According to her, the Division of Cadiz City is working together to realize this end through going for GOAL. “We go for GOAL, Go Organic Agriculture Landscape, because we want healthy kids in DepEd-Cadiz,” she said, adding that with this goal, all the corners of the school must be planted with vegetables.

r.VFGMNHS- Daga Extension High School (DEHS) community welcomes the official delegates to the Division of Cadiz City BSP 2018 Round -up Inspection and Advancement Camp on October 28 -31.

Exactly 1,672 boy scouts and scouters from elementary to senior high school participated in the said event, specifically 339 kab scouts, 604 boy scouts, 26 she scouts, 240 senior scouts and 82 rover scouts together with the 192 adults from 70 public and private schools.

During the grand opening program, Mrs. Sandra May L. Ardeña, head teacher of the host school gave her opening remarks wherein she warmly welcomes the scouters in DEHS. Mrs. Gladys Amylaine D. Sales, camp director (OIC-SDS) gave an inspirational message and Vice Mayor Lilia Decolongon

delivered also her message who came in behalf of the city mayor.

In addition, Antonio Sabedoria ALT, program committee chair challenged the scouts to practice “CLAYGO” and discipline themselves.

Scouting Sage on Stage

With his ardent passion for scouting, Joelito V. Oberes has been in the scouting movement for 54 straight years. The 65-year -old retired principal of Cadiz West II Elementary School has started young as a Kab scout in Grade I as influenced by his mom. He became a boy scout during Grades IV to VI. However, his scouting journey was hampered by a four-year hiatus during high school because of the mandatory curricular course. His zeal for the movement was so strong, on the other hand, that it had put him as the assistant scout master in college.

For our spiritually m o t i v a t e d scouter who finished his Master of Ministry in 2016 and Master of Divinity in 2017 at Convention Bible Baptist College in Bacolod City, scouting wasn’t just an activity a student is encouraged to join in school, but more than that, it is his life. He would religiously attend every single training in BSP not merely for himself but for the entire organization relevant to community building.

“I am doing it for the Boys,” Mr. Oberes uttered heartily.

His scouting walk didn’t end after college. From the year 1977 to 1985, he had served as the North District Scout Coordinator in the Division of Cadiz City.

Eventually, he was given a chance to

participate in a scout training which earned him the Woodbadge Rank at Mt. Makiling in 1991. Somehow, this paved him the way to becoming the Division BSP Coordinator of Cadiz City in 2000.

For our star here, scouting is a collective journey. As he advances in rank, so should the scouts he is guiding. Thus, as easy as one, two, three, he became the first unit leader to produce 15 Eagle Scouts in Cadiz.

That was one of the highest points in his scouting voyage. But as a hackneyed saying goes, “Everything that comes up must come down.” Sir Boy, as what others fondly call him, was no exemption to this.

“I had a lot of lowest points in my BSP experience,” he honestly s h a r e d . N e v e r t h el e s s , t h e s e emotional downfalls have not hindered him to continue serving.

His definite motivation has not faltered even just a bit. Rather, he chose to move forward because he is aiming a social and moral transformation for the Boys. There wasn’t a need to stop to give room for self-pity; time is crucial, so he needs to walk some more or else nothing will happen to the difference he is trying to make.

His heart was already strong, but what he needs is an enduring one. To suffice

this necessity, he continued joining more training, including one which enabled him to become a trainer himself. In 2001, he completed the Course for Assistant Trainer. A decade and seven years after, he was one of the 56 BSP participants representing the Philippines to have finished the Asia Pacific International Leader Training Course attended by 22 countries around the world. His wide-ranging scouting experience has put him to his present position as an Executive Board Member in the BSP Negros O c ci dental Council.

With everything that he achieved in scouting, there is no denying that Sir Boy is indeed an excellent scouter.

For him, “Excellence means doing things in uncommon way.”

To all the scouts and scouters alike, he has this message: “Continue on leading the Boys as a model.” By that, he slowly stood up from the mint green armchair with a legacy that every scout should live by, leaving us with his nugget of wisdom—a story worth sharing from the Scouting Sage on the Stage.

Time counts to scouts In experience, we learned a Latin expression, “Carpe Diem”, which, in a literal meaning, “to seize the day”. Still another traditional expression we learned is “never put off for tomorrow what we can do today”. All these expressions pertain to the value and importance of time. It is “Time is Gold” expression expressed in different particular ways.

Time here means the abstract force. It is understood not in thinking but in acting.

