One of the most useful things is the Find My Phone feature.

Have you put your phone down somewhere and don’t know where it is? Just hop onto your laptop and you can ring it remotely. If you think you’ve left it at work or the gym, or if it’s been stolen, you can locate it on a Bing™ map from Windows Live. You can lock the phone, or remotely erase all the data on it too.

You can create a Windows Live ID when you first turn on your Windows Phone handset. Or, visit www.live. com, hit Sign Up, and enter your email address.

Find the apps you need simply by browsing – just touch the Applications link on the Marketplace Hub, and you’ll see 16 categories to choose from such as Entertainment, Lifestyle, Travel and Business. Take your pick. The newest and most popular apps are at the top of the list, but if you want to find something specific, you can do this by pressing the Search button on your Windows Phone – the one with the magnifying glass on it. When you type in what you’re looking for it will search specifically in the Applications section of the Marketplace and list the best matches in order. Using Marketplace requires a Zune account – see the box to the left to find out how to set one up. Apps that aren’t free can be paid for by credit card through your Zune account. The Marketplace on your phone might also include a section set up by your handset’s manufacturer which

You can now log in using your Windows Live ID, or set up a new one in Zune.

There are two ways to enjoy your favourite music on your Windows Phone.

Firstly, you can stream or download music from the Marketplace. Find artists, songs and albums you like, then just tap on a track or album and it will start streaming to your phone. Or, you can copy music to your phone’s memory. Use your PC and the Zune software to build up a collection of music on your hard drive, then plug your mobile into the computer and drag your choices over the phone icon. You’re ready to listen on the go, whether or not you have a connection. Sign up for a free 14-day Zune Pass which enables you to trial the service. See page 7 for details.

The Music & Video tile on the Start screen will take you directly to any music you’ve added to your phone and give you access to Zune’s huge collection. In addition, you can use your phone to listen to the radio, or podcasts, or to watch videos or movies. There’s an array of movies and TV shows that you can rent or buy via your Zune account, then view on your PC or your phone.

You can keep up to date with your gamer friends, and continue competing against them on your Windows Phone thanks to its Xbox LIVE® capability.

Buy compatible games like Bejeweled LIVE, Fruit Ninja, Need for Speed Undercover or The Harvest, and you can track your Achievements via your Xbox LIVE account, and set up Leaderboards to compete against friends. “London life is hectic but my Windows Phone 7 apps take the stress away...”

The thing I love about my Windows® Phone is how easy it is to get to the apps I use the most in an instant. It’s so easy to pin any app you’ve bought to the Start screen – you just hold your finger on its icon, and the option comes up to pin it.

One of my favourites is Cocktail Flow, just for the fun factor. Every Friday I send a crazy new cocktail recipe round to my workmates, before we head off to the pub to let off steam after a busy week. My recipes are getting zanier and zanier, and it’s a real laugh! Tiger Juice, anyone?

Weekends I like to get out of London and do some hiking and climbing with my girlfriend Jenny.

Snow+Rock Pathfinder is the perfect thing – last week we hit South Wales and used the phone’s GPS to track out our path. Up in the Vale of Neath, I took an incredible shot of a waterfall. Then I opened Touchnote and in 20 seconds I’d turned the photo into a postcard that I sent off to my parents. Mums always love to get cards from their sons.

After the exertions of climbing, we needed to relax and get some quality time, so I used Poynt’s excellent ‘restaurants nearby’

feature to find an incredible country pub. The best lamb shanks you ever tasted, and Jenny loved the wine. We both did.

Work, sport, girlfriend – life is busy. I nearly forgot my brother’s birthday on Monday, but luckily there’s ParcelGenie for Windows Phone. I sent him some Superman coasters for a joke. But I’ll mix him a Tiger Juice when I see him!

Windows Phone is designed to bring you closer to everyone you know and cherish. They don’t call it ‘the Facebook phone’ for nothing… ®

The Social Network One of the first things Windows® Phone will do when you turn it on is prompt you to connect to your Facebook account. This links your handset to your profile and friends, bringing a fresh slant to the very concept of what a mobile phone does.

So comprehensive is the way in which social networking has been integrated into Windows Phone that it really is no exaggeration to describe it as ‘the Facebook phone’.

Once you’ve linked to your Facebook account, the People Hub on your phone’s Start screen will begin displaying updates and images your friends have posted. For more of Facebook’s functionality – such as the ability to send private messages, answer requests or change your profile settings, the official Facebook app is the next port of call for many owners giving their brand new toy a spin. There are also apps for Twitter, LinkedIn and various other services.

Unlike other platforms, where contacts is literally a list of names and phone numbers you’ve stored in your phone, the People Hub syncs not only with Facebook, but also any email accounts you might have as well as Windows® Live. If someone’s in your Gmail contacts, is a Facebook friend and you have their number on your phone, the link button enables you to merge them into one contact. What’s more, any individual

contact can be pinned to your phone’s main screen. Just find the person in the People Hub, hold down their entry, and the option to ‘pin’ appears. It could be anyone – your mother, father, spouse, children, best friend or closest business contact.

The tile itself for each person will be ‘live’, regularly flipping over to display their pictures and latest status updates.

Having those close to you on your Start screen means their status is a glance away and with one touch you can access their entire profile and then text, email, send a message via Facebook or ring them.

If photos are your fuel, the Pictures Hub acts in much the same way. As with your contacts, the phone automatically delivers your entire roster of snaps from either Facebook or Microsoft’s SkyDrive®, all sorted into individual folders, with just one

“Two kids keep me on my toes, but friends, fashion and food are at my fingertips” boo-hoo – but a little go on mummy’s phone soon made him forget the scrapes and bruises. Kiera, our one-yearold, stared at Josh with such a cute look on her face, I just had to take a snap with the phone and send it to their dad, Brian.

