SWIMMING Teaches Skills While Providing A Unique Experience by Mandy Huckabee, Beth Pai:fitt and Calette Zoller
What's wet, cold and latefor dass? A fresh; ma11, of course, pa{tidpatingin theia\I swimming W\il, The four-week unit of Physical Education Class was a reqwrement for freShmen. Students swam in the North Building Natatorium, which meant that most of them had to trek across Westerly Parkway &om the South Building. While half of the class took part in the swimming class, the other half participated in the "Adventure Unit" in th<: South Building Gym. After a month the two groups switched units. To kick off the swl.mmJng unit, s tudents reviewed the four basic str,okes: the crawl, l;>ackstr9ke, breaststroh, and sidestroke. After this review, the participants were exposed to a variety of action-packed water games, such as water basketba II, polo,and volleyball. Basic lifeguarding sldlls and instruction on Personal Flotation Devices came nexL After that, students explored the wonders of the bottom of tlle Natatorium Pool "ith a pair of flippers and a •norkeling mask. At the beginning of the unit, students took a swimming pretest. They were then plac<!d in a group of similar ability.