More so, time is power. It embodies the power of a king. It plays the role of a king in any social institution. This social institution might be a school, a church, a family, and other forms of social organizations. In ancient times, a king was the highest authority in any particular society and the populace fears the king. In the same way, today, getting late is our fear unless you will wait for the door to hit you on the way out.

Given that the essence of time evolves as humanity progresses, do

Time and again, boy scouting proves itself a force of good in education.

In today’s millennial context wherein young boys are constantly exposed to the pitfalls of socio-cultural evolution; threatened by the dangers and ills that go alongside technological advancement; and afforded with greater independence and sense of entitlement, boy scouting has become even more valuable.

The great outdoors, host to exciting scouting adventures - seems like a huge classroom filled with learning opportunities for practical life, decision-making, and taking responsibility through relevant activities that develop the soft skills of kindness, resilience, and common sense which our schools alone could never do.

Accordingly, we commend the scouting movement and its ideals, more so the able men and women who have manifested selfless commitment and have rendered honest hardwork towards its noble cause. Our collective efforts may never be enough, not duly recognized nor compensated, but let us be consoled by the idea of the great Mahatma Gandhi that “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”. For what we do to others, is what we do to God. Let this be our sustaining force of good.

I GOT STINKY, I GOT DIRTY, BUT SEE? I LEARNED. FAMILIAR? WORDS UTTERED BY A BOY IN A COMMERCIAL OF A POPULAR POWDERED MILK. RIGHT? Did your subject teachers excuse you in classes because you attended the BSP camp? Did your teacher tell you to get a special test because you missed the summative test? Did your teacher give you the highest score during the short or long quiz? Did your teacher mark you absent during that time? Did your teacher do not give any consideration at all?

We heard different stories and complaints from students and teachers specifically from scouts and scouters.

Did your classmates tease you that the class is better without you because you will attend the camp? Have you heard your parents saying, “Gasto naman!” Or have you experienced being scolded by your teacher because you came late in class after finishing your troop’s tripod?

Ikaw anong kwentong BSP mo?

Maybe your classmates forgot that learning doesn’t only take place in the four walls of the classroom. Maybe you forgot to explain and elaborate to your parents the activities and expenses of the camp. Some of your teachers did not give any consideration maybe because they thought the activity is irrelevant to the subjects handled by them.

But did they not realize that the different learning areas were integrated in the BSP camp?

Allow us to elaborate the scouts’ learning in the camp’s different activities.

In measuring they learned and applied Mathematics; Arts for parol making, Christmas tree and Christmas card making; Oral Communication in binalaybay; Physical Education for team building through games; Science and TLE were integrated in cooking and making gadgets; being responsible (AP) and brotherhood for EsP. Undeniably, the activities performed by the scouts were not only for play, but they also obtained the learning competencies that can be found in the curriculum. Based on Kolb’s Theory of Experiential Learning, experiencebased learning is so effective because it helps establish lasting behavior change. How? Rather than simply understanding a new subject or gaining a skill, we develop new habits and behaviors.In fact, according to the 70 20 10 model, 70% of what we know comes from experience and trying new things. Yet, the real learning happens when we reflect on those experiences! Research confirms that quality reflection time helps us learn.

Professor D.A. Kolb said, “Knowledge results from the combination of grasping experience and transforming it.”

So what are you waiting for? You have a lot of experiences after the three-day camp or you just read this article. What’s next? REFLECT and be TRANSFORMED.

LAGING HANDA. When a random person hears this line, this is of no value. For a scout’s ear, meanwhile, this would morph into a pithy maxim full of meaning as this is somehow reflective of one’s camping experiences. The one-liner “Laging Handa” seems to have an invisible emotional string knotted into the heart of every scout. This is the mirror of their scouting life and their reputation. More than that, this is how they should be: always ready.

However, the problems encountered during Day Zero of the 2018 Round Up Inspection and Advancement Camp somehow sullied this reputation of them. There were a lot of issues I heard, but I am only sure of two: There was no express means of information dissemination and instructions to easily control the scouts, and the lights within the camping area were not readily installed for every scout’s safety.

I don’t have a single inkling of the root cause of all these dilemmas, but I assume that it can be traced back from the planning stage.

There might be factors forgotten and angles left out during the preparatory process, which eventually led to these problems. The ineffective or lack of leadership could also be one of the reasons why these happened. It might as well be that the tasks were not delegated properly to the members of the scouting committee. Or it could be because of any other reasons… I don’t really know.

