Citynews A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
OUT AND ABOUT
We rounded out 2022 in true Festival City style, with a spectacular fireworks display over the Maribyrnong River to usher in 2023. I was pleased to be among the crowd for our first New Year’s Eve fireworks at Footscray Park since 2019. An estimated 20,000 revellers gathered on the Eastern Lawn to reminisce with Jebediah songs and dance with Bluey and Bingo. These festivities are just the tip of the entertainment iceberg coming our way this summer. We’ll also be welcoming back Midsumma Westside as part of the Midsumma Festival, Australia’s premier queer arts and cultural festival. With 21 individual events taking place from 21 January to 12 February across four local government areas, the Midsumma program delivers something for everyone to enjoy. If you are looking to explore the rich history of our municipality, please join us for HIDDEN Footscray, which features artworks by six local artists. Delve deep beneath the cosmopolitan charm to uncover hidden stories of lost heritage, unknown traditional cultural practices, forgotten memories and more. The exhibition is being hosted at Footscray Community Arts from 14 January to 26 March. For more information about both Midsumma Westside and HIDDEN Footscray, please visit maribyrnong.vic.gov.au With school holidays well underway, if you are looking for another way to entertain your children – we have great news, the BIG Summer Read challenge is now taking place at our libraries. The challenge is designed to ensure young readers continue to be exposed to books and reading over their long summer break. It’s open to ages 0-18 and, for every ten books read until 31 January, participants go in the draw to win prizes! eBooks can be borrowed online and physical books in person at any of our five branches.
