‘Blows my mind’

Warburton photographer Suzanne Phoenix has been named as a finalist in the National Photographic Portrait Prize placing her work amongst some of Australia’s best photography talent.

Ms Phoenix stands out from the 75 strong cohort as she is one of a select few photographers to have two portraits make the final cut from over 3000 entries nationwide.

The Warburton artist said she was “gobsmacked” when she realised two of her portraits were listed among the group of 80.

“When I do the maths, I think it must be me and maybe a few others who had two selected ... It blows my mind,” she said.

Ms Phoenix had been submitting her work to the national competition for five years now.

“It feels quite unreal and amazing. It’s very validating, that’s how I feel.”

But Ms Phoenix missed the phone call that would deliver her the big news, leaving her to find out through a voice message.

“I was driving to work listening to voice messages and I heard a voice say, ‘hi, it’s so and so from Canberra ... ’ ‘You’ve been selected ... ’ Then, ‘you’ve had two works selected.’ I kind of stopped breathing and got a little bit emotional.”

The winner of the National Photographic Portrait Prize will be announced on 30 July, but Ms Phoenix said the thought of winning hadn’t really entered her mind.

“I don’t tend to think about that, I’m just so happy to be selected as a finalist. I’ve had a few moments with other people who ask, what if you win? I haven’t really thought about it but it would change my photography and it would change me as a photographer significantly.

“To be included in that list and to have your work on exhibition in the National Portrait Gallery, it’s a life goal, whether you win or not you’re already winning just by being selected.”

Ms Phoenix shared that after sharing the good news in her circles, she promptly received five new job requests for portraits.

And while she can’t yet share the specific portraits that had been selected, both of her

Remembering the Prince

By Taylah Eastwell As the world unites in mourning over the passing of Prince Philip, Yarra Ranges residents have shared their memories of the Duke and his visits to their leafy pocket of the world.

When the Queen announced the Duke of Edinburgh had “passed away peacefully” at Windsor Castle on Friday 9 April, residents were quick to flick back through their memory boxes, some posting photos to social media of interactions with the Prince during his many visits to Australia.

Upper Ferntree Gully’s Renee Radisich recalls Prince Philip as a down to earth man, having been chosen as one of five Monbulk Primary School students to ask him a question during a World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) event at Melbourne Zoo in 1990.

“He was the international president of the WWF and they were launching some new campaign. Our music teacher, Pamela Miskin (late) was an environmentalist and raised a lot of money through our school so we got invited to go to the zoo for the launch,” she said.

“I was one of about 30 kids from Monbulk Primary School that got to go and one of five or so that got to ask him a question,” Ms Radisich said.

Ms Radisich, who was 11 at the time, said she asked the Prince “what he does in his role as international president of the WWF?” “I don’t remember there being any pompous circumstances about him. There was no bowing or curtseying, he seemed pretty down to earth,” she said.

The Warburton Motel also took to Facebook to share the fond memory of a Warburton woman who encountered the royal couple as a child.

The now elderly woman lived in the homestead as a child. Opposite the hospital entrance, on the fenceline of the homestead (now the motel) was the last spot the postman would stop. As a result, there was a whole row of letterboxes all lined up out the front, where residents would come down off the mountain to collect their mail.

While Prince Philip and the Queen exited the hospital driveway, kids from the homestead were all hanging over the fence to try and get a glimpse of the royals.

As the car left the driveway, the Queen ushered her driver to stop and wound down her window. Both she and Prince Philip were curious to know why there were so many letterboxes but only one house. The kids explained how it worked and, happy with the response,

the royals said their farewells and went on their way.

“It’s odd to think that a 99-year-old royal from half way across the world was once hanging out the window of his car at the motel property shooting the breeze with some local kids now in their 70s. Truly a small world. RIP,” read the Warburton Motel post.

Visits to Australia were not uncommon for Prince Philip, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison commending him for his service to the Commonwealth and his ties to our country.

“He presided as patron or president of nearly 50 organisations in Australia. Given his full service, Prince Philip also had a strong connection to the Australian Defence Force,” Mr Morrison said in a statement shortly after Philip’s death was made public.

One particular visit by the Queen and Prince Philip to the Yarra Ranges has become infamous, despite the royals keeping it under wraps for over 50 years.

During their gruelling 1954 Commonwealth Tour, the couple spent the weekend of March 6 to 8 relaxing at O’Shannessy Lodge in Warburton. It was their only free weekend in Victoria during the trip and the only place the royals stayed other than Government House and aboard the Royal Train.

With 27-year-old Elizabeth only recently crowned Queen, the 1954 royal tour was the a huge event for Australia and the royal family . But the loved-up young royals proved they were not immune to a quarrel, with an argument between the pair retold years later in royal writer Robert Hardman’s 2011 novel, ‘Our Queen’. The incident, during which the Queen is alleged to have thrown sports equipment at Philip, has also been recreated in season one of the Netflix drama ‘The Crown’. Allegedly the tiff was caught on camera but the footage later destroyed on request of the royal couple.

Monbulk CFA lowered its flag to half mast on Saturday 10 April in respect of the Prince.

