ANNOUNCEMENT: THE WINNERS OF ‘VISIT’ 2014 RWE Foundation are STEFANO CAGOL and MERLIN BAUM The jury has selected the projects by Merlin Baum (www.merlinbaum.de) and by Stefano Cagol (www.stefanocagol.com). A jury decides which of the artists who apply shall be given the opportunity to work for up to six months within the RWE corporation. 2014 Tobia Bezzola (Director Museum Folkwang), Mischa Kuball (artist and Professor at the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln) and Andreas Beitin (Director ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art, Karlsruhe) have made the decision. Offices and power plants are usually not places where you would assume to find visual artists. The RWE Foundation, however, demonstrates that even such places may offer artists a platform for work. The Foundation’s Culture division has launched an Artist-in-Residence programme. VISIT invites artists to implement projects that are related to RWE, to energy topics and their social relevance. About VISIT The VISIT programme of the RWE Foundation promotes young artists by offering them a free space for pursuing individual design work. At the invitation of the Foundation, the selected artists develop their respective project over a period of about six months. Depending on the topic, this takes place at a German or also possibly an international location of the company. The artistic work should have an explicit reference to RWE, the topic of energy, and its social relevance. The objective of the programme is to initiate a reciprocal involvement between the company and artists. Merlin Baum beschäftigt sich mit dem Moment, in dem der Mensch etwas auslöst, Energie freisetzt, um eine Maschine oder einen Mechanismus in Gang zu setzten. Die Objekte, die aus seinem Arbeitsprozess entstehen, tragen den Schwerpunkt Interface als zentrales Element in sich. So ist die Bedienung seiner Objekte durch den Menschen nicht nur möglich, sondern notwendig. Mit dem kinetischen Licht-Interface entwickelt Merlin Baum ein Umfeld, in dem es erforderlich ist, dass die Besucher als einzelne Person oder Gruppe aktiv agieren. Dabei dürfen sie sich frei bewegen und unter dem Licht-Interface tanzen, es anpusten oder mit Hilfe eines Faltblattes Luftströme erzeugen, um der Installation Leben zu verleihen.
Merlin Baum focuses on the moment when man initiates some thing, releases energy to start a machine or a mechanism. The central element of the objects that emerge from this work process is the interface. The operation of his objects by man is not only possible but it is necessary. With the kinetic light interface, Merlin Baum has developed a setting that requires visitors to play an active part either as individuals or as a group. They are allowed to move freely, dancing underneath the light interface, blowing on it or producing currents of air with the aid of a leaflet to make the installation come alive.

Eine Reise in Form einer Tournee, mit einer Vielzahl von Vorführungen, Video- und Fotodokumentation, Erstellung von Kunstwerken / konstant unterwegs, Verbreitung eines Tagebuchs, eine Karte online. An Orten, wo kulturelle Energie ihre Kraft entfaltet und wo sich Energieströme miteinander verbinden.
