Many of you will have watched The Masters on television a few weeks ago. The viewing figures were high, watched in more than 190 countries by more than 100 million people.

As a consequence of so many viewers, the cost of advertising was at a premium. One ad, shown numerous times, saw Rory McIlroy from a very young age developing into the golfer he is today, alongside him was that other well known golfer, Tiger Woods. Both golfers are sponsored by the same company , whose logo tells us to ‘Just Do It!’

Perhaps we should adopt that attitude as we live out our Christian life or when trying to decide whether we should attend Church. On a Saturday night as we think about Sunday and Church we should say to ourselves ‘Just Do It!’

Special Church Services in May in St. Brigid’s: Sun 17th May We will have our Open Air Service in the Rectory field at 5.00pm the day after the Mayfair. This is becoming a very popular event in our Parish Calendar over the last few years and we extend a very warm welcome to all the Parishioners of St Brigid’s and All Saints’ to attend this service.

Sun 31st May Our ‘Sunday All Together’ service at 11.30 am is on the 5th Sunday in May. This is a Service of the Word format followed by sausages, wedges and rice krispie buns in the Parish Hall afterwards. Everyone welcome.

We are having an action packed summer term and enjoying the wonderful weather. Here are some of the things we’ve been up to: The middle room had a visit from “Chatbudi”. This was set up by parents who were concerned about the safety of their own children on the internet. They were given age relevant useful hints on what to avoid and what was safe for them. The children interacted well and found it very informative and helpful. A speaker from the “Fields of Life” charity came to the school and the children raised money to buy pencil cases for children in Uganda by dressing up on St. Patrick’s Day and donating to the charity. The Junior Room went to see the all time favourite “The Cat in the Hat” at the Pavilion Theatre and it was a lovely treat. Thank you to all the parents who helped with lifts and supervision. If any of you have noticed our bright and sunny playground it is all down to the parents who worked very hard over their weekends to tidy up the flowerbeds, paint the benches in lovely vibrant colours and add playground markings for games and of course a lovely new basketball net. The children really appreciate this. Many thanks to our lovely Parents’ Association who organised an Easter Egg hunt in Carysfort Park, it was great fun and the children thoroughly enjoyed it though it seems so long ago now. Finally we had our joint Church/School Spring Fair on Saturday 25 th April and I’m sure everyone will agree it was a fabulous success and most importantly raised much needed funds for the Church and School. A huge thank you to all who donated gifts, worked on stalls, sold raffle tickets and helped or contributed in any way. We appreciate it immensely. From the staff and students of All Saints’ N.S.

Garden/Nature Club. Well, we think we are the ‘Bees Knees’ in school and community gardening. We have won two competitions since January and appeared on a live broadcast with Today FM. We have successfully rescued and released a hedgehog that was injured last October. We are currently raising pheasants for release in June and waiting for partridge eggs to arrive this month. Our bees have survived the winter and are busy organising the hive and producing more workers. The pond is full of tadpoles and the Wild Meadow has regular visits from butterflies. Of course, the best things that grow in the garden are the children. . We plan to visit Carlow Free Range poultry before the end of June to learn more about where our food comes from. Come and visit us any Saturday afternoon – we still have a few allotments available if you would like to ‘Grow Your Own’.

The Spotlight on our ‘Organisation of the month’ for May is “The Choir.” The Choir is a vital part of Parish & Church Life for St. Brigid’s and All Saints’. Not only do they provide the backdrop for every hymn sung, there is plenty of opportunity to learn beautiful new anthems, arias and hymns. Choir practices are held on Monday nights at 7.45 pm in All Saints’ Church and Wednesday nights at 7.30 pm in St. Brigid’s Church. The hymns, psalms and canticles are practiced for the coming Sundays and Anthems learnt and rehearsed for Special Services. Choir practice is less than an hour but during that time there is much laughter, fun and of course singing. If there are particular hymns you would like to see sung in Church, choir Practice is the perfect time to put in your request!

The choir is often invited to sing in other Churches for special occasions and indeed have just been invited to sing with Christ Church Cathedral Choir to sing at ‘Evensong’ on Sunday 10th May. (Rehearsal at 2.30 pm for 3.30 pm service.) No Auditions are needed for either Choir. We would be delighted to welcome new members of ALL ages to come along and add to the musicality of our Church. There is a social side to the Choir also with semi regular drinks in the Lep Inn and often informal get togethers with friends after choir practice! We would also dearly love to see some of our younger parishioners coming along to choir practice and indeed if there was some accompanying music such as violins, violas, cellos, recorders etc that would be most welcome. Please contact Clive on 087 2588 481 or see him after Church any Sunday!

The Reading Group resumed after Easter to discuss So, Anyhow by John Cleese...he of Monty Python, Fawlty Towers and other comedy roles. The Book is a biography but left out much of his personal detail in the latter half. The first part of the book deals with his growing up years and early adulthood at Cambridge University and as a teacher in his old school, where manners, courtesy and honesty were highly important. He seemed much of a loner but as the family moved at least 8 times in 8 years it can’t have been easy to make friends etc in new places. He found his niche in the drama groups at the university and the latter half of the book is filled with anecdotes and tales about writing the scripts etc for shows with the team. He gave no clues on how to become a successful script writer!

We meet again on Monday 11th May at 11am at The Wishing Well and the book chosen for discussion is The Midwife of Venice by Roberta Rich. Ida Heavenor 2887982 Barbara Lowen 2887010 Aileen Prole 2889565

Although we had no Mothers’ Union meeting in April as the first Thursday of the week was during Holy Week, our Mothers’ Union committee have been busy behind the scences. We have been selling the lovely publication called ‘Grace & Flavours’ in support of the Mums in May 2015 campaign. At €4 per book, this delightful collection of recipes and meditations and prayers is well worth a look at. As we go to press the Disocesan Council meeting is taking place and we will report back to all members at our final meeting in May anything of relevance to our branch. Many of you will have received a copy of the beautiful ‘e-card’ we receive from the Spanish Branch of Mothers’ Union we contacted in March. It was sent to all of us wishing us a very happy Easter and we were delighted to receive the communication. As you are all aware the Annual Mayfair of St. Brigid’s is coming up on Saturday 16 th May. We are once again appealing to all our wonderful members to start baking up a storm and helping us contribute to another very successful cake stall. If you would like to bake in advance freezer space can be arranged – please contact Clare MacManus for details. The committee are also finalising the details of our outing on Saturday 6 th June and we will let all members know the details as soon as possible. On a final note, the total amount raised for Christian Aid at our Famine Lunch was €647.50. Thank You to all who helped on the day.
