MUSEUMS / ΜΟυσεΙΑ ACROPOLIS MUSEUM The Acropolis Museum is an archaeological site-specific museum, housing the most famous works of classical antiquity.The sculptural adornments and various votives enable visitors to become familiar with the sanctuaries and monuments of the Athenian Acropolis. In the Museum’s neoclassical building, the collections that “narrate” the history of Hellenism over time were displayed in an enriched form.These collections comprises
many distinct categories totalling more than 40,000 items, illustrating the long and fascinating history of the Greek Civilization through a spectacular historical panorama: from antiquity and the age of Roman domination to the medieval Byzantine period; from the fall of Constantinople (1453) and the centuries of Frankish and Ottoman occupation to the outbreak of the struggle for independence in 1821; and from the formation of the modern state of Greece (1830) down to 1922, the year in which the Asia Minor disaster took place. Η ενότητα των συλλογών αυτών συγκροτείται από πολλά επιμέρους σύνολα με πάνω από 40.000 έργα, που καταγράφουν το χαρακτήρα του ελληνικού κόσμου στο θεαματικό πανόραμα της χρονικής του διαδρομής: από την αρχαιότητα και την εποχή της ρωμαϊκής κυριαρχίας ως τη μεσαιωνική περίοδο του Βυζαντίου, από την πτώση της Κωνσταντινούπολης, την περίοδο της φραγκικής και οθωμανικής κατοχής, ως την έκρηξη του Αγώνα της Ανεξαρτησίας το 1821, και από την περίοδο της διαμόρφωσης του νέου ελληνικού κράτουςως το 1922,τη χρονιάεκείνη που σημαδεύει η Μικρασιατική Καταστροφή. Antonis Benakis initially started collecting in Egypt at the beginning of the 20th century when at the same time many similar collections were created in Europe and America, which, in many cases, complement the Benaki Museum collection. The building which houses these collections is located in the historic centre of Athens, near the ancient Kerameikos cemetery. The evolution of Islamic civilisation from the first appearance of Islam up to the Ottoman period and the corresponding development of Islamic art up to the 19th century are demonstrated by more than 8,000 works of art, including ceramics, gold, metalwork, textiles and glass, smaller groupings of bone objects, inscribed funerary steles and weaponry, as well as the marble-faced interior of a reception room from a 17th-century Cairo mansion.
