A Guide to Steamboat’s Happy Hour Hot Spots

Let’s be honest: sometimes the best part of a ski day is what happens after it’s over, the way a cold beer tastes when your cheeks are still flush with the cold, your tired legs can relax, and you can finally catch up with friends who tend to ski too fast. That might be why après ski is as integral a part of ski culture as catching the first chair on a powder day or stopping for a hot chocolate when it’s cold. Here’s our list of Steamboat’s hottest spots for après ski—even if you didn’t actually ski.

Slopeside

The most obvious place to start is Ski Time Square, where ski boots are still going to be the most acceptable style of footwear. Click off your skis and slide right into Slopeside Grill, aptly named for its prime location right on the slopes, but still stumbling distance from the base. Here you’ll fi nd more than a dozen beers on tap and cocktails that can be purchased by the pitcher. There’s also a sizable wine list including a hearty selection of bubbly and you can even buy the kitchen staff a 6-pack for $8. Happy hour deals abound in addition to all those bar food favorites you’re craving after a long day on the slopes, from burgers and wings to handmade pizzas. // slopesidegrill.com

TBar

Located right below the base of the Thunderhead lift, the TBar is a Steamboat après institution. The self-proclaimed “fi ve-star dive bar” is a refreshing throwback to old school Steamboat. Get your après on local style with creative cocktails, plenty of beer, tasty wine and a menu featuring “classic and international ski cuisine” with everything from Swiss Rosti to a peanut butter banana bacon panini. For those who mean business, there’s a menu of shot specials where geter-done drinkers can down the hard stuff for only $5.

The Paramount

If you want to start a little early, say over brunch, swing by The Paramount for S@#^ on a Shingle (corned beef hash with gravy and eggs on toast) and a Bellini, as well as a full brunch menu with a creative spin on traditional favorites. Après ski lasts until 3 p.m. but with cocktails like Bloody Marys, Mimosas, and Greyhound Punch, it’s the perfect spot for a little day drinking. Also serving salads, soups, baskets of fries and a variety of sandwiches, it’s a great place for a boozy lunch, too.

Los Locos

If happy hour and Mexican food are synonymous in your ski vacay vocabulary, get crazy and head over to Los Locos where the tacos are next-level—from ancho chili braised beef and blackened tuna to battered mahi and marinated pork, there are over a dozen varieties to choose from. Ditto for the cocktail menu, with its elevated margaritas including strawberry basil, pineapple jalapeño and watermelon. During cocktail hour, nachos are only $5, and tacos, drafts and margs are $1 off—now that’s a language we can all understand.

Routtie’s BBQ

Named for Routt County locals, Routtie’s BBQ is all about fueling your inner fi re with low and slow pecan smoked Colorado meats served with a secret BBQ sauce. With daily happy hour specials, a full bar and Colorado craft beers on tap, there are plenty of options to choose from to wash it all down. Just steps from the lifts in Torian Plum Plaza, with a patio facing the slopes to soak up the sun, it’s a greatplace to stop for that long lunch that (oops) might extend into après.

With its brand-new base area plaza, you can bet Steamboat Square will be hopping all winter long with options new and old. Sit next to the roaring fi re and soak in the views from the deck at Timber & Torch, where you’ll have front row seats to the new Skeeter’s Rink and Gondola Stage, or enjoy their version of al fresco dinning when they roll up the doors and bring the outdoors inside. Wash down bistro-inspired, Steamboat themed items such as the Ski Town U.S.A. burger with a wide variety of craft beers and creative cocktails.

Truffle Pig

With a name like Truffle Pig, you know you’re going to fi nd creative cocktails, including three different spins on traditional drinks like Old Fashioned and the Manhattan. demand and low inventory may be holding our market relatively steady, however we are seeing a slight return to a more balanced and normal market. Price reductions are becoming more common and properties aren’t selling right out of the gate, re fl ected in the graphs below. Yet the market remains strong with

When Ron Southworth’s daughter lost her leg during a battle with cancer, he received a fast track education in adaptive sports. “She never skied before and only knew skiing on one leg, and she would make me ski on one ski, too,” he says. “It gave my daughter a real sense of accomplishment. And the relationships we formed and the bond we shared with other families who were going through similar challenges was wonderful.”

has devoted the last 25 years to working with adaptive athletes. “I began volunteering for an adaptive program with the National Sports Center for the Disabled in ’96 and immediately fell in love with it,” he says. Southworth found his “home on the range,” at the Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports (STARS) Ranch, where he lives with his wife and eight horses and runs programs for the non-pro fi t organization year-round.