Boost for farmers

Marysville SES were called to assist Ambulance Victoria with a Priority 1 rescue in the Cathedral Range State Park at 1.45pm on Good Friday. A hiker was suffering a serious medical incident on the Razorback track, an extremely challenging section some distance from the road. Two SES and two AV members hiked in, carrying gear through several challenging rock scrambles to reach the patient around an hour later. Immediate medical treatment was provided, and coordinates were provided to the incoming helicopter. With a specialist paramedic winched down to the scene, our crews then worked to move the patient to an area where he could be winched to the helicopter and transported directly to hospital for urgent care.

By Jed Lanyon Some 200 Pacific Island workers have taken to Victorian farms to increase seasonal workforce, including to Yarra Valley orchards during apple picking season.

Minister for Agriculture Mary-Anne Thomas met with workers at Launching Place’s Vernview Orchards as they started their first day on the job on Tuesday 6 April.

The workers were among the first of 1500 to fly in from Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Samoa last month as part of the restart of the seasonal worker program.

“We have an agreement in place with the Tasmanian Government for up to 1500 workers to arrive and support the big Victorian harvest,” Ms Thomas said.

“What the pandemic has exposed is that the horticultural industry is over reliant on overseas workers, that’s why the Victorian Government has taken a multi-pronged approach to support our horticultural industry and our growers across the state.

“In any given year the majority of workers come under the backpacker scheme, now backpackers are not coming back anytime soon so it’s important that we all work together to find other ways to get labour to our farms.”

Vernview owner Sue Finger said she is currently employing 15 seasonal workers from Vanuatu, nine who had been in Australia since March last year and six who arrived on Good Friday.

“It was getting pretty desperate. Coming up to Easter all of our team were working particularly long hours,” she said. “We were working weekends and nine and a half hour days just to get on top of it ... With the guys here now we hope to be on top of things by the end of this week or early next week.”

It was the first day in the orchards for Apia Samuel, a Vanuatuan man from the island of Malekula. He said he came here to help support his family back home.

Brick incident

Orchardist Sue Finger, Apia Samuel, Kaltac Takaua and Mary-Anne Thomas MP. “It’s a privilege to come here to support my family,” Apia said. “I think i’m feeling good when I’m doing this job, out in the sun doing my work with my fellow friends.”

For Kaltac Takaua, a father of four from Pele island, he is yet to meet his daughter Daisy who was born while he was isolated in hotel quarantine in Tasmania.

“When I was in my first night in quarantine, that is when my wife went into labour,” he said. “For me, I’ve never been in quarantine.

It’s kind of like living in a prison cell.”

Despite the quarantine, he said it was worth it to make the journey after Covid-19 severely hampered Vanuatu’s tourism and economy.

Ms Finger said Vernview had potentially one of the biggest apple crops this year across Australia and that the orchard would usually plan 12 months in advance for workforce requirements.

“We’ve got quite a few Australian workers on the farm who are our permanent workforce

but during harvest season we rely on the seasonal worker program and have for the last eight years.

“We were lucky, we’ve got the guys coming in off the first plane load but for other farmers around Victoria and around Australia it is a particularly stressful time.”

Eildon MP Cindy McLeish said it was too little, too late for the “handful“ of workers provided to support Victorian farmers.

“Failure to provide seasonal workers during peak harvesting time was a huge missed opportunity by the State Labor Government,“ she said. “A lack of workers left too many farmers forced to plough this season’s hard work into the ground or leave fruit to rot on the trees.“ While apple season is in full swing during the peak periods of March, April and May, Yarra Valley’s berry farmers weren’t as lucky as Visit Yarra Valley notes the end of summer coinciding with the season’s end for some fruit favourites such as blueberries, strawberries and cherries.

Police are appealing for information for an incident where a brick was thrown at a moving vehicle along Hull Road, Mooroolbark on 2 April about 10pm. Two males approximately aged between 15-17 were observed behind a tree. As they passed, a brick was seen to be thrown at the vehicle. Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or similar incidents in the area, has CCTV or dashcam footage is asked to Call Lilydale on 9739 2300.

Warby evasion A 23 year old P plate driver from Warburton East was detected travelling 80km/h in a 60km/h zone along Warburton Highway on Friday 9 April. When police turned around to intercept the car, the driver decided to try and evade police. The vehicle was found a short time later on the Warburton Trail after crashing through a wooden bollard. The male driver was found hiding in bushes nearby and when undergoing a breath test, recorded a reading of 0.116. He will lose his license for 11 months and will have a future date with a Magistrate.

Drug driving An 18 year old P plate driver was fund driving an unregistered vehicle along the Melba Highway on 9 April and registered a positive result for illicit drugs. He will receive a six months loss of license and a $826 fine for driving an unregistered motor vehicle.

Defect notice On Friday 9 April police detected a vehicle travelling 84km/h in a 60km/h zone in Woori Yallock along the Warburton Highway. Police issued a $330 fine and upon further inspection, the driver was issued a defect notice for the vehicle’s ground clearance.

Fast food dream complex coming soon

By Mikayla Van Loon Fast food enthusiasts rejoice, plans for a McDonald’s, Taco Bell and KFC are in the works for Chirnside Park.

A vacant block of land on Maroondah Highway, located between Fletcher Road and East Ridge Drive near Dan Murphy’s, has had a development application submitted to Yarra Ranges Council on 14 January.

