At the base of the ski area, there are even more activity choices in the summer than the winter. Discover an extensive network of mountain biking trails, explore one of the many hiking trails, or hang out with the kids at the Burgess Creek “beach” where you can put your toes in sand, mountainstyle. The Land Up Activities adventure zone at the base area includes mini-golf, a climbing wall, summer tubing lanes, ropes course, trampolines, mini-boats, bounce house, and definitely don’t miss the Outlaw Mountain Coaster—a little downhill action to tide you over until winter.

Celebrate Steamboat’s ranching tradition at the Steamboat Pro Rodeo, at the Brent Romick Rodeo Arena smack dab in the middle of downtown Steamboat. The rodeo has been a tradition since before the town was incorporated over 100 years ago. The rodeo continues to thrive every Friday and Saturday evening from mid-June to mid-August with PRCA-sanctioned competitions during the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series with additional events from pro bull riding and team penning to team roping throughout the summer.

Use anything from newer table and floor lamps with rechargeable batteries to string lights and candles. “I like concrete planters in a mix of colors, sizes and different heights. New upholstery or even just new pillows are an easy way to change and update your space without having to spend money on new furniture. We’ve been doing a lot of bold colors like orange, red, navy and gold this season,” Jamison says. How does YVMC manage being in a remote location? “One of the great things about being part of the UCHealth family is our improved access to technology and innovative care. Take telestroke, for example. Through this new technology at YVMC, our emergency department physicians can have a neurologist on a screen in minutes to assist with diagnosing stroke in patients, something where time is certainly of the essence. In the first seven months, telestroke was used with 32 patients; while seven of those patients transferred to a higher level of care, the other 25 patients were able to stay locally for care, saving them time and money and keeping them close to home. The next thing we’re focusing on is expanding our telemedicine programs. This will allow us to offer our services to rural surrounding communities, in addition to connecting our patients to specialists in Denver.”

How is YVMC active in the Steamboat community? “YVMC has a long history of supporting the Steamboat community, and that hasn’t changed. In September 2018 in partnership with the Craig-Scheckman Family Foundation, we announced a five-year, $1.375 million commitment to support mental and behavioral health resources in Routt County schools. We support a multitude of local non-profit organizations, especially when they align with UCHealth’s mission to improve lives.”

“People often get confused between a design style and a trend,” says Chancie Keenan, Principal Architect and Owner of Steamboat Springs-based Mountain Architecture Design Group (MADG). “Clients will tell us they want a certain style and then they’ll show us photos of something else entirely. It can be a little tricky.” Keenan has lived in Steamboat since 2002 and worked with MADG since 2006 on many public, residential and Historic Preservation Projects, so she has a wide scope on Steamboat architecture, past and present. “One of the most important design considerations is not to try to mimic the past. It’s important to differentiate the time periods,” she says. “But it’s also important to maintain a sense of place.” When it comes to place, what defines Steamboat’s architecture style? “From the more utilitarian log cabin and the old craftsman bungalows downtown to the return of mid-century modern design, it’s all over the board,” Keenan says. “I have a client right now that wants a windmill and a silo to remind her of her Midwestern roots, so we’re trying to figure out a contemporary way to incorporate those elements into a mountain house. That is a first.”

The long list of reasons so many people want to relocate to Steamboat Springs just got longer. Everyone knows about the epic skiing, the ranching history, and the close-knit community that separates it from other more transient resort towns. But what people might not realize, at least until they do a little bit of research, is Steamboat Springs is also known for its superior public schools.

Steamboat Springs School District (SSSD) was ranked third in the State of Colorado based on the 2018 state assessment results by the Colorado Department of Education. The assessment is based on academic achievement, academic growth, college and workforce readiness. The quality of its school system is a part of the reason there’s been a trend for people from bigger cities whose jobs are “location neutral” to want to move to Steamboat.

It’s not just about strong academics but exceptional programming in arts, music, science, and of course, athletics.

“There is evidence that people who are looking for a mountain lifestyle for their families are moving to Steamboat,” says Brad Meeks, Superintendent, SSSD. “We’ve definitely seen that trend, and part of what’s driving that is our school district’s state ranking and the numerous awards and distinctions we’ve received in recent years.” One or more of the district’s schools have received the John Irwin Award for exceptional academic achievement every year since its inception in 2010. The district also received the English Language Proficiency Act Excellence Award (ELPA) in 2015, 2017, and 2018. “Not only is that a big honor, but it says a lot about what our schools are achieving,” Meeks says. Steamboat Springs High School offers advanced placement courses and concurrent enrollment classes at Colorado Mountain College to enhance college preparedness. “Our students are getting a great education and are absolutely competitive with students from around Colorado and the rest of the country in terms of opportunities after high school.”

athletics. “The district works very closely with various partner organizations to make sure our students have access to a wide variety of activities and opportunities people might not expect from a small town or rural area,” Meeks says. SSSD students attend statewide science Olympiads, drama conferences, and compete at a high level in school sports and with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, which is renowned for producing many Olympic athletes. Meeks points out that the success of the school district would not be possible without the support of the community, who have approved a significant amount of public funding for education infrastructure and maintenance for everything from the high school sports field renovation and replacing the HVAC system in the Steamboat Springs Middle School to approving a sales tax that supports an education fund that pays for additional teachers and allows class sizes to be relatively low. “If you follow school finance in Colorado you’ll find many school districts aren’t able to keep up with expensive maintenance projects because so much money is being withheld by the state when they aren’t able to balance their budget,” Meeks says. “The Yampa Valley community has proven it supports the school district again and again.” There is also a lot of family involvement, not just on the part of parents but also grandparents who are moving to Steamboat to retire and are volunteering in the schools. “Parents and grandparents here are incredibly involved in their children’s and even their grandchildren’s education. It’s very intergenerational,” Meeks says. “It’s about people who are not only supporting their own child but the whole community, supporting each other. In many ways, that’s what Steamboat is all about.”
