Heat kills wildlife By BRIDGET COOK

DISTRESSED, dehydrated and dead wildlife are being found around Casey as they struggle to beat the heat. Doveton resident Krystof Karon contacted the News after he noticed more than 10 dead possums when he was out walking last week, lying lifeless under trees and in parks. “They are simply suffering from heat exhaustion and are un-

able to survive,” he said. “I noticed at least 10 to 12 in my short walk, so I can only imagine how bad the problem is around Casey.” Sharon Williamson from Australian Animal Rescue in Devon Meadows said her organisation has been inundated with calls in recent weeks from people who are finding possums and birds in a bad state. “Possums and other animals are really suffering during this

time,” she said. “Ringtail possums don’t come down from the trees, so they are suffering the most. “The trees are so dry so they are unable to get moisture from them. “Brush tails usually do come down and people are finding them hiding, under cars and other things, looking for some shade or shelter.” Ms Williamson urged people to

leave water out so that animals can access it. “Put out a shallow dish of water and change it regularly on hot days as it heats up so quickly,” she said. “Also, put some in the trees so animals don’t have to come down.” Ms Williamson urged those who find animals in a bad state to call 0430 883 083 so they can be hydrated with the correct fluids.