WHERE IT STARTED

Founded in 2007 by a group of parents, ski instructors, and management from Steamboat Ski Corporation to provide improved winter recreational opportunities for people with disabilities, STARS’s mission is to empower and enrich lives through adaptive recreational activities. In 2010, STARS was contracted by Steamboat Ski Corporation to be the exclusive operator of all winter adaptive lessons and programs for the Steamboat Ski Area. Since then, STARS has grown to offer year-round programming including skiing, cycling, therapeutic horseback riding, kayaking and many other activities to empower people with disabilities. “I was the very fi rst instructor they

ever hired. They didn’t even have an of fi ce yet, and interviewed me in a library conference room,” Southworth says. “I’m the only one still here from the original crew.” During his tenure, Southworth has been an integral part of the organization’s tremendous growth. The mission remains the same, “Over the years we’ve been able to help many people realize that their life isn’t over, even after a traumatic event. They can still ski, ride a bike, and recreate outdoors,” he says. “It might be different, but they can still do it. I’ve had students who told us they were contemplating suicide, and we saved them by helping them put their life back together. It’s wonderful.”

WHAT’S OFFERED

STARS offers a wide variety of programming in the winter including all access programs at Steamboat Ski Resort for local kids and adults, Special Olympics trainings, camps for veterans and blind skiers, as well as cross country skiing and snowshoeing at Haymaker. In the summer, there’s opportunity for a wide variety of activities for kids, teens, and adults with camps that offer hiking, biking, paddle boarding, swimming, tennis, and a therapeutic horse program.

Perhaps the most exciting development during Southworth’s tenure is the opening of the STARS ranch in 2020, a $6 million property featuring a 27-bed lodge on 9-acres that boarders open space. In 2021, the property that STARS used for the Therapeutic Horse program became available. “When this property came up for sale, a gracious donor bought it with the caveat that my wife and I move in and take care of it,” he says. This 35-acre property called the Zen Ranch, is where Ron and his wife call home and care for the 8 horses that STARS uses in their program. The property is a member facility with the Professional Association of Therapy Horsemanship (PATH) and STARS has taught more than 300 lessons there since the facility opened two years ago. Southworth says the addition of horse therapy is invaluable. “If I had the facility and clientele to teach horseback riding year-round, I would do it. Horses are amazing creatures and offer amazing therapeutic bene fi ts.”

STARS is funded by grants, program revenue, and donations which are at an all-time high after the most successful annual fundraiser to date. “This summer our Farm to Barn event grossed over $500,000 in one night,” Southworth says. “Steamboat has such a generous, empathetic and tight-knit community. I always tell my staff we’re not in the ski business we’re in the relationships business.” After a quarter century, Southworth has formed countless bonds with students and their families. He owes it all to his daughter, who taught him firsthand the joy and freedom of flying down the mountain, even on one ski. //steamboatstars.com

TOP DESIGN TRENDS FOR ADDED VALUE

There’s a lot more to bathroom design than choosing tile patterns and faucets. “Amenities like free-standing tubs and glass wall showers might increase value, but it’s those beautiful, smaller details that enhance the overall experience,” says Steamboat-based architect and interior designer, Sarah Tiedeken, Partner at Vertical Arts. “What ultimately boosts value, is the feeling someone gets when entering a space,” Sarah explained. “Our design is driven by the space fi rst—how you want it to perform and feel—and then to fi nd those materials and other features that enhance it.” That’s why current trends in bathroom design are geared towards more of a spa-like experience with purposeful lighting, clean, modern lines, and intelligent design that conceals clutter.

The following are four reasons good bathroom design is about more than tubs and tiles:

SHINE YOUR LIGHT.

