Die 2014 entstandene Serie gibt durch den Titel das Thema vor. Es geht um die Auswirkungen des schlimmsten tropischen Wirbelsturms, der je dokumentiert wurde. Abbens Malereien lösen sich jedoch von dem großen Unglück und werden zu allgemeingültigen Sinnbildern einer Naturkatastrophe. Paradigmatisch verdichtet sie in ihren Arbeiten die Stimmung des Danach, indem sie verlassene, geisterhafte Orte und zerstörte, ruinenhafte Architektur zeigt. Es sind keine Abbilder des Ereignisses, sondern fiktiv komponierte Zeugnisse. Die Darstellungen evozieren ein Gefühl der Ungewissheit. Die Behausungen sind offenkundig nicht mehr nutzbar und drohen im nächsten Moment zu kollabieren. Aber wo sind die Menschen, die sie einst bewohnten? Es scheint, als gäbe es keine Stabilität, keinen Halt. Wie ein Sog aus Farbe werden ganze Häuser optisch in die Tiefe gerissen. Und doch, ein unbeschadeterer, rosafarbener Sonnenschirm steht am Strand, in einer anderen Szenerie hängt Wäsche auf einer Leine. Ein Zeichen für einen Neubeginn, ein Hoffnungsschimmer oder entmenschte Endzeit? In einem grotesken Spiel mit Form und Farbe werden die Realitätsverhältnisse aufgelöst. Gleich den Bauten wurde die Natur durch die Urgewalt entwurzelt. Abben malt Bilder des Chaos, in dem Natur und Urbanes, Spuren menschlichen Lebens, zu verschmelzen scheinen. Gleichzeitig verschwindet Gegenstand und wird zur puren Essenz der Malerei, nämlich Farbe auf Leinwand. Es sind abstrakte Elemente in den Bildern, Farbflächen, die ineinander verzahnt sind und ineinander fließen. Sie werden zu Oasen der Ruhe. In dem Auftaktbild der Serie ist der Sturm noch regelrecht spürbar, zarte, biegsame Äste tänzeln im Wind. Japanisch muten sie an, wie Details aus einem Bild von Katsushika Hokusai, dem Meister der gemalten Naturereignisse. Einen Hinweis der Verortung gibt es dann doch in Abbens Zyklus, die wehende Flagge in Blau, Weiß, Rot mit dem gelben Stern verweist auf die Philippinen, nun zum Synonym für die Hilflosigkeit des Menschen gegen die Urgewalten der Natur geworden.

The title of series, created in 2014, determines the topic. It’s about the impact of the worst tropical cyclone ever recorded. Abbens paintings detach themselves from the disaster and become general representations of a natural catastrophe. She paradigmatically concentrates in her works the atmosphere of the aftermath by showing deserted ghostlike places und destroyed, ruin like architecture. They are no representations of the event but fictional composed evidence. The depictions evoke a feeling of uncertainty. The housings are obviously not inhabitable anymore and threaten to collapse at any moment. But where are the people who once used to live there? It seems as if there was no more stability, no more hold. Like a maelstrom out of colors whole houses are optically pulled into the abyss. And yet an undamaged umbrella stands on the beach, in another scene laundry hangs up on a clothes line. A symbol for a new start, a sign of hope or dehumanized apocalypse? Reality is dissolved by a grotesque play of forms and color. Just as the buildings nature was uprooted by the primal force. Abben paints pictures of the chaos in which nature and urban structures, traces of human life, seem to amalgamate. At the same time the object disappears and becomes pure essence of painting, namely color on canvas. There are abstract elements in the pictures and color planes which are interlocked and flow into each other. They become oases of calmness. In the first picture of the series the storm can still be felt, delicate, flexible branches dance in the wind. They appear Japanese like details out of a picture by Katsushika Hokusai the master of painted natural events. However, there is one hint of location in Abbens series. It’s the flying flag in blue, white and red with the yellow star, referring to the Philippines, which became now a symbol for the helplessness of humans against the primal forces of nature.
