A message from our Headmaster...

As another term filled with excitement and opportunity flies by, I am delighted to welcome you to the latest edition of Avita Pro Fide. From the classroom, to the Chapel, the music school, the sports fields and the far flung corners of the world which have been visited, there has been, as always, so much to celebrate.

I am also thrilled to share with you the glowing report we have recently received from the Independent Schools Inspectorate. For those who may have missed it, the report has been dispatched via email and is also available on our website. It is a testament to the dedication and excellence of our entire school community.

Looking ahead, this term promises to be just as dynamic and fulfilling. We have a spectacular performance of Made in Dagenham in store, showcasing the immense talent and creativity of our students. Additionally, the calendar is brimming with sports fixtures, exciting trips, and the muchanticipated Charity Week, where we come together to make a difference in the lives of others.

I extend a warm invitation to every one of you to visit us at any time. Our doors are always open, and we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to show you how much St Edmund’s has or hasn’t changed since your time. Moreover, I am delighted to announce some particularly exciting events on the horizon, including Drinks on a London Bus, our timeless tradition of the London dinner at The Star Tavern and a very special St Edmund’s Sunday later this year to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Prep School.

Within this edition, we uncover diverse alumni spotlights, offer updates on recent events, and present a wealth of additional content for your exploration and enjoyment. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories for this issue of Avita Pro Fide.

Aerial shot shows College & Prep in 1961

An unusual aerial photograph of the College taken in 1961, showing in the middle right the newly-built Godfrey Wing at the Prep School (then called St Hugh’s).

The land running southwards from the School Block and Douai Hall was used for agricultural purposes. The College was largely self-sufficient until the Second World War, and had its own orchard, vegetable plots, greenhouses, pig sties and hen houses. These have all since disappeared, with only the remnants of the orchard now still visible.

OE football match

In June 2023, the OEs returned for the annual football match. The fixture has been running for a decade and was a wonderful occasion. All students who have left the College are welcome to attend the fixture, and we will be advertising the next game soon.

Introducing our new Alumni Officer

This edition marks my first Avita Pro Fide as the new Marketing and Alumni Officer here at St Edmund’s College and Prep.

I am Megan Roberts and I have been working at St Edmund’s for just over a term and what a fun-packed term it has been! Prior to joining St Edmund’s, I was studying Business Management with a placement year at the University of Birmingham.

My university placement was spent as an Event Planner and Manager at Tobacco Dock London – where I found my love for Marketing. I am excited to put theory into practice and get involved with my Marketing and Alumni responsibilities. Alongside my studies, I've also run my own eyelash extensions business for the past 7 years.

This term has been packed full of fun with a variety of trips, lessons and of course festivities nearer to the Christmas holidays. Helping write both this edition of Avita Pro Fide and the College Life for the school has been particularly enjoyable and I hope you find the features and news interesting!

If you have any ideas on news or stories which could feature in Avita Pro Fide or have any suggestions for reunions or other Alumni events I would love to hear from you. Please contact me at: alumni@stedmundscollege.org

Calling all Old Edmundians!

We’d love to hear from you about your educational and career journeys, cherished memories from your time at St Edmund’s College, and the stories of your reunions with fellow alumni. Your stories hold a special place in our legacy. If you’re in touch with any Alumni who aren’t on social media, please spread the word so we can connect and hear their stories. In addition to this please get them to sign up to our alumni website to stay in the loop with everything St Edmund’s.

If you want to share your experiences and inspire others, send us a message on social media or email us at: alumni@stedmundscollege.org

The ghost of St Edmund

Many people thought that the presence of a car in the Ambulacrum was the work of the ghost of St Edmund who used to stroll there on the eve of St Edmund’s Day. Others attributed it to poltergeists.

For many decades John Wilton (OE 1952-60) and his friends kept secret what they had done in the late 1950’s but, some 35 years after the crime, the truth finally came out with photographs as evidence.

Now aged 82, and having just celebrated the publication of his sixth book “It’ll All Be Over By Christmas”, John thinks the time is now right for the photographs to “go home”, and he has donated them to the College.

OE News

Farah Beedle (Talbot, 2005-2012), an esteemed alumna of St Edmund’s College, recently shared heartwarming news about her

summer wedding held at the cherished College Chapel. The ceremony, a beautiful celebration on August 19th, was a testament to her fondness for the chapel where she exchanged vows with her husband, James Beedle.

