IN DISCUSSING global warming, Allan Barron (Letters, December 2) said science was only concerned with past events and that predictions about the future were unreliable. He seemed to ignore the fact that the practice of science is based around making rigorous and carefully tested hypotheses about the future. Most of us seem to trust scientists when they make predictions about machines continuing to function or planes staying in the air. In any event, there is ample evidence to show global warming is already with us. It is untrue that “in the past 11 years there has been a slight cooling”. The World Meteorological Organisation has concluded that 13 of the warmest years were in the past decade and a half and 2011 concludes a decade that ties as the hottest measured. The alarming decline in the extent and thickness of Arctic sea ice is undeniable. Despite his disdain for prediction, Mr Barron confidently stated that in five years predictions about global warming would be shown to be bogus. I do not wish to wait for more data. In five years we need to be well on the way to transforming our energy production into renewable energy and changing the way we transport ourselves and our goods. I do not suggest everyone should be vegetarian but we do have a responsibility to ensure animals killed for human consumption are spared unnecessary pain and suffering. In the UK one in five abattoirs is already fitted with CCTV cameras. Compulsory installation of CCTV cameras in abattoirs would help reduce breaches of minimal protection laws. NEVILLE Whitely, of Geelong and District Football League, didn’t convince me about the impact of proposed gaming machine laws (Independent, December 2) and I am sure no one who has looked at the facts would agree with him either. His establishment can have all of the low-intensity poker machines he likes and no one would have to sign up to Federal Government’s proposed precommitment scheme. I wonder why he neglected to mention this salient point? It couldn’t possibly be that his club relies for its existence on gamblers’ losses on high-intensity machines? As for the so-called benefits to sport clubs, I see no evidence of this. Council has spent a boot-load of money upgrading facilities at eastern suburbs over the past few years. I have no objection to my rates supporting community groups but why is this even necessary if the poker machines are such a big money spinner for the clubs? Poker machines are the cause of untold misery in the parts of Geelong where the people can least afford it. The Government’s measures are a tiny step to trying to redress some of the worst effects of one of the most addictive forms of gambling. Mr Whiteley should get on the winning side of the debate and adjust to the new reality. His clubs and the city will be the winners. Kevin V Russell Geelong
