Parents are frequently asking me what they need to do in order for their children to be successful. Research shows a link between parent involvement and student success. For us as parents, we are required to have self-discipline and to set a great example for our children. Try to: Put priorities on the calendar, such as study time and school events. Have a quiet place for homework to be accomplished and don't do it for him/her. Create routines. Read. Exercise. Go to the library. Have a nutritious family meal. Talk with your child to show an interest in school. Keep in touch with the teachers and attend parent-teacher conferences and school events. Be consistent. Use a daily and weekly schedule that work The beginning of the year is filled with excitement and new routines for us all. Our children and ALL of us are well on our way to a very successful year! We love being with you and your children and look forward to seeing you at the grade level coffees. Warmly, Kris Matteson Charlton Head of School

STEPS GREEN TEAM Want to get some exercise and help the planet at the same time? Try a Walking School Bus. A walking school bus is an organized group of kids either walking or cycling to school along with an adult supervisor and picked up at designated stops along the way. In a study of 149 fourth grade school children in Houston, Texas, researchers found that children who participated in a walking school bus program were twice as likely to continue "active commuting" -- meaning opting for peoplepowered transportation rather than automobiles -- and increased their daily activity of moderateto-vigorous activity by seven minutes per day. In the control group, kids who did not participate in a walking school bus program showed a decrease in daily moderate physical activity over the five-week period of the study.
