One of the great joys and challenges of sport is starting again. As we start the 2024 VFL season, everything we achieved last year is history and now forms part of the experiences that will guide us through a new season. The ultimate goal remains the same, but there’s been a significant change in the people who will take us there.

We have a new senior coach, a new Football Operations Manager and many other new faces in the off-field team. On-field is no different, with the changing of the guard and a new group of players ready to create their own history.

We are all custodians of this famous club and our challenge this year and every year is to strive for the ultimate success and have a good time doing it. While we want to win, our club is built on the enjoyment of the game for everyone.

Avalon Airport Oval is a great place to enjoy watching football and we welcome

everyone to come along and share the experience of VFL football. It is an elite competition but you can still have a kick on the ground and hear the coaches addressing the players during the breaks.

We would love you to become a paid up member and enjoy not only the financial benefits that come with that, but that extra layer of connection to the players, the coaches and the club. Those members who were part of the 2023 journey know full well the rush of being part of the inner sanctum as the whole club rode the rollercoaster from round one to the Grand Final. There is nothing like it.

I look forward to seeing you in the gold and black Big W cheering on our team in 2024.

Tigers are part of the community

The Werribee Football Club has long been dedicated to fostering and improving the lives of the people who live in Wyndham by creating a sense of belonging through football. We believe in using sport as a powerful tool to connect people and overcome barriers within our community.

In 2023, we successfully delivered over 230 clinics across 17 primary schools, a testament to our commitment. These clinics play a vital role in supporting our local community clubs and providing opportunities for participants from multicultural backgrounds to connect with broader communities.

Building on this success, we seized the opportunity to enhance our academy programs. The TAC Unity Cup, supported by the North Melbourne Football Club, offered young multicultural Victorians a platform to connect positively through their shared love for Australian rules football. Our participation in this event, with both girls’ and boys’ teams, showcased our dedication to inclusivity and sportsmanship. Notably, our boys’ team clinched the grand final victory and was honoured with the ’Fair Play’ award, reflecting our values of respect and integrity.

Additionally, our Diversity Squad program focused on engaging participants from Chinese and Indian communities, successfully executing programs in three schools and involving 90 participants. This initiative underscores our commitment to diversity and inclusion within our programs.

We had the privilege of being the first VFL club allowed to run the Next Generation Academy program. Over five weeks, we provided participants and their parents with valuable insights into the professional football environment and what it takes to become a full-time athlete. Led by coaches like Majak Daw and supported by former head coach Michael Barlow, the program emphasised fundamental skills and leadership development, empowering both participants and their families.

programs for WRFL junior players. These efforts aimed to cultivate a strong base of talented players while supporting junior development in our region.

In addition to our academy programs, we continued our annual initiatives with great success. CDC Champions Day, in collaboration with the CDC team. Our school holiday programs at Pacific Werribee Shopping Centre attracted enthusiastic participation, providing children with memorable experiences alongside our senior players.

We also prioritised community outreach, hosting a Development Day for the Reclink/ Wynbay team, and delivering school holiday

Our Half Time Grid and Kids’ Activation Zone were further highlights, engaging participants, and young supporters alike during home games and fostering a sense of excitement within our community.

None of this would be possible without the generous support of our community partners, including CDC Victoria, Pacific Werribee, AFL Victoria, and Wyndham City Council. Their contributions enable us to continue connecting with the community and delivering impactful programs that make a difference in people’s lives. We extend our heartfelt thanks to them for their ongoing support and collaboration

Going back in time

Pacific Werribee has been turned into a hub of wildlife conservation and exploration these school holidays.

In collaboration with Zoos Victoria and Werribee Open Range Zoo, the ‘Endangered Zone’ will offer children an opportunity to learn about the importance of protecting endangered species and their habitats.

Through engaging activities, participants will gain insight into the challenges faced by these animals and discover ways they can contribute to their preservation.

Attendees will also have the chance to encounter a lifelike Tyrannosaurus rex, a highlight of Zoos Victoria’s ‘Dinos at the Zoo’ experience.

Families are encouraged to immerse themselves in this educational and interactive experience, focusing on local endangered species.

Zoos Victoria, including Werribee Open Range Zoo, is dedicated to safeguarding 27 Australian species facing extinction from various threats.

The ‘Endangered Zone’ seeks to address this by introducing the community to seven species on Zoos Victoria’s 27 priority local threatened species list, along with one prehistoric creature - the Tyrannosaurus rex.

RAAF demolition looms

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is planning to demolish more buildings at the historic Point Cook RAAF Base, with public consultation on the proposal currently underway.

A total of 19 buildings are earmarked for demolition after being deemed either surplus to requirements or a safety risk, including Bellman hangars RAAF standard huts, store facilities and toilet blocks. Public consultation opened on March 27 and closes on April 11.

Defence first proposed to demolish the 19 buildings in 2019, but the significant heritage value of the base delayed those plans.

RAAFBasePointCookwasthefirstmilitary aviation base in Australia, dating from 1913,

and the birthplace of the Royal Australian Air Force in 1921.

It is listed on the National (NHL) and Commonwealth Heritage Lists and more than 100 buildings at the base are heritage listed, including some of those set to be demolished, including RAAF standard huts and Bellman hangars, which both date back to World War Two.

A report prepared by the ADF into the proposed demolitions included a heritage impact assessment that found the removal of 15 WWII associated buildings was “likely to degrade or damage one or more National Heritage values” and “permanently destroy, remove and substantially alter’ the fabric of a Commonwealth Heritage Place.”

Despite this the heritage impact assessment

still approved the demolitions.

“The proposed action will not cause one or more of the historic NHL values of RAAF Base Point Cook to be lost given the contributory nature of the elements proposed for removal or relocation,” said the report.

“Thecumulativeimpactoflossonthebroader NHL environment is diluted somewhat by the fact that the buildings under assessment form part of a larger collection of WWII buildings that demonstrate values at Base-wide level.”

“There’s been a considerable amount removed and the stealthy way that they’ve gone about this latest round of demolitions shows that to them Point Cook does not represent anything of great value. It’s just a cost.”

Defence has considered selling the Point Cook base on numerous occasions, including in 2012 and 2016.

Swimming lesson demand soars

When Wyndham swim instructor Shawn Readheardtherecentnewsthattwomenfrom Victorian had drowned while attempting to save their child in a Gold Coast pool, he knew the phone was going to ring.

“Every time something like that happens I get a call,” said Mr Read who has run Shawn’s Swim School in Hoppers Crossing for 30 years.

“It was similar in February when a family of three from India drowned on Phillip Island.”

As with the Phillip Island drownings, the two men on the Gold Coast were Indian migrants whose desperation to save a loved one overrode their inability to swim, with tragic consequences.

On both occasions Mr Read was inundated

with adults from Wyndham’s large Indian diaspora, as well as other migrant communities and non-migrants as well, all wanting to learn to swim.

But with a waiting list of more than 500 adults, Shawn’s Swim School has no way of accommodating them.

Other swimming schools in Wyndham contactedbyStarWeeklyalsoreporteddemand for lessons far outstripping availability.

