A HEALESVILLE resident working at the forefront of bushfire management has been awarded the prestigious Australian Fire Service Medal in this year’s Australia Day Honours.

David Nugent had very little time to rest on his Australia Day laurels making an early start to duties as Incident Controller at the Woori Yallock ICC the next morning as fire crews worked on the Powelltown fire.

Mr Nugent works for Parks Victoria and the award recognised his leadership and contribution to improved management of Victorian forest fire-fighting over more

than two decades at a local, national and international level.

He said fire management has been part of his life since studying as a forester.

That has included time on summer fire crews when he was at university to front-line fire-fighting, incident management, including at the State Control Centre, and what he calls his ‘day job’ as acting manager of Parks Victoria Environment and Heritage Division.

His award citation noted his commitment to improving how fire agencies prepare for and manage fires as what sets him apart from other fire management personnel.

“He has worked tirelessly to bring local CFA brigades and

Parks Victoria closer together, forging invaluable relationships and promoting a culture of collaboration,” Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith said.

Mr Nugent said the award was an honour, and humbling in the sense it was recognition of the work he and others do.

“We do this because we think it’s an important thing for both the community and how we manage the bush as well,” he said adding that Australia was recognised world-wide for its fire management.

“We lead the world in how we manage our bushfires and manage fire in our environment,” he said.

Crews keep eye out after fire

By KATH GANNAWAY A FIRE that wiped out a logging coupe and machinery near Powelltown last week had fire crews on site and on stand-by for three days.

The fire started about 6.45pm on Monday 27 January on the Learmonth Creek Road coupe reducing the 29 hectare site to ash and rock and prompting advice messages throughout the week to nearby towns including Brittania Creek, Millgrove, Powelltown, Warburton, Wesburn and Yarra Junction.

Nearly 60 firefighters from Parks Victoria, Melbourne Water, CFA and VicForests, and air support, worked throughout Monday night into a blistering Total Fire Ban day on Tuesday continuing to monitor the site identifying hot spots and strengthening containment lines.

As of yesterday (Monday 3 Feb-

ruary) VicForests staff and contractors and DEPI were continuing to monitor and patrol the site which was offically contained late on Tuesday last week.

VicForests general manager Nathan Trushell said it is a requirement of VicForests contractors to carry fire-fighting equipment during summer and that work-times are restricted based on the Forest Fire Danger Index.

“The timber harvesting crew worked immediately to suppress the fire and, unfortunately, a harvesting machine was burnt during this incident,” Mr Trushell said.

Investigations are continuing into the cause of the fire.

CHILDREN across the Yarra Valley walked through primary school gates for the first time as students last week joining throngs of others as they begin their Prep year.

The Mail received numerous responses to a call-out on Facebook for photos and stories from children’s first day at primary school, including a special family story at Yering Primary School and a bunny among the Preppies at Wesburn.

Brody Adams began his first day at Yering on Thursday 30 January, walking through the gate with his grandfather, Bruce, and his father, Daniel.

Brody’s first day marks three generations of Adams family members attending the school, which even has an oval named after the family.

Daniel said that it was a simple choice to bring Brody to the school because the family lived close and because he himself had great memories of the school from his childhood.

As a new student, Brody will join 17 others at the small school and principal

Deanna Cole said that she was excited to have the third generation of the family at the school.

“I’m pretty excited about it - I think it’s pretty special,” she said.

“The family have been heavily involved with the school over the years - hopefully that will continue.”

Madiba the rabbit filed into class with Wesburn’s 22 new Preps and, according to teacher’s aide Naomi Parsons, was as tired as the other Preppies at the end of a busy first day.

Day one included a tour of the school, a quick sing and dance, a look at the kitchen and dining room, some time in the library, a visit to the principal in her office and meeting their ‘buddies’.

“They were all very excited, so many things to see and do and so many new friends, including Madiba, who was a hit with all the children,” Naomi said.

Madiba, was everybody’s ‘bunny buddy’.

By REBECCA BILLS U3A Yarra Ranges president Geoff Hughes has announced the group was “homeless” after unforeseen circumstances forced the group out of their current bases.

