State College football had a dream year in 1971, going undefeated for the first time in 26 years and proving itself to be the power of Central Pennsylvania football. Congratulations are deserved by all involved. State won the Central Counties and Western Conference Championships for the second year in a row, having emerged victorious in 21 out of its last 22 starts (its only loss was to Tyrone late last year). A high-powered offense was led by Larry Suhey, who gained 1,111 yards on 193 carries for 17 TD's this year. Dirk Grissinger spearheaded a stingy defense that recorded five shutouts and allowed an average of only three points a game. These two squads climaxed a perfect season by destroying Bellefonte 48-8 to retain the Iron Kettle. Head Coach Jim Williams was named Coach-of-the-Year for his exceptional leadership. Six players were named to the All-Area teams: Larry Suhey, Ed Stefanko and Dirk Grissinger on offense, and Al Sherritt, Andy Sefter and Tim Curley on defense. Suhey was named to the AP and UPI first string All-State backfield, and the UPI selection committee named Grissinger, a two-way performer at tackle, to the second string All-State squad. With so many senior stars graduating, State may not be able to duplicate their fine record next year, but an undefeated JV team greatly enhances State High's chances of achieving a Penn State-type winning streak.