The proposed plan will see ten retail shops, three convenience restaurants, five shops and a food and drink premise built in this prime location.

Yarra Ranges Council has confirmed it received a planning application for the 266268 Maroondah Highway location and Director of Planning, Design and Development Kath McClusky said the council is currently working with the applicant.

“[We] expect the application will be out on advertising in coming months,” Ms McClusky said.

“We encourage community members interested in this application to read the plans and make a submission on our ePlanning website.”

The property in question had previously been acquired and owned by German company Kaufland until they withdrew from Australia and sold all sites under its ownership.

Troon Group now own the three hectare property and have proposed to use a total of 11,607 square metres of land for the retail and food complex.

In draft documents, Troon Group have listed a number of suitable tenants for the spaces available including large format clothing or homewares, cafes, casual dining,

gyms or fresh food produce stores.

The complex is meant to attract the 34,000 vehicles that pass the vacant site each day, particularly with the addition of American food chain Taco Bell.

This would be Taco Bell’s fifth food outlet in Melbourne and the first for the outer eastern suburbs.

Taco Bell initially opened its first store in Brisbane in 2017 and has now expanded throughout Australia.

Developers and planners expect the build to cost $15 million and could see 160 jobs created throughout the build and an extra 278 once the complex is operating.

Due to the estimated cost of the development, Ms McClusky said the application will be heard at a public council meeting later this year.

A welcome Easter boost

By Jed Lanyon It was like the good old pre-pandemic days in the Yarra Valley over the Easter long weekend as tourists flocked to local townships to enjoy the Valley’s offerings and some fantastic weather.

Healesville business owners were happy to see large numbers of people roll into town again and expressed an optimistic outlook for the year ahead.

Natures Cakes co-owner Darren Scott said the weekend trade was ‘phenomenal’ and labelled the Easter weekend as one of the most important holidays for local businesses. He explained a range of factors led to a big result for local businesses.

“Because Easter was early, the weather was warm and it also coincided with the market on Sunday ... Trade was enormous.

“People were very very appreciative of the place being open and being able to get out and about... Everybody just wanted to have a good time. Yes there were waits on food and waits for coffee and things like that, but I think people were just happy to be out of home and thankful that places were open.

“We’ve been really really busy since restrictions came off in November. December and January were phenomenal. Our feeling is, it’s not going to be a busy couple of months, it’s going to be a busy year ... We feel really positive about the town and the year.”

Beechworth Bakery manager Kylie Bray echoed a similar sentiment and described the weekend trade to be in-line with “2019 customer numbers”.

“I’m thinking it’s the start of more things to come leading into winter. Snow season always brings more people through the town as well. We’re fairly confident we’re on the upward trend and not the downward spiral, so that’s a good feeling.”

Grand Hotel owner Lisa-McKay Campbell said the restaurant was “crazy busy” on Saturday and Easter Sunday.

“We’ve got bands playing back on Friday and Saturday nights and it’s always busy. I suspect the year ahead should hopefully be a good one,“ she said.

“It looks promising, as long as we don’t go back into any lockdowns again, we should be right.“

Redwoods closed again because of overcrowding

By Jed Lanyon Warburton’s ever-popular Redwood Forest was once again forced closed with Parks Victoria turning away visitors on the Easter long weekend due to concerns of overcrowding.

Parks Victoria district manager, Victoria Purdue confirmed the Redwood Forests were shut down on Saturday and Monday.

“Redwoods Forest in Warburton was closed for short periods over the Easter long weekend on Saturday and Monday,” she said.

“The closures were put in place to manage extremely high visitor numbers that were contributing to safety concerns along Warburton Highway.”

“The closures were put in place in partnership with Victoria Police and Yarra Ranges Council.”

Overcrowding issues have been a recurring sign for residents as tourists flocked to see Warburton’s Redwoods when Covid-19 restrictions eased in June last year. Severe overcrowding forced Parks Victoria and Victoria Police to act in closing the park for several months with the park finally reopening in mid-December.

Videos circulated online of cars lining both sides of Cement Creek and Woods Point roads at the entrance of the forest after the 200 or so parking spaces were filled.

The park was closed in the interest of public safety during the pandemic.

At the time, Yarra Ranges councillor Jim Child described some of the behaviour in the forests as ‘disgusting’, while some locals took to social media angered by visitors who had left litter scattered in the area

and in some cases toilet paper and faeces as there are no amenities in the area.

This time around, Visit Yarra Valley took the opportunity to post to social media highlighting nearby local toilets as part of their ‘Redwood Forest Poo Trail’.

“The word is that some visitors think it’s ok to go #2’s in our beautiful Redwood Forest and it’s 100 per cent not ok. Kind of like 1 ply toilet paper,” the social media post reads.

“So, it gives us great pleasure to introduce our new top trail, the Redwood Forest Poo Trail. It outlines all the appropriate places (the public toilets) to do your #2’s before heading out to the majestic Redwoods.

There’s quite a variety.”

Since the initial closures, the State Government has announced a $2.3 million investment to upgrade the visitor facilities at the Redwoods, according to Parks Victoria.

The upgrade includes additional car parking and visitor amenities such as picnic grounds and barbecues. The upgrades are scheduled for completion by the end of 2022.