Mr Hughes said after the closure of Swinburne, their base site was then divided between the pavilion at the Uniting Church in Lilydale and the Janet Campbell Centre in Kilsyth.

“Due to circumstances beyond our control, both these sites are no longer available - we are now homeless,” he said.

“We have just been given some breathing space in a disused Maternal Health centre in Kilsyth for 12 months which will allow us to store equipment and records securely.

“But this is temporary, and we need a base which will provide office space, secure storage space and classroom space to allow us our needed flexibility in programming.”

Mr Hughes said U3A Yarra Ranges was now committed to the concept of retaining the Swinburne site as an educational precinct and base for the group.

KNOX Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following the theft of a rare race car last month.

The rare racing car, a 1970 Rennmax worth $320,000, was allegedly stolen from a factory in Rowville between 11am on 21 December and 10am on 22 December.

The car was located on 8 January and reunited with it’s owner.

Detectives executed search warrants at two residential addresses in Boronia and Belgrave South around 7am on Tuesday.

A number of items were seized as evidence from the Boronia address.

A 33-year-old man was arrested and interviewed in relation to the incident.

He was charged with theft of motor vehicle and trailer, and handling stolen goods.

The Boronia man was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 12 May 2014.

TWO memorials are set to be unveiled in commemoration of more than 3000 soldiers of the 13th Infantry Brigade arriving at Lilydale 100 years ago.

The troops set up camp on Saturday 7 February 1914 on paddocks of what is now Lillydale Lake for a week long ‘camp of instruction’ with a mock battle at Mount Mary near Coldstream taking place on 13 February 1914.

To mark the centenary of these events, the Rotary Club of Lilydale will be unveiling two memorials one at Lillydale Lake on Sunday 9 February and the other on Thursday 13 February in Coldstream.

Mount Evelyn RSL secretary Anthony McAleer said although this event is a project of the Rotary Club, the centenary of these events is significant for the RSL as well.

“Having these two unveils is a great way for all of us to launch a whole series of different commemorative events that will acknowledge the centenary of Anzac Day,” he said.

Mr McAleer said the camp area

was part of David Mitchell’s Cave Hill Estate in 1914.

“During their time here, the 13th Infantry Brigade undertook company and battalion drill training, musketry practice and undertook route marches around the area,” he said.

“It is believed that the famous aviator Harry Hawker also flew over the camp.”

Mr McAleer said the ceremony at Lillydale Lake has a number of guest speakers with the event kicking off with Major-General Sir John Monash’s great-grandson Michael Bennett unveiling a commemorative plaque.

“There will also be the unveiling of a storyboard sign that will detail the history of the camp as well as the Australian Great War Association will be there to form a guard of honour,” he said.

“The association is a group of volunteers who dress in WWI attire and will also provide a display and demonstration.

“A fly-over of a biplane in honour of Harry Hawker as well as a display by Mr Hawker’s family will be on show alongside the launch of

ues in four townships making communication difficult.

“Also, many of our members, being elderly, can no longer drive and so need to use public transport,” he said. “Just reaching these venues is extremely difficult for many.

“This makes it imperative that we have a base in Lilydale, which is the only township in this shire which can be reached from all parts of the shire by public transport.”

Call for cat-free zone A TWO kilometre feline exclusion zone has been suggested by residents trying to protect lyrebirds in the national park in Sherbrooke.

Concerned resident Roger Willsher from The Patch contacted the Mail this week, after reading about a number of attacks on the birds since the beginning of the year.

“I’ve been trying to convince the shire and council that an exclusion zone for new cats is the best way to deal with the problem,” Mr Willsher said.

“We can’t tell the residents that their cats aren’t allowed that are al-

ready living there, but they should be registered, neutered and kept in an enclosed area.

“The idea is that the residents can bring no new cats to the area.”

Mr Willsher said that the idea had been tried and successful in Denham, Western Australia, and that there was no reason the same rules couldn’t apply here.

“They had issues with cats attacking the bilbys,” he said.

“But it is the same idea.”

