PRO-MINENT DOMAIN

During a study-abroad semester in Rome, Italy, students studied and reinvented the “Danteum” by Giuseppe Terragni, whose design was dedicated to the three books of the Divine Comedy, written by the Italian poet Dante Aligeri. After reading the Divine Comedy and Schumacher’s book on the subject, students prepared their own architectural interpretation of the epic poem, locating the work on the original site at the intersection of Via dei Fori Imperiali and Via Cavour; Students incorportated full program of the original library design by Terragni, including a library “complete with all that is needed for students of Dante.”

“ Re-designing Viaduct spaces¹ ” Urban Semester in NYC, United States

This New York City urban studio focused on the potential of existing elevated transit infrastructure to contribute to public space by constructing a framework for thinking creatively about spaces dominated by existing elevated transportation infrastructure. Elevated transportation infrastructure in cities is commonly perceived as a blighting influence at various scales by dividing neighborhoods and cutting cities off from their waterfronts. As the "underside" of these infrastructures, viaductspaces are stigmatized as under-lit and overlooked: there is a self-fulfilling perception that they are not only dirty, but also dangerous.

Kunsthaus Tacheles is a kind of an island state, an artists’ social collective, surrounded by an ocean of redevelopment, gentrification and commercialization. Kunsthaus Tacheles,“the official counter-culture art collective” is facing an eviction and dissolution due to the tension between the ‘lawful’ land ownership by the bank and the artists currently occupying the site. The situation has been escalated by the landowners trying to demolish the ruin-artifact architecture for commercial interests. To preserve the lawless vibrancy of artistic experimentation while permitting the redevelopment approved for the site, a radical measure must be taken: tacheles must be walled off from the outside. The new development must encase the exisisting Tacheles as a vital urban artifact, providing outward interface with the commercial world of art, while inwardly supporting the existing compound, tightly regulating the exchange between the worlds.

“Die Ideale sind ruiniert - retten wir die Ruine!” “The ideal is ruined - we save the ruin!” Ruins are displayed photographs taken immediately after the WWII and the demolition efforts.

Context: Tacheles is located in Berlin Mitte, former East Berlin, Germany at the intersection between Oranienburgerstrasse and Friedrichstrasse; the region has served as a cultural breeding ground since the rise of subculture after the WWII.

1907 Opens as a mega shopping structure

1928

Various art collectives were able to thrive because of the abundance of buildings that were damaged, abandoned, and in dispute. These ruinous buildings served as perfect hosts for activities that were neither welcome nor possible in the other more refined parts of the city.

Mall bankrupt and taken over by AEG; founded Hausder Technik (Display and marketing space)

WWII Parts of the building used by Nazi Party for administration and organization departments; French prisoners of war detained on the fifth floor

Berlin Mitte encompasses other Berlin’s historic core such as: Museum Island, Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden, Potsdamer Platz, the Reichstag, and Berlin Hauptbahnhof, while being encased by the vestigial remains of the Berlin Wall.

1943 Allied air raids; building was hit by bombs, partly damaged

1948 One side of the building used; the other side slowly being torn down

1989 Berlin Wall comes down; Rise of subculture

1990 Building discovered and taken by a group of young artists

The Neue Wall primes the ground for resurrection of the displaced counter-culture while by celebrating its separation from the outside interests and forces. The architectural intervention represents a new typology that serves as a living museum teeming with life, growth, death, and resurrection of the isolated artist collective as well as of the original building. The Neue Wall serves as a site for discovery, understanding, and mediation of the isolated and secluded Tacheles, providing deliberate opportunities for the public to discover a radically creative lifestyle through a theatrical procession of the artistsm made possible by the intervention. It is a hatchery for the diverse cultural activities that Tacheles has been exploring--such as painting, poetry, jewelry-making, theater performances, and more. The ruin of the Friedrichstrasse Passagen rises as a new iconographic consummation of architectural and cultural resurrection.

Not unlike other modern museums housing the distinguished artworks nearby, artists are protected within the new network of barricade. By a spatial and formal barrier, artists are walled off from the public through the mesh-like intervention; they become entities disparate from the public as if there is spatial and temporal chasm, despite the transparency that still alludes particiation. The public walks through the labyrinthine, luring catwalks strung through the ruincomplex. They are deliberately displayed, scrutinized by the visitors, and the artists’ live performances become specimens for studies of urban cultural growth. There are more revelations and connections formed with the artists as the visitors become intrigued by the separation.

Welcomed by the historic arch, newcomers are faced with “prologue which offeres snippets of impressions of what is to be revealed. As the visitors walk around the building to the entrance, they encounter the ruinous back building facade, which partially reveals architectural and programmatic abundance of the building. One is then met with the cafe and the cinema, which offer more friendly view of the programs. Walking up from the cafe, the newcomers have the artist studio / sactuary revealed, slowly getting accustomed to the atmosphere and activities of the complex. Then the public begins to engage actively with Tacheles at the theatre and the forum/ promontory where they are symbollically freed from the frame they were encased in.

Tacheles is excavated and manipulated in an attempt to produce spaces reminiscent of its superimposed layers of history- by discarding its main corridors and passageways, the newly created void hosts the public passage through the building while echoing its original architectural moves--such as the grand central passageway. The parts are boldly gouged out in order to invoke experiential spaces fitting as a sacred asylum for counterculture and architecture. the labyrinthine vestige of the building is explored by a new addition of a layer of ramps and catwalks that guides passengers through the excavation site. The void occupied by the visitor is encased in a frame that reinforces the clear conceptual separation. Then gradually the public is homogenized and defiled into the counter-culture and the beauty of the squalor.

The forms of the Reverse Colosseum are derived from the surrounding monuments and the ruins. It is an epitome of decay and deformation, as well as excavation and preservation; I intended to emphasize the theme of reversal and the preservation of antiquity (the continuity of the public realm) and evoke the topography of Rome as a juxtaposition of hills and valleys; the notion of plaza was used and reversed; the idea of excavation and preservation was incorporated and distorted.

Experience: One approaches the corner of Via dei Fori Imperiali and Via Cavour in intersection after passing through excavation sites proudly displaying its decaying monuments. Then one is met with a strange object. However, the Colosseum stands far away in the distant. One takes the pristine white staircase that spills out from the building. The viewer is standing in an elliptical void resembling the inside of the Colosseum. One continues through the revolving glass doors and is suddenly enshrouded by a bright atrium.

03 Fire and Ice 2010 Fall - Academic Caroline O’Donnell

This comprehensive studio focused on creating a firehouse in downtown Ithaca, NY location near Cornell University campus. This exercise asked for creative programmatic explorations for providing firefighting services as well as looking for ways to engage with the people of Ithaca. Location was to be explored and chosen by individual students, and my design goal was to provide unique opportunities for residents of Ithaca by offering unique educational programs as well as gym and cafe where the public. Visitors would be able to explore the firehouse by the ramps located outside without intruding on the private rest areas and heart of the program-the garage. There is clear separation of the public-private relationship.
