Angela is a lifelong resident of Gladwin. She graduated from Gladwin High School and earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Alma College. Angela is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Gladwin, Gateway Community Band and Assistant Manager at Chemical Bank. In her spare time Angela loves to garden and travel.

Gladwin County is an unique place to live, work, and grow a business. Whether you’re visiting for the day, looking for a new place to call home, or you’re already a resident of our thriving communities, Gladwin County consists of quaint little towns with big hearts and plenty of opportunities. Our rich county history contributes to the nuances which creates the “Norman Rockwell” environment that is loved by many. The Chamber was established to advocate and support the prosperity of Gladwin County and area businesses. It is an exciting time to be a member of the Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce. We are always creating new networking and promotional opportunities to help our member businesses succeed and grow, including space to advertise on the Chamber website, business referrals, networking opportunities, legislative breakfasts and continuing education. We continue to partner with local government and other organizations to pursue improvements in the overall quality of life for the city, county, and region, particularly in the areas of transportation, education, healthcare, tourism, economic development, community development, and workforce development. Jessica Aman is a Gladwin High School graduate and earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Central Michigan University. She is the owner of Merrily Ever After Bridal Shop located on Main Street in Gladwin. This shop gives brides a unique private shopping experience and personal attention that all brides deserve when searching for the perfect dress. Jessica also serves on the local Junior Achievement board and volunteers in the classroom with her young son, Philip.

MICHAEL MURRAY Treasurer, Burkhart-Presidio Insurance

Michael was born and raised in Gladwin County. He graduated from Beaverton High School and earned his Bachelor Degree from Alma College. Michael is a producer at Burkhart-Presidio Insurance, is involved in the GBPA, and spends his free time playing golf.

MEGHAN KEEN Secretary, Mid Michigan College

Meghan is a lifelong resident of Gladwin, Michigan and attended Saginaw Valley State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in graphic design with double minors in marketing and management. Meghan is currently the Director of Marketing & PR at Mid Michigan College. Meghan is a member of Gladwin Rotary Club. She enjoys gardening, spending time with her family, friends and their three adorable German Short-Haired Pointers.

BOB BALZER Director,

Michigan Works! Region 7B / Gladwin County Economic Development Corporation

Bob is a graduate of Gladwin High School and received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Central Michigan University. He worked in the banking industry for 18 years prior to joining Michigan Works! Region 7B and the Gladwin County EDC in 2012. Bob enjoys camping with his family, hunting, fishing and the outdoors, and positively impacting the lives of youth.

CORY BARZ Director, Clare County Transit

Cory was born and raised in Gladwin, graduated from Mid Michigan College and later CMU, and taught in the Lansing area for six years before an opportunity arose to return to Gladwin. He is currently serving as Operations Manager at the Clare County Transit. Cory and his wife April are looking forward to becoming more invested and involved in the business community of Gladwin.

Dawn is the Broker/Owner of 989 Real Estate LLC and has been serving Gladwin County with their real estate needs for over 12 years. She is a lifelong resident of Gladwin County and is proud to make Gladwin her home with her husband and son.

BECOME A CHAMBER AMBASSADOR Program Outline The Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Program is structured to help you meet new people, discover the many businesses in the area, build deeper connections through networking opportunities, and enhance your communication skills as you serve as a liaison between the Chamber and the community.

CHAMBER AMBASSADOR PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT Chamber Ambassadors serve to welcome new businesses and individuals to the community, act as official Chamber representatives, and promote and enhance the reputation of the Chamber to the communities it serves.

CHAMBER AMBASSADOR PROGRAM STRUCTURE The Chamber Ambassador Program is governed by a Chair and Vice-Chair who are elected annually.

BECOMING A CHAMBER AMBASSADOR Individuals interested in becoming a Chamber Ambassador must be a current Chamber member or a representative of a current Chamber member business. Acceptance into the Chamber Ambassador Program is contingent upon an in-person casual interview with the Chamber’s Executive Director.

EXPECTATIONS Serving as a Chamber Ambassador includes attending events that occur at various times. It is important that prior to making the commitment to serve as a Chamber Ambassador, you discuss the following expectations with your employer to ensure that you will be able to attend events and assist the Chamber with a reasonable schedule.

ENROLLMENT If you are interested in serving as an Ambassador for the Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce, please contact the office to request an application form. Once your application has been reviewed, you will complete an Ambassador Commitment form to be recognized as an official member of the Chamber’s Ambassador Committee.