Mr Willsher said the new rules would mean residents could keep their cats but not be allowed to replace them when they eventually

passed away.

“But these cats would need to be desexed and contained on their properties,” he said.

“Most cat owners are responsible but it’s the few who aren’t that make these rules a necessity.” He said lyrebirds had relatively long breeding cycles and only lay one egg every 15-18 months. “Against these cats, the lyrebird population doesn’t have a chance,” he said.

“I think that it should be stipulated in a Section 32, if a house were to be sold that it was a cat-free area.”

He said while cats were a large problem, people walking their dogs

through the park were also causing problems for the ecosystem of the park.

“They leave a scent behind which frightens the wallabies off,” he said.

“Then the wallabies don’t feed on the grass, which mean the lyrebirds aren’t able to get through the grass to scratch for their own feed.”

Yarra Ranges Council is currently consulting with the community about its cat curfew and off-lead local laws.

Set for career of campaigning AN EYE-opening volunteering experience in Laos and Cambodia helped 19-year-old Vanessa Gillam firm up her career ambition.

The Lilydale teenager is now a step closer to achieving her goal, after being awarded a prestigious scholarship to study at Bond University on the Gold Coast.

Vanessa graduated as school captain from Tintern Schools last year, is one of just 10 students from around Australia to be awarded a full-fee vicechancellor’s scholarship to study at the private university.

She moved to the Gold Coast this month to embark on a double bachelor of journalism and bachelor of laws degree which she hopes will lead her to a career centred on helping the less fortunate.

“I am really interested in human rights law and I always wanted to be a news journalist, so the double degree puts me in good stead for both,” she said.

“Either way, I want to embark on a career that will benefit others.”

Vanessa said the volunteering experience in Cambodia and Laos, which she completed with a school group in December 2012, had been a life changing experience.

“We went for a month and it was honestly one of the best experiences of my life,” she said.

“The trip included two treks, we helped build an exterior toilet block at a school in Laos, taught English and played sport with the kids.

“The happiness of the kids there, even though they did not have much, was so great to see.

“I have a chance to have a great education and I want to use it to help others.”

Vanessa said the trip really made her want to explore the humanitarian side of law even more and journalism would be a opportunity to give a voice to people from all walks of life.

As school captain, Vanessa helped to raise money and awareness for various charities including Oaktree, driven by young people wanting to end world poverty, which she said also piqued her interest in humanitarian law.

She also raised money for the Heart Foundation and Leukaemia Foundation and participated in debate, public speaking and school musical and drama productions.

“I’ve just moved to the Gold Coast and love it.”

AS the school uniform is dusted off and a fresh lunch box packed, police are sending out a strong message to drivers to slow down.

With students heading back to school this week, reduced 40 kilometre/hour and 60km/h zones are back in force.

State Highway Patrol Inspector Simon Humphrey said lower speed limits were in place in school zones to protect children and drivers should be extra cautious when travelling through these areas.

He said children can be unpredictable and drivers need to be aware of this and watch their speed or face hefty penalties.

“They’re excited about seeing their friends again and sharing stories about what they did on the school holidays,” he said.

“Unfortunately, this excitement can lead to distraction when crossing the road or walking near parked cars.

“It’s important for drivers to avoid distraction and drive safely in school zones.”

Insp Humphrey said police were running a number of operations in school zones across the state and would be cracking down on those doing the wrong thing.

“The 40km/h speed signs are not advisory, they are mandatory,” he said.

“If you speed, receiving a fine is the least of your worries.

“So please, slow down and do the right thing - running late is nothing compared to the heartache of hitting a person.”

Insp Humphrey said if police pull a driver over they won’t be accepting any excuses.

Reduced speed limits will be in force in school zones from 8am to 9.30am and again from 2.30pm to 4pm.

Beating lingering stress from trauma

By KATH GANNAWAY A SERIES of workshops to be held in Yarra Glen in March and April aims to help people affected by the 2009 bushfires recognise and manage Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Trauma psychologist and director of the Australian College of Trauma Treatment, Michael Burge, will facilitate the workshops as people in bushfire-affected areas face potential triggers including the five year anniversary of Black Saturday, recent bushfires and prolonged days of high fire danger.