Let me make myself clear: I am not here to point fingers (because I am not in the position to) or find the

rightful scapegoat for all these difficulties. I am not here to attack a person either. I am here to tell everyone involved to never leave every “j” undotted and “t” un-crossed concerning these shortcomings. We must dig deeper into these problems until we see the roots, so we could avoid the same mistake to happen again in the future.

I would agree when someone said that this incident is a manifestation of unpreparedness among the scouts and scouters. By agreeing, however, I don’t mean totally because readiness, for me, is not only confined facility-wise but emotionally as well.

Though the bar plummeted hard at one aspect, the scouts were passionate enough to renew their reputation at the other.

They were emotionally ready.

The scouting committees were brave enough to own to their lapses and were prompt enough to address them with the active involvement of the barangay council. Apart from that, what captured my admiration for every scout more is their humility to accept their shortcomings when they refused to raise the banner of the Advancement Camp during the opening ceremony for they were firm to admit that they didn’t deserve it yet, given all the problems encountered during the previous day. That was a dramatic moment for me and I know it was more for the scouts. It was not a display of bravery - it was courage.

By that, the mud to their reputation was brushed off.

It was in grade school when my desire for learning something through scouting started.

Isang katangi-tanging parte ng pag-aaral ko ang pagsali sa scouting na siyang nag-udyok sa aking sarili to do more things in a great way.

Mula sa pagsusuot ng uniporme ng scout tuwing Biyernes, magkaroon ng mga community service, lectures hanggang sa mga training sa araw-araw; I can really say that scouting is life and a life-long journey. Ito ay buhay na walang hanggan.

Ibat-ibang aktibidad ang pumuno sa aking karanasan mula noong elementarya hanggang ngayong hayskul. Tila kumukutitap ang mga mata kasabay ng mga bituin sa kalangitan nang maranasan ang unang pagtulog sa arkong bahay na pinatayo sa lupang ‘di man lang mapasyalan.

Sa sari-saring aktibidad na aking sinalihan ay iba’t ibang tao rin ang aking mga nakasalamuha.

Ngiti ang naiwan sa mukha na ‘di man lang maipinta dahil sa pagod, kasiyahan ang naramdaman at ang naiuwi; hindi ang sakit at pasa sa katawan.

“Putik is life, but scouting is lifer.” Umulan man o uminit, bumaha man o magputik, tuloy pa rin ang sinimulan at tatapusin nang may kaalaman.

Sa pagsikat ng araw, kasama ang ibang scout, hawak-hawak ko ang baonan ng tubig at mahabang patpat na tinuturing na tungkod sa daang binabagtas. Masikip at masukal ang daan kung kaya’t puno ng kaba ang dibdib na may halong pananabik.

Sumasabay ang pagtulo ng pawis sa unang paghakbang sa daan.

Mahirap at masukal ang dinadaan sa ilalim ng sikat ng araw. Kinikimkim ang pagod at hirap makamit lang ang tuktok.

Sa huling pagpawi ng mga dahon, bumulagta ang kagandahang nakikita. Napalitan ng ngiti ang ngiwi ng pagod at hirap sa pag-akyat sa bundok.

Habang tumataas ang lebel ng camping, tumataas rin ang lebel ng kasiyahan—kasiyahan sa bawat araw na naipapasa sa iba. Ang 6th ASEAN Scout Jamboree, 3rd one Visayas Jamboree, 1st Environmental Scout Education Jamboree at 1st Negros Island Region Invitational Camp ay iilan lang sa mga Jamboree na aking nasalihan. Ang mga ito ay nagbigay sa akin ng mga alaalang pawang ‘di malilimutan.

Scouting really taught me good values and built my character. Tatak sa puso ng lahat ang batas ng scout, pati na rin ang mga karanasan at kamalian na nagbigay ng mga aral na magagamit sa arawaraw.

Nobyembre 19, 2017: Ito ang araw na nagtatak sa kasaysayan ng aking buhay. Sa araw na ito, ako ay nagkamit ng karangalan. Ang lahat ng mga pagsasakripisyo at paghihirap ay napalitan ng ngiti at pananabik.

Pagkatapos ranasin ang lahat ng mga hirap at bako-bakong daan ay naabot ko rin ang aking inaasam. Sa wakas, ang pagiging Eagle Scout ay narating ko na. Hindi man ito kasing layo ng 6th ASEAN Scouts Jam o kasinganda ng mga memorabilya ng mga camps, ito ay isang kasaysayan na nagpawi sa lahat ng pagsasakripisyo at paghihirap.