Come play in Michigan’s Backyard at the New Rotary Splash Park! The NEW Rotary Splash Park located at Beaverton Ross Lake Park is a highlight to all residents and visitors. It was with the fundraising efforts of the Rotary Club of Gladwin, the City of Beaverton, the many local businesses and residents who donated to see this park completed in September of 2019. The unusually warm weather allowed the children of Gladwin County to have fun before it was winterized. This summer the fencing and gateway will be completed on the Rotary Splash Park with the ongoing fundraising for Phase Two of the project. The Rotary Splash Park in 100% free for families and children to enjoy during the summer months at Ross Lake Park.

The Gladwin County Community Branding Board who felt that this marketing plan will answer the many questions of visitors who wonder, why do people love to live here? What is there to offer here for young adults? Entrepreneurs? What is there to do in Gladwin County? A film crew has been busy throughout the year capturing the essence of the outdoor recreation, economic growth with local businesses, and events to answer those questions. Manufacturing Be Innovative. HONORING INNOVATIONS & LEADERSHIP The Beaverton Activity Center honors four “Catalysts” of the local plastics industry. Countless significant plastics innovations began in our own backyard, thanks to the imagination and hard work of four local men – men who not only understood how to transform the plastics production process, but were CATALYSTS in their own right in birthing a new industry. Each with his own talents, these men took Depression-era resourcefulness and turned their curiosity into ideas which became innovations that remain the foundation of plastics industry processes today. Fred Robinson, Miles Kalahar, Gaylord Brown and Bill Oberloier fed on each other’s passion to build the industry. Their optimism and confidence were keys to their success, and the adaptability, persistence and collaboration they displayed is still integral to the products, machines and companies they created.

Gladwin County Manufacturing For decades manufacturing has been the solid rock that Michigan has relied upon as an economic driver. And for decades, Gladwin County has been a manufacturing powerhouse, anchored primarily by the plastics and silicone companies that dot the landscape and those that play supporting roles. According to a Georgetown University study, there will be 55 million job openings in the economy through 2020: 24 million openings from newly created jobs and 31 million openings due to baby boomer retirements. In 2019, Michigan’s manufacturing base made up 19% of the economy, while Gladwin County typically runs slightly above the State average. Economic developers and educators are looking at those numbers and the future of manufacturing and asking what does it mean for tomorrow. One answer lies in the creation of a new STEM lab to be developed at Beaverton Schools. The new lab is aimed at technologies to compliment the jobs in the manufacturing sector of the community. According to the same study, by 2020, 65 percent of all jobs in the economy will require postsecondary education and training beyond high school. This new lab will help to meet training for many skills by providing real-life, hands-on learning applications. And with that learning comes national credentialing and learning that can then ladder into existing and modified occupational programs at MidMichigan College.

Gladwin Community Schools recently unveiled a Marshall Plan grant project of their own. In partnership with Career Technical Education and the Clare/Gladwin RESD, the school underwent a significant modification and upgrade to learning technology to compliment the automotive repair industry. The $527,000 investment offers state of the art learning leading to real-world application and jobs right here and in the region. There is much work to be done as we strive to develop skills sets to match the local and regional needs. However, by bringing business and industry together with learning partners at all levels, and through strong local economic development and community support, our businesses are poised for future growth and a bright future. FROM DISCOVERING NEW HOBBIES TO LEARNING NEW SKILLS, MID OFFERS IT ALL. Mid Michigan College continues adding to the variety of lifelong learning classes that are offered to surrounding communities. In the fall of 2016, the College reinvigorated these classes that focus on what community members are interested to learn and experience. One of the most successful offerings, Artistic Welding, is often available every semester and community members continue to catch the welding bug! “I always wanted to learn to weld, but I never had access to the equipment or an instructor,” said Jackie Gilliam, a Gladwin resident and owner of Cedar Creek, who has taken Artistic Welding several times. “This class gave me the opportunity to learn and meet others with the same artistic interests.” Over the course of five sessions, students transform collected junk, old tools, and yard sale finds into artistic treasures. New life is given to old things and artistic potential is unlocked. The class covers various techniques including the use of plasma cutters, acetylene torches, and MIG welding. Finished projects range from silverware dragonflies to large-scale sculptures. Many successful community partnerships with organizations like Michigan State University Extension, and local businesses like Cedar Creek and Studio 154 (Sanford) have allowed the College to broaden the types of classes offered. From Winter Blast to Basic Dog Training, and Birding 101 to Custom Porch Signs, Mid is able to schedule a wide variety of topics that appeal to a wide range of audiences. “We are excited to continue the expansion of our lifelong learning opportunities,” noted Scott Mertes, Vice President of Community Outreach & Advancement. “Local community members can take advantage of classes close to home and partnerships with local organizations and businesses can be developed to benefit all involved.”