If there’s one thing interior designers think about often (that the rest of us might not), it’s good lighting. That’s especially important in a bathroom, where lighting can enhance both the functionality and the beauty of the space. “Having layered levels of lighting allows the bathroom to change with your mood or the time of day,” Tiedeken says. Good task lighting for applying makeup, for example, can be layered with secondary lighting like canned lights on a dimmer switch or tape lighting under a toe kick or fl oating vanity. “Layering lighting elements is super valuable and desirable relative to the spa retreat atmosphere that a lot of people are wanting,” she says. “It’s important to think beyond the 3-light fi xture that goes above the mirror. When you enter a space, you want it to feel good, and lighting is a huge part of that.”

L ET THE OUTDOORS IN.

“Natural light and access to views, or even physical access to the outdoors, is huge in terms of ambiance, whether it’s a door that opens onto an adjacent patio or a single window,” Tiedeken says. “Bathrooms that have a connection to nature just feel better in terms of bringing in natural light and creating a space that feels more expansive.” Many homes in Steamboat have amazing views that should be utilized, even in a bathroom. “Views drastically change how your bathroom feels, and it’s something you use every single day,” she says. If you can’t punch a window into your existing bathroom, use LED lights to brighten up cabinets and walls. “Lighted mirrors or backlighting with sconces can create that spa-like, ambient light,” Tiedeken says.

A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING.

Elements that are both functional and beautiful are key,” Tiedeken says. Really thinking through storage so all your everyday-use items can be concealed is ideal, and the current trend is about integrating more drawers in place of those old, bottomless cabinets that aren’t ideal for smaller items. Also, shower niches and vanity storage with docking drawers get rid of the clutter. Even medicine cabinets can be hidden

in creative ways, with walls that look like mirrors. “Being creative about providing useful storage is a way to make your bathroom feel like a spa or a retreat.” Tiedeken suggests creating a list of your items and then coming up with storage solutions, whether it’s for hair styling tools, toiletries, or towels. “That’s the best way to create a bathroom that’s simple and pristine but also functional.”

People want their bathrooms to feel fun and unique, so give your bathroom a cohesive personality,” Tiedeken says. This can be achieved with fun accents from wallpaper or special tile for the shower. “You can layer in design without having to redo everything. Fill the room with things that make you happy. Find that special element and let it shine. You don’t want your bathroom to feel like a castoff space, but one you look forward to going into because it’s beautiful and makes you feel good.”

BREAKING THE ICE Steamboat Style

INTRODUCING SKEETER’S ICE RINK

STEAMBOAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN KNOWN AS A WINTER WONDERLAND, famous for its powder, tree skiing and stacked roster of winter Olympians. That vibe will be front and center this season with the debut of Skeeter’s Ice Rink in the heart of the newly renovated Steamboat Square, the centerpiece of the new après ski plaza that is part of the $200 million Full Steam Ahead on-mountain improvement project.

On opening day, November 23, 15 local fi gure skaters had the opportunity to glide onto the brand new ice to perform and help celebrate the ski season opener and the new rink. “The resort asked us to come perform because they dedicated the new rink to women of the Yampa Valley and to celebrate Steamboat’s western heritage, so we performed a western inspired show,” says Kelli Standekar, On-Ice Director, of the local non-pro fi t Steamboat Skating Club. Skaters ranged from ages 7 – 18 and performed during the Grand Opening Celebration. “We’re super pumped about this rink. I know our skaters are super excited to be able to skate outside at the ski resort with their friends. It’s nice that our community is investing in skating as a sport.”

At 133 ft by 58 ft, it’s not quite as big as a regulation rink

(200 ft x 85 ft), but large enough for all ages to have fun all day long (operating hours are 10 am to 8 pm 7 days a week). Better yet, the rink is free, and ice skate rentals will be available in the horse trailer-turned rental shop. But really, it’s about a vibe.

I’m very excited to be able sit around the rink at one of the fi repits enjoying a signature cocktail or skating around the rink with my family, even enjoying a concert or music from the Steamboat stage,” says Jennifer Shea, Vice President of Development at Steamboat Resort.