Exhibition a creative nest

By Jed Lanyon A new art exhibition titled ‘Fledglings: Nature and Nests’ has arrived at the Warburton Waterwheel Gallery for April.

The exhibition was created by two local artists George Grace and Zora Verona and showcases the beauty of natural fibres. Zora’s collection of ephemeral sculptures honours the art and architecture of birds nests, while George’s series of black and white photos are a response to a natural world that offers much inspiration.

Together, Zora’s nests and George’s photography are a celebration of flora, fauna, found objects and place.

In the late 1800s nest collecting reached a fever pitch. It was officially outlawed in most countries, to protect nests, eggs and, most importantly, the birds themselves from being driven to extinction.

Zora’s works are in response to that desire to possess and collect objects of natural beauty. As an ode to the birds, and the humans too who wish to collect without guilt, Zora’s series of handmade nests are recreations for all to own and enjoy.

“We wanted to recreate these beautiful artistic works that people could possess and own,” Zora said. “We wanted it to be ephemeral to celebrate the beauty and decay at the same time. When you’re tired of it, you can just pop it in the compost.”

Zora said she drew inspiration from a study which found birds using snakeskin to build their nests to ward off potential predators.

“We’ve told quite a few stories of the birds and their nests. One of the nests uses snakeskin and upon doing our research, when a bird uses snakeskin, they don’t use it for fashion but to fend off their foes.”

The exhibition aims to be informative as each nest sculpture is accompanied by a blurb giving insight into birdlife and nesting.

An excerpt from the Succulent Snake work reads: “Amazingly, studies conducted by a University in Arkansas demonstrated that when bird nests were woven with snake skin, or even the opening to the nesting cavity was adorned with snake skin, this methodology was 100 per cent effective in warding off wayward predators in search of tasty eggs. Nesting boxes with no snake skin however, succumbed to raids 20 per cent of the time.

“In crafting my nest, I hope you find it to be a delightful blend of all three; fashion, folly and it may even ward off your foe.”

Originally Fledglings was scheduled for later in the year, until a cancellation at the venue led to Zora bringing the exhibition forward.

George explained how the news put him under the pump to bring the works together.

“I was pushed out of the nest! There was no soaring from the beginning, I was pushed and I plummeted,” he joked.

George said he’s looking forward to seeing friends and family at the exhibition and explained what he hopes the public will take away from Fledglings.

“Anything that echoes the beauty that’s around us and reminds us how important it is to offer protection, I think that’s a good thing.”

Fledglings will be exhibiting from 7-27 April at the Warburton Waterwheel Gallery. *In honour of his parents, George and Grace, John Christie creates and exhibits under the name George Grace, while Lori Kravos has chosen to create and exhibit under the name Zora Verona, in honour of her two grandmothers, Zora and Verona.

Centre in the lead up to Christmas. Many locals far and wide were able to keep up their Christmas tradition in getting a family photo with ‘The Real Santa’ who they had grown to love.

The unlikely tandem tallied upwards of $30,000 from their family Christmas photos and then selected four charities to each receive

$8400 to help make the lives of children better.

The four recipients of the funds included: Backpacks 4 Vic Kids, A Better Life For Foster Kids, HeartKids and Chum Creek’s Good Life Farm. The organisations shared how the funds had already been put to good use.

Backpacks 4 Vic Kids CEO and founder Sally Beard told Star Mail the donation came as a “delightful surprise”.

“We’re very, very grateful on behalf of the children, whose lives that it will impact,” she said. “We have absolutely put that money to good use.”

Ms Beard shared that the $8400 donation from Branded is aiding 112 children in need with care packs filled with toiletries, spare changes of clothes, a toy and more.

A worthy brand

while Ty Sheridan and Lily-Rose Depp play the beleaguered voices of reason. Voyagers has an enthralling escalation, as paranoia, ego and poor judgement cause the crew to splinter and clash, and the plot builds to an exquisitely stressful climax.

Voyagers feels like a less explicit cousin of Claire Denis’ 2018 film High Life, which also features unstable crew in a spaceship environment where emotion and sexuality are strictly regulated.

Voyagers is a subtle, extremely suspenseful sci-fi drama, and is playing in most Victorian cinemas.

New Lilydale vax centre A community vaccination centre is set to be established in Lilydale as part of an expansion to Victorian coronavirus vaccination hubs.

The Lilydale centre is just one of five new community centres which will be placed in a targeted area for those most vulnerable to coronavirus.

The State government has recognised that those who require the vaccine in phase 1a and 1b may not be able to travel long distances to receive their injection.

“Our targeted approach will mean we’re reaching even more of the cohorts and communities we need to,” Health Minister Martin Foley said.

Mobile vaccination vans and pop-up locations will also be available as part of this expansion to help reach those communities.

Both Mr Foley and Acting Premier James Merlino said they were pleased with the rollout of the Covid-19 vaccination program in Victoria.

“Victoria’s vaccine rollout is time, on target and on track to deliver 300,000 total doses by the middle of May,” Mr Merlino said.

Jiminy Cricket the Plumed Whistling Duck.

Jiminy Cricket the duck loves jazz Healesville Sanctuary’s keepers have discovered one of its resident ducks loves listening to music. Jiminy Cricket is a Plumed Whistling Duck named after her species’ distinctive whistling call. She was born in Healesville Sanctuary’s wetlands, but had to be taken into the care of keepers at a few days old.