Mr Read said the issue went well beyond just one migrant community responding to tragic events.

“With the influx of people from different countries and cultures into the community, people who grew up without the opportunity for swimming lessons in their country are doing the right thing by their children and are booking them in for swimming lessons, then

realising that they themselves can’t swim and in an emergency they wouldn’t be able to safely rescue their own children,” Mr Read said.

“That’s increased their awareness that they need swim lessons.”

That was the motivation for one Indian migrant Star Weekly spoke to, to try and learn to swim.

“My father in law has a pool at home and when we go there it’s always in the back of my mind,” said the father of two from Werribee who wished to remain anonymous.

“It’s a scary thought. Kids running around and something happens and you don’t know how to swim.”

Despite this, he’s so far been unable to secure swimming lessons, with long waiting lists not the only problem.

“It’s an extra expense. Things are expensive

Willow spreads her aviator wings

Whereas most teenagers are learning to drive in the hope of eventually getting their car licence, Werribee 14 year old Willow Plenty is aiming a bit higher. Literally.

Rather than bunny hopping around an empty shopping centre carpark, Willow spends her spare time gliding serenely above Wyndham as she pursues her dream of becoming a professional pilot.

“The first time I went gliding was in 2019 when I was 9,” said Willow.

“I was very short I couldn’t reach the rudder peddles.”

What might’ve been terrifying for others,

proved inspiring for Willow, who has spent the past five years practicing her gliding skills with the Australian Air League squadron in Point Cook, where she was named Victorian Senior Cadet of the Year in 2023. These days Willow can not only reach the rudder pedals, but will soon be able to operate them on her own.

“I’m with an instructor (right now). I’m too young to go by myself but when I turn 15 I can get my solo license.”

Willow turns 15 next year and has recently been awarded a scholarship with the Geelong Gliding Club where she can prepare for her

first solo flight.

Gliders are non-motorised aircraft that are towed into the air behind a plane and then released to glide slowly to the ground in journeys that usually last from 15 to 30 minutes.

While her ultimate goal is to become a commercial pilot flying motorised aircraft, for now Willow seems content floating on air.

“When I’m up in the air it feels like all pressure is released and I can be myself and enjoy what I do.”

already so it adds extra,” said the man who has taken to using the public pool at AquaPulse in Hoppers Crossing in an attempt to teach himself.

Even here at Wyndham’s largest swimming centre, capacity has been reached.

“Recently, at AquaPulse, our WynSwim Swim School has reached its full capacity, accommodating over 3,600 students, including both adults and children,” said a spokesperson for AquaPulse operator, WynActive.

“While we do not maintain waiting lists, we are acutely conscious of the high demand for swimming lessons among both adults and children within the Wyndham area.”

Kingswim, a national swim school chain with a center in Manor Lakes, has recently announced an expanded adult learn to swim program to meet rising demand.

Volunteer expo in May

Wyndham locals are being encouraged to volunteer their time to attend the Wyndham Volunteer Expo next month.

The free expo will be held from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, May 11 at Encore Events Centre in Hoppers Crossing.

The expo will feature a range of volunteering organisations across all sectors and representatives will be on hand to provide information, answer questions and have a chat about the various positions they offer.

Wyndham council is presenting the expo and mayor Jennie Barrera urged members of the community to come along.

“Wyndham City is encouraging anyone interested in volunteering to come along to the volunteer expo and find out about a range of opportunities that are available in our municipality,” she said.

“Come and meet your local community groups and not-for-profit organisations who need your help.”

In promoting the event, Cr Barrera extolled the virtues of volunteering more broadly.

“Volunteering has many benefits and is a great way to get involved in the local community, make a difference, build social connections, learn new skills and can be a pathway to employment,” she said.

“Volunteering brings people together, it builds communities and creates a better society for everyone.”

Rebels engage in Tarneit talks

The Melbourne Rebels could soon be based out of Western United’s base at the Regional Football Facility in Tarneit.

A private equity-backed consortium representing the Rebels is believed to be in the final stages of negotiations with Western MelbourneGroup,theownersoftheA-League club and the venue, to have the two clubs share the facility.

Led by former Qantas chair and former Rio Tinto chief executive Leigh Clfford and featuring other leading figures from the Melbourne business community, the

consortium is seeking to move the struggling Super Rugby franchise to Wyndham as a way of securing their future in Victoria.

Wyndham is home to one of the largest Pasifika communities in Victoria and already boasts a large rugby union fan base.

The deal would include the Rebels playing games at the recently opened 5000 capacity Regional Football Facility and then at the 15,000 capacity stadium which is anticipated to be ready for the 2026-27 A-League season and the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Both the federal government and Wyndham council have been briefed on negotiations over recent months.

Western Melbourne Group chairman Jason Sourasis said the potential deal made sense for both clubs.

“There are obvious synergies hosting both Western United and the Melbourne Rebels and naturally, we are keen to explore those opportunities,’’ said Mr Sourasis, who is also executive chairman of Western United.

“Ourfirstwomen’sA-LeaguegameatTarneit lastmonthwasagreatsuccessandthisSaturday the 6th of April we take another huge step with the first Men’s A-League game at the facility.

Rebels’ move is no April Fools joke

News that the Melbourne Rebels Super Rugby franchise might be about to base themselves in Wyndham, has come as a pleasant surprise to the municipality’s small but passionate rugby union fraternity.

“I haven’t been able to wipe the smile off my face,” said Ean Drummond, president and founder of the Wyndham City Rhinos Rugby Union Club.

Like much of the rugby and soccer communities and Wyndham more broadly, Mr Drummond was taken aback by the announcement last week the Rebels were in negotiations with A-League club Western United, about becoming a co-tenant at their recently opened training facility in Tarneit.

“I first thought it was an April Fools joke

to be honest,” said Mr Drummond when he first heard of the plans proposed by a private consortium led by former Qantas chairman, Leigh Clifford, who are aiming to save the struggling Super Rugby franchise.

While a deal is yet to be made, Mr Drummond said the move would be godsend for grassroots rugby in Wyndham.

“It’s a great opportunity for the further exposure of rugby out in the western suburbs,” he said.

“It’’ll just completely lift the profile of the game here.”

Ean Drummond founded the Wyndham Rhinos as a rugby league club in 1997, before they changed to the 15 man game in 2004. He said while the Rebels moving to Tarneit

would be great way to celebrate the club’s 20th anniversary playing union, it was potentially much more important than that.

‘You need to bare in mind it’s not just Wyndham that would benefit, but Footscray, Brimbank, Melton and Geelong all of which have rugby clubs,” he said.

Even if the Rebels don’t end up coming, Mr Drummond declared the Wyndham Rhinos were here to stay.

“All i can say is that union has been played in Victoria long before the Rebels came and will continue to be played in Victoria if unfortunately they don’t continue.”

region can be proud to call their own.

“We welcome the opportunity to continue to achieve that connection in close collaboration with the Melbourne Rebels women’s and men’s teams.’’

Consortium spokesperson and current Melbourne Rebels director Georgia Widdup said the move to Tarneit would be the game-changer for both the club and rugby in Victoria.