For some, it’s just the progression of time according to Mr Burge who has worked clinically in the area of PTSD for around 20 years.

He said for a large proportion of people who have suffered trauma, their focus initially is on getting back to what life was like before the event.

“Before they can process the terror or trauma they have to get a roof over their head. Beyond that it’s sometimes one, two or three years, sometimes as much as 10 before the terrible, emotional impact starts to hit and then starts to bite,” he explained.

The impact can be more obvious in some people than in others, and recognising the signs and acknowledging vulnerability and the need to rely on others, is critical.

Mr Burge says that while denial can be a coping mechanism, particularly in rural areas built on stoicism, when it comes to recovering from terror or trauma, people have to acknowledge that as individuals and human beings they have to reach out.

The community/family resil-

ience workshops are about recognising the signs and developing coping skills in a safe environment.

He said there were tactics people could use as anniversaries and environmental factors such as heat and bushfires brought unwanted reminders of trauma. Being mindful of the possibility of being affected emotionally during this time of year and being aware of how the emotional distress might manifest itself such as being withdrawn, irritable, more argumentative were a starting point.

“Look for the warning signs and try to do something to create a situation where they are a little bit pampered and made to feel safe.

“Basically, take care of yourself.

Whatever you enjoy doing that is self-caring, do it and be considerate of others around you,” he said.

The workshops may also help dispel the myth that PTSD is a life sentence.

Mr Burge said by learning how to manage PTSD, the symptoms can be reduced to a level where it had very little impact. “A balanced view is needed,” he said.

“Some think you can get over it in a couple of weeks or months, and others think there is no such thing as a cure. The answer is that in many, many cases people do recover and have very few symptoms.”

The Yarra Glen workshops, presented by Steels Creek Association and funded by VBAF are free, however bookings are essential. Dates are 5 and 19 March and 9 and 30 April.

Generosity is the cornerstone

By KATH GANNAWAY WHEN the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal officially closed in April 2009, more than $379 million had been donated. That built to over $400 million, making it the single largest charity in Australian history.

The generosity of Australians and people from around the world was staggering, and for so many of the people affected, it was the cornerstone of their rebuilding - in bricks and mortar, physically, mentally and emotionally.

But five years on, not everyone has been able to rebuild, for whatever reasons.

In Steels Creek, one family that has rebuilt is surrounded by neighbours living in sheds. Others abandoned their dream to rebuild on the land they loved because of the BMO, others just haven’t been able to face the prospect.

The work continues with VBAF funds still working with individuals and

within communities.

Figures and statistics provided by VBAF provide a background to the progress that has been made, and to the ongoing support.

Here are some of what the statistics tell us.

Of the 268 households who had not rebuilt in mid-2012, 95 per cent have now been provided with access to assistance through the VBAF Further Housing Assistance Gift, and/or the State Government’s Rebuilding Advisory Service and Bushfire Buy-back Scheme.

About 95 per cent of the appeal funds - $383.3million with the remaining $18.7 million is committed but distributed and the remaining funds are allocated to programs and projects.

As of 30 December 2013, the fund had made more than $46,000 in payments, the vast majority of them to individuals and families impacted by the fire.

· More than $111million was paid to

people whose homes were destroyed, while $31 million was paid to those whose homes were damaged.

The fund spent more than $225 million on housing support - about 60 per cent of the total Fund.

Over the past four years, VBAF has funded more than 10,000 counselling sessions and continues to fund high-intensive psychological support to those most in need and this will continue until the end of November this year.

Over 1300 bushfire-affected residents have accessed the fund’s psychological support services.

Statistics will never tell the whole story; and money will never fix all the problems, or heal all the wounds.

The challenge over the next five years, and possibly longer, is to ensure that those who remain most vulnerable are not forgotten.

A NARBETHONG firefighter and inventor has taken experience and stories from the Black Saturday bushfires and turned it into a potentially life-saving device to assist in residents’ firefighting abilities.

