Hawks knock it on By JARROD POTTER DDCA Turf 1 - Round 8 (day 1) THE gauntlet has finally been thrown to Cranbourne as an unlikely contender stepped up to post the biggest score against the Eagles this season. CRANBOURNE v HALLAM KALORA PARK THE thorn in Cranbourne’s side was the young Hallam Kalora Park (6/266) opening tandem Ben Hilliard (101) and Jagveer Hayer (96), who managed to finally put the Eagles on the back foot this season. The duo had the match by the throat as they bludgeoned 197 for the opening wicket as the openers powered towards their maiden centuries. Once Hayer fell - agonisingly short of his maiden DDCA century the advantage was well and truly with the Hawks and the fun could begin. Once Hilliard reached his century. It’s been quite a while since Hilliard got this close to triple figures, having to trace his history all the way back to under-13s where he was stranded 95 not out against Coomoora. He made sure there would be no missed centuries this week as he smashed through for the ton before finally succumbing. Cranbourne opener Cam Kelly (3/54) started to churn through the Hawks’ order with Steve Spoljaric (1/57) and Te Ahu Davis (1/73) also grinding through the overs. Cory Booth (27) and Amila Perera (16 not out) had free licence to smash the last few runs into the ledger as the overs started ticking down. Hallam Kalora Park called it a day and will send Cranbourne in to chase a whopping 267 runs on Saturday which would be the Hawks’ largest total this season and also become the biggest margin Cranbourne has been set to hunt down. BERWICK v PARKFIELD A ROLLER-COASTER ride at Arch Brown Reserve left Berwick (0/13) with the honours on day one as Parkfield threw it away not once, but thrice. The opening initiative failed spectacularly as the top-order crumbled.

By JARROD POTTER PREMIER CRICKET - Round 13 and 14 (One day and Twenty20)

It was a Goodes day out for Berwick skipper Jarrod Goodes, charging in to claim 4/29 against Parkfield. 133230 Picture: JARROD POTTER Leaving the effort to Nilochana Perera (54) and Travis D’Souza (35), the duo notched 85 together and looked set to turn the tables on the Bears before a pre-tea collapse. Losing four wickets in quick succession - the Perera/D’Souza partnership was broken by a careless “yesno” run-out before Brad Baptist (0), Perera and Matt Aslett (0) succumbed. It left the last battle to be fought by the Parkfield tail as Mike Willmott (31 not out) and captain Shane Bell (25) turned a sub-par tally into something fortified.

Jarrod Goodes (4/29) and Dushan Wickramarathna (2/29) ran through the Lions’ share of the visitor’s order, leaving it up to Adam Watson (6 not out) and Brad James (6 not out) to see off the new ball and get to stumps unscathed at 0/13. Berwick is 0/13 overnight off its 10 overs. COOMOORA v HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS REMAINING in the balance, Coomoora (142) can still escape with its inaugural win of the season as Heinz Southern Districts (5/99)

lurched towards the first-innings victory. Joel Robertson (36) showed the needed grit to push the Kangaroos past 100 and towards something marginally respectable as Heinz tandem Paul Stockdale (4/62) and Michael Davies (3/23) razed any batsman who crossed their path. The Cobra retaliation was comfortable before Adam Semmens (49) and Shehan Bandaranayake (22) fell to Saliya Saman (2/18) and Robertson (2/22), leaving Heinz’s lower order exposed with 43 left to attain next week.