“We have an exciting vision and a detailed, common sense plan to grow the sport of rugby in the fastest growing municipality in Australia,’’she said.

Police target transit hubs

Police arrested 15 people and seized seven weapons in an operation targeting crime at three major western suburbs public transport hubs last week.

The latest edition of Operation PentagonwasheldatWerribee,Sunshine and Watergardens railway stations from Tuesday, April 2 to Thursday April 4.

Transit police were supported by local divisional resources, authorised officers and the Public Order Response Team (PORT) in patrolling the three hubs in an effort to detect and deter crime and bolster public safety.

Some of the arrests included a 35-year-old male from Oak Park for possession of an imitation firearm, a 49-year-old female from Deer Park for theft, a 14-year-old boy for possession of a machete and a 15-year-old boy for possession of an axe.

Transit Safety Division Acting Senior Sergeant Matt Wilson said the aim of the operation was to send a clear message that crime on the public transport network will not be tolerated.

“These targeted operations help us detect and deter offending across the public transport network.” he said.

“This operation saw Transit police members, with support from PORT and local divisional resources patrol in and around several of our major western suburbs public transport hubs. We also had Transit police riding the train network to ensure the safety of commuters. Our focus is making sure people are not only safe but feel safe wherever and whenever they use public transport – so we will continue to have a highly visible presence and conduct these operations at major public transport hubs to boost safety.”

Wave of support backs United

“Guaranteed,” declared John Aloisi emphatically.

The Western United coach had just witnessed his team come back from a 0-2 first half deficit to beat Macarthur 4-2 in the club’s first men’s A-League match in Tarneit on Saturday.

When asked post-game if his last placed team would be higher up the ladder if they’d been able to play at their new home earlier, the former Socceroos hero was in no doubt.

“It’s guaranteed we would,” he said before adding “we can’t change it now” lest he been seen making excuses.

Given the way his side surfed the wave of home support to just their sixth victory of the campaign, one that lifted them of the foot of the table, Aloisi had a point.

Equally, the fact this win required such a stirring second half comeback suggests Western’s problems this seasons go a little bit deeper than just where they play their home fixtures.

Those problems were on full display in a first half when a penalty from Macarthur’s Valerie Germain, followed by a strike from Ulises Davilla, threatended to turn a party atmopshere funereal.

Fortunately Western did enough to keep the 3045 crowd interested, with Daniel Penha and Michael Ruhs both going close, while Riki Danzaki had a goal ruled out on the half hour mark.

It remained 0-2 at the break, but it didn’t take long after the interval for the comeback and the atmosphere, to kick into gear.

Danzakiscoredlegitimatelyon52minutes, followed by Ruhs on 56 and substitute Matthew Grimalidi on 59, as in the space of a wild seven minutes Western turned a two goal deficit into a one goal lead and their new home into a bear pit.

When Ruhs wrapped things up with his second on 65 minutes, Tarneit was hopping.

Out on the new terraces, the flags were waving and the drums from the Western Service Crew were making a racket, only drowned out by ‘Go West’ blaring from the PA at full-time.

While the crowd was not quite a sellout, with one of the temporary stands not yet approved for use, Aloisi said atmosphere they provided was the best the club had experienced.

“When you have this sort of crowd at AAMI Park, the noise isn’t as big because it’s a bigger stadium,” he said.

“So just having, you know, 3 to 4000 people in a small stadium like this, it gives the boys energy. I’ve said it so many times that we will have such a lift from playing inourownhome and that will end up making it into a fortress. And we started well today by doing that.”

Take pride in Wyndham

Wyndham council is appealing to civic pride in an attempt to curb illegal rubbish dumping across the municipality.

Like other councils on Melbourne’s urban fringe, rubbish dumping has been an ongoing problem in Wyndham, with piles of worn-out tyres, used building materials and household waste often found in greenfield sites, scrub and bushland.

While some of this illegal dumping is done in an organised, large scale basis, Wyndham councillor Robert Szatkowski has urged ratepayers to not make the situation worse.

“Council wants residents to feel proud of their streets and surroundings, not only for aesthetic reasons but for safety and sustainability as well,” Cr Szatkowski said.

Dumped tyres can be particularly hazardous, providing a fire risk as well as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Cr Szatkowski said there were severe environmental impacts from rubbish dumping too.

“Dumping unwanted items can affect flora and fauna and the natural habitat as well as being a health hazard, particularly if there are liquids, paint tins and chemicals that have been dumped.”

He also reminded residents that cleaning up illegally dumped rubbish is costly, with Wyndham reportedly spending more than $1 million annually to do so.

“Dumping places the burden of cost elsewhere and it ends up costing our community in the end,” Cr Szatkowski said.

“The cost of the clean-up and removal is an unfair impost on our whole community as council has to arrange for the removal and in the end it costs Wyndham rate payers.”

Charity collaboration

Western suburbs charity, West Welcome Wagon (WWW) is facing a daunting financial reality. Currently supporting more than 600 households of 2,300 asylum seekers and refugees in the western suburbs, the organisation has found itself with only two months of funding remaining.

Pool open after gastro outbreak

Wyndham swimmers are being urged to take precautionstopreventfurthergastrooutbreaks at pools in the municipality.

The pool hall at AquaPulse, Hoppers Crossing, reopened on Thursday April 4, after being closed on April 2 following a confirmed case of cryptosporidiosis among two of of its patrons.

According to the Western Public Health Unit (WPHU), the two patrons likely acquired the infection after swimming at AquaPulse in March. AquaPulse is operated by Wyn Active, a division of Wyndham council that manages pools, gyms and indoor sports facilities throughout the municipality.

Wyn Active confirmed to Star Weekly

that the Werribee outdoor pool, where a cryptosporidiosis outbreak occurred last month, was not affected and was operating as normal.

Cryptosporidiosis is a type of gastro caused by the parasite Cryptosporidium.

The water-borne infection causes gastro-like symptoms, and can be easily transmitted in many ways, including from contaminated swimming pool water as well as consumption of contaminated food.

WPHU director Dr Finn Romanes said that inMelbourne’swesttherehasbeenasignificant increase in crypto infections this year, with 240 confirmed cases notified since January 1 compared to only 27 in the same period in 2023.

“This is a significant public health issue,”

he said. “All people can become infected after exposure to crypto and there are many unrecognised cases for each confirmed case that is reported to the local public health unit. The most common symptoms of crypto are watery diarrhoea and stomach cramps, which begin one-12 days after exposure and may last several weeks.

“Whilemostillnessismildandself-limiting, younger children, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems are at risk of more severe illness if infected.

“In many instances, WPHU investigations have found that cases are linked to a person having swum in an aquatic facility. Crypto parasites are highly resistant to the levels of chlorine normally found in swimming pools.

“When more than one case is linked to an

aquaticfacilityasthelikelysource,WPHUwill work closely with the Department of Health, the council and with the facility, to ensure hyperchlorination is undertaken to treat the water, and patrons are notified and provided advice about preventing further crypto contamination,” Dr Romanes said.

