f you’re reading this, it is likely that you know about the Star® Roses and Plants mission to bring the best plants to the world’s gardens. What I also hope to be true is that you see the care and effort we put into making sure our new introductions go beyond being pretty or interesting. That said, if a plant is introduced, you can bet we have answered yes to one or more of these questions:

• Is the plant unique from what is already on the market?

• Does the plant solve a problem for our customer and the end-consumer?

• Is the product a game changer?

Together with our breeding partners at the JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State University, we have developed some exceptional genetics that meet all of these criteria. The Garden Gems™ Cercis series of small ornamental trees combines the structure and size of a Japanese Maple with the flowering, hardiness, and native toughness of a Redbud.

The trees in this series offer a compact habit that is perfect for large decorative containers and small gardens. Upright and weeping forms and a striking range of green, yellow, and burgundy foliage colors increase the versatility and architectural appeal of the plant in the landscape.

In 2024, we roll out the first two introductions of the series with Garden Gems™ Emerald and Garden Gems™ Amethyst. Emerald produces lush green foliage that has a tinge of red when the new growth appears. In contrast, Amethyst offers rich burgundy foliage that has good color retention through the heat of the summer. Both exhibit abundant spring flowering and the impressive habit previously described.

Can you see the way this series goes above and beyond to meet our three criteria? The unique habit and four seasons of interest provided by the foliage and flowering opens so many opportunities for our customers to reach new markets. Garden Gems™ will provide what consumers are looking for in a compact, flowering tree for small

Ispaces. And, while we know this will be a great product for our tree growers, it can also be grown by container shrub nurseries, greatly expanding your customer base.

While we knew these accolades internally, it was a wonderful stamp of approval from the industry to have Garden Gems receive a Garden Center Group Retailers’ Choice Award at Cultivate’23. Now we are bringing this award-winning introduction to you!

You can learn more about Garden Gems™ and all of this year’s introductions on pages 10–11. As always, we thank you for your continued support of the programs and products at Star® Roses and Plants, and we will continue to work hard every day to bring unique products to the world’s gardens.

OUR WOODY and EDIBLE ORNAMENTAL PLANTS PROGRAM

Star® roses and plants has been a leader in woody ornamental plant introductions since we brought the Blue and China Hollies to market in 1970. Fifty years later, we continue to provide top-performing and innovative genetics to the industry.

The Woody and Edible Ornamental Plants Program is a robust collaboration between many departments and external partners. Our top-notch Research and Development team works towards targeted goals for our internal breeding programs and manages our field and container trials based in West Grove, Pennsylvania and Arroyo Grande, California. Esteemed breeders join this work in a global partnership to produce the best and most reliable genetics.

Potential introductions undergo rigorous assessments by prominent trial partners all over the country. Thorough zone testing, intense trialing in containers and in-ground, and comparison trials against the current industry standard ensure all new genetics are prime to fill specific gaps in the market.

Successful new introductions are again fostered by an internal and external partnership. Together, our Supply Team and network of over 20 supplier partners build up and support the movement of young plant inventory. These industry-respected suppliers are the foundation of our supply chain and provide nationwide access to our introductions. (pg. 06)

Our full inventory of woody and edible plants, the Ornamental Tree Program, and the Bushel and Berry® and Bloomables® brands are supported by comprehensive and multi-channel marketing solutions. Flexible programs and premium-branded packaging provide helpful options to retailers. Trade-focused advertising positions our genetics in industry-leading publications and is backed by a robust resource library on the Industry Professionals section of our website. (pg. 07) Our Marketing Department is committed to demonstrating what makes our introductions unique.

At Star® Roses and Plants, we are focused on hardworking people and hardworking plants. Our Territory Managers and Customer Service Representatives know which varieties work in their areas and take a regional approach to serving their customers’ needs. Providing quality and in-depth information on our plants remains a top priority.

This dedicated collaboration of knowledgeable experts allows us to introduce great plants that are truly innovative and uniquely beautiful. With an equipped supply chain, strategic marketing support, and flexibility for the grower, landscaper, and retailer, we are confident you will be successful with our plants.

