A designer is only as creative as they are ambitious. The very essence of a designer is not the creative or innovative pressure to come up with the “next best idea. It can be found in the emotional energy one puts into a project. It is this fuel which empowers the designer to establish a connection between humanity and the spaces we inhabit. It is what allows a space to exhibit a personality, and it is how designers can measure their success. In commercial design, it is the designers ambition to reflect a companies’ideals, energy, and personality, while simultaneously providing a productive enviornment for the company to grow.

N As this company is relatively new, the size, in terms of associates, is still small. Therefore, the goal of this project was not to utilize every bit of the floor plate because this office is located in a high-rise building with other offices located on the same floor. The core of the building already being provided, the main goal was to utilize the floor plate to properly meet the needs of the client. Analyzing the effects of natural sunlight have on employees in a work environment assisted in developing the layout on the plan. The administrative offices are situated on the north part of the building to reduce direct sunlight into the space, cutting costs of air conditioning and reducing the carbon footprint. The open office spaces are situated along the west and south parts of the building to allow some natural lighting during the later half of the day to increase productivity in employees during the "post-lunch blues."

Reception The reception area should be the first introduction to the essence of the company. As this company develops toys for children, oftentimes, the engineering department would host sessions for children to come in and test the toys. Therefore, it is important to keep the reception area intriguing to the youthful energy of a child, while also maintaining a sense of professionalism to attract important investors.

Desk Plan

Reception Area Perspective The reception desk features two full size monitors for the receptionist to process information and keep sensitive information away from the interaction counter. A unique feature of the reception area is the interactive "Think Tank." The "Think Tank" features interactive whiteboards equipped with projectors for children to participate in engaging activities while they wait to enter the testing room. Not only does this allow kids to engage their minds, it also eliminates negative association with waiting rooms and replaces it with positive memories.

Wayfinding Strategies SOFFIT OVER DOORWAYS ILLUMINATE AS ONE APPROACHES VIA MICRO-CHIP CARD GIVEN BY RECEPTIONIST LIGHT TRACK FOR ILLUMINATED PATHWAYS AND INTEGRATED WAYFINDING

Hallway Elevation

The wayfinding within the Engineering department incorporates conceptual design as well as functional properties. The trim along to top of the columns acts as a wayfinding technique. As you turn the corner to the open office system, you will see the honeycomb shape, which reflects the workers in the "bee hive." Not only this, each column acts as a progress marker for the engineers and product designers to track their progress. As each phase of product design progresses, a bee is put on the next column, until it reaches the large flower. Once a bee reaches the flower, a new prototype is ready to be tested. This ornamentation utilizes the structural column and creates something beautiful and purposeful.

Combatting wayfinding should always be a concern when designing a public space. Along each hallway and above every door, is an illuminated track color-coded for each department. Upon entering the reception area, a guest is given a card equipped with a sensor that triggers the corresponding light for the guest to follow. It also contains a built-in speaker to assist those visually impaired.

Typical Workstation

The owner of the company believes that her employees should enjoy their workspace with optimum comfort. To ensure each employee's satifaction, Steelcase furniture was specified as it is imperative to ergonomic stability. The typical workstation includes a Gesture chair with a headrest, dual adjustable armsrests, and touch-sense heigh adjusting desk to correct posture and allow employes to work while standing.

Miscellaneous Custom Designs To maintain a creative atmosphere, I designed the Sensory Station for employees to test and develop toys targeted to a more diverse audience. These stations can be found around each department, as well as in the toy testing room.

SENSORY STATION

RELAXATION STATION

Allows children with autism to create their own art and toys

Custom break stations allow access to reak room amenities such as a microwave and miniature refrigerator.

The Relaxation Station provides employees with a creative pop-up structure for them to enjoy a quick lunch. This station creates a positive work-environment through youthful association to working. It also serves as a transitional meeting space.

At the time of this project, the office was preparing for a christmas party! This space allows enough room for employees to decorate the office for special occasions without infringing on their ability to work. Notice the integration of column design into purposeful ornamentation.