DrRomanessaidpeoplewhohavehadgastro symptoms should avoid swimming until two weeks after their symptoms are gone and those who have gastro symptoms should get tested.

“We’re being very active in trying to prevent and manage these outbreaks of crypto, and we need the community to help,” he said.

New lights set to illuminate Werribee South

It’ll soon be easier to see after dark in Werribee South with Wyndham council receiving a $150,000 grant from the state government to improve lighting in the area.

The grant from the Department of Environment, Energy and Climate Action has been awarded to Wyndham council under the Coastal and Public Access and Risk Grants Program.

The funds will pay for new lighting to be installed along paths near Werribee South beach and the Werribee South boat ramp, improving night time access for activities such as walking, running, dog walking, cycling and skating.

Wyndham mayor Jennie Barrera said the grant was timely as better lighting in the area was badly needed.

“TheexistinglightingatWerribeeSouthwith ageing light fittings and deteriorating electrical cabling has come to the end of its lifecycle. The funding of new lighting infrastructure is welcomed,” Cr Barrera said.

The need for upgraded lighting in Werribee South was identified during community consultation for a recent master plan for the area, with safety, especially for women, and the risk of collision in dark sections of the path, considered the main reasons why.

Along with funding for new lighting, Cr Barrera was also pleased with the type of lighting to be installed in Werribee South.

Bulk-billing tax ‘threat’

Werribee MP and state treasurer Tim Pallas has been warned that bulk billing within his own electorate will disappear if Victoria’s GP payroll tax isn’t changed.

Last year, Victoria’s State Revenue Office ruled that doctors working in GP clinics were employees and therefore liable for payroll tax.

Previously, receptionists, GPs-in-training, and nurses working in GP clinics were subject to payroll tax, but doctors were considered independent contractors and were exempt.

Dr Ged Foley, who owns the bulk-billing Manor Lakes Medical Centre within the Mr Pallas’ Werribee electorate, said the if the payroll tax isn’t withdrawn he’ll have to start charging patients up front.

“This tax is a tax on bulk billing. There is no viable way for doctors to continue bulk billing and cover the cost of this destructive new tax, patients will end up having to foot the bill,” he said.

Dr Foley said Mr Pallas’ electorate of Werribee had the second highest rate of bulk-billing in the country, meaning his own constituents were especially vulnerable if the payroll tax remained.

According to modelling from the Primary Care Business Council, an additional 22,000 patients will present to the emergency department at Werribee Mercy hospital each year at a cost of around $14.3 million, because of a reduction in bulk-billing services caused by the payroll tax.

Despite a growing campaign from GPs and even the Federal Health Minister Mark Butler expressing concern about the payroll tax, the state government has so far resisted calls to change it, though Treasurer Pallas has previously said he would intervene to prevent GP clinics from closing.

A government spokesperson said support for GP clinics was being provided.

“We have stepped into primary care delivering$32milliontosupportgraduateGPs, establishing 29 Priority Primary Care Centres and rolling out the community pharmacy pilot,“ the spokesperson said.

“There is always more to do to support our GPs and we will continue to meet with representatives from industry as well as local

GPs in the community.“

Thegovernmentisbelievedtobe establishing a working group with peak medical bodies to address issue arising from the payroll tax.

Dr Ged Foley said such were the extra costs on his Manor Lakes surgery from the payroll tax, that it wasn’t just bulk-billing services that were at risk.

“All options have got to be on the table. It is barely viable.”

Fifty arrests in operation

Police in Melbourne’s west arrested 50 people as part of a concerted approach to target youth gang members and other repeat young offenders ahead of the school holidays.

Police conducted arrest warrants, firearm prohibition order checks and bail compliance checks to put known offenders in the area on notice as part of Operation Alliance.

The four-day blitz in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Brimbank resulted in 50 arrests, four offenders being remanded, 15 were released with intent to summons, four were released pending enquiries, and 27 were bailed.

Four vehicles were impounded and 38 penalty notices issued.

Among the incidents, on March 30, a woman was walking home near Heaths Road and Rosella Avenue, Werribee when she was allegedly approached by an unknown male brandishing a hammer. The male allegedly stole her handbag before fleeing in a grey Mitsubishi Lancer.

About 15 minutes later, the vehicle was observed by police on Poplar Boulevard, Truganina. Police tried to intercept the vehicle unsuccessfully before the vehicle was tracked by the Air Wing with stop sticks deployed, leading to the arrest of a 35-year-old Rockbank man.

A hammer was allegedly found in the vehicle, as well as other stolen property. He was charged with armed robbery and will appear in court on May 21.

Little River locals are being encouraged to get their blue suede shoes on to help revive one of the town’s old bluestone buildings.

The Little River Station Shuffle and Supper is being held on Saturday April 20 to raise funds for the restoration and revival of its old ticket office and waiting room.

Built in 1864, the bluestone building on the station platform has been boarded up and unused since the 1970’s, but a group led by Little River resident, Marian De’Rosario is seeking to have it renovated and turned into a community hub.

“We formed a group and applied to Vict Trackscommunityuseofvacantrailbuildings program-inlate2017-initiallyitwasrejected and then in 2021 after a lot of campaigning we are able to get funding under the program,” said Ms De’Rosario who is president of Little River Railway Station Revival.

While the Vic Track funding will pay for

works on the outside of the building, the revival group need to raise funds to fit out and furnish the inside, which is where next Saturday’s dinner dance comes in.

“There will be a three course meal and it’s $80 dollars per head and there’s also raffles and an ipod shuffle,” said Ms Rosario who added that while the name and poster might suggest and 1950’s rockabilly style of event, all types of music and dancing would be on offer.

“There’ll be a mixture, you can pick the music and type of dancing you want.”

The revival group hopes the funds raised will help it become incorporated and cover insurance costs, with further fundraisers planned for later this year and next.

The dinner dance is at the Little River Sports Club from 6pm to 11pm on April 20. For tickets visit: http://surl.li/skdgg

Fostering VCE success

The African Youth Initiative (AYI) has launched a new program to help young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds develop the tools they need to succeed in VCE.

AYI’s Someone To Aspire After (STAA) program provides free monthly group mentoring sessions for students delivered by high-achieving past VCE students.

Chelsea Marangu is a mentor who graduated from MacKillop College in Werribee last year with an ATAR of 90.9.

She said mentoring with STAA since its launch in January has felt like a massive achievement.

“I think so many of the failures in the education system at the moment are due to African students not seeing teachers and role models that look like them, so me being involved in a mentorship program is my way of providing them with a role model,” she said.

AYI has hosted two STAA session at the Tarneit Community Learning Centre with high school mentees from Wyndham, Melton, Brimbank, and even the south-east suburbs, which the program intends on expanding into next.

AYI co-founder and chief executive Robiel Abraham said the response has been really positive from students and community members so far.

“The students said they’ve never been taught this way at their school, it’s been really positive,” he said.

Help count local frogs

Melbourne Water is staging two frog finding events this April to mark Citizen Science Month.

Melbourne Water’s Citizen Science initiative is a community focused program designed to protect and enhance local waterways and environment, monitor wildlife, and educate. The emphasis this month is on frog counting.

