Believe

Strive

Achieve

We believe in helping each pupil to realise they are truly unique and possess God-given gifts and talents which gives them unlimited potential. We wish to create an educational foundation whereby throughout their lives our pupils will always be ambitious for self-improvement and so develop beyond their perceived potential.

We strive to: • provide excellent teaching, learning and outstanding pastoral care. • provide a wealth of opportunities both curricular and co-curricular. • build a caring community based on Gospel values. • encourage pupils to be the best they can be.

By the end of their school career our pupils are: • high achievers. • happy and resilient. • ambitious and respectful. • appreciative of self and others. • equipped with a spiritual foundation, a strong moral code. • ready to become positive and life-long contributors to society.

Our Vision St Edward’s is a Catholic School, welcoming all. We are a place of learning and a community based on Christian values. We work in partnership with parents to develop the talents and interests of all the young people entrusted to us. We aim to develop each individual pupil’s potential, academically, personally and spiritually. We serve the wider community by making this education available to all, including those who cannot afford our fees, as far as we are able within our resources.

Life at the Prep School Kindergarten

Pre-Prep (Reception to Year 2)

Preparatory (Years 3-6)

Babies (12-24 months) – Little Acorns and Little Oaks: Our qualified practitioners support

Children begin their full time education in Reception. We provide a safe and secure environment extending all areas of children’s development within the seven areas of learning.

When working independently or collaboratively, our pupils are confident and competent learners, always ready to embrace the next challenge.

In our wonderful surroundings we promote exploration, self-discovery, and a curiosity towards learning. We begin to introduce a little more structure, following a curriculum based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and International Primary Curriculum (IPC). Play and exploration still play a vital part in learning.

As pupils progress through the Preparatory School, we work to ensure that they have a firm understanding of the core academic subjects and are capable of sharing and collaborating with their peers. This is achieved while still maintaining a broad curriculum of subjects including ICT, Science, Modern Foreign Languages, Drama and Technology.

the babies and toddlers’ natural curiosity by ensuring that the children have lots of scope for exploration and expression in a beautiful, inspiring environment.

Nursery (2-3 years) – Willow and Maple: Our focus in Nursery is to inspire children to have a lifelong passion for learning and exploration. Children are driven by curiosity and imagination and seek to gain a better understanding of the world around them through observation and investigation.

Pre-School (3-4 years) – Hazel and Laurel:

In Pre-School we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and integrate the IPC (International Primary Curriculum) to further develop broad and balanced learning. Our Pre-School classrooms are based in the Pre-Prep Department to ensure a smooth transition into Reception.

All children also benefit from a wonderful outdoor environment which has been designed to ignite their imagination and instil a growing sense of wonder. The children make regular use of our School Farm and Forest School Upon joining the Kindergarten, children are expected to stay on through to Reception.

Through the use of the IPC, we are able to offer exciting and imaginative topic work and the children feel included, secure and valued. In Years 1 and 2, our pupils are taught the core subjects of Literacy, Mathematics and Science and a broad range of foundation subjects. Alongside these, specialist lessons in French, Music, Computing and Swimming add an extra dimension.

Forest School & Outdoor Learning:

All children in Pre-Prep take part in Forest School sessions and use the School Farm to complement learning in the classroom. Our educational programme also involves inspiring visits to nature reserves, the seashore, farms and other local places of interest.

In Year 3, pupils are taught for most of the lessons by their class teacher in their own classroom. From Year 4, pupils are grouped by ability for English and Maths and have lessons in other classrooms with specialist teachers. From Year 5, pupils are also grouped by ability for Science. The School’s 45 acres of parkland is used to full effect with pupils using the extensive lawns and woodland for play, our Forest School programme and as a venue for all parts of the curriculum. The extensive facilities mean that a broad range of sporting activities from cross country to tennis tournaments are possible with pupils competing at local, regional and national level.

Individual Learning

The House System

The Individual Learning (IL) Department at the Prep School offers a wide range of expert support for pupils to help boost their academic progress. A proven track record of accelerated progress gives us the confidence to know we can get it right for your child.

Each child in Prep is allocated to one of three Houses, each named after a children’s author: • Blyton - House colour is blue. • Dahl - House colour is green. • Lewis - House colour is red. House Points are awarded for a variety of reasons including: achievement, effort, exemplary behaviour and kindness. Inter-House competitions are run throughout the year with various sporting competitions/matches.

After School Clubs After School Clubs are open to pupils from Reception to Year 6. There are a wide range of activities available. Clubs include a tea and are invoiced termly in arrears. Clubs such as Swim Squad where the pupils are invited to be part of a group will not incur a charge; cross-country races and other sporting events, such as School matches, will also not incur a charge. For pupils in Years 3-6, the clubs are booked on a daily basis at morning registration by pupils themselves. Prep Department clubs end at 5pm, after which time children have their evening tea. Following tea, children are taken to the Library for collection.

Lunches Healthy lunches are included in the school fees and are served in our purpose-built refectory, The Seedling. Hot meal choices include both meat and vegetarian options. Any specific dietary requirements can be catered for.

Music Music is a very exciting part of the School, and we are fortunate in having a large number of dedicated peripatetic teachers offering lessons in many musical instruments as well as musical theory. Timetables are arranged throughout the day on a rotating system so that music pupils do not miss the same subject on a regular basis.

Sport Every child has the opportunity to take part in a whole host of sports on offer at the Prep School. From Year 3 pupils are part of teams, and represent the School in many matches, galas and tournaments. Our Prep School site offers three Rugby and Football pitches, Netball and Tennis courts, running track and a Sports Hall, as well as a cricket square and nets.