Reflecting on her time at the college, Farah's journey from Talbot House, where she was House Captain from 2011 to 2012, remains a cherished chapter. Her family has deep roots at St Edmund’s, being one of four siblings to attend the College and her younger brother who is currently in Poetry!

Farah was an active participant in various aspects of college life, engaging in Model United Nations, the Schola Cantorum, and contributing her skills to the Netball team. After her tenure at St Edmund’s, she pursued Linguistics at UCL, laying the foundation for her successful career as a Marketing Executive at BBC News. Her recent wedding at the College Chapel was a poignant reminder of her strong ties to St Edmund’s, where each memory holds a special place in her heart. Her gratitude extends to Mr. Neil Kinsey for his invaluable support in organising the memorable occasion. Farah's journey stands as a testament to the vibrant legacy of our alumni, marking milestones while carrying the spirit of St Ed’s into the world.

Alberto and Thomas Moyano Bonel (St Hugh’s 1949-1953), after leaving St Hugh's, the twins headed back to Spain to finish their Baccalaureate studies in Barcelona.

Alberto graduated from the Polytechnic University Barcelona/Madrid in Industrial Engineering. He worked for 4 years in a textile research centre in Arnhem (Holland) and completed a master’s Course in "European Studies" in the renowned "College d' Europe" (Bruges, Belgium).

In 1981 he entered the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was posted successively to Khartoum (The Sudan), Nairobi (Kenya), Cairo (Egypt), Ankara (Turkey), Islamabad (Pakistan), London (UK) and Bangkok (Thailand - where he currently resides).

The wealth of experiences and anecdotes (adventures and misadventures) in the above mentioned postings have resulted in more than 20 books (in English and Spanish) describing the human touch of diplomacy, as it were. At the moment Alberto Moyano Bonel, under the pen name Charles Bonel, has 4 books published in the UK and 6 in Spain.

Thomas graduated from the Faculty of Architecture (Barcelona/ Madrid) and in 1978 he joined the European Union (Brussels) as a Spanish Fonctionnaire - Transport Directorate. Upon retiring Thomas lived in Edinburgh, but after Brexit he was forced to go back to Spain, where he resides in a manor house in the Aragon Pyrenees.

He is active in the folklore of the region (Aragon), writing over 200 articles on the subject of the traditional dance and song of Aragon - the "Jota". He was the founder of the Museum, in the township of Alerre, dedicated to traditional dresses (worldwide), paintings, engravings and art pieces. He is also an Academic of the Academy of Folklore and Music of Aragon.

Sarah-Jane Platt (Pole, 1993-1998) previously known as Sarah-Jane Quirke, shares a remarkable journey of professional transformation. After a decade immersed in the realm of educational publishing, Sarah-Jane pursued a longstanding dream, returning to university in 2018. Navigating through the challenges of the pandemic, Sarah-Jane emerged triumphant three years later, proudly achieving a 1st Class Honours in BSc Adult Nursing. Stepping into a new chapter of her career, she embarked on a fulfilling path, becoming a Registered Nurse (RN) specialising in Accident and Emergency (A&E) care. Congratulations, Sarah-Jane, St Edmund’s wishes you the very best in all your future endeavours!

Matthew Wu (Douglass, 2019-2022) recently visited the College for St Edmund’s Sunday which gave him a chance to reminisce and have a reunion with some old friends and teachers.

At the College Matthew enjoyed making friends with students from different countries, received 2 Headmaster Books, and two prizes: the D.J.K Walters International Prize in Syntax, and the International Prize in Poetry. Currently, Matthew studies Criminology at Swansea University and we wish him the best in all his endeavours!

Avita Pro Fide Autumn/Winter 2023 4

Gemma Ross (née Gemma fanning) taught at St Edmund’s College from 2017 to 2019, and served as the Head of EAL in the International Department during her tenure. Her new book was released on the 23rd November and published by The History Press in collaboration with her husband Robert Ross, focuses on 'The Carry On Girls.' This book explores the history of the famous film franchise, delving into the actresses within the films and offering a social history commentary on women from the 1950’s to the 1970’s. She recently appeared on both The Jo Good show on BBC Radio London and BBC Women’s Hour.

Angie Wu(Poynter, 2005-2007), accompanied by her mother and two children, recently revisited the College. The tour led her through familiar places—the chapel, old classrooms, and even her class photo from 2007.

In a heartfelt email after her visit, Angie shared, "We had a valuable time visiting St Ed’s— memorable and fascinating! Good to see it hasn’t changed much, yet those high-tech upgrades amazed me!"