The first of two community events willbestagedonFriday,12April,where Melbourne Water, in conjunction with the Werribee River Keeper Association, will be investigating local frog species along the Wyndham Vale waterways.

Using the free Frog Census App, technology that identifies, monitors and locates frog species, attendees will better understand what frog types are native to their local area.

“Our Citizen Science program has been popular with the kids, helping them engage with the environment and the wildlife in their local community,” Jane Petch, Melbourne Water’sWaterwatchCoordinator, said.

“We’re primarily targeting the African community but it’s open to people from all backgrounds.”

Mr Abraham said STAA currently has eight mentors, who all received ATARs of more than 90, and their is currently plenty of

room for more students to join the sessions.

“We want to make a student community that’s inclusive and can encourage students to connect with each other and spur each other on. We love seeing the success of the students… it’s so important to us,” he said.

Frogs perform a range of useful services like pest control, but they can be sensitive to changes in the environment from things like habitat loss, pollution and drought - making them an important indicator of waterway health.

Basketball clinic inspiring for all

More than 120 young people took part in a basketball clinic at Werribee’s Eagle Stadium on Friday morning.

The clinic, run with support of the Ben Simmons Family Foundation, gave particpants aged 12 to 25 the opportunity to receive coaching that might one day have them following in Simmons’ footsteps.

“It went really well. It was very successful,” saidPolyKiyaga, programmanagerforJunubi Wyndham Community Support Group who organised the clinic.

While open to anyone, the majority of the young men and women who took part in the clinic were from Wyndham’s South Sudanese community.

“They see some of their colleagues who have been playing locally go and play in the United States and the Australian Institute of Sport and the NBL and that is very inspiring for them,” said Mr Kiyaga of why basketball has become so popular with young South Sudanese.

Mr Kiyagi thanked Wyndham council for providing Junubi an empowering communities grant to help make the clinic possible and said a soccer clinic was being planned for the coming months.

Family’s historic ‘labour of love’

Nestled quietly amidst the western suburbs lies Overnewton Castle, a historic gem in Keilor celebrating its remarkable 175th anniversary. Hannah Hammoud discovers more about the castle’s rich past and ongoing journey as she chats with Emma Stott who grew up within its storied walls and now manages the castle.

Originally owned by William James Taylor, a visionary who immigrated from Glasgow, Scotland, Overnewton Castle has stood as a testament to his legacy. Taylor’s masterpiece was originially commissioned a single-storey homestead on 13,000 acres of land in 1849 before it was transformed into a Scottish Baronial Castle in 1859 after Taylor returned from a trip abroad. Taylor came to Australia in 1840 – five years after Melbourne’s founding in 1835 –from Scotland at the young age of 22. It took him and his family six months to arrive on Australian shores, bracing the elements on a tiny boat.

‘‘ As beautiful as she is, the house, she’s just a money pit ... It’s definitely a labour of love ’’ - Emma Stott

Taylor’s influence extends far beyond the castle’s walls, with landmarks like Taylors Lakes and Taylors Hill bearing his name, a nod to his pioneering efforts in irrigation and sheep farming.

Fast-forwardtotodayasEmmaStottreflects on her family’s connection to Overnewton Castle, which spans nearly five decades. “Overnewton Castle is 175 years old which is exciting,” she said.

“The original owner was William James Taylor. When he was here he had 13,000 acres in 1849 and so that’s how Taylors Lakes and Taylors Hill got their name, because he irrigated the water from Taylors Lakes to Overnewton Castle so he could water his gardens.

“All the ‘Taylors’ you see in the Brimbank area are all based on William Taylor. He was a very clever man… he would farm sheep and send the wool back to England and Scotland. When he got to Keilor, he moved here when

he married his wife, then his family were here for 105 years. My family bought the house in 1975 – we’re just the third family to have ever owned Overnewton.”

Despiteitsgrandeur,Overnewtonremained a hidden treasure in the western suburbs until recent years. Emma describes it as a “hidden gem”knownmainlytothoseseekingwedding venues or indulging in high tea amidst its lush surroundings.

Born shortly after her family’s acquisition of the property, Emma’s life intertwines with the castle’s history in a deeply personal way.

“In our 50 years of being here, when we got here the house was quite run down but my parentscouldseethatitwasbeautifulbutthey knewithadalotofwork.Therewere36rooms in the house, as kids playing hide and seek was very fun especially if you were in trouble. Our parents, by the time they found us, they forgot why we were in trouble,” Emma said.

“We embraced sharing the life and legacy of William Taylor. I think the most important thing is to keep sharing history – the thing about history is if you don’t share it, it gets forgotten.

“We love sharing the history because it’s such an important time. William Taylor was known as the father of Keilor for all the things he implemented for Keilor whilst he was working as a councillor. It’s really easy to tell his story because it’s so positive.”

Emma’s parents, both doctors, dedicated themselves to restoring the castle to its former glory. The baton now sits in the careful hands of their daughter Emma, who said it is truly a labour of love to maintain and celebrate Overnewton’s heritage.

“We used to climb out windows and climb off the roof, we were quite naughty kids, five of us all up. Five kids growing up here with my Mum and Dad. Mum and Dad were both doctors. Mum liked Overnewton because she could still see patients while she had us kids close by,” Emma said.

“Being both doctors they had a bit of extra income to be able to put back into the restoration of the house. As beautiful as she is, the house, she’s just a money pit.

“We don’t profit here, every dollar we make we put back into restoration of the house, constantly maintaining 36 rooms of a 175 year old building. It’s definitely a labour of love.”

Emma and her family’s commitment extends beyond preservation, with historical tours, high teas, and Scottish events welcoming the community to share in Overnewton’s timeless charm.

“Wegetthesupportfromourlovelylocalsto help keep our business alive. Our little legacy is just to keep sharing the story and keeping William Taylor happy. We love opening our doors for people to come and share in the beautiful history,” Emma said.

“We’re on four and a half acres of beautiful manicured greens with probably one of the oldest trees in Brimbank, a 175 year old oak tree, the heritage is beautiful. We just love opening up the castle.”

View.com.au’s stunning rise shown by new data

View.com.au is the fastest growing residential property portal in Australia with a 102 per cent growth in unique audience since October according to new data.

IPSOS released new data which compared property portal data from October to February with the majority of portals have declined or have had very low growth*.

View’s had a 102 pre cent growth increase, while realestate.com.au was the next best with a 2.2 per cent growth.

Domain’s portal had a decline of 2.6 per cent, while Allhomes’ portal declined by 9.0 per cent and Homely declined by 0.5 per cent.

View.com.au’s chief marketing officer Paul Tyrrell said it’s fantastic to see such strong audience growth on View as they continue to enhance the product and build the brand.

“Our consumer proposition is unique and features over 136,000 properties for sale, however it offers a complete view of the market with access to nearly 11 million properties Australia wide, with buyers able to express interest in properties even if they’re not for sale. All delivered by best in class mapping from Nearmap,” he said.

“The marketing campaign is now in full swing and we’ve seen some massive spikes, particularly from our broadcast partnership with Channel 7’s AFL coverage. To be the fastest growing property portal in the country is a testament to the hard work of the team and a clear demonstration of the need for a competitive alternative in the property portal space.”