Timings of the School Day

Life at Senior & Sixth Form Curriculum Lower School (Years 7-9) Life in Lower School (Year 7-9) is all about embracing new challenges and making the most of all the activities on offer at St Edward’s. All students are afforded the space and support required to allow them to thrive in our busy, but unpressurised environment. Students will study a broad and balanced curriculum, learning more about their own interests and talents as they move up through the School. With a focus on the philosophy and framework of High Performance Learning (HPL), all members of our community are encouraged to be enthusiastic, inquisitive and resilient as they develop the skills they need to become independent learners, confident in their ability to be high performers.

Upper School (Years 10-11) In Upper School students face greater challenges and responsibilities, not only academically but also on a social level. At St Edward’s we do all that we can to ensure that we provide the very best opportunities for personal growth and success. With a continued focus on the philosophy and framework of High Performance Learning

(HPL), students continue to build the cognitive competencies that lead a young person to thrive in school and in later life. All Upper School students study a core curriculum of four subjects: English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Religious Studies. Students may then may choose a further five subjects, one of which must be a Science (Biology, Chemistry or Physics). We also recommend that students include a language in their option choices. Current available optional subjects are as follows: Art & Design, Biology, Chemistry, Classical Civilisation, Computer Science, DT, Drama, Food Preparation and Nutrition, French, Geography, History, Latin, Music, Physical Education, Physics and Spanish. In addition, all students follow a PSHE course which includes Careers and Health Education together with Physical Education.

Sixth Form Our students regularly tell us that they appreciate the excellent teaching, huge variety of opportunities, freedom and responsibility they experience in our Sixth Form. Whether they have been at St Edward’s since Kindergarten, or joined us in Lower Sixth, they feel part of a busy thriving community and relish their role as leaders.

Early Drop Off: From 7:45am Registration: 8:30am Period 1: 8:55am Period 2: 9:35am Break time: 10:15am Period 3: 10:40am Period 4: 11:20am Period 5: 12:05pm Lunchtime: 12:45pm Period 6: 1:50pm Period 7: 2:30pm Period 8: 3:10pm Registration: 3:50pm Activities to 5:30pm (6:00pm on Thursdays)

Life in our Sixth Form is academically challenging. We expect our students to manage their time independently so that they can enjoy the social benefits alongside their studies. We currently offer 24 A Level subjects to choose from, as well as an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). Students entering the Sixth Form are able to select 3-4 subjects to study. The majority of students initially select four subjects, one of which is ‘discontinued’ at some point during Lower Sixth, as students select the three subjects they wish to focus on and gain an A Level qualification in. Games and an Enrichment Programme are also part of Sixth Form Curriculum.

Individual Learning

Co-Curricular Activities

Individual Learning offers a wide range of learning support for students at St Edward’s. This includes support with Literacy, Numeracy, examinations and personal organisation. We recognise that a student of any intellectual ability may have a specific learning difficulty. We provide expert, sensitive support and teaching with an excellent track record in enabling students to fulfil their potential.

A comprehensive programme of cocurricular activities and clubs (most of which are included in the school fees) take place at lunchtime and after school for students in all year groups.

Lunches Healthy lunches are included in the school fees and are served in our purpose-built refectory, The Canopy. Hot meal choices include both meat and vegetarian options, along with filled jacket potatoes. There is also a self-service salad bar, as well as a choice of freshly-made sandwiches, baguettes, bagels and wraps. Any specific dietary requirements can be catered for.

The House System Students of all Year Groups are divided into one of three Houses – Fisher, Newman and More – named after Saint John Fisher, Blessed John Henry Newman and Saint Thomas More. Where possible, siblings are placed in the same House. Heads of Year and other pastoral staff retain neutrality and remain the main point of contact for pastoral issues. During the course of the school year, students earn House Points for academic, sporting, performing arts and other achievements, culminating in Sports Day, at the end of the school year. The winning House receives the coveted ‘House Cup’.

Sport Sport St Edward’s is committed to providing sport for every child, at every level and giving them every opportunity to succeed. We run an extensive training and fixtures programme each term and are committed to each team having at least one fixture per week either during the week or on Saturdays. The St Edward’s Excellence Programme and Scholars (STEPS) is an integral part of our commitment to support and develop our most talented sporting pupils. The programme is designed to stretch and challenge our elite performers both in their physical performance and in their tactical play.

Music Music is a very exciting part of the School, and we are fortunate in having a large number of dedicated peripatetic teachers offering lessons in most musical instruments and musical theory. There are a range of musical ensembles to be part of including Choirs, Orchestra and Concert Band. Major performances held during the year include the Carol Service in Tewkesbury Abbey and the Pump Room Concert in the Spring

15

Term. Informal concerts are held after school at regular intervals throughout the year.

Drama In addition to regular curriculum Drama lessons, a main whole school production is staged during the Spring Term each year. If the project is appropriate, sometimes we offer separate Lower School and Upper School productions. Private Lessons are available in Speech and Drama, which take place before and after School and at lunchtimes. Pupils have the opportunity to pursue the Grade Examinations of The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and to take part in the Cheltenham Festival of Performing Arts.

DofE The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme (DofE) is voluntary and available to all students from Year 9 and above. Our Award programme is hugely popular and we are very proud to have one of the highest completion rates in the UK. On average 95-98% of students complete their Award, compared to the 55% national average (DofE National Statistics March 2020).

Combined Cadet Force We are proud to have a flourishing Combined Cadet Force (CCF) open to all students from Year 8 upwards. There is an Army and a Royal Air Force (RAF) Section that provides exciting opportunities for our future young leaders.
