Local Sport Batting brilliance By JAMES MCNEIL CRICKET Albury Wodonga veteran Andrew Lade showed his class with an innings-saving knock for St Patrick's in his first game of A Grade for the club. Lade, who crossed from Tallangatta to play at St Patrick's with son Ryan in St Patrick's second grade side, put his new side in a strong position against Albury at Billson Park on Saturday. Having scored 601 runs at an average of 100.2, St Patrick's leadership group would have been very keen to get Lade into their first XI. Lade (95) strode to the crease with St Patrick's at 3/26 thanks to wickets from Dave Tassell and first gamer Liam Hocking. Lade was supported by Luke Restall who contributed 49 runs. On a slow outfield Lade ensured that St Patrick's made a solid total finishing at 9/254. The standout bowler for the day was Dave Tassell who finished with 5/66 off 19 overs. To chase victory, Albury will be looking to Kade Brown and Grant Wells to score heavily. At Kelly Park, Belvoir won the toss and sent Wodonga in to bat. The Eagles didn’t make the most of the conditions and allowed Wodonga to post a competitive total of 330 in what will be a tough chase next weekend. B.J. Garvey compiled 67 at

the top of the order while Robbie Jackson scored 77. Eight of Wodonga’s batsmen scored 20-plus with the Eagles finding it difficult to take wickets in bunches. As usual Ryan McNeil and Zac Simmons bowled the majority of the overs with 42 between them. Simmonds took 3/101 off his 22 and McNeil took 3/78 from his 20. Belvoir will need big scores from Drew Cameron and Nat Sariman next week to chase down that total. At Rowen Park East, Albury won the toss and batted and finished the day all out for 198. The Crows lost early wickets as all of Tallangatta’s bowlers pitched in. Mat Armstrong (2/40) and Clint Reid (2/32) were the pick of the bowlers and the Bushies fielding was excellent as they held on to all chances created. Dylan Weeding played a key role for the crows with 44 not out while 16-year-old Sean McDonald posted a handy 23 as the last wicket partnership reached 55. The Crows will be looking to pace duo Cameron White and Chris Bridle to take early wickets next week to put the Bushies on the back foot. Wodonga Raiders have made a strong start to 2015 at Scots School oval where they dismissed Lavington for 192 in 76.3 overs. Jesse Griffiths was key for the Raiders with 2/41 off 17 including an early breakthrough, while

Brendon Simmons, Caleb Hobbs, Darcy I'Anson. Jonathon Carson also picked up two wickets. Shawn Clark and Patrick Clark both played their first games for Raiders first grade and bowled 34 overs for 48 runs with both taking wickets. A.B. Mackinlay top-scored for the Panthers with 49 while Will Heriot and Michael Galvin put on 31 for the last wicket to claw their way to a respectable total. The Panthers will need early wickets and plenty of tight overs from their spinners to put the raiders on the back foot. North Albury had a great day out at Bunton Park on Saturday where they compiled 6/347 against New City. Ash Borella got the Hoppers off to a solid start with 63 including four sixes. The Hoppers had plenty of starts through the middle order as runs flowed freely, but the best was

from David Farrell who scored 88 not out. For New City Darcy I’Anson was the best with 2/72 from his 23 overs along with a run out. North Albury will be looking for early wickets from Hartnett and Athanitis to play New City out of the game while it will take a team effort of 80 overs for New City to chase this one down. It was great to see cricket back on the border after a few weeks off thanks to Christmas break and a rainy weekend. Most games are set up for a solid week of pressure cricket. In other cricket, the Twenty20 big bash finals are on at Billson Park, Sunday 25 January. Third v fourth will be played in the morning while the final will be played between the Tradelink Hurricanes and Linde Reds starting at 2.30pm.

High state of action By TANIA PHILLIPS NEW South Wales proved dominant in the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup held at Lauren Jackson Stadium, Albury, over the past week. The event, which attracted 64 teams from South Australia, Victoria, NSW, Tasmania and New Zealand, concluded on Saturday after a successful week, according to Bert Bargeus. Bargeus, one of four directors for the week-long event, said this year’s event was very competitive with a number of divisions and games going right down to the wire. NSW proved the state to beat this year taking out three of the six divisions. They proved too tough to beat

in the under-14 girls with the NSW Osprey’s triumphing, under-16 boys was won by the NSW Waratahs while the NSW Kookaburra’s won the under-18 men. The under-14 boys title was taken out by New Zealand, with the under-16 girls title being won by the Victorian Goldminers, and the South Australian Magpies taking the under-18 women’s division. More than 640 competitors, 100 referees, 160 coaches were on the ground for the event which has now been running 29 years. Under-14 and under-16 men’s and women’s teams will be picked from the competitors at the Cup and teams sent to New Zealand at Easter to compete in an event there.