“Right after she was born, some of the other ducks were bullying her,” explained sanctuary platypus keeper Jess Thomas.

“The keepers rescued her and brought her to me, because I was already looking after two orphaned wild Wood ducks.”

Dr Thomas often finds the ducks in the water with the platypus. Jiminy has a special bond with female platypus Bimini.

Jiminy also loves to relax by spending time listening to music with Dr Thomas.

“She likes all kinds of music, from instrumental to rock. I’ll just sit down and play music on my phone and she’ll come right over to sit next to me and listen,” said Dr Thomas.

Jiminy is full of surprises. At two years old, she has recently reached maturity, so keepers took a feather to run a genetic test and discovered that she is in fact female.

“I did think Jiminy was a boy when we first got her, because boy and girl Plumed Whistling ducks look very similar,” said Dr Thomas.

“Knowing now that she is female does explain some of her behaviours, because girl ducks are often quite dominant. Jiminy is very strong-willed. She always gets to the food first and is quite monopolising of our one boy duck.”

All of Good Friday night a number of stalwarts gathered around the fire pit in front of All Saints Church on the highway in Yarra Junction for various lengths of time from 6pm until 6am to reflect and give thanks.

Apart from Graeme Dawson, the author of the Mail’s Focal Point column, who led it, a few stalwarts stayed for up to 7 to 8 hours.

A number had come in response to the invitation issued in Mr Dawon’s Focal Point Easter article.

“The idea was to take time and say thank you, for the sacrifial death of Jesus on the cross, that allowed us to be free from sin, and to be thankful for his promise of life with him in the place He has prepared in Eternity,” Mr Dawson explained.

“Thanks to all who supported me on the night - especially Rod who came for an hour at 5am and helped pack up at 6am”.

Your school holiday plans are sorted thanks to a new community space in Healesville.

Over the past year, many community groups across the Yarra Ranges have had to cancel their usual programs and activities to keep everyone healthy and safe - with arts, craft, music and drama events on hold or held virtually until recently.

This year, Council is working to provide local arts and community groups with free open-air gathering spaces where creative activities can resume in a Covid-safe way.

The Healesville Community Space is a temporary open-air space for community members to sit with food and coffee, and an area where free community events will be held.

For over two decades, the Sancta Sophia Meditation Community in Warburton stood as a retreat for people all across the country and the world who needed to reconnect with themselves and their faith.

But after all those years, Sancta Sophia has closed and the property, known as Karith, which was owned by the Carmelites, has been sold.

But instead of dwelling on the closure, Dominican Sister Kathleen Murphy, founder and coordinator, reflects on how lucky she was to be a part of the community and Sancta Sophia’s history.

Sister Kathleen came to Melbourne from Sydney in 1980 to continue her studies in theology.

It was then that she met Father Ken Petersen, a Carmelite priest, in Warburton and under his guidance ran the first meditation retreat at Karith.

Returning the following year to run a similar retreat, it then wouldn’t be for another 13 years that Sister Kathleen would return to the community at Karith.

Sister Kathleen had always felt the need to bring people together by embracing differences.

“It was when I was studying theology that I became very aware that we in fact have to embrace opposites in our lives, all opposites to really come to integration,” she said.

In 1992 she received a six month sabbatical, of which she spent three months living in a Christian ashram in the lower reaches of the Himalayas in India.

“Well before that I was wanting a place, I felt a call to be in a place, a contemplative, which is a reflective place instead of teaching because I’ve been a teacher, principal, all of that and it was all so busy out there and I just felt the need to go and be in a place of quiet,” Sister Kathleen said.

Sister Kathleen’s passion for meditation practices and the important role it played in Catholic faith only grew from her time in India.

She said the Catholic faith has always included meditation in its religious expression but only in a reflective sense, unlike the Eastern way of conducting meditation.

On her return she was drawn to the idea of being a minister in a place of retreat and sought the help of Father Ken, who was also interested in yoga throughout his life.

The house at Karith became a place of comfort and retreat for many people. 233769 “So he was very open to [the idea] and also he was very aware of the teachings of Vatican II that said we should be involved in the truth that’s present in all religions, so he was very passionate about that and I was very passionate about discovering the other part of my soul,” Sister Kathleen said.

They sought to secure a property and in 1995 they began the process of setting up Sancta Sophia in Port Melbourne.

When a number of circumstances meant the Port Melbourne property was unavailable, they were lucky enough to be offered Karith and so in 1996 Sancta Sophia was born.

Sister Kathleen and Father Ken decided on the name Sancta Sophia for its meaning of holy wisdom.

Sister Kathleen said sancta is latin and sophia is greek.

“It looks towards the bridging of East and West,” she said. “It’s got great significance, the name.”

Karith itself also carried a symbolic meaning as a place of nurturance, which is not only present through the healing practices performed but also the land surrounding the property and the comfort it provided as a safe, calming place.

Father Ken and Sister Kathleen were dedicated to the idea of having an open door always and a shared table for anyone who wanted to join.

“People who came, formed the community with us,” Sister Kathleen said.

In the beginning, Sancta Sophia started with regular meditation days and gradually built a program.

Eventually, they were running reiki and enneagram workshops, as well as yoga nidra.