Our in-house breeding division at Star® Roses and Plants is a team of experienced breeders and scientists who apply traditional and modern techniques in plant genetics to the development of industry-worthy and consumer-friendly ornamental flowering plants. The breeding team supplies a steady pipeline of new varieties to Star® Roses and Plants for evaluation and trials each year.

Once a plant is identified as having market potential, it undergoes a rigorous multi-regional, multi-year trialing program. In-ground and container trials are performed across regional zones to ensure the final product will be successful for both home gardeners and industry professionals. Our trialing partners include public gardens, nursery growers, and universities, whose reliable feedback helps us decide whether a plant makes it to market.

A new selection must do more than look pretty; it must fill a market need. Whether it’s our groundbreaking compact Cercis (Garden Gems™ pg. 10–11) or our fast-to-finish Mahonia (Groovy Glow™ and Funky Flow™ pg. 15–16), our woody, tree, and edible offerings will always include breakthrough genetics that offer distinct advantages in production and in the garden.

SUPPORT FOR INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS

The p roduction d epartment at Star® Roses and Plants is a busy crew that produces plants for liner sales and performs functions to support the Research Department with all of their grow-out needs. Whether it’s transplanting seedlings, shifting evaluation plants to a larger container size, or even lending a hand planting in the evaluation fields, Production is always involved. Additionally, the Production Department oversees the growing for all departments at Star® Roses and Plants from forcing and timing varieties for tradeshows like MANTS or Cultivate to monitoring and scheduling plants for Marketing photography needs, and building up new introduction stock, they do it all. Every breakthrough variety that has been introduced by Star® Roses and Plants has passed through or originated from our West Grove, Pennsylvania location and has been cared for by the Production Team. It’s not easy to juggle the responsibilities of growing plants for wholesale purposes and research needs simultaneously, as both functions have very different schedules and protocols, but they are equally handled with superior attention to detail and care. It takes a dedicated group of individuals to accomplish the vast number of growing tasks at our Pennsylvania greenhouse.

Star® Roses and Plants was the first facility in the U.S. certified to ship plants grown under the Systems Approach to Nursery Certification (SANC) Program, an initiative developed under the guidance of the National Plant Board, AmeriHort, USDA and state agencies. SANC is a voluntary, audit-based program that uses a holistic approach to reduce pest risks associated with plant trade.

Star® Roses and Plants benefits from being SANC certified in that we know we’re producing responsibly farmed products with improved plant health through complete transparency with the state’s regulatory officials. Buyers benefit from sourcing products from SANC certified growers because they’re receiving products that have met enhanced, state audited and certified health standards.

@bushelandberry
Federal Road, Suite 6, West Grove PA 19390 This is document intended to provide Bushel and Berry® growers information and resources to help with general aspects of growing Bushel and Berry®. Cane Berry Nursery Nutrition & Disease Management Webbing and yellow-spotty leaf damage: Spider mites Weak growth and pale leaves, poor rooting: Typically due to phytophthora root rot 1. ARTHROPOD PESTS a. Spider mites Several species of spider mites are a common pest of cane berries, though pest pressure varies regionally. Spider mites are typically present at low populations, but can build very quickly, particularly in hot and dry conditions. Management Much of mite management involves encouraging predator mite populations that keep the spider mites below economically damaging levels. This typically involves careful use of insecticides so as not to kill the predators and “flare” the pest mites. Inoculative releases of effective predators such as Amblyseius (Neoseiulus) fallacis early in the growth cycle can have great benefits. Predators may need to be re-released throughout the growing cycle predator populations get out of balance through practices such as the use of insecticides, or through shearing of the plants. Misting leaves will also slow spider mite population growth, though this can lead to disease issues. When mites flare beyond the capabilities of being corrected by predators, or before shipping, acaricides may be used to correct populations. For homeowners, many home remedies are available to control populations effectively on small scale. b. Foliar feeding insects A number of foliar feeding insects can be sporadic pests of cane berries in short-cycle nursery productions. If damage is noticed, carefully inspect leaves and compare with images and descriptions. 2.
