AMELIA EARHART This week, Tidbits is researching the life of the greatest female aviator of all time. • Amelia Earhart saw her first airplane at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines in 1907 when she was 10. Prompted by her father to take a ride, Amelia declared the biplane was “a thing of rusty wire and wood and not at all interesting,” and asked to return to the merry-go-round. • During World War I, Amelia received training as a Red Cross nurse’s aide and served at Toronto’s Spadina Military Hospital. Besides listening to stories from military pilots, she spent her free time watching pilots in training at a local airfield, all of which sparked her interest in flying. In December, 1920, at age 23, she and her father attended an aerial show at a California airfield, where she had her very first airplane ride with a U.S. World War I pilot, a 10-minute flight for $10. It was 10 minutes that changed her life. • The next month, Amelia started flying lessons, a course of 12 hours of instruction for $500. She took on several jobs to save up $1,000 for two sessions, as well as to purchase her first plane, a yellow craft she named “The Canary.” • In October 1922, Earhart set her first record when became the first female to fly solo above 14,000 feet (4,300 m). Shortly afterward, she became the 16th woman in the U.S. to receive a pilot’s license. • Earhart was invited to fly across the Atlantic in June 1928, although she did none of the flying. Wilmer Stultz was the pilot and Earhart was given the duty of keeping the flight log. The plane departed Newfoundland on June 17 and reached Wales 20 hours and 40 minutes later. Two months later, Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across North America and back. (CONTINUED ON PAGE 4)

• On Dec. 11, 2008, Bernie Madoff, the founder and chairman of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, was arrested and subsequently convicted of fraud for the multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme that fleeced investors around the world for decades. • On Dec. 12, 1968, American actress Tallulah Bankhead died at the age of 66 from double pneumonia. A flamboyant personality with a huskily seductive voice and a flair for exhibitionism, her greatest success was as a stage actress (she was the inspiration for Blanche Dubois in "A Streetcar Named Desire"), though she also appeared in several prominent films and on TV and radio. • On Dec. 13, 1642, Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer and merchant, reached the coast of South Island in New Zealand and named it Staten Landt. The first European in recorded history to land on the Australian island state of Tasmania, he claimed it for the Dutch crown, and it was named for him as well. • On Dec. 14, 1974, disaster film "The Towering Inferno," starring professional rivals Steve McQueen and Paul Newman, was released. The film was shot in sequence so all the actors looked authentically haggard and dirty as it progressed. • On Dec. 15, 1840, Napoleon Bonaparte received a French state funeral in Paris more than two decades after his death on the island of St. Helena, when his remains were exhumed and transferred to the Hotel des Invalides on the initiative of the French prime minister and King Louis-Philippe. • On Dec. 16, 1907, in order to demonstrate America's new presence as a world power, President Theodore Roosevelt embarked on a round-theworld cruise in a group of U.S. Navy battleships, making friendly courtesy visits to a number of international ports. DECEMBER IN HISTORY

MONDAY

(CONTINUED FROM COVER)

Within four months, ten more states had seceded, forming an 11-state Confederate States of America, population 9 million. • Wilbur and Orville Wright took to the air on December 17, 1903 for the first powered, controlled airplane flight. Orville was first up, flying 120 feet (37 m) in 12 seconds at a speed of 6.8 mph (10.9 km/hr). Wilbur was next, airborne for 175 feet (53 m), followed by Orville’s second attempt, 200 feet (61 m). Wilbur wrapped up the day with a distance of 852 feet (260 m). Their original plane, the Wright Flyer, is housed at the Smithsonian Institute. • It’s a half-a-million-mile round trip to the Moon. Twenty-four men have traveled from Earth to the Moon, but only 12 of them walked on the lunar surface during the Apollo missions between 1969 and 1972. The last two men to walk on the moon, Eugene Cernan and Harrison “Jack” Schmitt, were part of the Apollo 17 mission, accomplishing the final walk on December 14, 1972. • In the automotive world, December 7, 1931 marked the production of the last Ford Model A. It had been in production since December of 1927, with total sales of 4,320,446. In December 2008, in order to keep America’s auto industry out of bankruptcy, the U.S. Government stepped in with a $17 billion bailout of General Motors and Chrysler. GM had experienced $71 billion in losses over two years. Government officials feared that the collapse of the auto industry, which put 3 million jobs at risk, would be a blow that the economy could not endure. The Ford Motor Company did not require funds, as they had secured financing before the crisis. In December 1952, the first Corvette was completed, a hand-built prototype that was shown to the public for the first time less than a month later. Production began six months later, with a price tag of $3,513. Text by Tidbits©

AMELIA EARHART (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1)

• In 1927, Charles Lindbergh made history as the first aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Amelia Earhart left Newfoundland exactly five years after Lucky Lindy, and landed in an Irish cow field in 14 hours, 56 minutes, becoming the second person and first female to achieve it. • Earhart set her sights on circumnavigating the globe and on June 1, 1937, she and her navigator Fred Noonan set off from Oakland, California, on an eastbound route. The pair flew to Miami, then to South America, across the Atlantic to Africa, then east to India and Southeast Asia. The route then took them to Indonesia, Australia, and Papau New Guinea. The final leg was from New Guinea to be from Howland Island in the Pacific, on to Honolulu, and back to Oakland. They had flown 22,000 miles (35,405 km) with 7,000 (11,265 km) miles to go. However, on July 2, a month after they had taken off, the twin-engine Lockheed 10E Electra disappeared without a trace over the Pacific, never reaching Howland Island.

• Four months before the beginning of the American Civil War, South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union on December 20, 1860.

• Vincent Van Gogh is considered one of the greatest painters of all time. Over his career he generated more than 800 oil paintings and 700 drawings. Yet he suffered from severe mental illness, including deep depression, hallucinations, and delusions. On December 23, 1888, the 35-year-old Van Gogh used a razor to slash off his left ear. He went home from the hospital after two weeks of healing, with no recollection of the incident whatsoever. Five months later he admitted himself to a psychiatric hospital where he spent a year. In July of 1890, the artist shot himself in the chest, but miraculously survived, yet perished from the wound two days later after uttering his final words, “The sadness will last forever.” In 2022, Van Gogh’s artwork “Orchard with Cypresses” sold at a Christie’s auction for $117.2 million.

The month of December is full of historical events, and this week, Tidbits takes the opportunity to focus on a few.