Sister Kathleen said she felt her collaboration with Father Ken really appealed to people.

“We should work as equals in collaboration and that’s what I did with Father Ken and it was fantastic. We used to work seamlessly,” she said.

Slowly people started realising Sancta Sophia was there.

“They knew we were there and it gave them a sense of security. Gradually people knew we were there and we were open and they might not have come and done retreats but gradually they kind of came in,” Sister Kathleen said.

“I think we could have been regarded with a bit of suspicion in the beginning.”

Over the 25 years, Sancta Sophia aimed to seek peace through meditation and interreligious dialogue, something Sister Kathleen said isn’t a common practice in many churches and religious communities - to open up to other faiths and share common ground.

Sister Kathleen said throughout her time at Sancta Sophia, she saw a range of different people come through the door but in particular those aged in their thirties, forties and fifties.

She said a lot of people had been alienated from the church, had given up on religion or were atheists and although they never intended on healing or changing people, that happened naturally.

“It’s all to do with love because we discovered the greatest wisdom is love. All we’re called on is to love people, not to really change them,” Sister Kathleen said.

Sadly in March last year, Father Ken had a fall and broke his hip. After that he never recovered and his health slowly declined.

Father Ken died on 13 June 2020.

For Sister Kathleen, she didn’t see how she could continue working at Sancta Sophia without Father Ken and made the difficult decision to close the meditation retreat.

“I couldn’t have had anyone else I could have worked with like that. And people said we worked seamlessly, we just flowed and it’s hard to find that,” she said.

“Also I felt I had to honour Father Ken. It was time to move on.”

Sister Kathleen hopes the spirit of Sancta Sophia will live on and continue into the future.

“Even the community now, officially it’s closed, physically it’s closed but it’s still going really.”

“So it’s just up to the people who have experienced it, to live it.”

Now that Karith has been sold, Sister Kathleen has moved to Camberwell and doesn’t have plans for the future - she will just let her faith guide her as she carries out the practices of Sancta Sophia in her own life.

“I’m not sitting down wallowing about it, it’s just something I had to do, I had to move on,” she said.

“I’m so grateful for what I have had. That I’ve been able to work with such a good person and I was able to live [at Karith].”

Stories from a war zone Fifty years after they served Australia in the Vietnam War, sixteen local veterans of that conflict who live in the Yarra Valley sat down with the Mt Evelyn RSL’s historian, Anthony McAleer OAM, and revealed, some for the first time, their wartime experiences.

The information gathered together has now formed a unique book entitled ‘Yarra Valley Vietnam Veterans’, published by the Mt

Evelyn RSL sub-branch.

Their stories tell of our nation’s involvement in Vietnam and spans the period 1964 to 1972. Those interviewed served with the Royal Australian Navy, with the Regular Army, with the CMF and as National Servicemen.

Their backgrounds varied as much as their experiences ‘in country’ during that time.

It is a story of sacrifice and endurance,

bravery and loss, good times and bad times.

It reveals the environment they were forced to exist in and the role they played, from the mundane to the terrifying.

Surviving all of this they then returned home to a nation where many people ignored or even condemned them.

For most, those decades after the war were an ongoing battle to deal with the physical

and mental scars.

If ever you wanted to know what Australians had to go through in the Vietnam War, these men will tell you.

River camping concern Many locals are still concerned about the decision to permit camping on licensed river frontages.

Around 10,000 farming families who hold water frontage licences were not consulted by the State Government prior to the legislative change. Up to 17,000 kilometers of mostly unfenced crown land water frontages will be opened to campers on 1 September.

This exposes farmer’s livestock, nearby family homes, and the environment to potential damage caused by campers. It also changes the dynamics of recreational activity along the river including fishing. For years fishermen have been able to access river frontages undisturbed, enjoy the tranquillity and have commonly befriended landowners.

The State Government has now sought public feedback on the proposed land regulations which support the legislation, via the

Engage Victoria website. Many people have an opinion and I encourage them to submit their feedback before the closure date of 19 April 2021, to ensure their concerns are heard.

Some of the drafted regulations raise more questions than they answer, including the decision to allow campers to set up 100 metres away from a family home for 28 days. This poses a huge array of concerns for family’s and individual’s privacy and children’s safety.

There are also issues of increased threats to biosecurity, interference with livestock and possible water pollution with human waste.

The drafted regulations state campers must keep 20 metres from waterways, bury their faeces 50 metres away and avoid using detergents. Without somebody monitoring or enforcing these regulations these changes can be

detrimental to the environment, livestock and farmers livelihoods.

While there are penalties drafted for campers breaching regulations, there is no outline of what steps landowners can take to mitigate the immediate risks when a breach occurs. Potential breaches include camp fires being left unattended or unextinguished, firearms being discharged illegally, rubbish left behind, and the illegal cutting down of trees for firewood.

I would like to see clarity as to what immediate support will be provided to landholders by authorities to combat breaches.

It is important for people to have their say about the proposed regulations so the State Government can take feedback on board and reassess loopholes identified in the drafted regulations.

And I must complement Council on the popup entertainment space between the back of the Memo and the library in Healesville. It is clever use of a very convenient area. I have been told that it is probably only temporary depending on how much use the people put it to.