With more than 200 employees, volunteers, physicians and other personnel, the Medical Center in Gladwin provides patients with access to a full continuum of health care services normally found only in much larger communities. With 24-hour emergency care, the Medical Center’s specialized inpatient units include medical and surgical care, with support by the Medical Center’s hospitalist program. Outpatient services include mammography, bone density, X-ray services, diagnostic imaging, infusion services, nuclear medicine, laboratory services, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scanning and MRI, as well as a sleep disorders lab. The Medical Center campus features a waterfall in a gardenlike setting reflective of MidMichigan’s emphasis on humanistic care. JEEPERS TAKE NOTICE The 9th Annual Jeep Creep will be held on October 23-25, 2020. As one of the highlighted events in Gladwin County it features music Friday and Saturday night at Riverwalk Place. In 2019 the Jeep Creep had almost 700 Jeeps from all over Michigan, the Midwest and Canada. The Jeepers have the opportunity to participate in the Challenge Course created by Rocks & Valleys located at Graff of Gladwin’s parking lot. The event is FREE for spectators and kid-friendly.

7th Annual Vintage Snowmobiles Snowmobiles hit the track January 11, 2020 and February 8, 2020. Drivers can register from 8 am - 10 am; or for the show from 8 am - 12 noon. There will be Hot Laps from 10 am - 11:15 am, and Racing starts at 12 noon. There is a free Swap Meet at 8 am. Admission to the event is $5. There will be several different classes featured in the races. Cost to register is $10 for Kitty Cat and 120; and $25 for all other classes. Bring the family! Concessions will be available. 2020 Dick Berg Memorial Rodeo Bring the family to see the rodeo! Gladwin County Fair Association and Super Kicker Rodeo Company presents, the 29th Annual Dick Berg Memorial Rodeo! 4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION The celebration starts days before the 4th of July in Beaverton. The crowning of Miss Beaverton Pageant kicks off the celebration. The children’s games at Ross Lake Park, is an annual activity that gives children the opportunity to experience oldfashioned carnival style games to win cherished prizes. The 4th of July Parade is one of the largest parades in Central Michigan. The finale of the 4th of July Celebration are the ever-exciting, booming and flaring fireworks display that residents and visitors come from miles around to ooo and ahh in delight.

HOLIDAY HUNT When the hunters in your family take to the woods during the opening weekend of rifle season, you take to the streets of Beaverton to hunt your own game on November 2020. The Holiday Hunt is a community-wide event in Beaverton that offers raffles, discounts at local businesses, lunch specials and local craft shows. The fun continues with hayrides and door prizes for visiting businesses. The event is sponsored by the Beaverton Area Business Association to promote local businesses, shop local and save local.

CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING The holidays are ushered in starting with a Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration on December 4, 2020 at Ross Lake Park, presented by Beaverton Area Business Association. This is a tradition for many families in our County and many kids line up to see Santa! The band will play carols, the townspeople will sing and the town will light up their trees for the season!

THUNDER ON THE STRIP Thunder on the Strip, August 15 and 16, 2020, is one of Gladwin’s premiere events, pitting some amazing cars against one another to see who owns the strip. This family fun event is held at the Gladwin Zettel Memorial Airport in May each year. Friday Test & Tune and Saturday Drag Racing! You have an opportunity to bring your car out on the strip and show off what it can do in an 1/8 of a mile!

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS PARADE The Gladwin County 18th Annual Festival of Lights Christmas Parade, as well as the Tree Lighting, takes place on December 5, 2020 at 6 pm in Gladwin. Gladwin County Airports GLADWIN ZETTEL MEMORIAL AIRPORT (GDW) Gladwin Zettel Memorial Airport in Gladwin County is both a jewel for travelers and county citizens. The airport is the gateway airport to Northern Michigan recreation. Gladwin County has state and national forest land, lakes and rivers, ORV and snowmobile trails, and superb hunting and fishing spots. Your choice of new and recently remodeled motels, hotel and spa, antique shops and numerous restaurants are only one to two miles from the airport. Three courtesy cars are available 24/7 and you are welcome to keep them for overnight use. Gladwin Zettel Memorial Airport is a major contributor to Gladwin County businesses and directly impacts a large percentage of the jobs in this county of 25,500 yearround residents.

Companies often use GDW as a base to visit their locations throughout a six-county area. There are also a few ultralight aircrafts based at GDW. For those who like turf, GDW has 15/33, a 2,580’ x 150’ runway. GDW has selfserve 100LL and Jet A fuel available 24/7, and assisted/full service during regular business hours seven days per week. GDW holds several popular fly-in breakfasts each year – in the airport pavilion – some feature WWII war birds, and rides are often available. Breakfasts often coincide with events at the Gladwin County Fairgrounds, which are located adjacent to the airport and are used throughout the year for festivities such as the antiques snowmobile races, and of course the county fair.