Rod Sheppard devised a way of protecting fire pumps after hearing stories of pumps giving out at critical moments, due to heat and fire-related causes, and created the Pump Defenda.

The Pump Defenda works by screwing on to an outlet on a generator and using small amounts of pressure and water to have a sprinkler-effect, spraying water on the working-generator.

He said the device was tried and tested, and stopped the generator from catching fire, stopped parts from melting and kept fuel from boiling and vapourising.

“I went through Black Saturday,” Mr Sheppard said.

“As a result of going out and protecting my community on the Sunday, it became evident how many people lost their fight to save their homes and worse, because their fighting pump failed.”

He said that many people ended up leaving late - an extremely dangerous option - because they had originally planned to stay and defend their homes, but their pumps gave out.

Mr Sheppard noted that the device doesn’t use up an outlet, saving space, and that it uses a small enough amount of water and pressure to leave fire-fighting abilities unhindered.

The Pump Defenda won Mr Sheppard the Inventor of the Year Award from the Inventor’s Association of Australia in December.

He said the fifth anniversary of the tragic bushfires was a timely reminder for safety in fire-prone areas, and that he recommended his invention to anyone who would choose to stay and defend their home.

“It’s cheap insurance,” he said.

On days of extreme and code red fire danger, leaving early or the night beforehand is always the safest option.

Town and lives slowly rebuilt

Marysville post office owner Ray Mahoney struggled to fight back the tears just days after Black Saturday as he told then Premier John Brumby it was the kindness of others that had reduced him to tears.

As he walked away from the Healesville emergency refuge centre with an armful of donated blankets and pillows, he spoke of a future for Marysville – a future that is now emerging. 114037 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY It’s not the only one. Marysville is different now, but it has a lot to offer.

“There is nothing here that I wish wasn’t here,” Mr Mahoney said of the reconstruction that has delivered a new school, community centre, police station, parks, playgrounds, walking tracks and other infrastructure. It’s been a team effort to rebuild the town, he said.

Mr Mahoney paid tribute to the Council who he says did their part, the people who came up and supported the town, those who stayed and rebuilt and those who returned to rebuild.

“Sure, some things could have been done differently - you’re never going to please everybody,” he said.

“But if you were to sit everyone down and ask what they think, I don’t think there’s anyone up

By JESSE GRAHAM FIVE years after a firestorm tore its way through the area, Malcolm Calder is very aware of the capabilities of the area when it comes to bushfires.

Reflecting on the day that saw thousands of homes destroyed and 173 people lose their life, Mr Calder said the hot, dry winds that have been blowing through January come with a reminder of their danger.

“I don’t appreciate hot, northerly winds - I never did - but they have a more sinister meaning than they had,” he said.

A Steels Creek resident, Mr Calder saved two houses with his son, James, on their property during the inferno five years ago.

Though he said he will be attending the Black Saturday Memorial event in Yarra Glen, he remarked that the event has now passed from a present-thought into his past.

“Generally, I think that, as time goes by, it passes into your personal history - it becomes something that happened,” he said.

Mr Calder said that he could not speak for the wider community, however, which still contains

here who would be ungrateful.

“When something happens you can ask for help, and if you’re given help, there’s not much more you can say but ‘thank you’.”

While Black Saturday put Marysville on the world map, Ray says it has also given the Marysville community a global perspective.

“I don’t know anyone who went through this up here and came out the other side who isn’t a better person, more understanding of other things that happen in the world,” he said.

“You can relate to these people now, standing there with nothing in a disaster, and think maybe they need some help. That’s something good that has come of this.”

CASTING his mind back to the day he and other residents were allowed back into Marysville, Ray Mahoney recalls his first thoughts ... “What happened?”.

It’s a question people all around Victoria asked five years ago as the horror of Black Saturday hit first with a numbing blow, then a crushing sadness as the loss of so many lives, livelihoods and homes was revealed. There were also stories of courage, survival and generosity that gave hope.

Five years on, Mr Mahoney, whose post office business and home he shared with wife Carole was destroyed, speaks first of gratitude. Then of hope, and the future.