Akala ko ay doon na nagtatapos ang paglalakbay.

Hindi pa pala - the adventure has just started. Bagkus ito ang nagsilbing bagong pahina ng community service at pagiging Eagle Scout.

Sila ay dadalo sa taunang pagdiriwang ng Division Round Up Inspection and Advancement Camp ng Cadiz City Scouting Movement.

Ang tatlong kakaibang scouts na ito ay kabilang sa Indigenous People (IPs) ng lungsod ng Cadiz na kasalukuyang naninirahan sa maliit na pook ng Manara sa Brgy.

Celestino Villacin. Kilala sila sa tawag na ATAH at may lahing Aeta na isa sa pinakaprominenting IPs ng bansa. Ang kanilang mumunting pook ay nakakubli sa pinakapaanang bahagi ng bukirin ng lunsod na halos 56 kilometro ang layo mula sa main city.

Sa wakas, narating ng mumunting ATAH ang camp site at lalong lumaki ang ngiti sa kanilang mga labi nang makita ang napakaraming scouts na dumalo. Hindi inaasahan ng magpinsan na ang kanilang nadatnan ay subra pa sa kanilang inaasahan. Ang kanilang pagdalo sa ganitong pansangay na palatuntunan ng DepEd ay isang malaking hakbang sa kanilang buhay.

Ito’y isang karanasan na tatatak hindi lang sa kanilang mga ulirat kundi uukit sa kaibuturan ng kanilang mga puso.

“Kas-a Romel, kas-a Raymond, naminami di bala, damo boy scouts.

Nasadyahan gid ko diri. Gusto ko man mag Eagle Scout mag high school na ko!”

Ito ang sandali na hindi malilimutan nina Raymond, Romel at Reymart kung saan masasabi nila sa sila ay bahagi din ng Scouting Movement at talaga nga namang sila’y iskawts din!

NEWSONPOINT hirty schools all throughout the different districts of the elementary and secondary competed in the scouting games, held at Daga Extension High School field.

The activity brought approximately 300 boy scouts and senior scouts making Daga Extension`s field full of festivities and games for a day.

The program of activities offers a wide variety of fun and exciting outdoor games such as longest line, skin the snake, two-man carry and pyramid building.

Particularly, other schools failed in some part of the games and find hard to come up with a good selection of these activities.

Some of them triumphed during the day-long activities.

In senior scouts category, Tagbanon representing District IX landed 1st place in pyramid building followed by Alimatoc of District VIII and Dr. VFGMNHS of District 10 while in boy scouts category, 1st place went to Tres

Andanas; Cabras, 2nd place and SOLPA 3rd place.

In two-man carry senior scouts category, 1st place slipped down to Tiglawigan of District VIII; Tagbanon of District IX, 2nd place; while SPED from District X got 3rd place; boy scouts category: Tres Andanas, District III, 1st place; Mabini, District IV, 2nd place; Egido, District V, 3rd place.

Andres Bonifacio grabbed the 1st place in the longest line senior scouts category followed by Cadiz Viejo and Villacin; boy scouts category: Villacin seized the 1st place; Bayabas ES, 2nd place and Alimatoc, 3rd place.

On the other hand, Aluyan from District IX conquered the 1st place in the skin the snake competition; Alimatoc, 2nd place and Jerusalem, 3rd place; boy

scouts category, Luis Uychiat, District VI, 1st place; Paniqui-on, District I, 2nd place; Alingating, District IV, 3rd place.

“Kapoy pero sadya kag maka learn ka nga importante ang cooperation nga may disiplina sa inyo team”, Kim John Borja, senior scout of Luna Extension HS said.

Furthermore, KL May-lyn T. Cabras led the Kawan Olympics. They also had their campfire led by KL Danilo L. Diaz, Jr. Campfire’s burning was sung as the kab scouts’ community song. There were

also commissioner’s minutes and presentation of songs and yells.

KLs had a staff preparation and orientation through the leadership of KL coordinator, Cherry A. Ocon.

aricolored tents gradually patched the wide grassy emptiness until a sea of colors can be seen from a bird’s eye view. One camp gate is a rival to the other in reaching for the skies so high and blue. Up from the earth’s dusty flesh spring bamboo poles with predominantly neon flags atop, dancing with every gentle blow of the wind. Uniforms the color of desert sand scatter around the camping area edged by rural houses, verdant trees and bushes and a train of classrooms. From afar, it looks like a fun-filled carnival.
