Council has tunnel vision

Millers Road near the Precinct 15 site due to the project,” he said. Acting Public Transport Minister Jaala Pulford said there were no current plans to introduce a new train station for Precinct 15, but a future bus network would connect residents with Spotswood and Newport stations.

Maribyrnong council has called for more public transport spending and the use of rail to move freight in a submission on the West Gate Tunnel Project. Responding to the tollway project’s Environmental Effects Statement, the council also highlighted “the detrimental” impacts of the project in the Footscray Wharf area, calling for the state government’s help towards a $12.5 million revitalisation of the Maribyrnong River’s west bank. The submission pointed out the project will create up to $500,000 of planning work the council will have to undertake on the use of land affected by the new tunnel and elevated freeway. The council welcomed the plan to extend truck curfews on key Yarraville and Footscray roads but highlighted the need for a new road connection to the West Gate Freeway via the Paramount Road corridor in Tottenham so trucks can abide by the bans. A submission by Gellibrand MP Tim Watts backed the project overall, but noted community concerns about the impact of potential increases in truck volumes in Hobsons Bay. “I have also been made aware of community sentiment for the Victorian government to consider acquiring residential properties on Hyde Street Yarraville that will be affected by increased volumes of trucks that are unable to use the tunnel.” Benjamin Millar

Have your say on domestic animals The Hobsons Bay community is invited to have their say on Council’s Domestic Animal Management Plan and help shape animal services in the city. Council must update is Domestic Animal Management Plan every four years. This Plan promotes responsible pet ownership and protects the community from issues associated with nuisance cats and dogs.

We need you to help us develop the Plan by filling out an online survey. It is important that the community identifies issues for particular attention, such as dog off lead areas, dogs on beaches, cats on private property and restricted dog breeds to ensure our animal management services focus on the issues that the community considers to be most important.

The survey is available at participate.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au The survey closes on Friday 21 July at midnight.
