Hazardous road When Peter McGowan moved to his home near Edinburgh Road 40 years ago it was still a skinny dirt track. Decades later the road has been sealed but remains the same width as it has always been, something that is now worrying local residents as traffic seems to increase with more students attending both Edinburgh College’s kindergarten, primary and high school, as well as nearby Billanook College. Residents are now calling for Yarra Ranges Council to advocate at the State election for funding to upgrade the road and widen it, the main concern being that larger vehicles, including buses, are having to pull partly off the road to pass one another. “My concern is that there’s repeated accidents or near misses on this road because the road is too narrow and the buses that travel up and down there are wider than the lanes,” Peter said. Yarra Ranges Council has committed to drainage works but residents don’t see this as the main issue. While flooding can occur when there are heavy rains, residents are more worried about the damage to cars from pulling into the drainage ditches to allow large vehicles to pass. With other roads in the shire have already been improved with gutters and widening, the group of residents Star Mail spoke to would like to see something similar occur on their road to ensure the safety of drivers. The lack of a school crossing was also raised by those families with young children who have to battle the road each morning and afternoon, particularly in summer as they choose to walk to school. The council has already identified school crossing improvements as a major election priority. To read more, turn to page 4