I love it for a concert, a circus act or even a speakers corner. If the community embraces this facility we will be able to keep it as a very valuable gathering space.

The area treated annually for regeneration following timber harvesting operations is about 1,500 hectares each year’.

LETTERS Tree fell shame The site I refer to is next to Aldi supermarket, near Church and Main streets.

Many [including myself] were hoping that the beautiful trees facing Main Street, would shield our view of the monstrosities planned to be built there. But no, instead the trees have all been cut down.

Whilst there may have been one or two smaller trees needing to be removed because of rotting, most of the trees particularly the large oak, were perfectly healthy. There was no good reason for their removal. Instead now as locals, we have to prepare to be exposed daily to apartment buildings that are not in any way in keeping with Healesville, as an area nor a town.

Traffic suggestions In view of the huge increase in traffic through Warburton over the weekends, I have three suggestions.

1. Stop cyclists using the road between Millgrove and Warburton, but put up very clear large signs that the bike track is sealed on that section.

2. Another large clear sign indicating that motorists parking on the edges of the road past the caravan park, can drive about 500 m towards East Warburton to turn around safely.

The road traffic people, during the busiest times, are not around the corners to see how many illegal turns are being performed.

Nobody wants to see a bad accident, which could easily occur if drivers continue to do illegal turns.

Disgraceful state I am a rate payer and resident of Healesville.

I was absolutely disgusted on Saturday 3 April whilst I was in town and had to use the public conveniences.

The photo tells the rest of the story. This is totally unacceptable, for a tourist town, especially over a long weekend, for people to see and witness the disgraceful state of the toilets in our beautiful town.

I reported this to the 1300 number on the Saturday. Then this morning I escalated the phone call to the after hours emergency number.

I am writing to, basically, shame the Council for their lack of interest and care for hygiene and safety.

In response to Nic Fox, vice-president Warburton Environment’s letter on 23 March, in particular point 4 where she states “as we experience heavy smoke in the valley, please be aware that a minimum 64% of the burning DELWP execute on behalf of Vic Forests in the name of ’community safety’ are post logging burns spewing out industrial pollution. These burns are ignited with a napalm like substance called Flash 21 released from helicopters“.

Quite a fear mongering dramatic point. As per usual yet another untrue claim made by an environmental group to suit their political agenda!

Please read below a response from DELWP when I emailed them asking what was the total per centage of post logging coupe burns. Nic’s letter couldn’t be further from the truth. ’With reference to your query re statistics of DELWP Planned burning program: Year to date,1 July 2020 to 31 March 2021, FFMVic have conducted 275 planned burns, treating an area of 54,000 hectares. During this time, 26 burns have been regeneration burns, following VicForests timber harvesting, covering 400 hectares.

In terms of number of burns 26/275 = 9.5% so far have been regeneration burns.

In terms of area treated (hectares) 400/54000 = 0.75% so far have been regeneration burns

I wish to clarify a statistic I quoted a couple of weeks ago re postlogging/ regeneration burns.

The data I used was from the article, Taylor C., & Lindenmayer, D. (2018, May 17) - ‘Logging burns conceal industrial pollution in the name of community safety’, The Conversation. (https://theconversation.com/logging-burnsconceal-industrial-pollution-in-the-name-ofcommunity-safety-96712).

A very interesting article stated in the autumn of 2018, “77 of the 119 burns either lit or planned to be lit across the Central Highlands of Victoria and surrounding areas were on logging coupes”, that is 64% of the burns lit.

This does not equate to the total area burnt and is restricted to the Central Highlands only, which of course is relevant to our communities.

This article clearly points out that not all burns are equal - ‘Clearfell logging burns consume much larger volumes of vegetation biomass in the form of tree heads, branches, bark and downed understorey vegetation.

According to a report completed for the National Carbon Accounting System, clearfell logging burns consume, on average, 130 t/ha of slash in mixed-species forest and 140 t/ha of slash in Mountain Ash forests. This means that, while clearfell logging burns cover much less ground than fuel reduction burns, they burn far more biomass per hectare – generating far more smoke,’ in the form of industrial pollution.

Twilight champion

By Ron Hottes In this modern world, many golf clubs run mixed competitions, where men and women play for the same prize. And, so it is at Warburton. This week, one of our most popular ladies won the right to qualify for the Bag-day playoff in November. Trish Eldridge had her best round for this year with a very solid Nett 69 to take home the chocolates. Mario De Vincentis had his best round for a while to grab the runner-up prize. Mario scored a Nett 72. Balls on the day went down to Nett 74. NTP winners were spread out, too. Ms Nursey, Bagel (3rd), Flynn Cousens, (9th), Mr. Hendy (12th), Alan Lowe (15th) and Garside Junior (superb 2nd shot on the 10th) shared the spoils.

David Lever, with a sensational Nett 65, won both the medal and the A-Grade voucher for his fine effort on Saturday 10 April. The BGrade voucher went to Tim-Jones, with a fine Nett 69. Sam Dennis scored a great Nett 67, but that was only good enough to take the runnerup prize as he is in A-Grade and a 65 trumps a 67 every time. The ball rundown extended to Nett 74. NTP’s were won by Neil Leckenby (3rd), Stuart Patrick (5th), Steve Wyatt (9th), Snorks Long (12th) and Ken Barratt (15th).