“I could not say in a million years how grateful we are to everyone who has come and supported us,” he said.

The new post office re-opened in December 2010, the first to completely rebuild and move back. It hasn’t been easy - and there’s a way to go yet for the town to re-establish, but like many in Marysville, Mr Mahoney is pinning hopes on the new hotel/conference centre that is under way. He says he is confident it’s the thing that will kick the town back into some sort of normality.

“It will be one of the only things built here that is going to benefit the locals and visitors,” he said.

“Everything else has been either for one or the other.”

Rebuilding is slow and properties are not selling quickly, but he says that has to be seen in the context of jobs, which is where the new hotel could play a role. Perhaps a dozen new families have moved in, mostly of retirement age, but some young families too, he said.

The population is creeping up too, he thinks around the 220 mark, over one third of what it was. That’s a positive.

THE Toolangi Tavern is the perfect place to grab a delicious bite to eat while looking over the picturesque mountains and state forest.

The brainchild of owner, proprietor and licensee Michelle Marshall, the tavern is the perfect spot for casual dining or to host weddings, engagements, birthday parties and all manner of celebrations.

In 2001 Ms Marshall opened the Toolangi General Store and said she decided the venue needed a signature dish - and thus the Toolangi Burger was born.

“Before long on weekends there were queues outside the general store, all waiting for a fresh burger,” she said.

Ms Marshall said she decided that she needed a special place for her customers to eat their burgers so the Toolangi Tavern was born and opened in 2006.

“So the Toolangi Burger is quite literally the burger that resulted in the building of a tavern,” she said.

“On weekends, patrons come from the city and even Geelong to eat at the tavern, so bookings are necessary to ensure a seat, otherwise a wait of half an hour communing with nature in the garden may be necessary.”

U3A ‘homeless’

By REBECCA BILLS U3A Yarra Ranges president Geoff Hughes has announced the group was “homeless” after unforeseen circumstances forced the group out of their current bases.

Mr Hughes said after the closure of Swinburne, their base site was then divided between the pavilion at the Uniting Church in Lilydale and the Janet Campbell Centre in Kilsyth.

“Due to circumstances beyond our control, both these sites are no longer available we are now homeless,” he said.

“We have just been given some breathing space in a disused Maternal Health centre in Kilsyth for 12 months which will allow us to store equipment and records securely.

“But this is temporary, and we need a base which will provide office space, secure storage space and classroom space

to allow us our needed flexibility in programming.”

Mr Hughes said U3A Yarra Ranges was now committed to the concept of retaining the Swinburne site as an educational precinct and base for the group.

“As the community group which has been holding classes at this site from the opening until the closing of the campus, we are extremely anxious to regain our classrooms and to set up a permanent home base on this site,” he said.

“We already have history here and we need our classrooms back.”

U3A Yarra Ranges is an autonomous self-help organisation of mature age citizens of the shire dedicated to providing a full range of low-cost affordable classes.

Mr Hughes said at present their classes were spread over

nine venues in four townships making communication difficult.

“Also, many of our members, being elderly, can no longer drive and so need to use public transport,” he said.

“Just reaching these venues is extremely difficult for many.

“This makes it imperative that we have a base in Lilydale, which is the only township in this shire which can be reached from all parts of the shire by public transport.”

U3A Yarra Ranges genealogy teacher and walking group instructor John Sebire said the group was in talks with council at the moment to secure the Swinburne site, however was in a state of limbo at the moment.

U3A is a learning co-operative of volunteers, who encourage health ageing by enabling members to share educational, creative and leisure activities.

The Yarra Valley Grape Grazing Festival will return to the area after five years from 14-16 February, featuring more than 60 events scattered through wineries, towns and shops in the area.

Throughout the weekend, many of the wineries on the Warburton, Melba and Maroondah highways will be taking part in the festival, with special events and live music to keep visitors entertained, satisfied and full.

We provided Christmas hampers and a toy gift shop and distributed more than 200 hampers and many toys to 126 families with 277 children, and 74 singles and seniors.