“Our agent partners are enjoying the benefit of this audience growth with our premium

to 600,000 with View’s February audience over 80 per cent higher at 1.1 million according to IPSOS data, with users of View spending on average 2.8 times longer on site than they did on Homely.

While internal Google Analytics data is showing nearly 1.7M Users for the month of February on View.

The executive team behind View includes seven ex-Domain executives that successfully took Domain to a $2.2 billion listing on the ASX and the company is headed up by former Domain chief executive Antony Catalano.

“We’re seeing the proposition we’ve built clearly resonating with consumers and we’ve got great momentum,” Mr Catalano said.

“Our freemium model for agents presents a true alternative to the traditional listings model; it’s free to list on View and our low cost premium product is performing incredibly well and delivering strong value for agents and vendors. We can make it free or keep prices low because VMG’s business model is not predicated on listings revenue, where the only option is annual price increases. We’re creating a true property ecosystem that caters to all steps along the property journey.

Review: the Mitsubishi Eclipse

I read somewhere that the government was going to drop financial incentives for plug-in hybrids in April next year.

I’m not surprised. While PHEVs look good onpaper,withtheirultra-lowfuelconsumption figures - the reality is very different.

For example, vehicles such as the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV are good for a claimed 1.9L/100km. But to achieve this figure, you need to recharge the battery every 100km, or the final figure is liable to be considerably higher.

Basically, the battery provides 45km of petrol-free travel for the first 100km travelled, 45kmforthenextandsoon.Don’trechargethe battery and you won’t reap the benefit.

Styling

With seating for five occupants, Eclipse Cross sits between ASX and Outlander in terms of size.

There are three plug-in hybrid versions from which to choose: ES, Aspire and Exceed.

Prices start from $47,290 for ES, $51,240 for Aspire and $55,990 for top of the line Exceed.

All PHEVs come with an auto and all three are underpinned by all-wheel drive.

Standard kit includes cloth trim, two-zone climate air conditioning, 18-inch alloys, push buttonstart,LEDdaytimelights, cruisecontrol and rear parking sensors.

Aspire adds suede and synthetic leather trim, heated front seats, power-adjust driver’s seat, LED headlights, front parking sensors, along with adaptive cruise control, 360-degree camera, blind spot warning, lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert.

Exceed adds full leather, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, power-adjust passenger seat, built-in navigation, head-up display and a double sunroof – plus an ultrasonic mis-acceleration mitigation system.

The PHEV received some minor updates earlier last year, including a power tailgate for Exceed and V2L (the ability to power external equipment) for Aspire and Exceed. latest USB-C ports or a 12-volt socket in the cargo area. Ditto rear air vents.

It’s covered by a 10-year 200,000km standard warranty, provided that it’s always serviced at a Mitsubishidealership,otherwiseitdropstofive years and 100,000km.

So be wary if you’re consistently averaging more than 20,000km a year.

The battery warranty is for eightyears/160,000km battery warranty.

Infotainment

Infotainment comprises a now small 8.0-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth with voice control, AM/FM and DAB+ digital radio, wired Apple CarPlayandAndroidAutoandaneight-speaker Mitsubishi-branded sound system.

Engines/transmissions

The powertrain comprises a 2.4-litre petrol engine with two electric motors, one for the front and one for the back axle, plus a 13.8 kWh battery.

The engine produces 94kW of power and 199Nm of torque, while the electric motorsdeliver60kW/137Nmand70kW/195Nm apiece.

A combined figure is not provided, but throttle response is sharp thanks to the instant torque from the electric motors. Drive is to all four wheels through a single-speed transmission and is remarkably smooth.

Safety

Standard safety includes seven airbags, rear view camera, automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning, plus an ultrasonic mis-acceleration mitigation system. The latter reduces the chance and severity of hitting obstacles when the driver mistakenly presses the accelerator when stationary or at speeds of up to 10km/h.

Driving

Eclipse has grown a little in size since

launch. It now offers a pleasant, comfortable environment, with more rear legroom and a larger boot.

The cool two-piece rear window has gone, replaced by a conventional and probably cheaper one-piece unit.

A revised instrument cluster displays engine speed as well as EV charge levels and battery use - but alas no digital speedo.

The front seats and steering wheel are heated, but cooling would have been a better option given our climate.

Although larger overall, plug-in hybrid versions have a smaller boot than the standard model because of the space occupied by the battery pack. At the same time the spare wheel has been replaced by a tyre repair kit.

The PHEV system is ‘EV-biased’ and prioritises EV mode wherever possible, but can deploy series or parallel hybrid modes when required.

In EV mode (available from 0-135km/h), the PHEV is powered by the front and rear electric drivemotors, drawingcurrentfromthebattery.

In series hybrid mode (available from 0-70km/h), the car continues to use the battery to power the front and rear motors, while the petrol engine is engaged to run the generator to charge the battery while driving.

This mode is also automatically activated when the driver wants maximum acceleration, or for example when driving uphill or when battery charge is low.

In this mode, the vehicle will attempt to revert to EV Mode as often as possible for maximum efficiency and minimum emissions.

In parallel hybrid mode (available above 70km/h), the PHEV operates like a traditional hybrid.

This means the petrol engine drives the front wheels in tandem with the front electric motor via the multi-mode front transaxle, while the rear electric motor drives the rear wheels.

Once again, the vehicle is configured to revert to EV mode or series hybrid mode whenever possible.

There are five steps that add drag when you take your foot off the throttle, sending energy

back to the battery.

But, unlike other vehicles of this kind, you still need to apply the brakes. A button marked ‘SAVECHRG’suggestsyoucansavethebattery charge for use later, but it’s a bit confusing.

The whole PHEV thing might sound a bit complicated, but there’s no need to worry because the car takes care of everything — everything that is apart from charging.

ThePHEVhasACType2andDCCHAdeMO style input sockets.

Using the supplied cable and a regular 10A powerpoint it takes seven hours to fully charge.

It’s also supplied with a second cable for faster Mode 3 charging using a wall charger which takes four hours, while 0-80 per cent with a full-blown commercial DC charger takes 25 minutes.

The Mitsubishi Remote Control app allows drivers to plan and activate battery charging remotely via the app, to take advantage of off-peak electricity tariffs.

Mitsubishi claims 55km of electric range, but that’s under the old NEDC standard. Under the newer, more stringent WLTP system, it’s actually 45km - but 55 sounds better.

Basically, if you live in the ‘burbs, Mitsubishi claimstheelectricrangeissufficienttopopinto the city and back without needing to recharge. We reckon it’s a costly option and a lot of mucking around for little in return.

The cynical might suggest it has more to do with satisfying emissions requirements across the range rather than delivering real world benefits.

At the same time, because it’s a plug-in hybrid, you don’t need to worry about being stranded. When the juice runs out, the petrol engine kicks in.

Hybrid questions aside, the PHEV is a heavy car and this has implications for ride and handling.

There are five drive modes: tarmac, snow, gravel, normal or economy.