It’s all over for another Twilight season.

On Thursday 1 April, 10 consistent, but nervous golfers hit off around 4pm to contest this unique event. Other than bragging rights as the Shootout Champion for 2020-21, there were some impressive Titliest prizes to vie for.

As one finalist after another was eliminated from the event, things became really interesting as the three survivors stood on the 8th tee hoping to make the historic 9th tee shoot-off.

And so onto the 9th where the only two left on the tee were the experienced Peter Fox and the young tyro, Flynn Cousens. As it transpired, Flynn made par, and Peter bogied, giving the young champion the title at just 19 years old.

Great effort by Fox, who showed exemplary good manners as a gracious runner-up.

But, young Flynn has been taking all before him lately, and this was another important achievement in his fast-developing career. A sincere thankyou to those who helped out, and the very healthy crowd that followed the players creating a real tournament atmosphere.

Special mention to manager Kevin, who put it all together.

We now wait six months for another Twilight season to begin and we can’t wait.

The weekend started extremely well for the Warburton Bowls Club with the Women’s Club Champion, Rayna Zunneberg, winning the Final of the Eastern Ranges Bowls Region (ERBR) Champion of Champions event. Rayna led for most of the match at Heathmont B.C. on Friday night before defeating Patty Whorlow from Blackburn B.C. 25/19.

Rayna will now represent the Burras and the ERBR in the State Championships in Bendigo.

The Weekend Warburton 2 side started the Divisional Semi Final full of confidence against Bacchus Marsh 2 at Cheltenham B.C. and gained an early lead in the windy conditions.

However, Bacchus Marsh fought back well as they handled the challenging conditions a lot better in the second half to win comfortably 92 shots to 73 to progress to the Final against Clayton 4 the next day.

Rink scores were as follows: P. Summers 15/25; S. Freestone 18/23; T. Heyward 22/23 and G. Wynd 18/21.

The Warburton 2 side can be extremely proud of their vast improvement this season as they are promoted to Division 4 next season. This compliments the consistent form of the Weekend Warburton side (Division 1), Warburton 3 Spring 6-a-side team and the Midweek Warburton 1 side (Division 2) who also reached the finals in their respective sections.

Cross country excitement Junior footy kicks off again

By Jamie Strudley Only a few more sleeps until the start of the 2021 cross country season. Always a fun, inclusive and enjoyable morning of running around some of our local parklands. This year we will have new courses to enjoy at Morrison Reserve, Lillydale Lake and Margaret Lewis Reserve, as well as the much loved Durham Rd course.

The opening round will be at Morrison Reserve, Mt Evelyn with distances including 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 2000m and 3000m. Athletes of all ages and abilities are welcome to compete in any event they are comfortable with, each event will have a “tortoise” and many will have a “hare”. Look for the club banner to find the start/finish area.

On the track Kiara Flavel will compete in the U17 800 and 1500m events. Kiara has been in fantastic form recently and is a very good chance of winning a medal at the championships. Tiara Willis will compete in the U16 90m hurdles and 200m hurdles events. Our only open age athlete, Grace Muller, will compete in the U23 3000m Steeplechase event.

In the field we will be represented by a trio of talented women. Ashleigh Rooke will compete in the U17 Discus, Hayley Wilkins in the U20 Javelin and Sarah Ebbels in the U17 Hammer Throw. All three girls have thrown some big PB’s in recent weeks and will hope to improve on those performances.

After 595 days since the 2019 Grand finals, junior football is finally back. Wintery conditions greeted the start of the junior football on Sunday, with the majority of the Healesville teams playing at Olinda in bitterly cold conditions.

All the U10s were in their first game of competitive football against Upwey. The highlight of the game was the successful banana kick to score the last Healesville goal before play was abandoned due to lightning. The U11 were greeted with patches of snow on the ground at Olinda, they worked hard in the freezing conditions, but Olinda were just too strong and acclimatised to the weather for the Healesville team.

In celebrating 10 years since Healesville first fielded an all-girls football team, the U13 Girls played against a depleted Olinda side and controlled the whole game from start to finish.

Players came off the ground due to hail to then emerge back onto the ground in the sunshine.

True Melbourne weather. The U13 Boys teams played at Olinda and Yarra Glen. The Red team at Olinda worked hard with a lot of the first half the ball going up and back without scoring and managed to pull in front by a goal at three quarter time. Olinda came home with a rush with two goals in the last quarter to take the game.

The U13 White team took on Yarra Glen, it was a tight fought game until three quarter time with Yarra Glen in front by 2 points. The final quarter saw Yarra Glen pull away with two goal to secure the win. The U15 Girls in a tight game until half time took on Olinda in the cold conditions, Olinda took control of the game in third quarter and try as they might the Healesville couldn’t pegged back the lead in the final quarter.

The U15 Boys teams played at Olinda and Yarra Glen. The Red team took on one of the U15 teams expected to be a powerhouse during the season in their first game, and Olinda showed why they are expected to do well this season. The Healesville team worked hard in the cold and wet conditions, which suited Olinda tall players, couldn’t get the score on the board.

U15 White played Yarra Glen in a nail-biting contest, scores were even at three quarter time, Healesville team managed to hold the Yarra Glen team goalless in the last quarter and score one themselves to take away a 4 point win.
