Thanda Island

How They Dazzle Us

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to win the lottery and buy yourself a private island then this Landing is for you. It started as a dream to find a small, remote and uninhabited Tropical Island off the coast of Africa and it grew from there. Slowly but surely it has been turned into one of the world’s most exclusive island getaways; a paradise that affords you both complete privacy with family and friends and a fully immersive nature experience. Thanda Island is nestled within a marine reserve and it boasts a single luxurious villa and two traditional beach chalets. Like all things that started as a dream, it is completely magical.

Their Sustainable Superpower

The island might be tiny but the opportunities and experiences that are available are diverse and plentiful. You can swim with the gentle whale sharks, an amazing and humbling experience that puts into perspective your overall scale and size in the universe. You can dive in the largest marine protected reserve in the Indian Ocean or ride the trade winds on a traditional Arab dhow. Take a trip on an antique, 1930s cruise yacht or indulge your taste buds with a Swahili or Arabian feast. It is as romantic as it is pristine and as private as it is invigorating. There is no fitting in with a daily programme or itinerary – it is your escape and everything is tailored for your convenience and enjoyment.

Why We Love Them

This Landing works on multiple fronts to preserve and protect the environment and to educate both the local people and the tourists who visit it. Among the activities and initiatives pioneered by the team are projects involving some of the region’s larger and more exotic creatures, including sea turtles, dugongs (which in case you don’t know are fascinating mammals that are almost a mix between manatees and dolphins) and whale sharks. There is also extensive work done in terms of the preservation and rehabilitation of the Shungimbili Coral Reef. The island also acts as a base from which Marine Park Rangers patrol to stop illegal fishing and poaching. Thanda Island is deeply committed to the education and well-being of the young people on Mafia and it has rolled out and delivered many programmes that focus on topics like sustainable fishing and marine conservation.