How you can help

If you have a copy of one or more of the photographs listed above, we would like to borrow them so that we can copy them using our high-resolution image scanner. We will look after them carefully and return them to you as soon as possible.

A number of the photographs we already have are damaged or too small. Some are only black and white when we know there are colour equivalents. We would like to make better copies of these also.

College... after the Life

When were you at St Edmund’s?

2005 to 2007 for Rhetoric 1 and Rhetoric 2. I was Head Girl of Challoner House, Netball Captain and I was a full time boarder.

What are your lasting memories of your time at St Edmund’s?

So many! Hanging out with your friends in school day and night because I was a boarder. It's actually really special to live with your friends. Another is captaining the best netball team ever. We were so good, dedicated and loved the sport and it showed because we always won our matches against other schools! Also, receiving the Headmaster's Medal at the end of my time at St Edmund's was very special. I remember the Headmaster at the time saying he was giving this to me because since I arrived at the school "she threw herself into College life". It was true - I really enjoyed my time there and tried to take up every opportunity that came my way. Finally, calling St Edmund's, "Edmundia". My friends from that time and I still use that name until today.

What is your favourite and least favourite memory from the College?

Favourite - when I sang the song Summertime in the final assembly with all our parents in the crowd. Least favourite when we had to do the cross country run across a farm for the house competition!

What do you know now that you wish you knew during your time at St Edmund’s?

I wish I was brave enough to join the debate club rather than just be a spectator. It's a great skill to have to be a good orator.

Are you still in contact with anyone from your years at the College?

Yes I am! Quite a few actually and we're all doing well in our respective industries.

Did you have a favourite subject or Teacher?

I took English Literature by default. It was the way the rota worked out. I wasn't crazy about it as a subject in my last school. But coming to St Edmunds, Mr Hayes and Mr Moore really brought English Literature alive to me. I completely fell in love with the subject because of these two teachers and it's the reason I ended up studying it at the University of Birmingham as a degree.

What has been your proudest achievement to date?

This BAFTA honour is my proudest achievement. It feels special when peers and juggernauts of your industry recognise your talent and believe in you enough to say you are the future of the industry.

Can you tell us about your life after the College and your Career?

After graduating from the University of Birmingham with a 2.1 BA Honours in English, I embarked on various internships, gaining experience at Voice Newspaper, South London Press, BBC Radio London, and ITV Central. Following this, I worked as a reporter for the inaugural series of London 360 on the Community Channel. In 2012, I was chosen for the competitive ITV News Traineeship, which took me to ITV Yorkshire and ITV Westcountry for six months each before settling at ITV Meridian in Southampton. I later joined the launch team of London Live, initially on the newsdesk before transitioning to a reporter and presenter for three and a half years. Going freelance in 2017, I contributed to ITV Daytime shows like This Morning, Good Morning Britain, and Lorraine. In 2018, I worked at City Hall as a communications officer for the London Assembly before returning to freelance work split between ITV Daytime and teaching video journalism. Since 2021, I've been a full-time Features Producer at Good Morning Britain, currently on secondment to Lorraine. I was recently announced as a BAFTA Breakthrough Talent for 2023. I'm one of 20 in the UK and 1 of 42 globally.

Do you have any advice for current Edmundians?

Three things: 1. Stay close to God. If you trust in Him he will have your back all the way. 2. Hard work, consistency and persistence beats talent every day of the week. 3. Take the 7th period in the school day seriouslyit's a great time to build yourself outside of academics and learn a new skill. You won't get that amazing opportunity again.

St Edmund's Day 2023 - a thrilling day of activities

We're excited to share the events that took place in the College during this year’s St Edmund’s Day.

The day commenced with a whole College Mass held in the Chapel, setting the tone for reflection and unity among our students. Following this, a timetable-free day enabled a variety of engaging activities, while a lavish Feast of St Edmund’s during lunchtime treated everyone to a delightful spread of culinary delights.

The College also had their first ever ‘Winter Sports Day’. Despite the autumnal weather, ourstudents enthusiastically participated in a range of inter-house competitions, spanning from rugby and hockey to chess and e-sports, showcasing an incredible display of house spirit. Our College Orchestra and Choir performed in an evening concert, featuring John Rutter's Requiem, leaving an indelible mark on all in attendance and finishing the day on a high note.

We're incredibly grateful for the overwhelming enthusiasm shown by both students and staff, a testament to the significance of St Edmund’s Day in our school calendar and the warmth it holds in our collective hearts.

