Mission Message Dear Relevant Radio Family,

“St. Joseph was a just man, a tireless worker, the upright guardian of those entrusted to his care. May he always guard, protect and enlighten families.” ~ Pope St. John Paul II In the Catholic world, the month of March is traditionally the Month of St. Joseph, celebrating him as the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and foster father of Our Lord Jesus Christ. No other man has been raised to such a dignity – he was indeed a very holy man! That’s why the Church holds him up as a model for men, women, children, fathers, mothers, workers, priests, nuns, and I could go on and on. He’s a model for everyone! We recently began Lent, and I’d like to propose that we all take St. Joseph as a closer friend and model this Lenten Season. We can do this by focusing on three key words from John Paul’s quote above – “just”, “tireless”, “upright” – and applying them to our Lenten journey. “Just” means fair, as in treating people fairly, according to their God-given dignity, how you would want to be treated. “Tireless” means working with diligence, not being lazy, with intent on fulfilling God’s will in your daily life. And “upright” means honest, always telling the truth, always acting with decency.

Those three words remind me of a good friend, Michael Birck, the founder of Tellabs, Inc., who passed away a couple years ago. He always strived to act upright and honest in his business dealings and personal life. I looked up to him as a mentor and business leader, and so one day I asked him for the words of wisdom he lived by. I expected some profound and philosophical statement, but instead he told me three simple things: “Tell the truth. Try your best. Do the right thing.” That’s it. That’s all you need to do. It sounds like St. Joseph was his model too! If you imitate St. Joseph, you’ll find yourself closer to Jesus and Mary, and you’ll feel like you’re a part of the Holy Family. It’s what this life is all about, and that’s something to really look forward to. May God bless you and your families during this Lenten Season! With prayers and best wishes,

Rev. Francis J. Hoffman, JCD Executive Director/CEO
