Story: Brianna Cutter

NEW YORK, NY - New York-based rock musician Tanner has been making all the right moves to becoming a big name rock artist. This summer has proved to be an awesome, breakthrough summer for Tanner. Back in the beginning of the summer, Tanner released his self-titled EP which went over fantastically with fans! Tanner has accomplished quite a lot in his life, musically, mentally, and even physically. Tanner’s story is definitely one filled with determination, ambition, and inspiration, that is why Stereo Noise is super excited to have been able to ask Tanner some questions about his accomplishments and all the hard work he has put in concerning his music. “I grew up around music. I would always listen to the oldies station and I fell in love with melodies and artists telling stories through their music. My dad played bass in a cover band and in an original band with one of Neil Young’s guitar players, Anthony Crawford, so I was immersed in music at an early age. I saw a Stone Temple Pilots show in 2001 and left that show knowing I wanted to get into music,” Tanner tells us when asked how he got involved with music. In his early life, Tanner had overcome a number of obstacles. Some of

which includes a drug addiction, as well as a rare, life-threatening blood disease. Because of these obstacles, Tanner has a ton of inspiration and motivation to put into his music. When asked to share where most of his inspiration comes from, Tanner replies with, “My inspiration comes from my life and what I live and see around me. I find myself being inspired by current events a lot lately. On this EP, I wrote all of the songs about a past relationship. Lately, I’ve been writing about the world a lot more, but always through my perspective. I’ll only write what I know and what I’ve lived.” And like all artists, Tanner too has some musical influences, “The Beatles are my biggest influences. Revolver is my favorite record of all time. I grew up with oldies music and country music, but threw away all of my country records when I discovered Nirvana. The great front men are my biggest influences; Bowie, Morrison, Weiland. I don’t play a lot of guitar on stage although I do on the recordings. I think music needs more people just singing and putting on a show. I don’t want to be confined to an instrument on stage. I love getting lost in the music, and having the ability to move around,” he explains.

“My inspiration comes from my life and what I live and see around me.”

In addition to the release of the EP, Tanner also released a music video for the first track on the EP, “Come Alive,” which he tells us about, “The reception from fans in regards for the video has been great, especially for a first release. People have read me some of the YouTube comments that have been really positive. I’m glad people seem to like it. My passion is to tell my stories in hopes that someone relates to what I have to say, and is lifted by it. When that happens, I feel great about it.” Tanner also puts into detail the experience of making the video, “The experience was great. I think music is half visual, so getting to put a visual to the song was great for me. I wanted to tell the story of the song without distracting from the song itself, so the concept was to keep it simple. I used a grainy and vintage texture on it to represent my memories of the relationship the song is about. My memories of that have become aged and half forgotten. I wanted to tell the story of getting close, coming together, and drifting apart. It’s about someone I met in treatment, related to, got close to, and started my life over with. When we went through that, we didn’t really know who we were, and once we

“My passion is to tell stories in hopes that someone relates to what I have to say, and is lifted by it. When that happens, I feel great about it.” found ourselves again, we drifted apart. So, I wrote a song about it from a positive perspective. Finding yourself after adversity is, after all, a very positive thing.” After having such a successful summer, what are Tanner’s plans for the future? He tells us, “I am working on another record. I think my sound is an ever-evolving thing, and I think I’ve really tapped into what that sound is while I’ve been working on new music. I just want to continue telling my stories and sharing them. I also plan to play more shows, because performing is what I enjoy doing the most.”

The energy and environment is big name artists such as The Word Alive, and I See so different from a regular/club show. That, on top Stars. Although this may seem like quite a fun life of the diverse spread of bands that are usually at to live, it comes with tons of hard work and said festivals makes it even better. As mentioned earlier, Axelson has toured It comes as no surprise that every great with a number of different bands in order to business endeavor must start small, and thats promote City to City Apparel, and to do some exactly what Axelson did with his clothing line, shooting as well. We’re really anywhere. It was excited about this new that feeling of being in the studio, and the material we’re working on! Mentally, thrill of hearing back through the we’re in a completely new place. We have speakers something you’d created.” accomplished more in the past year that After starting to jam and record we could have ever hoped for. And a lot of together, the guys got down to business that came with our management and PR putting together music for their first fullteam. They brought focus! Our way of length which was released back in 2013 thinking altered when it came to almost titled, “Between Two Cities,” which was a every aspect of the band. This is all that huge success amongst their fans and we want to do, so we really started listeners. When asked about the reception pushing the band to be a career instead of from fans, the guys explain “We were a hobby, since some of us have sacrificed really surprised to see how far that record taking on “real” jobs to play music. really took the band, especially since it Overall, we are just ready to take the next was marketed last minute and at the time step.” of it’s release we were just signing with

What exactly is that next step, you ask? Well, this summer the band took more than just one step, but they have been taking multiple with all the opportunities being thrown their way! Just recently, the band has become part of the Ernie Ball family, which the guys are super excited about. “It’s just plain awesome. None of us have ever used anything for strings except Ernie Ball. All of our accessories come from Ernie Ball. So when we got this endorsement, it made total sense, since we use all of their stuff already! Hybird Slinky’s are a band favorite. But long story short, we’re really ecstatic about it. It’s humbling to be endorsed by the same company that endorses bands like Blink-182, Four Year Strong, Eric Clapton, and of course Slash. We’re stoked. Check out their incredible roster at ernieball.com!” The guys tell us. Aside from endorsement, another big opportunity the band was given this summer was to take part in a Canadian tour with Canadian band Harbour. In regards to the tour, the guys tell us “We’re going out with a Canadian band called

Harbour. Great dudes. None of us have ever been to Canada, so we’re really excited about touring there, we’re going to try to sight-see as much as possible. We’ve also heard really good things about the areas we’re playing, so we’re hoping for some awesome good times at the shows!” So what exactly can fans expect from Count To Four over the next couple of months? Besides the Canadian Tour, fans can definitely expect some new music from the band! When asked if any new music is in the work, they respond with, “Funny you mention that actually. We’ve been recording demos for the past several months. We’re really stoked on the new material. It’s a more mature sound for sure, but we’re really excited about what we have so far. Plan is to finish up demos and head to the studio. (with whom we don’t know yet)” So there you have it! Lots of great news from the guys of Count To Four. With such a successful beginning few years for the band, the future is looking mighty bright for Count To Four!