When I first got this Windows® Phone, it automatically added all my Facebook friends to the People Hub and that’s been great for keeping up with my old school friends from Glasgow.

But, you know what? These days I prefer Twitter. A bunch of the other mums here in Manchester all follow each other – tweeting whenever we have five minutes – and since I added the app to my Start screen I’ve been keeping up with all their gossip and jokes. If I’m running late, sometimes I can quickly see if one of the other mums is able to pick up my Josh from school for me.

Josh is seven and old enough to handle ilomilo. He fell off his bike the other day – plenty of tears and

My food shopping’s done with Tesco Groceries. It’s great – you can create a list of regular shopping list items, and add special things (like Prosecco!) as and when.

I’m allowed a final indulgence, aren’t I? That would have to be MSN Celebrity. It’s sad, I know, but I can never get enough celeb gossip, and the Windows Phone just feeds it through to me.

How do I make calls?

What’s a Windows Live ID? If you’ve signed up with Windows® Live at www. live.com, then your Windows Live ID is the email address that you gave as your username.

You will have set that up with a password as well.

Windows® Phone can integrate with all the features Windows Live offers such as Hotmail, Messenger, SkyDrive and MSN. You might also have a Windows Live ID if you have signed up with Zune® at www.zune. com, and at the same time you’ll have created your Zunetag. Similarly if you have an Xbox® games console and have joined Xbox LIVE®, you’ll have set up a Windows Live ID alongside your Gamertag. (For more details on Zune and Xbox LIVE, turn to page 6.)

Which Windows Live ID should I use?

You might be using Zune, Xbox LIVE and Windows Live and, ideally, you’ll have used the same email address as your Windows Live ID for each. If not, to decide which Windows Live ID to use go to www. microsoft.com/ windowsphone/en-us/ WLID/index.html and use the selection wizard.

Despite the enormous range of things it can do, Windows Phone is primarily for phoning people. Hit the Telephone tile on the Start screen to make a call and then dial a number, or press the People button to choose someone from your contacts. You can go to speakerphone with the Speaker button, and make it a conference call by pressing the Add a Call button then dialling the number or selecting a contact. There’s also a Mute button so the person at the other end can’t hear you, and a Hold button with the Pause symbol on it.

What about voicemail?

If you are unable to speak on the phone but receive a call, press the Ignore button to put the caller through to your voicemail. To retrieve voicemail, press the Telephone tile and dial your mobile phone provider’s voicemail number.

What do the three buttons do?

No matter which manufacturer the handset comes from, all Windows Phone models have four physical buttons. One switches it on and off. The other three are Back, Start and Search.

Back takes you back one screen, so if you went to the Games section in the Marketplace but really wanted to look at Applications, press back to go to the main menu.

Start is the button that looks like the Windows logo. No matter where you are in an app, pressing Start takes you back to the phone’s Start screen. You can then do something new, or press Back to return to where you were in the app you were using.

Search has a magnifying glass on it, and is context sensitive. If you’re not doing anything in particular with your phone and press Search, it will open up Bing™ to perform a web search.

However, when you’re in the Music section of Marketplace and you press it, you’ll get a search bar to look for artists, albums or songs.

What are gestures?

How do I pin something to my Start screen?

The first time you press the Email tile, your phone will offer to connect to one or more email services such as Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo!. To receive email from further accounts in your Email hub, press the Email tile then the three dots … which you’ll see at the bottom right. This brings up the option to add an account. If you want to add a POP or IMAP account here, you will need not only the email address and passwords but the correct settings. These should be in the account settings on your computer, or available from your internet service provider.

What happens if I lose my phone?

If you want to pin an app to your start screen, flick to the left to go to your apps list, then flick up or down to find the one you want to pin. Touch the app’s icon and hold your finger down. A context-specific menu will come up with the options Pin to start, Uninstall and Rate and review the app. Touch Pin and it’ll be on your Start screen from now on. If you change your mind, hold its tile down on the Start screen and an Unpin icon will appear. Tap and the app will go back to where it was on your apps list.

How do I change my ringtone and background colour?

From the Start screen flick to the left and then flick your apps list up until you see Settings. Touch this and Ringtones & Sound is first on the list. Second is Theme, which lets you set the colour scheme. Play and explore with these settings in order to customise your phone.

Windows Phone has a multitouch screen. In everyday use, when you turn the phone on you’ll then want to flick the Lock screen up – the screensaver might be displaying an image from your photo collection.

Touch the screen and swipe your finger upwards. You’ll see the Start screen. If you want to open your Email hub, press the Email tile.

Perhaps you want to go to your apps instead.

From the Start screen, flick towards the left and your phone will page over to your apps list.

When you’re in a document or looking at a web page, you can zoom in by double tapping. To zoom in when you’ve got a photo on screen, place your thumb and forefinger on the screen together and move them apart to stretch the image. To zoom out again, use a pinching motion instead. Using the phone’s screen is very natural – you’ll probably get used to it within a few minutes.

How do I add my other email addresses to my phone?

It’s recommended that you register your phone as a device with Windows Live. Then if you misplace it in the house you can ring your phone from your PC. If you lose it elsewhere, you can locate it on a Bing™ map and lock it, then go and retrieve it. If you fear your phone’s been stolen you might be able to track it down, and you can also erase the data on it remotely via Windows Live. See page 6 for more information.
