Injury-stricken Seagulls show depth IT IS often said that the strength of a champion team lies not in its top players, but in its depth. Playing without two bonafide stars on Saturday, Tooradin showed just how deep its Premier side is with yet another dominating performance - this time over a young Yabbies outfit at Pakenham Upper Rec Reserve. With skipper and dominant all-rounder Aaron Avery, and wicket-keeper batsman Tom Hussey both missing through injury, the Seagulls looked set to be tested away from home. The Yabbies won the toss and elected to bat, but couldn’t get any traction as they lost a steady stream of wickets to start the match.

Only four batsmen reached double figures as the home side was skittled for just 76 in the 34th over. Opener Ben Clough (18) and tailender Tyson Carey (17 not out) bookmarked the innings as the two highest scorers, but Seagulls quick Bodie Brown was absolutely lethal in his nine over spell - finishing with the blistering figures of 5/20 from nine overs. Cal O’Hare, Steve Hamill and Ash Adams also took a wicket apiece. Tooradin’s reply started in convincing fashion with openers Brenton Adams (34) and Sean Wilson (35) combining for a half-century stand. O’Hare and Dylan Sutton also provided 23 run cameos as the Seagulls reached 5/160 at stumps - in prime

position for a run at outright points this week. Elsewhere in Premier, Upper Beaconsfield skipper John Simpson (55 not out) put up a gallant fight once again in the face of a top-class Merinda Park attack as he recorded his fourth innings of 30-plus in his side’s last five matches. Simpson now sits third on the Premier run scoring table with 456 runs at 50.67, but his half-century was the sole shining light of the young Maroons’ innings as they struggled to just 119 in 57 overs in the first innings at Donnelly Reserve on Saturday. Cobras spearhead Jess Mathers was again at his imposing best, ripping through the visitors’ line-up to finish with 5/26. The league’s

leading wicket-taker with 30, Mathers was sensational in tandem with Jarrod Armitage (3/26 from his 16). Illustrating the Maroons’ middle-order struggles, numbers 10 and 11 Will Haines (13) and Jayden Joyce (14) were their side’s second and third-highest run scorers. The Cobras had plenty to prove after a disappointing result against the Seagulls in their blockbuster clash last week, and are sure to come out breathing fire when they resume at 3/73 on day two. Glen Ward (22) and Jess Mathers (25) are the not out batsmen.

overs and were unable to ever fully recover. Spinner Benedek maintained a tight line and length from one end, while Pakenham skipper Dom Paynter and star batsman Chris Smith (both 27) offered the most resistance with the willow for the visitors. Devon Meadows favourite son Mick Floyd starred with the ball, bowling full and straight and snaring the key wickets of Smith, Chaplin and Pearse. Backing up after a tough day in the field on Saturday against Emerald proved that little bit too tough for Pakenham as they finished on 9/120. The shield had returned to Pantherland.

DEVON Meadows won the cricketing battle of Casey versus Cardinia on Sunday to reclaim the Vivian Shield. The action out in the middle of Glover Reserve was just as hot as the scorching weather as the Panthers piled in the runs against their old Lion foes Pakenham to clinch the shield, struck in memory of local cricketing stalwart Steve Vivian by his former clubs. The occasion always puts on a great spectacle and Sunday’s Twenty20 game was no exception. It took the West Gippsland Cricket Association’s centre stage as the only game on the card, with players from rival clubs making the trek down to check out the bighitting action. The home town Panthers got off to a roaring start, sitting on 1/93 at the halfway mark of their innings, despite losing Alex Travaglia (8) early. Luke Sibley (55) and Steve Robinson (52) each scored rapidfire half-centuries, with their 95run stand containing three towering sixes which carried Cross Road and landed in a nearby property. Chris Benedek, who has recently been plying his trade with Casey-South Melbourne in Victorian Premier Cricket, and big Bryce Ingram also chipped in for 16 and 26 respectively as the Panthers reached 5/183 from their 20 overs. The Lions got off to a rocky start in their reply at 2/29 after five