Michael Myers, was born in about 1795 in Maryland, and as a child, moved with his family who settled in Stark County, Ohio. Michael married Eve McCoy in Ohio. A son Joseph was born in Stark County, in 1830. Joseph grew up to be a farmer in Ohio and married Margaret Sawvel/Sawvell. She was the daughter of Jacob Sawvel and Soloma “Sarah” Anthony. Joseph and Sarah had 12 children, one of which was Ralph Myers. Born in Coe, Isabella County, Michigan in 1857, Ralph continued his father’s farming occupation. Ralph married Ella Foutch, the daughter of David D. Foutch and Alice VanConant. Of this family, Floyd Myers was born. Here is the rest of the Myers family story: Floyd Myers was born in Shepherd, Michigan in 1887 where he graduated from high school, then continued his education at Central Michigan College (?) at Mt. Pleasant, MI. He was one of the earliest athletes in their newly formed athletic program. After graduating from Central, he continued his education by entering the Ontario Veterinary School in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he graduated in 1912. It was in 1913, that this young man, Floyd Myers, who was fresh out of veterinary school, came to Gladwin to start a new life, and what a legacy he has left behind. A legacy not just for his family, but for the town and county of Gladwin. We know the business today as Myers for Tires, located on M-61 on the east side of the town of Gladwin, where most of us have had some sort of service performed on our cars. Over 104 years, this family has been performing service for this community and they have worn many different hats in doing so. In 1914, he married Sylvia Kirk, daughter of Louis Kirk and Barbara Harbough and they were blessed with three children. Only two, however, survived beyond infancy. For 36 years, his veterinarian business thrived on the main street of Gladwin. But during that time I guess you could say he was involved in several noteworthy community functions, such as his election for Sheriff of Gladwin County from 1922 until 1928, then in the 1930s he was elected as the town Mayor of Gladwin, for two terms. Dr. Myers also spent many years as a member of the Michigan State Board of Veterinary Medicine Examiners wherein standards of practice are established for future doctors of this profession. Oh yes, his veterinarian business was still surviving, but he saw a need for a different type of service for a different type of travel which by 1930 had become very popular. The automobile was everywhere, so in 1930, Floyd Myers opened his first automobile service station. In 1932, he began to expand his business by adding gas pumps and installing the county’s first hydraulic lift (hoist). By this time, his son Ralph was also involved in the business allowing Floyd more time for his own activities. In 1942, the business started selling Firestone tires. Oh! Before I forget, let me add that he was not done with his civic duties. In 1946, he was

elected as supervisor from his local ward where he lived and stayed on at that position until 1948. In was in 1949 when Floyd Myers passed away suddenly from a known heart ailment at the young age of 61. But by this time, Ralph Myers proved to be a “chip off the old block”. With the veterinarian business now gone, the automobile service business thrived. But it seems Ralph also enjoyed his father’s interest in civic activities. In 1942, Ralph was elected Mayor of Gladwin, and at age 25 was the youngest mayor in Michigan at that time. What other activities did Ralph have? Well, he had just a couple. He was a past president and secretary of the Gladwin Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Michigan Tire Dealers Association, past Secretary of the Gladwin Area Hospital Board of Directors, and served for one term on the Michigan Community College Board of Education….wow! But I just had to catch my breath because I’m not done. He also served on the Gladwin City Housing Commission. He was a past President of the Gladwin Rotary Club and received their Paul Harris Fellowship Award in 1980. He was a member of the St. Paul Episcopal Church and was a member of its Board of Trustees. He also was a member of the Shriners, the Masonic Lodge and the I.O.O.F. Lodge. Yea, just a couple of civic and social pastimes. Ralph passed on August 30, 1987, at the age of 71 years, after a short illness, but the business continues to live on. Joseph Myers, son of Ralph, grandson of Floyd, took over the business in 1978. Myers for Tires and the Myers family have spent the last 90 years servicing the needs in our community. The location at Cedar Avenue in the middle of the business district was in need of expansion, Joe recognized the growth. In 1984, Joe moved his business to its current location on E. Cedar and Industrial Dr. on the eastern part of the town of Gladwin and it’s still doing business at that location today. Myers for Tires and the Myers family have spent the last 90 years expanding their operation and contributing to the economic growth in Gladwin county. Easily you can see how this Myers family helped to shape the town and county of Gladwin. A big thank you to the Myers family, and their ongoing civic participation in this community. They will have a celebration the first week in August 2020, join Joe and his staff in the celebration.