In the true spirit of giving, individuals, businesses, community service organisations and other agencies rallied behind our program donating food, toys and financial assistance.

Some of the ways service clubs and businesses raised donations for our program was requesting staff or members to bring along food or toys to their Christmas breakup to donate instead of giving gifts to each other (RACV Club, Healesville Sanctuary, Probus, the Arthritis Club, Healesville Senior Citizens, Girl Guides); the library waived fines for December and instead requested a food donation, schools including, St Brigid’s collected non-perishable food and gold coin donations, once again the shire and the Link staff supported us by providing the venue to hold our Christmas program in and a Christmas giving tree.

Our collection bins at Coles and IGA were abundant requiring emptying every couple of days and individuals dropped off bags of food to our office.

To the many individuals who gave donations large and small, you know who you are, we are so grateful and appreciative of your support as it helps us to stock our hampers with Christmas treats.

Our thanks go to our wonderful volunteers who grace us, day in day out, with their hope for and consideration of others in the community.

And our thanks go to the ongoing and continued support of Rotary, Gerties Op Shop, the Lions Club, our member churches, RACV Club Healesville, Rochford, Sous Vide Australia, Breen Printing and many other organsiations.

I desperately hope I haven’t left anyone out as I really want to let the greater community know of the wonderful work so many groups, businesses and individuals contribute to ensure everyone in our community can feel the joy of Christmas.

Pool’s health benefits AS I’m sure you’re aware Councillor McAllister, the Jack Hort Memorial Pool is in financial dire straits, despite the hard work of its employees and the loyal patronage of many locals.

As a regular swimmer I have witnessed the value the Jack Hort pool brings to the community - both in wellbeing and, indeed, financially (ability to exercise now dramatically reduces the risk of expensive health issues later on).

Everyone from my four-year-old daughter who takes classes to the group of septuagenarians who meet to exercise will suffer if the pool were to close.

And very few patrons will be able to make the trip to an alternative venue (or pay the price).

I urge the council to assist in keeping Healesville’s highly valued local pool open.

Alternative animal breeds focus of show

TWO memorials are set to be unveiled in commemoration of more than 3000 soldiers of the 13th Infantry Brigade arriving at Lilydale 100 years ago.

The troops set up camp on Saturday 7 February 1914 on paddocks of what is now Lillydale Lake for a week long ‘camp of instruction’ with a mock battle at Mount Mary near Coldstream taking place on 13 February 1914.

To mark the centenary of these events, the Rotary Club of Lilydale will be unveiling two memorials - one at Lillydale Lake on Sunday 9 February and the other on Thursday 13 February in Coldstream.

Mount Evelyn RSL secretary Anthony McAleer said although this event is a project of the Rotary Club, the centenary of these events is significant for the RSL as well.

“Having these two unveils is a great way for all of us to launch a whole series of different commemorative events that will acknowledge the centenary of Anzac Day,” he said.

Mr McAleer said the camp area was part of David Mitchell’s Cave Hill Estate in 1914.

“During their time here, the 13th Infantry Brigade undertook company and battalion drill training, musketry practice and undertook route marches around

Cruising into town

By JESSE GRAHAM A SWELTERING weekend couldn’t deter the spirits of more than 400 people as the annual Black Saturday Remembrance Cruise took off for a third year running.

The cruise was held on Saturday 1 February, with drivers taking off from Lilydale for a drive through Yarra Glen to Healesville Railway Station, where a ceremony was held.

About 400 cars took part in the cruise and event organiser Stacey Kinsmore estimates that the event raised about $6000 for Healesville CFA, though the final figure was not available yet.

Casey MP Tony Smith and Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister spoke at the event at the station, before a ceremony was held at the community labyrinth.

Mr Smith said the event, and the fifth anniversary of the Black Saturday bushfires, was a time to reflect on the preciousness of life.

“Five years on, it’s a time to reflect - to reflect on the fact that life is both precious, precarious and passing,” he said.

“We know that, five years on, we will be here... we know that, as the years pass, the memory of those that lost their lives will never dim, nor will the community spirit that was on display then and that we know

exists so much today.”

