akington St’s Winter’s Cafe has been cooking up a storm since new owners took over in May. Matt Connell, 25 and Andrew Steere, 30, are proud of the “young, fresh” vibe they have injected into the Newtown cafe. “I think what sets us apart is our young and dynamic team and that we emphasise fresh, local and seasonal produce,” Matt says. “We are yes people, not no people, and are very passionate about the industry.” A huge drawcard for many Winter’s regulars is the fantastic all-day breakfast. Other favourite dishes include

pork belly baguette and housemade banana bread. Matt says the cafe continually changes its menu depending on the season and availability of produce. “We regularly rotate our specials and always have something fresh and healthy available. Our aim is to provide contemporary and exciting food backed with great customer service.” The cafe’s modern, fast-paced atmosphere has proved so popular that Matt recommends booking in advance for weekends. “Our recent achievements in the Golden Plate Awards have really boosted business,” he says.
Alfresco and sit-down dining areas can accommodate up to 70 people, while takeaways are also available. The cafe provides catering and functions for large or small groups either upstairs or downstairs. “We like to appeal to every one of all age groups,” Matt says. Matt and Andrew have simply re-branded the cafe without changing its name. “As the cafe already had a good reputation, to bring the business up to speed we changed the logo, did a complete refit of the interior and modernised the menu,” Matt says.