“We are looking at other fun activities such as broom ball, curling, and fi gure skating,” she added. In the summer, turf will be rolled out, and Skeeter’s rink will turn into Skeeter’s Hub for an opportunity to enjoy yoga, lawn games, and other activities in the heart of the square.

Named after Gladys “Skeeter” Werner, the oldest child of the famous Werner family, Skeeter was born in 1933 and she began skiing at the age of one. In 1949, she rose through the ranks of competitive skiing and garnered national attention by winning the West of the Mississippi Championship in Sun Valley, Idaho. She became the youngest member of the U.S. FIS team and was ranked 10th nationally in downhill. Skeeter was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated and went on to marry Heisman Trophy winner, Doak Walker, in 1969.

S keeter started the Steamboat Ski School, serving as director and owner until 1969. She coached the Colorado Junior National Team and the infamous Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. In 1984, Skeeter was inducted into the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame and went on to receive the Hazie Werner Award in 1989. In 2001, Skeeter passed away at the age of 67. “Skeeter’s Ice Rink will be a wonderful reminder of her impact on the world of women’s skiing and on Steamboat Resort,” says Maren Franciosi, Communications Manager at Steamboat Resort. For the girls from the Steamboat Skating Club, the new rink will set the stage for ice skaters to join the ranks of skiers and visitors from all over the world in the Steamboat tradition of celebrating the spirit of winter sports. // fullsteamahead.steamboat.com

STEAMBOAT-BASED OIL PAINTER JOANNE ORCE CAPTURES THE BEAUTY OF ATHLETIC MOVEMENT IN THIS YEAR’S WINTER CARNIVAL POSTER.

She’s a former competitive triathlete with 7 full Ironmans and some 150 triathlons under her belt. She’s a swim coach and fi tness instructor, mother of three, and an artist whose passions for athleticism and oil painting were fused in the creation of this year’s 110th annual Steamboat Winter Carnival poster.

O riginally from Melbourne, Australia, Orce studied business at the University of Melbourne and then went on to work for Mobil. During a year of unpaid leave to travel through Africa, she met her husband and moved back to his native New York to start a family. That’s where Ken encouraged her to fi nally pursue a lifelong interest in art, and study illustration at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

“I fell in love with painting when I was pregnant with my second child,” she says. “That’s when I started to do some pretty interesting things with my career.” Her fi rst foray into professional work was painting large-scale carnival sideshow banners. “Big, huge, vivid colorful carnival posters of animals and circus people became my jam.”

A s a mother of three, Orce put her career on the backburner until her kids were old enough for her to begin painting again. But it wasn’t long before she was picked up by Gallery 46 in Lake Placid, where she did the exact kind of local scenes that would lead to the work she’s known for today in Steamboat. “I painted a lot of Adirondacks scenes, and a lot of moose and bears, which have become like my signature.”

O rce also polled the kids on her swim team to fi nd out their favorite event, and the consensus was the Soda Pop Slalom, so Orce also integrated that into the foreground, including a lot of detail in what she describes as “this world on Howelsen Hill.” Orce says coming up with the concept took longer than the execution. “I thought about it for two months. I would ride my bike to Howelsen and sit at the bottom of the ski runs and think about what I was going to do,” she says. Ultimately, she relied on her most trusted sounding board, her 20-year-old daughter Teagan who is currently studying art as a junior at the University of Denver. “She is my best critic,” Orce says.

At the heart of the painting is a study in movement, especially as someone who devotes so much of her life to training athletes. “As an athletic coach, I appreciate the way the body moves in an athletic environment,” Orce says. “Understanding the body and being able to create and that sense of movement is something I really tried to achieve in this painting.” The fi nal 40" x 30" piece will be reproduced for this year’s commemorative Winter Carnival poster, a milestone for this relatively new local. “I’ve only lived here for four years, but have felt so welcomed into this community,” she says. “I’m so grateful to be able to give back to the Winter Sports Club and put my heart and soul into this piece.”

Last May, the Macklowe Auction at Sotheby’s Auction House garnered the highest price ever for an entire collection, setting a new benchmark with a cumulative $922.2 million.
