$5m Pioneer Rd Geelong charity seeks $500,000 for children’s safety works underway WORK has begun on a $5 million duplication of Waurn Ponds’ Pioneer Rd, South Barwon MP Andrew Katos has announced. Mr Katos said the project began this week to upgrade the road between Princes Hwy and Waurn Ponds Creek. Residential and commercial development has increased pressure on the road in recent years, with new community facilities and Geelong’s bypass adding further traffic. “With the ongoing development in the area it’s important we upgrade this road to remove the bottleneck and cater for increased traffic,” Mr Katos said. The road was a focus of lobbying for funding commitments during the 2010 state election. The project would be complete in 2013 “weather permitting”, Mr Katos said.

BY JOHN VAN KLAVEREN DEAKIN University has made nine Geelong staff redundant after announcing a new digital strategy, according to a union. National Tertiary Education Union Deakin branch president Steve Mackey said the redundancies were part of ongoing job losses at the universtiy. The job cuts were predominantly information technology workers. Deakin had pledged a revolutionary digital future dubbed “cloud learning” while simultaneously axing staff skilled in “this way of working”, Mr Mackey said.

continue.” Ms Johnston said Bravehearts was seeking support from business, school and day care groups as well as general residents. She urged involvement in White Balloon Day. “It can be as simple as tying a white balloon to your letterbox or as grand as hosting a fundraising function. “While we have an ambitious target to raise $500,000, everyone can do their bit. The issues are serious but the onus is on making the events fun where everyone can participate.” Ms Johnston said more information was available at whiteballoonday.com.au.

A GEELONG-BASED charity protecting children from sexual assault wants $500,000 “to make Australia the safest place in the world for raising a child”, according to its founder. Bravehearts’ Hetty Johnston said money from White Balloon Day on September 17 would go toward education, prevention and counselling programs. “We are winning the battle one child at a time but there’s a long way to go,” she said. “White Balloon Day is about encouraging kids to come forward and break the silence while we raise necessary funds to ensure vital support networks and programs can

The “contradiction” had puzzled the union. “We can only conclude that the current massive television marketing and re-branding campaign and the elaborate multi-campus launch of the LIVE strategy has cost millions of dollars,” Mr Mackey said. Deakin notified the union of 16 redundancies between June 27 and July 10. The university cut four jobs from its Institute of Teaching and Learning, seven in its Knowledge Media Division, three from School of Information Systems and one each from

Facilities Services Division and School of Architecture and Building. “Eight positions were at the Waterfront campus, seven at Burwood and one at Waurn Ponds,” Mr Mackey said. “Beside these forced redundancies, a number of people in the above areas have felt that they have had to quit voluntarily or reduce their time fraction. “The holders of some contracts have been told not to expect renewal.” A Deakin spokesman confirmed cuts of up to 24 staff.