St Edmund’s Day perfectly encapsulated the essence of our College—blending tradition with modernity, honouring our history while embracing the vibrancy of our present, and showcasing the unity and spirit that define our beloved College.

News from the College

There were a wide range of activities taking place, as well as lots of hard work and Christmas festivities. Take a look at our Prep and College photo montage that captures some of these moments.

Foundation Day

The College and Prep marked Foundation Day on Friday 29 September 2023.

Founded on Michaelmas Day, 1568, in Douai, northern France, our College has a profound connection with the challenges and resilience of the Catholic faith during penal times in England. Bishop John Sherrington joined us to celebrate Mass with the entire College community. The occasion was made even more special with the attendance of our governing body, led by Chair of Governors, Deacon Paul Raynes, as well as Mr Peter Sweeney, Director of Education for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Westminster.

The servers demonstrated professionalism and grace as they carried out their duties during Mass. The Schola Cantorum, under the direction of Andrew O'Brien, led us in our traditional Edmundian Hymns.

The celebrations served as a poignant reminder of the values that guide the College, excellence in education, resilience in the face of adversity, and a strong sense of faith and community, and our responsibility to carry these values forward, inspiring future generations to embrace knowledge, integrity, and compassion.

New photographs of the College

We recently had some beautiful dusk shots taken of the College. These new photos offer a fascinating comparison to old ones, including images of the main building from the late 1860’s and the Chapel from the 1890’s. It's incredible to see how our College’s landscapes and iconic structures have retained their charm and character over time.

St Edmund’s Sunday 2023

St Edmund’s College was originally founded as the English College at Douai in northern France in 1568, and was re-established at Old Hall Green in Hertfordshire on 16 November 1793. As this happened to be the Feast Day of St Edmund, Archbishop of Canterbury (1174-1240), the school came under his patronage.

Every year since then, to mark the anniversary, the College commemorates St Edmund’s Day on the 16th, or in more recent years, on the weekday closest to it. Since 1863, during the preceding three days, the students all come together for a Triduum (three-day religious observance) to sing all thirty verses of the College anthem O Beate mi Edmunde

Starting in 1974, Old Edmundians have had their own celebration normally on the Sunday closest to 16 November. This arrangement began because many OEs were finding it increasingly difficult to visit the College on a weekday.

Last year’s event took place on Sunday 19 November and was, as always, a great occasion for people to come together and meet old friends and teachers. This time we welcomed quite a few OEs who had not been back to the College for many decades and for some it was the first return since leaving.

The day started with High Mass in the College Chapel. OEs often remark that this is the one place at St Edmund’s that never seems to change. There followed a drinks reception in the Ambulacrum at which the Headmaster took the opportunity to apprise those gathered about the school’s contemporary successes. An excellent buffet lunch was served in the Myers and Bourne Rooms. It was decided this year to make lunch less formal than the sitdown Sunday roast of recent years. This enabled visitors to mix and socialise between courses. Coffee and tea were then served in the Ambulacrum and tours of the College were hosted by some of the Prefects.

Save the date

This year’s event is being held on Sunday 17 November 2024, which is the Feast Day of St Hugh, patron saint of the Prep School. Coincidentally this will also be the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Prep. We expect that a larger number of OEs than normal will want to visit to mark the occasion.

Tim Fuller

It is with great sadness that we announce the recent death of Tim Fuller OE, who passed away suddenly at home in October.

Attending St Edmund’s between 1967 and 1972, Tim was initially in Challoner before becoming a founder member of Poynter in 1970. His brothers Simon (RIP 2005), David and Anthony also attended St Edmund’s. Tim started his professional life as a civil servant, at one stage being responsible for the Prime Minister’s security arrangements at Downing Street. Later on he took up a post at the Institute of Civil Engineers before his retirement a few years ago. Tim had been a committee member of the Edmundian Association since 2000, and was for a time its membership secretary.

A memorial service for Tim was held at the College on 25 November 2023 attended by his relatives, Old Edmundians, former colleagues, friends and representatives of the Samaritans, a charity for which Tim volunteered over the last two decades.

The service was live-streamed for the benefit of those around the world who could not be there in person. It was followed by a reception at The Feathers in the nearby village of Wadesmill.

Timothy (Tim) Christopher Fuller was born in Winchester, Hampshire, on 24 September 1953 and died in Hertford on 11 October 2023 at the age of 70. May he rest in peace.
