Collective effort to make a difference WARWICK Collective celebrated its incorporation at The Cherry Tree at its second community meeting. President Elizabeth Ure said the incorporation and not-for-profit status allowed the group to move forward with plans to establish a community space and community garden in Warwick, as well as pursue numerous other projects, funding and opportunities. “The collective is guided by our members, so we wanted to get everyone together straight away to start coming up with some really concrete ideas about how people want to be involved in the community space and garden,” Ms Ure said. Thirty people attended the meeting and in keeping with the vision started from a call for interest on Facebook just a few months ago, everyone was heavily involved in decision-making and input. Several group brainstorming sessions taking place throughout the course of the meeting. “Engagement and inclusion is at the heart of the organisation and it was so great to see so much passion and everyone chipping in to give their feedback and ideas,” Elizabeth said. The high energy brainstorming sessions had participants busily sharing ideas in small groups and reporting to the larger group. Ms Ure said the community space would be an inclusive space open to everyone with member-run workshops on all sorts of art classes,

They will be held in conjunction with gardening classes where people can learn more about droughtresistant gardening, composting, bee-keeping, worm farms, permaculture and healthy eating. One of the main features on the Warwick Collective is the value of
reciprocity and sharing, she said. “Members offer to share their skills and knowledge with others which gives them credits which they in turn can redeem for discounted or free workshops given by other members,” Ms Ure said. “All the classes and workshops will be open to the general public as well, however they instead contribute a small fee.” The next meeting will be at The Cherry Tree Coffee and Dining

again on Wednesday 23 April from 6pm. Ms Ure encouraged everyone who is interested in sharing their skills and learning new ones to attend. “Although we hope to be selfsustaining through a handmade shop and of course the workshops, we are also looking for seed funding to get us off the ground to cover our insurance costs and other start-up costs,” she said. “We are really hoping we can find a local business or two who want to partner with us to help provide this support.” The Warwick Collective’s first event was an energy efficiency workshop yesterday (Wednesday 9 April) at The Cherry Tree. Bridge closed for safety SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council has closed Kadows Road Bridge at Clintonvale due to safety concerns about the old and damaged bridge. Director of Engineering Services Peter See said consultant engineers had advised the council some time ago that the bridge should have a reduced load limit and eventually be replaced however the recent flooding of last week has further damaged the structural integrity of the bridge. “We realise this will be inconvenient for people in the area however the bridge is not safe and not trafficable at all now,” Mr See said. “Council crews have closed the bridge and have created a detour which is signed. “Council will look at constructing a new bridge and will discuss funding options during budget considerations in the coming weeks,” he said. For more information about Kadows Road Bridge, contact the council on 1300 697 372.
Levy exemptions offered SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell says he is pleased the State Government has heard community pleas for changes to the new State Emergency Management Fire and Rescue Levy. Cr Blundell said Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Jack Dempsey advised Parliament in March that community organisations like churches, showgrounds, libraries and community halls will be exempt from this levy introduced on 1 January 2014. “Under this proposal it will be up to community organisations who believe they are eligible to apply directly to councils for an exemption,” he said, The proposal applies on 1 July and any approved community organisation that has already paid the levy is also eligible for a refund. “This needed to happen and I’m delighted,” Cr Blundell said. “I’m not in favour of local governments having to collect this levy however we are bound to do it. “With this change from 1 July at least community groups, who can least afford the levy, will be exempt.”