Normal or Eco are what most urban motorists will use, while tarmac is in effect a sport mode in which the car becomes tauter, sportier and more responsive.

The ride is harsher on anything apart from smooth bitumen, even though they’ve done a bit of work on the rear suspension. You feel all the little imperfections and the car can take longer than normal to settle as it continues to bounce up and down on the suspension.

That weight means and the fact the car sits relatively high and also means it has a tendency to run wide in corners, with squeal hard braking and lift-off oversteer when braking late and hard into corners.

The steering lacks any sort of feel. In fact, you can waggle the steering wheel (technical term) from side to side with little or no effect on the direction of travel.

It’s like trying to change direction in the billy carts we used to build as kids in the backyard with wood pinched from building sites. A sports car it is not.

With a 45-litre tank, it takes regular 91 unleaded.

We were getting 6.5L/100km after more than 800km, bearing in mind that the trip computer in Mitsubishis are a law unto themselves.

That’s nowhere near the claimed 1.9L/100km, but unfortunately, we never had the opportunity to recharge the battery after the initial charge had been depleted.

Interestingly, 39 per cent of our time was spent driving in EV mode - not sure how.

This compares with 7.7L/100km for the 1.5-litre turbocharged all-wheel drive version of the car.

On a final note, our test vehicle was fitted with Mitsubishi-branded roof racks, which were the source of an annoying hum at speed.

Summing up

At $14,750 more than the regular model, the Eclipse Cross PHEV Aspire is a big ask. For a little less you can get into something like MG’s ZS Long Range EV, a fully electric SUVwith440kmofrangethatdoesnotrequire charging as frequently.

While buyers might be coming around to the benefits of EVs, they have demonstrated a reluctance to pay the outrageous prices that manufacturers are demanding for them.

Fixture reveals one division for WFL women’s

The Western Football League will have just one women’s division this season.

The league has revealed its fixture with just nine teams down from last season when they had 14 teams in two divisions.

Last season’s runners-up Caroline Springs areback, butwillhaveoneteaminsteadoftwo like the past two seasons.

Werribee Centrals and Parkside Spurs, which also made division 1 finals, will have sides, along with Yarraville Seddon Eagles, who were also in division 1.

Division 2 premiers West Footscray will be hoping to continue its momentum, while division 2 runners-up Wyndhamvale and NorthSunshinearetheotherreturningteams.

The Suns, who are coached by former Point Cook Centrals coach Leanne Meyer, are the one new team in the competition.

Division 1 premiers Spotswood, which had two sides last season, won’t field a side this season.

Glen Smith, who was appointed coach for thisseason, toldStarWeeklyinearlyFebruary that it wasn’t looking good in terms of getting a team up.

A big chunk of the playing group followed their former coaches.

Braybrook announced on Facebook in March that it wouldn’t have the numbers for a side this year, while Point Cook Centrals won’t either.

WFL football general manager Luke Henry said long term they wanted to get the competition back to two healthy divisions.

“Obviously it’s no surprise we’ve gone from two divisions to one with the number of teams,” he said.

“We are looking forward to the season itself and the structure that we have in place for it. We are always about growth and we want to grow footy in the female space up from under-18 level to senior women.

“There’s always some challenges in fielding

teams and sides.

“We’re looking forward to what is ahead and want to branch back out to two divisions.”

Henry said they won’t split the competition during the season, with it to stay one division throughout.

He said one of the big things they’re looking at doing is changing how finals look for senior women and under-18s.

“Anexcitingthingwearegoingtodoishave senior women’s football and under-19s finals that align.

“We want to show that pathway and have a female football day for the grand finals which we’re excited to do.”

The WFL women’s season kicks off on Friday night with the Spurs hosting the Suns under lights.

Dall’Oste is finals ready

Western United is better prepared for the A-League Women’s finals this time round according to goalkeeper Alyssa Dall’Oste. United stunned the competition 12 months ago when it made the grand final in its first season, falling short against Sydney FC in the decider.

Now through to its second final series after finishing third, United is keen to go a step better.

“Last season we didn’t know what we were getting into,” Dall’Oste said in the lead up to finals.

“A lot of us were new in the A-League. We didn’t know what to expect. We’re better prepared to hopefully go one better this year.

“Second place is a little bittersweet. We’ve made it that far, but you didn’t get what you really wanted. You don’t want to feel like that again.”

Dall’Oste said they’d been putting a lot

of hard work in behind the scenes to get themselves ready.

She said having moved into their new home in Tarneit was also proving a major advantage in preparing for the finals.

“It’s nice to be preparing in the new facility,” shesaid.“Everythingisforus.We’renothaving to move stuff all the time. Last year to this year, we had a place but not a home.

“It has everything we need to like ice baths.”

Personally, this season has been different for Dall’Oste than last season.

Last season, she came on in one game to make her A-League Women’s debut.

This season she has stepped up since the departureofHillaryBeall, havingstartedseven games.

She’s kept the starting goalkeeper role despite United bringing in Danish goalkeeper Kathrine Larsen.

Dall’Oste said this season had been really good personally.

“It’s been a long time coming and I’ve been

Wyndham’s hot start in the Big V

Wyndham has got off to a strong start in the Big V, with both the women’s and men’s championship division teams recording wins in round one.

The women had a fruitful first outing, as they travelled down the coast to take on Bellarine Storm on Saturday night.

Wyndham’s nine point victory (81-72) was built off of a strong first half, where they built a 20 point lead before the major break.

The Storm were able to claw their way back into the match with an impressive third term that saw them outscore Wyndham 21-7, but it wasn’t enough to get them over the line.

Wyndham captain Amanda Paschall picked up from where she left off last year and was her team’s leading scorer with 22 points on 47 per cent shooting. She also managed six rebounds, six assists and an impressive six steals.

Wyndham played with a rotation of nine players, each of whom contributed to the scoring.

Wyndham’s championship men team also put together a strong first outing against Shepparton away from home.

Wyndham defeated the Gators 85-71 off the back of a strong second half where they outscored the Gators by 19 points.

preparing myself,” she said.

“I’ve been given this opportunity and I’ve stepped up and done my job.”

Dall’Oste said she had learnt a lot from Beall in her time at the club, with the pair really pushing each other.

United had the weekend off with a week off beforefinalsstarted.UnitedhosttheNewcastle Jets on April 13 at 6.30pm. United’s men’s side will play beforehand.

Dall’Oste said they still feel like they are the underdogs entering the finals.

“This is our second consecutive finals series, we can’t we seen as the underdog forever,” she said. “We are still new kicks on the block and we’re still enjoying being underdogs. We’re better prepared than last year.

“Wehaveafewextragamesinthefinalseries too so it will be about game management and we can’t take any team lightly.

“We face Newcastle who we haven’t been able to clinch a win against them. We have something to prove.”

Last season they finished top of the ladder but were unable to progress to the grand final after losing to Hume.

But they got busy in the off season, signing Hume star Troyce Manassa, a move that has paid off immediately.

Manassa had a game-high 26 points and also tallied 10 rebounds and five assists.

Just 11 of Wyndham’s total points came from bench scoring.

