••••••••• HIGHLIGHTS BY

HOLLAND COTTER

As much an art world rite as an exhibition, the Venice Biennale, in its 55th edition, will open to the public on June 1. Along with the official offerings in the national pavilions that make up the Biennale itself, there will be a constellation of related shows and scenes spread throughout the city. Over the next few days, I'll be taking note of just a few things that catch my eye as events unfold.

Jeremy Deller, winner of the Turner Prize, is an artist, archivist, fabulist, curator and, above all, a collaborator. For his biennale presentation, titled "English Magic," he has included, among other things, drawings done by prisoners in British jails and has brought eight ex-offenders, all training for a career in the arts, to Venice to participate in the show. With a bare minimum of material and a maximum of ideas, the artists Alexandra Pirici and Manuel Pelmus, based in Bucharest, bring art history to life. Under their direction, an otherwise empty Romanian pavilion is occupied every day by five performers in street clothes who choreographically enact works, many with political implications, that appeared in Venice biennales from the 19th century and to the 21st.

The artist Simryn Gill, who lives in both Australia and Malaysia, has always worked with ephemeral materials, like collages made from single letters cut from books, and photographic images of natural processes. Her installation for the Australian pavilion adds an extra dimension of vulnerablity: for the Biennale part of the pavilion roof has been removed, leaving her art open to the elements.