Ms Kinsmore noted that attendance was down slightly, when compared to previous years, but noted that the weekend’s extreme heat meant that many drivers and event attendees stayed home.

“We were quite surprised and overwhelmed with the amount of cars that turned up,” she said.

She said that a couple of the event attendees had begun the cruise by doing burnouts and that, as a result, they were kicked out of the SS Owners Club they were part of and police were notified.

Ms Kinsmore said that she and the other organisers - Tony Kinsmore and Wendy Bennett - would have a zero tolerance for hooning behaviour.

“You have got to have respect for the event - we don’t need that trouble and we won’t put up with it,” she said.

Ms Kinsmore said that no date has been set for next year’s cruise event, but that a Black Saturday Remembrance Cruise Facebook Group is regularly updated with information.

Upsets leave top slots open YVCA RESULTS TOUGH conditions greeted cricketers in the valley on Saturday where the teams taking the crease took full advantage of the wilting bowling attacks. In the competition’s premier grade, DJ Strachan Shield, a couple of upset results have once again intensified the race for top four positions with three rounds remaining.

Hoddles Creek proved that its potential is greater than what its lowly position on the competition ladder shows as it easily accounted for association leaders Healesville.

Healesville set its hosts a challenging chase of 175 and with a consistent attack one would have thought the Wombats would struggle to chase the total. Once again Hoddles Creek showed its fighting spirit and, fortunately, it was their experienced batsmen who got things going quickly putting Healesville on the back foot.

Mick Batten was the mainstay of the innings compiling a brilliant knock of 89.

Healesville now needs to regroup quickly if it is to maintain its grip on a home final as it hosts a resurgent Yarra Junction.

Hoddles Creek will view its next match up against a struggling Warburton-Millgrove as an ideal opportunity to post two victories in succession. Yarra Junction produced the second upset of the round fighting doggedly to hold off a desperate Mount Evelyn side to continue its spirited challenge to the top four.

Chasing a mediocre 134 set by the home side, Yarra Junction were teetering on the edge starting the day on an unconvincing 3/28.

Fun day draws out old mates MORE than 100 players descended on the Warburton Golf Club for a very successful Australia Day weekend fun-comp - many previous members returning to renew old acquaintances.

This aspect of the day was the most pleasing, as members and ex-members spotted one another and found time to reminisce.

Although the results were secondary to the social impact of this type of day, there was a clear winning team.

Playing the popular Ambrose team event, there was always going to be a low score, but no one expected a team to finish 16 under the card!

That’s right, a clever team of four shot a 53 ‘off-the-stick’.

There were a couple of other great scores but the greenkeeper’s team of Paul Mason, Benny Chester, Wes Martin and Roger Jones were the lucky ones, although those who witnessed their stroke-making said it was just “hot golf” from the first to the last hole!

Early start’s a winner THERE were plenty of ways to keep cool at Healesville Greyhounds on Sunday as dogs, catchers, punters and kids took advantage of an early start to beat the heat and enjoy the racing and the GRV 2014 Summer of Racing family activities.

The 10-race meeting included heats for next Sunday’s $72,500 Healesville Cup final.

Families defied the heat to take advantage of the Sensational Summer for Kids program including free activities and food and the chance to win a family holiday to the Gold Coast.

While the dogs cooled off after each race with a good hose down, the kids mixed it up with fun and games including the very popular wet sponge dodge-ball and water relay races.

The Sensational Summer fun will continue on Cup Day, Sunday 9

February, with Kelly Sports running a massive program of active and passive activities for the kids, prizes and give-aways.

AFL Melbourne player Matt Jones will be on track running the footy handball competition and obliging with pre-season photos with fans.

For the punters the Cup will be the highlight of the day with Sunday’s heats resulting in a top-level field of eight competing for the big prize money.

HGC manager Lee Fahry said the club was keen to see Yarra Valley families enjoying the excellent facilities and said Cup Day, with lots on offer on and off the track, was the perfect time to enjoy the great racing at Healesville’s unique straight race track.