Darrien Herbert (19 points) and Adetomi Ayilari (11 points) were the other key contributing starters for Wyndham.

Both Wyndham’s championship men’s and women’s sides will play round two matchups on Saturday.

Reds show positive signs despite Phoenix loss

Hoppers Crossing took a step in the right direction on Saturday despite not coming away with the points in the FV state league 2 north-west.

TheRedsstartedtheseasonindisappointing fashion and were keen to bounce back on Saturday against Altona East Phoenix.

The Phoenix proved too strong on this occasion, winning 2-1, but for Reds coach Kevin Smart it wasn’t all negatives.

“The first game was really disappointing,” he said. “How we played we didn’t deserve to get anything out of it.

“This week was a big difference. They are a side that should win the league.

“It was disappointing not to get the result. I think a draw overall would have been a fairer result.”

Liam Zacharias was the goal scorer for the Reds.

Smart said the performance they put out would give confidence to the playing group.

“We have a young team, a whole new side together,” he said. “A lot are under-23. It gives thatconfidenceandthathastobethestandard every week.

“We want to be challenging up the top, not down the bottom. A little bit more experience as we go along will help

“We are creating chances and playing well, just not getting the result in the league.”

It hasn’t been all bad for the Reds, who are through to the fifth round of the Australia Cup for only the second time.

They knocked off state league 1 north-west side Brimbank Stallions in the previous round. The Reds face state league 3 north-west side Westvale on April 23 in round five.

Before then, they face Westvale in the state league competition on Saturday.

Smart said it would be another challenge.

“Anothertopteam,”hesaid.“They’vescored nine goals in the first two games.

“They are another team aiming for that top

two. We will go out and try and attack and try and get the result.

“We won’t change the way that we play. We’ll try and score goals and play proactive football.”

In state league 3 north-west, Point Cook suffered a 3-0 loss to the Sebastopol Vikings, after the Vikings led 2-0 at half time.

In state league 4 west, West Point got its first win of the season, beating the Westside Strikers, 1-0.

The goal to Marcus Sherif came in the first half.

Truganina Hornets are still without a win, losing to Balmoral, 2-0 on Saturday.

In state league 5 west, Wyndham had a 1-0 win against Spring Hills. It was Wyndham’s first win of the season.

Tarneit United had a bye.

New era for Centrals

There’s been a slight changing of the guard at Werribee Centrals but nothing will change for the Geelong and District Netball League club.

Last season’s A-grade premiers, the Centurions have several players from that team not planning on taking to the court this season.

Co-netball coordinator Ellie Tubbs said they were excited for another big season on court.

“We’ve got all four senior teams and four junior teams, it’s always good to fill all eight sides,” she said.

“There’s lots of new faces across all the grades and all the age groups. Lots of young people, which is always good.”

Jenni Rothery has taken over as coach. Tubbssaidatthisstageshewouldn’tbeplaying but they were hoping to convince her to.

She said it was exciting to see someone else from within the club step up and take on the role.

“She’s a great leader on court and will be a great mentor for a lot of players,” Tubbs said.

“She has a deep knowledge of the club. It’s always nice to have outside influences in the club, but it’s always good to have a strong pool of people to step up and take on those roles.” Rothery isn’t the only out on court for the Centurions.

Tubbs herself isn’t playing, while Nicole Weatherley, who played her 300th game last season, isn’t playing at this stage.

Joining them on the side lines is Amanda O’Malley, who is pregnant. O’Malley won the league best and fairest last season along with the grand final most valuable player.

Tubbs said it means it will be a slightly different side this season, but there will still be some familiar faces.

“We all love the club and will all still be around,” she said.

“Melissa Prismall brings such experience and Natasha Dimkovski is only 21 and has been in the A-grade team since she was 15.

“Steph Kearney is back and Alual Garang, who won the under-19 best and fairest last season and played A-grade will get more opportunities.

“Caitlin Hendricksen is also back. It gives them more opportunity to play some minutes and strengthen that bond.

“Most of been there at least five years and who won a couple of premierships with the team.

“It’sexcitingtohavedepthinourownranks and we didn’t have to look too far to fill spots.”

The Centurions kicked off their season on Saturday against Corio.

It wasn’t the start they were after, losing 48-35.

Tahlia Hartney shot 20 goals for the Centurions.

Tubbs said despite the changes to the squad, nothing changes.

A tough period for Werribee City has continued in the Victorian Premier League 1 competition. The Bees faced Melbourne Victory on Friday night . Victory scored once in the first half, before the Bees were left short with three red cards. Victory was able to come away with a comfortable 4-1 win. The Bees sit in 13th spot after eight rounds with only one win.

GDFL

Werribee Centrals started their Geelong and District Football League season on a winning note, beating Corio on Saturday. Corio led at quarter time by three points, with the margin reduced to two at the main break. Werribee guns represent Vic

Werribee gun Kye Declase jumped at the chance to be part of the Victorian Football League representative side that took on the South Australian National Football League on Saturday.

The two leagues faced off for the first time since 2017 as part of the AFL’s Gather Round held in South Australia on the weekend.

In a tough-fought contest, the VFL was left to rue missed opportunities in front of goal as it fell short, losing 10.5 (65)- 7.9 (51).

The VFL controlled the first term and led by 13 points at the first break, before the SANFL worked back into the game.

The VFL still led by two points at the main break.

A goal less third quarter had the VFL with worktodointhefinalquarter.Itwasn’tableto bridge the gap, falling short.

DelcasewasoneoftheBigV’sbest,finishing with 20 disposals.

Speaking after the game, Declase said it was a really good experience.

“It was a real honour and privilege,” he said. “It’s always been something that I’ve wanted to do and I was so happy that it has come back.

“I put my hand up for selection as soon as I could.”

Declase was surrounded by Werribee teammates in the Victorian side.

Dom Brew captained the side, while Nick Hayes, Hudson Garoni, Nathan Cooper and Jack Henderson all played in the game.

Louis Pinnuck was a late out, having initially been selected in the final side.

Declase said it showed plenty about Werribee to have the most players in the competition in that team.

“There was good representation from Werribee Football Club,” he said. “It shows the culture of the club we have down there.

“It was really good and I think we represented Werribee really well and we all played to our strengths.

“We showcased that talent last year making it to the grand final to have six or seven representatives in the Big V squad, I can’t be prouder of the boys.”

Declaseandthegroupwillquicklyturntheir attention to round three of the VFL season.

The Tigers will be at home on Saturday for the

first time this season against Richmond.

Declase said they were focused on what was ahead of them. The side is undefeated after the first two rounds.

“We put that behind this week,” he said.

“We have a tough game this weekend and boys are all across the processes.”

Declase, who has been one of the stars for the Tigers for a number of years, is one of the key leaders this season.

Withthedepartureofanumberofkeyguys, he said there’s others who are stepping up.

“It has been really good,” he said. “We’ve

got players that have really stepped up and taking on roles as the next leaders of the club.

“It has been really good. Players like Jaelen Pavlidis and Matthew Keast have been really good on the track.”

Declase said the group has set high expectations for this season.
