion leaders to engage business with a Kingdom of God perspective, purpose and impact. He has a variety of training including experience in the banking industry, the U.S. Department of Commerce, agriculture, Christian ministry and medical service with the U.S. Marine Corps through the U.S. Navy. He earned a B.A. in Military History from The Citadel and a B.B.A. with an emphasis in Management from Washburn University. He also holds an M.B.A. in Finance and Ph.D. in Economics from Kansas State University. TIMOTHY THORPE, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF BUSINESS Thorpe brings 11 years of operations and management experience to the Sterling College business department. Prior to coming to Sterling College, Thorpe was responsible for information and data security at Viking Collection Service in Eden Prairie, Minn. He also has experience in project management, business continuity, disaster recovery planning, and development. He holds a B.A. in Liberal Studies from Northwest Nazarene University and an M.B.A. from the University of Phoenix.

WE ARE COMPETITIVE AND STRONG At Sterling College, you will have the opportunity to participate in the Future Business Leaders of America Phi Beta Lambda chapter on campus. As an organization for budding business leaders, PBL attends state and national conferences and competitions. During the State Leadership Conference, you will have the chance to pit your business knowledge against students from other colleges and universities, possibly earning a bid to the National Leadership Conference. In 2012, all SC students who competed earned bids to the national conference.