Gibbs’ hat-trick a highlight for Beaconsfield By DAVID NAGEL A RARE hat-trick from Upper Beaconsfield (137) medium-pacer Kyle Gibbs was the highlight of a surprisingly competitive affair between the Maroons and WGCA ladder-leader Cardinia (6/155) at Upper Beaconsfield on Saturday. Gibbs joins Pakenham young-gun Zac Chaplin on the unique honourroll this season after claiming the wickets of Simon Parrott (26), Mark Andolfatto (2) and Brayden Browne (0). “It’s something you dream about as a bowler I suppose but it happened so quickly, I wasn’t even expecting to bowl,” a humble Gibbs said after his achievement. Gibbs’ late flurry, at the end of the 36th and start of the 38th overs, couldn’t stop the Bulls from posting a competitive total with their mercurial skipper Neil Barfuss (78 not out) once again leading the way. Barfuss and Parrott were joined by Daniel Strahan (28) as the three main contributors to the innings, while Gibbs (3/10) and Tommy Tyrrell (2/23) led an under-rated Maroons’ attack. The home-side started well in reply with Robert North (57) and Tyrrell (21) adding a 36-run stand to their

Ups and downs for the Swans

Jarrod Williams was in great touch for Beaconsfield, scoring 48 and then taking 2/17 in the Tigers WGCA Premier Division clash with Picture: ROB CAREW Emerald. 133166 debut century opening partnership against Tooradin last week. North’s wicket was the key one for the Bulls, who looked behind the eight-ball as the home side worked its way to 5/134. But the Maroons’ lower order remains brittle - and it fractured in a big way after North’s dismissal - losing 5/3, including the last four wickets for no runs to throw away a

golden opportunity. Ben Darose (3/13), Barfuss (3/20) and Travis Welsh (2/26) stood firm under fire for the Bulls. Kooweerup’s (5/197) champion opener Chris O’Hara (80 not out) has piloted the Demons to one of the wins of the season in a last-ball thriller against Tooradin (5/196). Needing four runs to win off the

last two balls, O’Hara lofted Ash Adams back over his head for two before top-edging the last ball of the match past wicket-keeper Tom Hussey’s gloves to give his side a memorable victory. Hussey (64) and Cal O’Hare (58 not out) had earlier batted beautifully for the Seagulls while Michael Giles (33) and Matt Bright (32) played key roles in the Demons’ run-chase. Merinda Park (6/156) has killed off the finals hopes of Pakenham (9/151), rolling the Lions in their daynight contest at Toomuc Reserve. Andrew Martin (42), Anthony Craddock (36) and Glen Ward (33) were the mainstays of the Cobras innings before Craig Boswell (2/28) and Dylan Cuthbertson (2/34) produced some magic with the ball to restrict the Lions to a losing score. Pakenham captain Jason Williams (40) nearly got his side across the line. Beaconsfield (8/129) veterans Don Kerslake and Geoff Bliss celebrated their 300th games, but the party was spoiled by Emerald (6/131) at Perc Allison Oval. Nathan Bownds (3/18) was superb for the Bombers early before Mark Alenson (49) steered the visitors to their third win of the season. Jarrod Williams (48 and 2/17) was best for the still winless Tigers.

CASEY-SOUTH MELBOURNE (8/166) was gallant in defeat against Camberwell (7/168), but made amends with a Twenty20 triumph on Sunday. With the top order succumbing simply - falling to 4/12 at one stage - the revival was spurred on by Tasmanian Tigers/Melbourne Stars all-rounder Clive Rose (46). Rose and Shane Maggs (42) pushed the run rate along and kept the Magpies on the back foot. Captain Chris Hall (31) also starred as he guided the tally to 166 by innings’ end. Despite taking wickets in clumps - as Hall (3/19) and Cam Brown (2/22) struck in succession - Camberwell was able to eke out the win via Justin Lampard (65). Twenty20 proved just as lucrative for the Swans on Sunday as Casey-South Melbourne (3/149) held on against Geelong (123). Dan Watson’s power-packed 51 off 39 balls - pushed advantage towards the visitors as Geelong could not run through the order. Lachie Sperling (31 not out) and Clive Rose (29 not out) finished the innings in style to give Casey a chance at an unbeaten weekend. Seeing off the Geelong top-order - taking wickets of Hayden Butterworth (30) and Josh McDonald (30) - Rose (4/12) made his mark on the middle order and spun the Swans towards a comfortable 26run win. Simon Black (3/14) and Watson (2/32) also helped push past Geelong in the sensational triumph.
