THE LOWDOWN
MORE DISTURBING THAN FICTION BY MARGARET MACCOLL For 40 years Peregian Beach forensic psychologist Donald Grant has delved into the minds of murderers. In his book, Killer Instinct, launched last week he discusses 10 real murder case studies. "I don't go to post mortems. I'm not catching the villain or going to crime scenes," he said. "I get involved when someone has already been charged. I go and see them in custody." Dr Grant's role is to determine the state of mind of an accused murderer, their capacity to act with a sound mind and whether they are fit for trial. He may diagnose a mental illness. His decision may direct the accused to a mental health court or the Supreme Court or determine whether the charge should be manslaughter or murder. Dr Grant regularly appears in court during a trial in the mental health court to provide evidence on which he is questioned and has been called before the Supreme Court to be questioned by the defence. "I've seen hundreds of murderers and sexual offenders," he said. But what makes people commit murder? Dr Grant said in some cases people have had a psychotic disorder and not known what they were doing. Sometimes people get pushed over the edge and kill someone. "We've all inherited through evolution
aggressive drives," he said. Dr Grant said this aggressive ability within everyone leads to a fascination with murder. People like talking about murder and hearing about it as long as it stays at arms length. "If you're really involved in murder it's really traumatic and can leave lasting scars. There's a big difference." Dr Grant wrote his book with the aim to get across in everyday language what all the issues are in the complexity of murder. Three of his case studies involve sexually sadistic murderers who abducted their victims, assaulted and murdered them. Dr Grant said these killers, like serial killers, share three similar traits. Most are driven by powerful sexual drives. They gain sexual pleasure through humiliating and killing. They are psychopaths who have no empathy for others and they have endured traumatic early lives. Their personalities are a result of both inherited and nurtured traits. Killer Instinct by Donald Grant is available at Annie's Books at Peregian Beach Village or at mup.com.au, RRP $34.99. â—?
